00:00What's up, everyone?
00:28This is Noah Dalzell, and I'm here with a special WNBA-focused edition of You Got Boston,
00:34live from Minneapolis, where I'm here covering the WNBA Finals.
00:39I've been doing these You Got Boston episodes for the last few months, centered around the
00:43Celtics, who I also cover, but a lot of you have had questions about the WNBA, and I just
00:47figured I'm here, I'm in Minneapolis, I've been following these games around kind of
00:52throughout the playoffs.
00:53So I figured I'd do an episode just kind of discussing the league and what we're seeing
00:57right now with the growth of the league, and then also this phenomenal, phenomenal
01:01series between the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty.
01:05And so feel free, as always, to put questions in the chat, I know we might get a slightly
01:10different group than we sometimes have, just because this is a WNBA-focused episode.
01:16And so if you're new to the WNBA, feel free to hang around and just learn a little bit
01:19more about what kind of what we're seeing, or maybe you've just been watching everything
01:23that we have seen unfold on TV over the last week.
01:28It's hard to put into words how great of a series this has been between the Liberty and
01:31the Lynx.
01:32So I'm in my hotel room right now, I just got back from Target Center, where we had
01:35a media availability with players and coaches on both sides.
01:39We talked to Cheryl Reeves, Sandy Brindello, I talked to like, probably over a dozen players
01:44about their perspectives and what happened last night.
01:47And I will begin by just making sure everybody knows what happened last night, I think you'd
01:51have to be not turning on the TV or radio to know what kind of what what you missed.
01:56But this was a game that went down to the wire between the Liberty and the Lynx.
02:01And with a minute to go, the Liberty were up by one, Sabrina Inescu had a really quiet,
02:07really quiet game, she had seven points at that at that point, hits a three, biggest
02:11shot of the night, they extend the lead to four.
02:15Bridget Carlton and Nafisa Collier both respond.
02:17And so it's now again, a tie game, last possession, Liberty has the ball, Sabrina takes the takes
02:24the ball, she's going to run the clock down, just Kayla McBride, guarding her, who's a
02:28good defender, crosses her up, creates a little bit of separation and hits what I think is
02:33one of the greatest shots that I've ever witnessed, if not the greatest.
02:38And I've seen a lot of great shots.
02:39I mean, I'm not that old, but I've been watching basketball my whole life.
02:41And I think just on the NBA side has been so much greatness, the WNBA side, but when
02:46do you see a game winning three point shot, not just from really far out, but for the
02:52second three pointer in the final minute, like it wasn't just that shot, right, it was
02:56the one previously as well.
02:58And then also just the implications, you know, you got to this a game three, whoever wins
03:02this game is going to take a two one lead in a five game series.
03:06And then just the difficulty, the range, like there's just so many components that made
03:11that shot of what it was.
03:12And then obviously, the Lynx weren't able to get a shot off, New York pulls away with
03:17a win.
03:18And they have a two one lead now in a series that they were down a one after just disastrous
03:24loss at Barclay Center.
03:25And they've kind of rectified that and come back with a massive two game win streak here
03:29right in time.
03:30So there's a lot to unpack when it comes to this game between Brianna Stewart's performance,
03:35Sabrina's on the Liberty side, on the Lynx side, there's just been a kind of a cast of
03:39characters that have stood out in different moments.
03:41And obviously, Mephisa Collier is the head of the snake.
03:44Courtney Williams has been huge at times.
03:47But the Liberty come out on top yesterday.
03:49And it's just, I don't know, I was a game one, and I was a game three, and game one
03:54in Barclay Center, like it was just unlike anything I've ever experienced in how a crowd
03:59just lost all of its energy and all of its momentum, like, that place was confident that
04:04New York was going to go up one zero, and then Courtney Williams hits a three point
04:08shot gets fouled on it takes the one point lead.
04:11And then obviously, you know, Brianna Stewart misses the free throw, the Lynx win in overtime.
04:18And that place was just absolutely stunned, like just, you know, they couldn't even really
04:22find their words to, you know, kids are crying, it was just it was a wild thing to be a part
04:27of.
