We all know that the 2024 Can-Am Maverick R can shred through the desert like no other, but how does it fare on the East Coast? We take the 240-hp side-by-side to Windrock Park in Oliver Springs, Tennessee to find out if it is a rock crawler or if it should stick to wide-open sand tracks.

00:00 (engine revving)
00:00 (laughing)
00:01 - All right, Zach, we just got our 2024 Canyon Maverick R
00:04 back from Thumperfab who built us a new ROPS
00:07 and it looks awesome.
00:08 - Yeah.
00:09 - But that's not why we're here.
00:10 We are here because this means we can now drive
00:12 our Maverick R and we decided to bring it out to Windrock
00:15 to find out if it'll rock crawl.
00:17 We know it's an absolute screaming eagle out in the desert
00:20 in whoops, in sand washes.
00:21 It will best anything on the trail,
00:23 especially at its $40,000 price point.
00:25 - But we don't live in Utah.
00:26 We live in Tennessee where wide open
00:29 is really only fitting for the interstate.
00:31 - Yes.
00:32 - And there are some private tracks down South
00:34 where you can really let this thing eat.
00:36 240 horsepower turbocharged triple.
00:38 But for the most part, trails look a lot like this,
00:40 which is to say tight and narrow.
00:42 And for a rig like this with over 78 inches of track width,
00:45 that's tough.
00:46 And more importantly, it's got a dual clutch gearbox,
00:48 which in our experience is not great in the rocks.
00:50 Our past experience has been limited to the Talon,
00:53 which feels really herky-jerky.
00:55 Rock gardens and any sort of rock climbing.
00:57 This is different.
00:58 - We spent a little bit of time out in Nevada
00:59 over some really chunky baby heads
01:01 and it felt really smooth.
01:02 I wanna know if that's still true out here.
01:04 - And the nice thing is we do have some like throttle modes
01:06 in this thing, so it can calm the Maverick R's
01:08 natural throttle response down a little bit.
01:10 So you're not always at full send.
01:11 - So our question is, do East coasters need to go looking
01:14 somewhere else when it comes time to buy the next sport
01:16 side by side?
01:17 Is this machine just not for us?
01:19 I bet the answer is no.
01:21 I think this thing will be just fine out here.
01:23 What do you think?
01:24 - I agree.
01:25 And I'm not just saying that.
01:25 We put this thing on our RTI ramp
01:27 and it did a really good score,
01:28 especially for something that's meant for the desert.
01:30 Even at over 2,200 pounds, even at 78 inches wide,
01:33 even with the DCT, this thing managed a 600 and what?
01:37 A 660?
01:37 - 606.
01:38 - Oh, 606.
01:39 Okay, a 606 on our RTI.
01:41 That is really good.
01:42 That's within spitting distance of the top rigs
01:44 we have ever tested.
01:45 And keep in mind, this is a desert railer.
01:48 This is not a rock crawler.
01:49 I think you're right.
01:50 I think she's gonna do great.
01:51 Theories are only as good as the paper they're written on.
01:53 Let's get after it.
01:54 Kardo sponsored this video and sent us two
01:56 of their new systems.
01:57 The first is the Edge ORV communicator.
01:59 And the second is the Edge Phones headphones.
02:01 That's gonna be great because your spotter
02:02 doesn't wanna be wearing a lid all the time.
02:04 And the Edge Phones will incorporate
02:05 the Kardo Pactalk Edge right into the phones.
02:08 You take your lid off, you put the headphones on,
02:10 and you're connected to the guy in the side-by-side.
02:12 The other nice thing is both systems are wireless,
02:14 so nobody's tethered to a rig.
02:16 I don't know how many times I've been trying to spot Aaron
02:18 with my helmet on and nearly busted my tail
02:20 because I just couldn't see down.
02:21 The Edge ORV uses Kardo's dynamic mesh communication system,
02:25 which is great.
02:26 It can group up to 15 different riders together,
02:28 which is excellent if you have a big group.
02:30 And they'll connect up to a mile away between two rigs
02:33 or up to five miles away
02:34 if you've got a much bigger riding group.
02:36 It does require line of sight, but if you get dropped,
02:38 they automatically reconnect once you're back in range.
02:40 One of the things I really appreciate
02:41 is you don't have to fish your phone out of your pocket.
02:44 It's super tough to do when you're riding around
02:45 with straps and lids and all the rest of that.
02:47 Kardo uses natural voice technology.
