Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United's 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund secured the win for Erik ten Hag's side on a disappointing night for the Magpies. Anthony Gordon's second-half equaliser and Lewis Hall's late strike gave them hope, but it wasn't enough as the race for Europe heads to the final game of the Premier League season.

00:00 So Newcastle United's quest for European football has taken a very big bump.
00:06 Today after a speed bump against Brighton has taken a massive bump.
00:10 They lost 3-2 at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
00:14 A real disappointing day for any house side.
00:16 It's hard to really describe the match I think.
00:19 Everyone came into this, certainly Newcastle fans would have come into this the most confident they've ever been.
00:23 Again the result at Old Trafford, you know they've won once here in the Premier League.
00:26 But we all remember the fact they won in the Carabao Cup back in November.
00:30 They've beaten Manchester United in the last three times they've played them.
00:33 So everyone, everyone in this game was a bit positive for once about Newcastle.
00:36 Their away form hasn't been great.
00:38 And you thought maybe they could get over that line, just that one really big game,
00:42 and the statement and performance. But unfortunately that just wasn't going to happen tonight.
00:45 They failed to really grab hold of the game.
00:47 Manchester United have been poor all season, really defensively being not very good.
00:53 Newcastle just couldn't test them really.
00:56 They made their defence look good, even though they're not.
01:00 It was weird when Casemiro and Johnny Evans started in the back and they weren't really tested by Newcastle.
01:05 It was hard to sort of analyse.
01:07 Newcastle just didn't turn up in the big moments when they needed their big players to turn up
01:11 and they needed to take the chances. It just didn't happen.
01:13 It was a, we'll go through the match, it was a bright start for them to be fair.
01:17 You know they've played football and I've seen that first half especially, they probably edged it.
01:22 Of course Manchester United had some chances and looked very dangerous in corners.
01:26 But yeah, Newcastle did really well.
01:28 They will be aggrieved of the fact that Anthony Gordon wasn't awarded a penalty for a foul by Amr Abad.
01:34 Now the decision initially from, I think most people in the crowd thought it was a Casemiro tackle
01:39 that was going to be checked by VAR.
01:41 That was a brilliant tackle from Casemiro, fair play.
01:44 But the replay, first replay straight away, it looks like a foul from Amr Abad.
01:48 He almost took the shoulder and then catching in the ankle. VAR checked that in for some reason.
01:53 I honestly have no idea why, but VAR decided Amr Abad stood up on Anthony Gordon's ankle.
01:59 He's worth a penalty and gets waved away.
02:03 And then Newcastle go behind.
02:05 You know Newcastle then in the half time 1-0 behind and without a penalty.
02:09 It was the goal. Again it's hard to describe the goal.
02:12 The goal was, it was weird. It came out of nowhere.
02:14 Newcastle just sort of, Manchester United won the ball back.
02:17 The pass went past a couple defenders and all of a sudden Kobe Mainu in the box.
02:21 Ineg as a space, Kieran Trippier was playing him on.
02:23 Now Kieran Trippier was making his first start since the game against Wolves back in early March.
02:28 And he was just caught out of position and Mainu controlled the ball and a simple finish past Bravka.
02:32 And Newcastle go 1-0 behind.
02:34 And yeah going into half time 1-0 down in a half that they probably wanted going into half time's coolest level.
02:40 But they came out the second half firing. Anthony Gordon got them the back level.
02:43 Almost straight away it was brilliant work from Alexander Isak to feed Jacob Murphy.
02:48 Who then put in a delicious ball across the back post where Gordon was there to tap home.
02:52 It was pretty similar to the one he scored actually against Manchester United at St James Park.
02:55 Where he was found in the back post and got in the end of it.
02:58 And then moments later Ineg Asa had a chance to make it 2-1.
03:01 Gordon again goes through. He sent through 2-1-1 with Alexander Isak alongside Amr Abbas.
03:09 But his pass to Isak just wasn't there. And that was the story of Newcastle's game pretty much all night.
03:15 That final ball, that final decision, that final action just wasn't there.
03:19 And Amr Abbas did just enough to block Isak's shot which he then looped over the keeper and hit the bar.
03:24 And went out for a corner. Maybe then I think the warning signs people probably should have realised.
03:27 That this might be one of them days and it certainly turned out to be that.
03:30 Newcastle then made changes. Joe Linton was brought on. Amr Amran was brought on.