04:28Last night, I kind of relived that on the opposite end.
04:30So at this time, it was Minnesota Lynx fans, and I talked to a bunch of fans pregame, these
04:34are diehard fans.
04:35I don't know if people realize the basketball culture here with the Minnesota Lynx, one
04:39of the most kind of decorated franchises in WNBA history, these fans did not know what
04:45they just witnessed.
04:46And so saw in a one week span two killer shots with Courtney Williams and Sabrina Nesquiz,
04:52you know, in it just kind of take out all the oxygen out of their respective arenas.
04:58And this is what makes basketball fun.
04:59I think I think that the fact that, you know, we get to be in this space where the game
05:07you come down to the last shot, and that's happened multiple times in the series and
05:11game four is tomorrow on Friday, I expect another great game because we've literally
05:16only gotten great games in the series and honestly, this entire playoffs has just been
05:19phenomenal.
05:20And I was at first following the Connecticut Sun, which is not a beat writer for the Sun,
05:24but I live in Boston, so they're the easiest team to get to.
05:27So I was kind of following them along and their seat, you know, series against Caitlin
05:31Clark and the Fever, which had just so much buzz around it because of Caitlin Clark's
05:35presence.
05:36And then the Connecticut Lynx series, I was here for game five or Minnesota kind of punched
05:41their ticket to the finals.
05:42And then obviously the finals series has just been the best, probably the best series I've
05:46seen in my lifetime.
05:47Maybe 2016 NBA Finals, we'll, we'll see how this one wraps up, but just great basketball.
05:53And so I can share a little bit about what I learned today, just being at the media availability
05:57with Brianna Seward and Sabrina and just all the energy from the Liberty players.
06:03I will say like the Lynx's mood was pretty good.
06:06Players came in and the way that it kind of works is that players kind of station around
06:11the arena.
06:12And so there's a lot of like, you know, there's this room when every player sits, grabs a
06:16seat and just sits there and then we get to ask them questions and we go around and ask
06:20the questions.
06:21And so they were in a pretty good, pretty good spirits.
06:23They were going to watch film later.
06:25They didn't seem like totally deflated and I think they're going to come back and have
06:28a great game tomorrow and we'll see exactly what happens.
06:31But yeah, I think absolutely.
06:34This was one of those outcomes that's like, you have to mentally just come back and respond
06:39and totally kind of figure this out and figure out how do you leave that behind you.
06:43But also New York has to figure out how do you leave it behind you?
06:45Because I think part of what went wrong in game one was the fact that in game one, there
06:51was that, you know, in game one, New York was the one that, you know, was devastated.
06:57And I think Minnesota honestly got so excited and so hyped about the win that there was
07:03this feeling of like, how do you even, how do you even move forward and not blow it?
07:07And it actually reminded me a little bit of last year in the conference finals in 2023
07:12when the Celtics won game six and Derrick White hit the game winning, the game winning
07:16tip in and they were almost in disbelief that it happened.
07:19Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum, they're all kind of standing there like, I can't believe we
07:24got this win.
07:25You know, it was felt like they were the team of destiny and then they, you know, come out
07:29of game seven and get blown out at home to the heat.
07:32Not to remind people about that game, but, you know, it had a little element of that
07:35where Minnesota honestly couldn't believe that they got game one done.
07:38And the next thing you know, next thing you know, they come out and lose two straight.
07:42I don't think that their mentality was in the wrong place, but I think it's hard sometimes
07:45to respond to these miraculous wins as well.
07:49And so certainly these teams are going to have to both kind of figure out mentally how
07:53to stay in check and kind of stay locked in and solid.
07:57And so I'm going to go through these questions, but first a message from our friends over
08:02at PrizePix.

09:23$5 lineup.
09:25PrizePix, run your game.
09:28So I want to get through some of these questions here.
09:31I know some of you have been asking for WNBA related questions, and so I figured I didn't
09:35know how much interest exactly there was, but that I'd designate some time to answer
09:38them since I'm here on the ground.