02:49 You just say, "Hey, Kardo, do X," and it'll do it.
02:52 It can also work with Siri and OK Google.
02:54 I really liked that they're IP67 water, dust, and mudproof
02:58 because, well, look at me.
03:00 It's gross out here.
03:01 I need a bath.
03:02 And both the Edge phones and the Pactalk Edge
03:04 are powered by JBL speakers.
03:06 And they have one-way directional mics,
03:08 which cut out wind noise and engine noise.
03:10 And if you think that sounds like nonsense,
03:12 we were riding around earlier
03:13 in that crap can bug that we built,
03:15 and you don't hear any of that in the headphones.
03:17 All you hear is the guy next to you talking in your ear.
03:19 Another cool thing is audio mixing.
03:21 You can have your GPS, your music,
03:22 and the intercom running all at the same time,
03:24 and the Kardo just automatically sorts it out for you.
03:27 Kardo also built a really slick app
03:28 that works with all of their communicators.
03:30 You can do just about everything
03:32 right in the palm of your hand.
03:33 There are over-the-air updates.
03:35 You can set up JBL audio profiles for each user.
03:37 You can adjust the mic sensitivity.
03:39 And importantly for us,
03:40 you can record audio for content creation.
03:43 But maybe my favorite thing about it
03:45 is that it installs right into your helmet
03:47 with no tools required.
03:48 You can do it all by hand.
03:49 It takes about 10 minutes to snap in.
03:51 Everything is adhesived and Velcroed,
03:53 and you are good to go.
03:54 I mean, it took two tools earlier today to put them in.
03:56 - Well.
03:57 - Us tools.
03:58 - Yeah, two tools.
03:59 - Ta-ta-ta.
04:00 - And the best part for you all
04:01 is that Kardo's giving you a 10% discount
04:03 just for being our viewers.
04:05 So book the link in the description below and get 10% off.
04:08 Kardo's are gonna be pretty handy
04:09 because we're here on Trail 22.
04:11 It's a relatively short trail
04:12 right at the beginning of Windrock.
04:13 It's got a couple of good rock gardens
04:15 and a couple of decent steps.
04:16 They're gonna be a lot of fun to play around with
04:18 with the Mav-R.
04:19 You ready?
04:20 - Yeah, man.
04:21 - This is the first little run of baby heads.
04:22 It's probably not gonna feel like anything in that thing.
04:24 I just beat my way across this in the bug
04:27 and nearly lost all of my fillings.
04:30 You don't really need a spotter.
04:31 I just wanna see what that looks like from the outside.
04:34 Yeah, at your leisure, bud.
04:35 - All right, let's go.
04:36 (motor rumbling)
04:39 - Oh, look at her.
04:43 (motor rumbling)
04:44 Oh, man.
04:45 - Oh, I caught her.
04:46 - Watch this.
04:47 - I caught her.
04:48 - Watch this go.
04:48 (motor rumbling)
04:50 (laughing)
04:52 - Just gonna watch my spotter.
04:53 - Yeah, he's looking at me, bud.
04:56 (laughing)
04:58 That thing looks so cool.
05:00 - Yeah.
05:01 Dude, it is eating this up.
05:04 It does not care.
05:06 Asshole.
05:07 - I mean, the crazy part is
05:08 that's without the smart shocks, right?
05:10 - Yeah, no, this is just normal.
05:12 It'll freeze right up and...
05:14 (imitating motor rumbling)
05:16 - Well, what do you think?
05:16 - It's mind-blowing.
05:18 Like, it's super smooth in here.
05:19 Our worries about the DCT were for naught.
05:22 I did put it down into normal mode
05:23 just to really back off, like I said, the throttle response,
05:26 but there's none of that snatchiness
05:28 you get in other rigs with DCTs.
05:30 It is buttery, like we talked about at Arizona.
05:33 A lot of cool gear whine,
05:35 but yeah, it's just, it doesn't care.
05:37 Coming up the rock garden, even without the smart shocks,
05:39 it's got articulation for days.
05:41 We've come over stuff up here
05:43 that in a rig you would think would be a better rock crawler
05:45 than this feels a little spicy,
05:46 and this thing is just planted.
05:47 It is steady.
05:48 So, so far, will it East Coast?
05:50 The answer is...
05:51 - Yes.
05:52 - Okay, next is some fun steppy steps.
05:53 So this is one of the fun obstacles on 22.
05:56 This is a series of stair steps.
05:58 There are a bunch of different lines here.
