00:00 The Water Lantern Festival is coming up soon.
00:03 And last week, Lexi got the scoop
00:05 on what you can expect at this year's festival.
00:08 - Good morning, Rebecca.
00:11 Thank you for being here.
00:13 - Thank you for having me.
00:14 - Okay, so we have the Water Lantern Festival
00:17 coming here to Arizona and we are so excited.
00:20 Tell us all about the festival.
00:22 - Yes, we're so excited to come.
00:23 Our festival is all about connection, hope, love,
00:27 and bringing light to communities.
00:29 It's a perfect opportunity for people to remember
00:32 those who passed and just connect with their community.
00:35 - Okay, so walk me through what the festival will be like
00:39 for people who've never really experienced
00:41 something like this before.
00:43 - Yeah, so at the festival, we have,
00:46 you buy tickets beforehand and you'll pick up a lantern kit,
00:50 which includes everything you'll need
00:52 to make a lantern and decorate it.
00:55 And throughout the event, we have local vendors
00:58 and performers who come and games and scavenger hunts.
01:02 We also have a time where people can come up
01:05 and explain their lantern to others
01:08 and kind of have a memoriam or just share
01:12 whatever their lantern means to them with their community.
01:16 - And is that really typical for people to do lanterns
01:18 for loved ones who have passed?
01:22 - That is common, but we also just have people
01:24 who want to gather together and have fun.
01:27 It really depends and it can be individualized
01:29 based on what people are looking for.
01:31 - Oh, that's really beautiful.
01:32 And so I haven't been to one of your specific events yet,
01:36 but I am just imagining as I've seen other water lanterns
01:39 that this is just an incredible thing
01:41 that just kind of lights up the whole night.
01:43 I mean, tell me a little bit about
01:45 what it's like to experience this.
01:47 - Yeah, as the sun sets, everyone releases their lanterns
01:51 onto the water and it is one of the most beautiful things
01:55 to watch, it really will just take your breath away
01:57 and it's just a beautiful feeling to be present
02:00 with all those people when that happens.
02:02 - Ah, it sounds gorgeous.
02:03 And I know you kind of mentioned some of the things,
02:06 the other things that are gonna happen
02:08 while people are there and getting ready
02:10 to release their lantern,
02:11 but tell me about some of the other things.
02:12 I know there's gonna be food and all kinds of great stuff.
02:15 - Yeah, there's gonna be performers
02:18 and also just a lot of chances to have fun with people.
02:21 Like in our lantern kits, we also give away things
02:24 like playing cards or even conversation cards,
02:27 which are cards with questions to ask people
02:29 just to get to know them better.
02:31 And we also have a chance to do a scavenger hunt.
02:34 - Oh, that's so fun, I love a scavenger hunt.
02:37 This sounds like such a fun,
02:39 very family-friendly event, it sounds like.
02:43 - Yes.
02:43 - So tell everybody where this is gonna be held
02:46 and how they get more information.
02:48 - Yes, this is going to be held at Surprise Community Park
02:51 and you can go to our website, waterlanternfestival.com
02:56 to get more information and buy tickets.
02:59 - And I know this is a really big deal for you guys.
03:01 I mean, you have held festivals
03:03 that have had thousands of people present.
03:05 So this is something that people will be prepared
03:07 to see a lot of friends and family,
03:09 to see a lot of their community members, right?
03:11 - Yes, definitely.
03:13 - Oh, that's great.
03:14 All right, well, one more little tidbit
03:16 because I wanna know when it comes to
03:18 these lanterns being released.
03:21 I mean, you said it happens right at sunset.
03:24 What if someone happened to come late or something,
03:25 could they still come and enjoy and just see the lanterns?
03:28 Will they be out on the water all night?
03:31 - So they'll be out on the water for about an hour
03:34 for people to come and enjoy the site.
03:36 And then we have a process, we use a buoy line
03:39 to clean up all the lanterns before we leave
03:42 to make sure that we are being environmentally friendly
03:45 and cleaning up any garbage or anything
03:49 that remains after the festival.
03:51 - That's beautiful.
03:52 Well, I think the picture of this sounds absolutely gorgeous
03:55 and I love that you are really adamant
03:57 about cleaning up afterwards.
03:58 So thank you so much, Rebecca,
04:00 for telling us all about this beautiful event.
04:03 - Thank you so much for having me.