09:40So I'll start with you, Tom.
09:43Thank you, first of all, for the well wishes.
09:45Yeah, I took a direct flight here.
09:47No issues at all.
09:47Honestly, getting to Minneapolis from Boston is so easy.
09:49It's almost easier than getting to New York because you land in Minneapolis.
09:53It's like a 15 minute Uber to your hotel, and my hotel is literally like attached to
09:58the arena because everything's so cheap here.
09:59So yeah, a question about the atmosphere at Target Center.
10:05The atmosphere was ridiculous.
10:07It was so good.
10:08I think Barclays Center was probably a little bit louder.
10:12I always know I wear my headphones usually, like noise canceling headphones when I'm in
10:17an arena that's just like so loud that I'm worried about my hearing, and so I try to
10:22be mindful of that.
10:24Last night I didn't put my headphones in, so it wasn't like to that point where I'm
10:27like, okay, I actually am worried about my hearing.
10:30Barclays Center I was.
10:32But that being said, the thing that people don't know about the Minnesota Lynx, I interviewed
10:36a bunch of fans pre-game, and that story I'm saving for maybe a big win game four.
10:40But these are fans that have been following this team for a very long time.
10:44Since its inception, they watched four championships under Cheryl Reeve, and they understand the
10:49fact that this is not like the WNBA is new to a lot of people, and it's exploding in
10:53the last couple of years, but to OG Lynx fans, they've been here.
10:58Last night they did break an attendance record, but it's not like these are new fans for
11:01the most part.
11:02These are actually a pretty established fan base, and so atmosphere was incredible.
11:06Everybody that I spoke to pre-game was just so excited to be at a WNBA finals game and
11:11to be watching this Minnesota Lynx team.
11:13And if you've been watching this team all year, you know this is such a fun team to
11:17root for.
11:18They haven't been a team that I've been on their beat or anything, but just every time
11:21I watch them, I'm like, they were my pick to win the championship.
11:24And maybe that's wrong now.
11:26Now that they're down to one, they're probably not going to win.
11:28I mean, you never know, but they were my pick because they just play just phenomenal team
11:33basketball.
11:33So the arena environment was awesome.
11:37So was Barclays Center.
11:38Those were definitely the two best arenas for WNBA Ace that I've experienced this year.
11:43Ace is really in that category as well.
11:46Connecticut's tough.
11:46It's, you know, they have a nice fan base, but it's a smaller arena.
11:49It's a little bit quieter.
11:51And they're in a casino, which is a little weird.
11:53They're not like in a major city.
11:54So those are the arenas that I've spent the most time in, but Barclays for the finals
11:58and Minnesota for game five of last series and the finals again, just been unreal.
12:03And I think on TV, I'm sure that it captured a lot of it.
12:07I don't know that TV can capture like the devastation of a crowd and a fan base.
12:13That's like, yeah, like to, it was just, they were at a loss of words.
12:19I guess I don't even know how to really describe it, honestly.
12:24Question here, but yeah, how amazing is it?
12:25How well is that?
12:26We've had the most amazing endings to a finals game in just one series.
12:29Yeah.
12:29I think I'm so glad that this is the way that it's happening because I feel like women's
12:33basketball had so much momentum heading into the series.
12:35And then obviously like, you know, you never know what the finals is going to be like,
12:40like the NBA finals last year.
12:42I covered the Celtics.
12:43I was, you know, excited about the outcome, but it wasn't a down to the wire finish every
12:47game.
12:47And so if you're trying to convert someone to be an NBA fan, like that series might not
12:51be your best sell for like, okay, you should lock into the series because, you know, you're
12:57going to watch these games go into overtime.
12:59Like that wasn't really the MO of that round.
13:02This series, I feel like it's so important because it's capitalizing on the momentum
13:06of everything that happened this past year with the rookie class headlined by Heathen
13:09Clark, by Angela Reese, by, you know, all the excitement around the Liberty and the
13:13Aces.
13:14But really, I think the rookie class and just like the transfer of all these college fans
13:17has just been so, so monumental.