05:59 We're gonna have Aaron tackle one of the medium rare ones,
06:02 see how it does on 32s.
06:04 This is usually a pretty good challenge for a rig.
06:06 I wanna see how this thing does.
06:08 Let's get him going.
06:08 - And here we go.
06:09 (motor rumbling)
06:11 Keep your eyes on your spotter.
06:12 - Stay left like you were gonna go up the line,
06:14 but I'm gonna bring you up right here, okay?
06:17 - Okay.
06:18 (motor rumbling)
06:21 - Right hand down now, straighten up.
06:23 Right there.
06:25 All right, I'm gonna try not to mess you up here too bad.
06:27 Okay?
06:28 - Okay.
06:28 (laughing)
06:29 - This thing is way wider than I'm used to spotting,
06:31 so we'll see how it goes, all right?
06:32 - Yeah, it's way wider than I'm used to driving.
06:34 - You got lockers on?
06:35 - Yes, lockers on.
06:36 There's custom sport, sport plus, and normal.
06:40 - Normal it is.
06:41 All right, come on.
06:41 Just remember, if I say bump, get it.
06:43 - Yep.
06:44 - Come on, come on.
06:45 Oh, beautiful.
06:46 All the way just a little bit.
06:47 Straighten up.
06:48 Come to me, come to me.
06:50 Oh my God, this thing.
06:51 All right, stop, stop, stop.
06:53 Beautiful.
06:53 (laughing)
06:54 All right, here comes the real challenge.
06:56 So you're gonna go driver just a little bit, nice and slow.
06:58 Straighten up.
07:00 Okay, come to me, come to me, come to me.
07:02 Go, go, go.
07:03 Go, go, bump.
07:05 (laughing)
07:08 Holy crap.
07:09 - Wow.
07:10 - Man, I cannot believe how easy you made that look.
07:12 - Well, I can't believe how easy it felt.
07:14 I was waiting for the bump and you said bump it,
07:16 and I gave it like a quarter inch of throttle
07:17 and it just walked up.
07:19 - Dude, on 32s, that's unreal.
07:21 - You and I have both seen rigs on 35s
07:24 struggle with that step.
07:24 - Yeah, absolutely.
07:25 - And this just did not care.
07:26 - I think part of that's wheelbase.
07:28 That goes a long way.
07:28 A lot of it's articulation.
07:30 I mean, compared to how the old X3 Turbo RR used to do,
07:34 this thing is unreal.
07:35 - The bottom of it, I was like,
07:36 okay, this is gonna be a thing.
07:38 (laughing)
07:39 And I couldn't see the step you were talking about.
07:41 There's too much in front of me.
07:43 I was just sort of going on faith.
07:44 And if I had been by myself
07:46 and decided to take that line and never seen it,
07:48 I'm not sure I would have known it was there.
07:49 - Yeah, this thing did great.
07:51 - It's incredible.
07:52 - Well, that's 22.
07:53 Will it East Coast?
07:54 - Yes.
07:54 - Hell yes, it will.
07:55 - Hell yes.
07:56 - Watching this thing over those obstacles was excellent.
07:58 I can't wait to take this thing up 15.
08:01 - Yeah, it's the next thing we got to do with it.
08:03 - Maybe 35s then 15s?
08:04 - Yeah, I think 35s then 15.
08:06 A lot of numbers involved.
08:07 But yeah, we came out here to answer,
08:09 will it rock crawl?
08:10 And that's an emphatic, emphatic yes.
08:12 If you're worried about whether or not a Mav-R
08:14 is too much for the East Coast, the answer is no.
08:17 More horsepower is never the problem.
08:19 - Nope.
08:20 There's a chance you'll get ahold of one of these
08:21 and never see the floorboard if you live out here,
08:23 but you won't care because it is so good at everything.
08:27 - Yeah, absolutely.
08:28 We got to get cleaned up and home, I guess.
08:30 - Yeah, I got to get back to Virginia.
08:31 Thanks for watching.
08:32 Check us out five days a week at utvdriver.com.
08:35 We've got news, reviews, and side-by-sides.
08:37 And then head over to our social medias,
08:39 Facebook, Instagram, TikTok.
08:41 We'll see you there.
08:41 - You know, we sometimes shoot multiple videos in a day.
08:45 And today we did, we finished the bug build
08:47 and also a little bit on the Mav-R.
08:49 And that meant having to take this down 22,
08:51 which I was not really prepared to do.
08:54 Some gave all of their spot welds.
