12 of the LA Clippers' 15 players will wear social justice statements on their uniforms
Transcript
00:00 When the NBA restart officially begins this Thursday, keen-eyed LA Clippers fans may notice
00:05 something different about the jerseys the players are wearing.
00:07 Beginning later this week, players that have chosen to do so will start wearing social
00:10 justice statements on the back of their uniform where their name usually sits.
00:13 It's part of the league's initiative to bring more attention to social issues, which
00:17 also includes planning to phrase "Black Lives Matter" on the court above the NBA
00:21 logo.
00:22 Here's what each member of the Clippers will be wearing.
00:24 Amir Coffey will wear "How Many More?"
00:25 Jermichael Green will wear "Black Lives Matter."
00:28 Montrezl Harrell will wear "How Many More?"
00:30 Reggie Jackson will wear "Liberation."
00:32 Terrence Mann will wear "I Am a Man."
00:34 Rodney Magruder will wear "Peace."
00:36 Marcus Morris will wear "Education Reform."
00:38 Joaquin Noah will wear "Justice."
00:40 Patrick Patterson will wear "I Am a Man."
00:42 Landry Schamett will wear "Equality."
00:44 Lou Williams will wear "Equality."
00:46 And Ibiza Zubats will wear "Enough."
00:48 Patrick Beverley, Paul George, and Kawhi Leonard are among the 16% of players participating
00:53 in the restart that decided against wearing a statement, though it's not because they
00:57 don't support the cause.
00:58 Earlier this month, Leonard explained the reasoning behind his decision, saying, "We've
01:01 been dealing with this situation.
01:03 We've been giving back to our communities.
01:04 I'm going to keep on doing what I've been doing, giving back to my community, educating
01:09 my community, and just keep going from there.
01:11 It doesn't matter if we have a statement back up our jersey.
01:13 It's about doing the work."
01:15 As far as how the Clippers are demonstrating during the season, the LA Times' Brad Turner
01:20 reported last week that LA is among a group of teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers,
01:24 Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and Boston Celtics, that play Manil during the national
01:28 anthem during the upcoming restart.
01:30 On Tuesday, Clippers coach, Brock Rivers, didn't explicitly say that he would kneel
01:34 as well, but did say that he would do whatever his players decided to do this Thursday and
01:38 beyond, saying, "We need to follow the youth on this movement.
01:42 We need to follow what they want to do, enlist in what they want to do and say, and then
01:46 follow them.
01:47 And so as a coach, I'm going to do that.
01:48 I'm going to let my players lead, and I'll follow."
01:51 Clippers will face off the Lakers this Thursday, July 30th at 9 p.m. Eastern to start the resumed
01:56 season.