13:19And so, yeah, the fact that now coincidentally, like those characters that, you know, were
13:25so huge in the national media this year, like they weren't actually in the finals.
13:29But nevertheless, like this series, I think impressed everybody.
13:32And so I talked to Brianna Stewart about that today.
13:35She was talking about like, she's really glad that all these eyes and all the attention
13:39is on them.
13:39And this is, these are the kinds of games that are turning out because you never know
13:42what you're going to get.
13:43I mean, you could just be a bunch of blowouts in both directions.
13:45I mean, how many times have we seen basketball games resulted in a 20 point blowout?
13:49And the next game could be the reverse.
13:51Like the, I think of like the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets series from last year.
13:56Like that was an interesting series that had kind of the opposite effect where games
14:02were really good.
14:02And I had a lot of fun watching it, but there were a lot of blowouts.
14:04And I think people want to see these crazy finishes and this incredible shot making.
14:09And so, yeah, it's pretty wild.
14:11I think it's perfectly timed.
14:13There's a new professional basketball league for women's that's coming together right
14:18now.
14:18It's going to be launching in January in Miami.
14:20It's a three-on-three league, full court, three-on-three league.
14:24And Breonna Stewart and Nafisa Collier, who are both teammates from UConn, are co-launching
14:30that.
14:31And the fact that they're the two stars that are now heading off in this final series and
14:36kind of leading their respective teams throughout this year and this postseason, it's just the
14:40perfect storybook finish for them.
14:42And just yesterday, it was announced that TNT is going to be broadcasting some of those
14:45games.
14:45And so, yeah, that was, I asked a bunch of players about that.
14:50I have a story coming out about Unrivaled for tomorrow.
14:52But this is going to be the first time that there's a women's sports league that's player
14:56owned.
14:57There's 30 players that are participating, 26 of whom have already been announced.
15:03And players have equity and the highest average salary of any women's professional sports
15:08league.
15:09And, yeah, Breonna Stewart and Nafisa Collier are right in the middle of the action in the
15:14WNBA finals with millions of people watching, already the first two games set records for
15:18finals viewership.
15:19And so this is just such an exciting moment for women's basketball.
15:23I've covered the NBA all year.
15:24I'm covering the WNBA now, and it's just been so fun to be able to watch, you know, watch
15:30these games, watch these finishes.
15:32And, yeah, I'm just grateful that the series kind of ended up being what it was.
15:41Question here from Tom, do you think the Lynx bounced back to win game four the same way
15:45the Liberty bounced back and took game two?
15:47Um, I'm 50-50.
15:49I think there is definitely the possibility that the Liberty kind of closed this one out.
15:55They really mean all business, like just talking to the players.
15:58I've been so impressed with their composure today.
16:00Every time, like I asked Sabrina, like, when did it sink in?
16:03And this was an all-time great shot.
16:04And then she was kind of like, it wasn't an all-time great shot if we don't win.
16:07And I think that that's their mindset.
16:10And not that the Lynx jumped the gun on it because they didn't, and they easily could
16:13be up 2-1 right now because I thought they played really good last night.
16:16Um, but certainly I think that there is a level, there's an advantage that the Liberty
16:23have just that they've been there before.
16:25They have more experience.
16:26Uh, Brianna's won a championships, you know, there's the Courtney Brandes who's done it.
16:31So, and then, then obviously like the poor here was together in the finals last year.
16:35So if I had to guess right now, I think the Liberty close it out in game four.
16:41Um, if Minnesota ties it up, I still think the Liberty get this done in five.
16:46At this point, I think the Liberty have this series, but the exciting thing is, you know,
16:50it's basketball.
16:51So it's all just predictions and, and, you know, nobody really knows.
16:54Um, and certainly I think Minnesota talked about it today, you know, at media day, but
16:58there's so much for Minnesota to be happy about.
17:01There's so much for Minnesota to feel not, not from the outcome standpoint, but from
17:05a process standpoint, they liked the defense.
17:07They liked a lot of the looks that they were getting.
