00:00 I'm Ezra Araya and this is the Manila Times.
00:03 Our guest for today is local actress, singer, and the newest member of MTR-CB, Ms. John Marini.
00:12 Welcome to the Manila Times, Ms. John.
00:14 Hi! Thank you. Thank you for having me.
00:17 Ms. John, tell us about your journey. So a little throwback.
00:22 So your journey in acting through ABS-CBN and then after that, as well as taking a break to start family life.
00:30 Okay, so are you ready for the long journey? Because we're going to talk of 30+ years.
00:38 Wow!
00:39 I'm going to make it…
00:40 Veteran actress, Ms. John.
00:43 Old. More like an old artiste. That's what I call myself. And I don't feel small when I call myself an old artiste because that's the truth.
00:52 Because when you say veteran, I feel like that's overrated for what I contributed to the industry. I don't know.
01:02 In my opinion, my journey in the showbiz industry, I can't say that I really dreamt of becoming a famous person.
01:16 Although I would sing during my younger years because I come from a family of musicians, singers, educators. That's my background.
01:26 From my mother's side of the family, they are the educators or musical geniuses.
01:37 On my father's side, he's a great singer. So I was exposed to his hobbies, basically.
01:47 So I love to sing. So what I thought of before was to be a singer like Pops Fernandez.
01:54 That's how I was. I was like a kid, that was my idol. And then eventually, I became Sharon.
01:59 So those were my inspirations. But becoming famous is not part of my dream.
02:08 So when I auditioned for ANG TV, I expected that I would be packaged as a singer.
02:22 If I could enter, I would be a singer. Which was a dream come true.
02:28 When I finally got in, we started shooting ANG TV, I started singing, I went to the recording studio. But for a 14-year-old, it was a great experience.
02:38 When I got paired with Gerard, I had a future lifetime partner. So that was the purpose of "Malasa Puso" in my life.
02:47 And then, in the year 2000, we got married. I did not take a break from showbiz.
02:59 We really wanted to start a family, but I also wanted to continue working.
03:07 I knew that I was young and I can still work while starting a family with Gerard.
03:16 So the plan to quit was not part of the equation.
03:23 Everything happened very naturally because we had our first baby in 2001.
03:34 So that's a year and a half after we got married. So the pacing was good.
03:40 It just so happened that after I gave birth to Rian, our firstborn, I did not appear on ABS-CBN anymore.
03:48 GMA offered me a project and that's why our order of priorities did not have major adjustments.
03:56 Like, "Oh, we need to do this, we need to sacrifice this much to be able to do this much."
04:02 So it was clear to us that we really wanted to be hands-on with our parenting and also to commit ourselves,
04:13 the two of us, to really be there for each other.
04:17 That's why we were so happy if our shows do not...
04:23 We would do one show after the other and we would not do it together. He would do it first and then I would do it.
04:32 So the traffic of work was good in terms of showbiz work.
04:40 So yeah, I guess I can't say that I took a break.
04:45 It's so amazing how you went about your 30 years of career in showbiz.
04:50 You started at the early age of 14 years old at ANG TV with ABS-CBN.
04:56 And then through and through, you started as a singer and then you met your husband on the set of "Pangako Sayo". Is that correct?
05:05 Yes.
05:06 From the heart, you met your husband, Gerard Pizaras.
05:11 We finally orchestrated, I believe.
05:14 Orchestrated, but it became true love. And then you had your first kid.
05:18 And like you said, I want to tell you, ma'am, that no breaks, no buts.
05:23 You never stopped. You were still a working mommy even after having your second child.
05:29 And then you transferred to GMA where you explored a wider range of acting roles.
05:35 So it's really a woman empowerment, I can say, in your journey.
05:42 And then you were, and right now, you're still, I think your latest show is with GMA, "Makiling". Is that correct, ma'am, as Professor Nora Acero?
05:53 Yeah. Good thing you know.
05:57 So, you never stopped.
06:00 I did for a few years.
06:01 For so many years.
06:02 And then you mentioned about homeschooling your own children. And I must say, that's very challenging.
06:10 Because when you just bring them to school, it's already challenging. So tell us more about your homeschooling.
06:16 I know you have two daughters. Is that correct, ma'am?
06:19 No, I have a daughter and a son.
06:21 A daughter and a son. So it's a pair. So tell us more about homeschooling them.
06:26 A lot of people who watch homeschooling think that it's not a diploma or it's not connected to the curriculum because it's homeschooled.
06:39 But I know homeschooling, in fact, is the children would be homeschooled at home, but they are following the curriculum and they are graduating and they have their own diplomas. Is that correct, ma'am?
06:53 Yes, that's correct. So during the pandemic, online schooling was opened, right?
07:00 So that's when people became more familiar with homeschooling because it would be mentioned from time to time on social media platforms.
07:10 But apparently, homeschooling in its entirety was not explained to a lot of people. So they thought that online schooling is homeschooling.
07:28 So homeschooling, you said it, yes, it is actually a system where you transfer the school to the comforts of your home.
07:42 But you still have a curriculum guide, ma'am.
