Evaluating if Detroit Lions should draft quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Transcript
00:00 With the NFL draft right around the corner, let's take a look at a quarterback that the Detroit Lions could potentially have interest in selecting.
00:07 That quarterback is J.J. McCarthy from the University of Michigan.
00:11 Here today to analyze whether or not J.J. will get drafted by the Lions is SIL Lions senior writer, Vito Czerko.
00:18 Vito, give me your take. Did the Lions grab J.J. McCarthy as their potential quarterback of the future? Give me your analysis.
00:24 I know you would love it. You're a Michigan man, I know that, right? Thick and thin, you've done the Maize and Blue, whatever you can, Root the Ma, whatever you can.
00:33 Hey, McCarthy had a great career at U of M, didn't he? You know even better than me, Kim, as a lifelong, hardcore fan.
00:39 I'm a fan too, but I'm not the hugest fan of J.J. McCarthy, who did go once again, credit to him, went 27-1 during his time at the University of Michigan.
00:47 Won a national championship, did a lot when it came to team success at U of M.
00:52 But basically, you look at his stats and you know that, hey, Michigan was a run heavy, run first offense, and it took away from what McCarthy really has on film there at Michigan.
01:02 He never got a great chance to throw the ball consistently. Always had zip on his football throws, right? On his fastball per se.
01:10 A lot of velocity, pretty good precision passing, you know, but overall wise, once again because Michigan was so run heavy,
01:18 you didn't see a lot of all that materialized from McCarthy with the Wolverines.
01:23 You didn't see him shine all the time because basically he played the role of a game manager.
01:27 Now at the next level, they're going to look at him as a dual threat, right? A very mobile QB that can get it done with his legs.
01:33 Once again, you know, make the throw and whip with zip on his passes consistently too. Kind of make those precision passes.
01:40 But also, to me, he didn't prove enough while at U of M to say you're going to trade up for him now.
01:46 As the Lions would have to, trading up from number 29 overall in the first round to land this guy potentially towards the top of the first round of this April's draft.
01:53 And it just wouldn't be worth it for the Lions because they would have to, you know, trade how many different picks probably just to make that deal.
02:00 To move up to land McCarthy towards the top of the first round camp.
02:03 And it's not worth it with the needs of the Lions currently have all the needs on the defensive side of the ball to get the Lions to become even more of a winner in 2024 and beyond.
02:12 To take them to that next level, right? To become Super Bowl winners.
02:16 They don't need a quarterback for that to happen. They don't need J.J. McCarthy.
02:19 They need defensive help hugely. And that's where, to me, they're going to land a quarterback.
02:25 They're going to land an edge rusher. Really focus on, once again, improving the defensive side of the football.
02:31 Which puts a QB towards the very bottom of their priority list entering the draft.
02:35 And to me, a guy like J.J. McCarthy as well, towards the very bottom of their priority list.
02:40 And you maybe can dream and will can because you love the Michigan Wolverines.
02:45 But it is, it is that. It's a pipe dream. It is not going to happen.
02:50 Vito, as much as I'd like to see J.J. McCarthy in the Honolulu Blue, I agree. I don't think it's going to happen. Thanks for all the insight.