03:35 And then Joe Linton fed Sean Longstaff. He goes through and Omanna saves.
03:40 That was the moment I think when Sean Longstaff goes through 1-1 in that shot save.
03:44 Don't get me wrong, he's actually a scorer but Sean Longstaff's a good scorer as well.
03:47 You can't come to Old Trafford, no matter what form Manchester United are in,
03:51 what team they put out, you can't come to Old Trafford and miss 2-1-1's like that.
03:54 And expect to come away with anything from the game.
03:56 And they were punished for that. Rasmus Hoyland, sorry, before that, Ahmad Diallo scored.
04:01 Again, a strange one. Newcastle couldn't deal with Man U's corners all game.
04:06 And they had a couple of warning signs before where the ball had found itself to the back post of Diallo.
04:12 Who missed a shot. And I think then Fernandes had another shot as well.
04:15 And they never really picked that up. And again, it was a corner at the near post.
04:19 Murphy tries to clear it. He heads it out. Could his header be better? Yes.
04:22 But it was a reaction header that you've just got to head.
04:25 And that was Diallo with probably seven or eight yards of space, much like Man U was for his goal.
04:30 And he smashed it home. Dubravka, maybe some complaints about his.
04:33 I thought it was a very good effort and I hesitate to blame Dubravka for that one.
04:38 It was just a brilliant shot by Ahmad. But yes, they had the warning signs. They didn't learn.
04:43 And they were punished for that. They were then punished again.
04:46 Rasmus Hoyland came on. And it was a simple goal.
04:50 They'd be really disappointed with the three goals conceded. Really, really disappointed.
04:53 Eddie Howe will be speaking now. He'll probably say that because Hoyland just managed to get through.
04:57 Yes, get past the defence and just took it home in the far post.
05:02 I think if you're going to be critical over Dubravka for any goal, it would be that one.
05:07 I think he could have got a hand to it. He's a stronger hand to it.
05:10 He goes in the corner. 3-1. You don't really fancy Newcastle get back into it.
05:13 They had their moments. And then six minutes of ad time went up from the fourth official.
05:19 Newcastle press him but never really caused Onana too many problems.
05:23 Joe Linton had had a header saved by Onana but I don't think that was going in.
05:27 So, they didn't have too many opportunities really to test the goalkeeper.
05:30 But then, corner comes in and gets headed out. Lewis Hall takes a touch and smashes into the far corner.
05:35 It's a brilliant goal from Lewis Hall. He was the best player on the pitch for Newcastle United without a shadow of a doubt.
05:39 It was a fantastic goal. A real sort of statement performance.
05:43 One that you can tell he's grown in confidence, playing a bit more, playing a bit more.
05:47 And it was a brilliant finish. It was of course his second goal here at Old Trafford.
05:50 After scoring in the Carabao Cup. It wasn't a similar goal because that one was a volley but it was in the same corner.
05:56 And yeah, Newcastle looked like they had a real good prospect on their hands if he can play more regular games next year.
06:03 But that goal came in the first minute of six ad time and there just wasn't enough time for them to get themselves back in the match.
06:08 And yeah, they fall to a 3-2 defeat. Coupled by the fact that Chelsea then beat Brighton means sixth place is out of their hands.
06:15 You know, if Chelsea just get a point against Bournemouth the weekend, that's theirs.
06:20 And Newcastle United now need to be Brentford or certainly they need a match or better,
06:25 Manchester United's result against Brighton on Sunday to have a chance of finishing seventh.
06:29 And of course, if they don't finish seventh, there's no European football at all.
06:32 Seventh place would mean they're supporting Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, sorry.
06:37 So, yeah, lots of permutations. But at the end of the day, it's now Newcastle's sixth place destiny is now out of their hands.
06:42 And they're going to have to hope that they can perform at Brentford.
06:45 In the ground, they have had a good recent record, but that means nothing on the last game of the season.
06:50 They haven't performed well on the travel ball all season.
06:53 They need one big performance at Brentford to try and get there, finish seventh and get European football back to St James' Park.
06:58 But yes, a disappointing night for any outside in a game that they really would have felt that they should have took something from.
07:05 And maybe could have. A couple of stopping errors, missed chances.
07:07 But yeah, it was a disappointing performance, disappointing night overall for Newcastle United.
07:11 Thank you.