07:45 Yes, you have a curriculum that you follow. In my case, of course, the DepEd should be accredited, but in our case as a family, DepEd accredited and also we chose American curriculum because as we went along with our homeschooling,
08:09 of course I learned the future plans of my children pre-pandemic. They would have plans in their head that I want to take further studies abroad.
08:19 So to be sure that everything will be credited, I opted for US curriculum just to get credit in other countries.
08:29 But not because I'm avoiding Filipino and early Pandepuna. No, that's not the case. Because I would also teach that, my load was doubled.
08:40 So homeschooling is like that. The kind of homeschooling that I am advocating and I have practiced for nine years and which I will practice in the final year, this coming school year.
08:55 So last year of homeschooling, my son, it was a bit sad but it was okay because it was over.
09:05 What we did was we enrolled, that's the term that I will use, we enrolled as a homeschooling family in a local provider here in the Philippines and then from that provider, you can choose different curriculum or materials.
09:29 In our case, in the family, I decided which ones I want to use because you will be offered several.
09:40 So I chose them based on their interests.
09:43 The first year of homeschooling, we were still getting to know the stage as parent educator and learners. So I wanted to know my kids individually as learners because I know them as their child.
10:00 But as learners, it would be my first time to be exposed to them and vice versa, to be exposed to me as their primary educator.
10:09 So I chose them and then what will happen as you go along?
10:14 It's good because with the provider that I chose, there is support from the advisors.
10:21 So maybe it's just me, I didn't abuse my advisors because prior to enrolling ourselves, enrolling our family in the system, I had years of research and I immersed myself in homeschooling.
10:44 I learned a lot.
10:51 I didn't stop there with "I want to homeschool my children." I really went on to know more about it.
11:00 I learned if I can do it. It came to a point that I would read all the blogs of the day in the life of a homeschooling family.
11:10 I have a question. You mentioned earlier that it's your last year of homeschooling, you're the youngest.
11:17 For those people who don't know about homeschooling, how early can you start and at what age or at what level do you end?
11:27 I'm guessing that college can't homeschool. So at what age does it start and up until what level can you homeschool?
11:37 Up to grade 12. So you can start as early as preschool, pre-K.
11:46 I started a bit late because I started when my son was in the fourth grade and my eldest was in the eighth grade.
11:59 So it was a bit late but it was never too late because I realized that it was really timing. They were ready for that at that time.
12:09 I want to honor him because he has been very supportive of me.
12:12 That's not an honor, I'm just being arrogant in this interview. But I want to honor him because he's very supportive of me.
12:20 He never denied my trips in life. A lot of them were not good ideas but he was always there. He's always been there.
12:33 Even right now, here in my work as a board member, I would express to him at the end of the day when I go home,
12:41 I would tell him if I'm frustrated with this or if I think it's right that I made this decision.
12:47 He's always there, all eyes, all ears. He's always there listening to me and he's very supportive.
12:55 So it helps also that someone is listening to me at the end of the day.
13:04 And he's also intentional in being my husband. He readily gives his feedback right away.
13:12 I think next time, he'll consider this and that.
13:17 So going back to the agency to block inappropriate content, I hope one day we will be that.
13:30 Only time will tell and of course the office of the president will tell and also even if it's a long process,
13:40 I hope I'm still there when it happens so I can experience the level up of functions and scope of work of MTRCV.
13:54 But if not, whatever program we have right now to help social media users and content creators,
14:03 I will support and I will be part of 100%.
14:11 I committed also to Chair Lala that in the responsible watching,
14:17 I will be part of the team that goes nationwide to help in spreading information.
14:27 I'm willing to do that as well. So that will be my contribution at the moment.
14:31 And I totally, I fully believe that the program of Chair Lala, Responsable watching, will do great things
14:40 because the intentions behind it are very good.
14:44 So I hope that social media platforms will also cooperate with us because so far there are two meetings of the agency
14:58 and their response to it is very positive and they are very willing to be in partnership with us,
15:06 especially in the stage of events where we can share the information.
15:19 They have the power but we have the heart and the advocacy to reach the Filipino families, to protect the Filipino child.
15:30 So more than anything, the intention behind it is that I hope there will be a positive outcome in the future
15:47 that will give a wider range of authority to MTRCV.
15:57 So maybe it's not just the 31 board members that need to be there, maybe 100 plus if ever.
16:02 There are a lot of things that need to be filtered, not filtered, there are a lot of things that need to be monitored, the content.
16:09 There are a lot of things, it's really hard. I understand that.
16:13 Maybe that's why a lot of parents are panicking because it's really unstoppable.
16:20 But you know, everything has limitations.
16:24 So can't wait to see what lies ahead or what's in the future because everything can be done.
16:38 Very well said, ma'am. Responsible watching and being a full-time mother, wife, and actress. Amazing, ma'am.
16:46 Thank you so much, actress, singer, and one of the newest members of MTRCV, Ms. John Marini.
16:53 Maraming salamat po, ma'am.
16:55 Thank you.
16:57 Thank you.
17:00 Thank you.
17:02 Thank you.
