00:00 The President insisted that the country should be in a state of emergency if the sovereignty and rights of the Philippines are being taken away.
00:06 In line with the country's independent foreign policy,
00:09 the country's position is being put in the hands of China
00:12 in a forum where the President visited Australia.
00:15 Ian Cruz was there live.
00:18 Ian.
00:19 Emil, it's 10.40 p.m. here in Melbourne, Australia.
00:26 Yesterday, the President did a lot of things,
00:30 like showing his support to the Filipino community,
00:32 attending a bilateral meeting and forums.
00:35 At a forum held by a think tank here in Australia,
00:38 the President said that the Philippines does not follow the likes of the United States.
00:43 He is doing his mandate as the President of the Philippines.
00:51 In his speech at the forum organized by the think tank Lowy Institute in Australia,
00:57 President Marcos laid out the position of the Philippines
01:00 when it comes to its relationship with China.
01:03 Our independent foreign policy compels us to cooperate with them on matters where our interests align,
01:10 to respectfully disagree on areas where our views differ,
01:16 and to push back when our sworn principles such as our sovereignty,
01:21 our sovereign rights, and our jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea are questioned or ignored.
01:28 Marcos was also asked here why he changed his position on facing China
01:34 compared to the previous administration.
01:36 We must defend the territory of the Republic.
01:40 And that is a primordial duty of a leader.
01:45 The territorial integrity of the Philippines cannot be threatened.
01:50 And if threats are made, then we must defend against those threats.
01:57 And for me, it is almost, as I said, it wasn't a matter of policy choice.
02:08 It is the duty that I took on.
02:12 But Marcos insisted that the Philippines does not follow the likes of America.
02:17 Let me make it very, very clear.
02:19 The Philippines acts for its own interests.
02:23 And the decisions that we make when it comes to foreign policy
02:28 are decisions that we make because we believe and are convinced
02:32 and know that it is in the national interest.
02:36 It is not a policy that has been foisted upon us by any country.
02:43 The President also attended the Philippine Business Forum
02:46 where the President encouraged businessmen from Australia to invest in the country.
02:52 There was also a presentation of 14 business agreements between the Philippines and Australia.
02:57 Secretary Alfredo Pascual said that the investment of Australian business in the Philippines is worth 1.53 billion US dollars.
03:07 Earlier this morning, the President and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet had a bilateral meeting.
03:13 As part of the agreement, the strengthening of agriculture, particularly rice, was also discussed.
03:21 Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, along with Australian Foreign Affairs Secretary Penny Wong,
03:29 were at the Maritime Cooperation Forum on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit.
03:33 She urged the following of the Ruloc Law on the resolution of the Sigalot in the South China Sea.
03:38 At a presentation, Manalo defended the government's actions against the public
03:44 regarding what is happening in the West Philippine Sea.
03:46 If you would stop harassing us and perhaps performing other actions, there wouldn't be any news to report.
03:57 Emil Bandang, at 8 p.m. here and 5 p.m. in the Philippines,
04:02 where President Bongbong Marcos will meet the Filipino community here in Australia.
04:08 The President encouraged them in their contribution here in Australia and in the Philippines.
04:13 Tomorrow, the President is expected to have a bilateral meeting.
04:16 He will also bring the leaders of ASEAN to the arrival welcome here at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre here in our Likuranian.
04:25 From Melbourne, Australia, for GMA Integrated News, Ian Cruz, for 24 Hours.
