The Truth About Tyron: Dallas Cowboys Lose All-Pro Smith to New York Jets
Transcript
00:00 The Dallas Cowboys in the last few days said the door is open for Tyron Smith to return
00:07 to America's team.
00:08 Yeah, the Cowboys had the door open, but the New York Jets had the wallet open.
00:12 And in the end, that kind of matters too.
00:14 I'm Mike Fisher reporting for Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:17 We really need to wait till all the final numbers are in because this thing got billed,
00:21 as they often do, as a monster deal.
00:23 It's a one-year contract.
00:25 But $20 million was the number that the agent, the teams, wanted to have out there.
00:32 That's not the real number.
00:34 Tyron Smith's cap impact, obviously, is not going to be anywhere near that.
00:38 The talk is it's going to be more like $6.5 million.
00:40 Again, we'll wait and see.
00:42 But whatever the number ends up being, the Dallas Cowboys obviously did not want to go
00:47 there.
00:48 For the Jets, this is a gigantic win.
00:51 There'll be a lot of people that talk about how Tyron Smith has an injury history, and
00:54 he does, at age 33.
00:55 But last year, he played all but four games, and he played at a literal all-pro level,
01:01 6'5", 318 pounds, and takes extraordinary care of his body.
01:06 What the Cowboys did with him last year, we called it Tyron Wednesdays.
01:09 He took a lot of time off during the course of the week, but because he's so well-prepared,
01:13 physically and otherwise, he didn't need to practice on a Wednesday, and sometimes not
01:17 on a Tuesday or a Thursday or a Friday.
01:21 And then he went out on Sunday and dominated.
01:24 This is a future Hall of Fame player when his career is done.
01:27 Five years after that, he will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, and sometime,
01:33 maybe even before that, he'll be in the Ring of Honor back here in North Texas.
01:37 But now, he's heading to New York.
01:38 This will be a little bit of a duck out of water.
01:40 This is not, Tyron Smith is not a New York kind of guy, that's for sure.
01:45 In fact, he's very much a Jones family guy, which is what makes this so difficult for
01:50 some of the people involved.
01:51 For the Cowboys, the issue, and the truth about Tyron is, this is fine.
01:56 This move is totally acceptable, as long as you find a way to have an offensive line that's
02:02 at least as good as it was last year with Tyron, not to mention with Tyler Biatas at
02:07 center.
02:08 He's gone too.
02:09 Cowboys don't have enough draft picks to go fill all these spots that they're losing in
02:13 free agency, and because of our blow-it-up theory, don't spend anything that you don't
02:19 have to beyond 2024, have the entire roster, if possible, outside of the handful of stars,
02:25 be lame duck kind of guys, including the head coach and the coaching staff, and then maybe
02:29 start over in 2025.
02:33 Very dubious to think that the Cowboys are gonna put together an offensive line in 2024
02:40 that's as good as the one that Tyron Smith starred in in 2023.
02:45 Tyron Smith leaving the Cowboys where the door was open and going to the Jets where
02:50 the wallet was more open.
02:51 In Frisco with the Cowboys, Fish out.