17:09Um, and I think not to dumb it down, but I think the general sentiment was that like,
17:13they just needed to see more shots go in and they weren't able to get that.
17:18Um, but yeah, I think it makes sometimes the loss a little bit more challenging, but certainly
17:22like the links have what it takes to beat this team.
17:25I just think right now, all the cards are kind of, I'm starting to get this feeling
17:30that New York is going to get this done in game four.
17:32Um, and so we'll see, um, certainly like I would love to see a live game series.
17:39Um, so, you know, I'll be in New York if there is a game five.
17:43Um, if not, it'll be all wrapped up tomorrow.
17:45And I also think it's fun to see teams win on their home crowd and Barkley center has
17:48just been such a party this year that, um, it would be cool for them to, to do it at
17:52home in front of the fans that have, you know, been so excited to support them all season.
17:57Uh, that was kind of similar with covering the Celtics this year.
18:00Like we saw a bunch of players, you know, go to, you know, we saw them hoping to win
18:06game four, and then they obviously lost game four in Dallas and then able to win game five
18:10in Boston.
18:10And I think in the longterm and the new scheme of things, like, it's great that they got
18:13to have that celebration in Boston.
18:15Um, so I could see that happening to New York too, but I think New York gets us done either
18:19in four or five at this point, they just have so much confidence and poise and focus and
18:23just so many weapons to such a deep team, um, that Sabrina was able to have seven points
18:28with a minute to go and they were still right in it.
18:30And that just goes to show you how much they have going on.
18:33Um, and so right now I have stories on SB Nation on Sabrina and Esco and her shot and
18:38kind of the legend of her, how it's grown.
18:41Um, I also have stories out about Courtney Williams, um, and her relationship with her
18:45father, because she's been, I think someone that has kind of burst into the national landscape
18:49and someone who's just been so fun to watch.
18:51Um, one of the most electric players, the WNBA, in my opinion, and somebody that, um,
18:55I think as the league continues to grow more and more people will be excited about.
18:59Um, and so if you wanted to check out WNBA coverage, it's all on sbnation.com slash WNBA.
19:05Um, I also have Celtics coverage on SB Nation as well as on Celtics blog.
19:09Um, I will be going over some more questions.
19:11So feel free to continue throwing them in the chat box.
19:14Uh, first a quick message from our friends over at game time, and then I'll get through
19:18the rest of these questions and then I'll have more coverage tomorrow.
19:20There's few things I prefer doing than attending an NBA game or sporting event live.
19:25And you can purchase tickets to Celtics games or any other sporting event concert or show
19:28with game time.

20:12What time is it game time?
20:17So I'm going to go through here.
20:18I see Tom asked what press conference from today was your favorite to cover.
20:23Um, so the way that actually today was, was that it wasn't press conferences.
20:26It was just players scattered throughout, and then you could just go to any player and
20:29ask them questions.
20:31Um, so the story that I was hunting was about Unrivaled and the fact that there are five
20:35players in this final series that are going to be soon participating in the first ever
20:39season of this three-on-three basketball league, which I honestly can't even imagine what a
20:44full court three-on-three league is going to look like, but that's what this is.
20:47Um, and so, yeah, it was fun to just go around and talk to players.
20:51Courtney Williams is like just probably the best interview as far as just personality
20:54and just swag.
20:55And she's just so fun to talk to.
20:56She's funny.
20:57Um, but then talking to Sabrina today was really cool because it was one of those moments
21:02where you're realizing like, you're just immersed in basketball history, like lifetime.
21:07Like I'm interviewing a player who last I'd hate one of the greatest shots in the history
21:11of the sport.
21:12Um, I think it's hard to argue against that.
21:14And obviously if they win the championship, that'll cement the legacy of that shot.
21:18Um, but so probably I would say Sabrina was the most fun interview to do today.
21:23And, uh, the thing that was funny with her though, is that she didn't want us to get
21:26carried away.
21:27Like she really was so measured in her reaction to the shot.
