00:00Thora was one of the odd ones.
00:04And this guy who had her, he wanted to keep her and he had plans to take her ears off
00:09and breed her.
00:10That just broke my heart and I couldn't let that happen.
00:13So I scooped her up immediately.
00:15I'm Erin and this is Thora's story for GeoBeats.
00:17So as far as I knew, I had this puppy and I knew I saved her ears and I saved her for
00:22a life of potentially breeding other dogs.
00:25But what I didn't know is that she was deaf and it was through just living with her that
00:29I realized like she just wasn't responding to things that dogs normally would respond
00:33to.
00:34I live in a busy city, so you get lots of city noises around and she was completely
00:41unbothered.
00:42I'd come home and she'd be like perfectly sleeping away and didn't hear me at all.
00:46So of course I was just like, I'm going to give her the life that she deserves.

00:56to help her the best I could to make her feel safe and to do all the right things.
01:00For the last two years, her and I have been getting to know each other.
01:07It's like a superpower.
01:08She'll never respond to a barking dog, fireworks, sirens.
01:15I live in an apartment and she can't hear what's going on beneath me or on top of me.
01:20She can't hear my neighbors.
01:21So it's kind of perfect.
01:23We communicate via hand signs and body language.
01:28It took us a little while to find our groove, but oh my gosh, she's so awesome.
01:33The way she acts and the way she kind of looks, she's like a piglet dinosaur alien.
01:38If I had to be like really detailed about it, she's kind of looks like a cappuccino.
01:50She's like a milk frothy on the top and then just sort of like mocha colored on the bottom
01:56with a little like paintbrush tail.
01:59She's 45 pounds.
02:00I think she was meant to be bigger, but she's just a little deaf runt.
02:04Like she just didn't grow much.
02:06Some people are a little bit cautious of her and they kind of like back off a little bit,
02:10but I do get a lot of smiles just because whenever she walks, she has this huge smile
02:15on her face and she just doesn't look like too many dogs that you see.
02:20Having her, I've learned to just really adjust my own expectations for dogs and what dog
02:26behavior looks like because she learns so differently than anyone else.
02:30And I think that that's just like a really important sort of quality to have just in general.
02:34Everyone's different, just like dogs.
02:39She has special needs, but she is so, so special.