21:31Um, and she mentioned, you know, Steph is, Steph and a bunch of NBA players reached out
21:35to her.
21:35She had hundreds of people reaching out to her.
21:37She looked down into the crowd, people were crying.
21:40Um, you know, she had a lot of family and friends there.
21:42She mentioned this after game one is that, you know, when she, she has family and friends
21:45that are traveling and kind of following along at this final series.
21:49Um, and so, yeah, you know, she was just really cool to talk to.
21:53Breonna Stewart's also always a great interview.
21:55It's always more fun to talk to the winners because they're in good spirits.
21:59Um, but I think Cheryl Reeve, the head coach of the Minnesota Lynx, also a great interview
22:03just because she's always willing to kind of talk candidly about, uh, the problems of
22:07the league, the problems of, you know, that her team had.
22:10She even mentioned, you know, there were times where we went up and Courtney Williams took
22:13bad shots because like a layup when you have Breonna Stewart protecting the rim is not
22:17necessarily a great shot to take.
22:19So, yeah, it was just, it's always interesting to hear from coaches that are really candid.
22:24And I do find on the WNBA side, the players and the coaches are typically more candid,
22:29um, and like less media, like buttoned up from like a media standpoint.
22:34Um, and that'll change.
22:35I think that as the league continues to grow, there's going to be a bigger emphasis on like
22:39PR training and things like that.
22:41And, um, you see certain players, like Kaitlyn Clark's a perfect example of somebody who's
22:45super like buttoned up and really professional.
22:47She'll never say the wrong thing.
22:49She's so well spoken.
22:50Um, but a lot of players are kind of willing to speak more off the cuff more casually.
22:54Um, and from a media standpoint, like it's, it's all more fun when they're kind of talking
22:59like a normal people and not like, you know, like the media language that they use, but
23:02I get why it's necessary.
23:03I get why they do it.
23:04Um, but yeah, I think that, you know, just the ability to bounce around and talk to all
23:12these players and kind of help see them process like what they experienced last night on both
23:17sides, um, was a lot of fun.
23:19And so I'll, I'll probably wrap it up here.
23:23Uh, super grateful to kind of have the opportunity to be here in Minneapolis to cover the series.
23:28Um, again, plugging back, you can follow along on SBNation.com slash WNBA for all my WNBA
23:33coverage.
23:34Um, and I won't be doing a whole lot of these episodes.
23:38You know, I know this podcast is, is centered around the Celtics and that's the intention
23:41and the focus.
23:42Um, but I figured it was a good opportunity here in the thick of the finals to just give
23:46a little update from on the ground and see if you guys have any questions.
23:49Um, and I'll be back to Celtics coverage, uh, starting this weekend.
23:52I'll be back in Boston on Saturday.
23:54Um, we'll be at practice.
23:55And so I'll have more on the ground from you guys.
23:57I'm actually landing like literally 10 AM on Saturday, and I'm going to go right from
24:00the airport to Celtics practice.
24:02Um, so I'll have updates for you guys.
24:03And then obviously going into next week for ring night, uh, super excited about that.
24:07Super excited to get the opportunity to cover that.
24:10Follow my dad and my brother tickets.
24:11And they'll be both be in attendance.
24:13Um, and just a full circle moment from starting to cover the team last year to actually covering
24:17the championship run.
24:18Um, and so, yeah, feel free to, if you have other WNBA questions and you weren't able
24:22to join live time, feel free to put them in the comments and I'll respond to the comments.
24:26Um, I can also do another one of these if they would do it or regardless, just there's
24:30interest.
24:30I'm happy to do it even if it's just for a few people.
24:32Um, I appreciate those of you that have been consistently tuning in.
24:34Um, if you want to subscribe to You Got Boston, you can do so on Apple, Spotify, leave a
24:39review, leave a rating, uh, share with a friend, comment on the YouTube.
24:42It's good for the algorithm.
24:44Um, but I appreciate you all for continuing to check, to tune in, to check in.
24:47Um, and hopefully this was a helpful WNBA update for you all.
24:50Um, have a great rest of your day.
