00:00 Here is Alex. He is an ordinary guy who works from 9 to 17. He does not have a salary of 6 figures and he can afford only one wave of opportunity, even if he has always dreamed of something more extravagant.
00:16 And here is Henry and his elegant hat. Not bad, is it? It's French. You should notice from his clothes that he is, 1) completely out of fashion and 2) rather rich.
00:30 And yes, you are looking at Henry II of France, a monarch straight out of the 16th century, who could offer himself everything he wanted at the time. And he is not out of fashion at all, he is even rather in the mood for his time.
00:46 Of course, Alex and Henry never met and never will meet. After all, they come from different eras and their statuses are quite different too.
00:58 But what would you say if you were told that Alex leads a much more luxurious life than Henry II?
01:05 It may not seem very convincing, but most of the people who will watch this video lead a more luxurious life than a king of the Middle Ages. Let's find out how.
01:15 Royal carriages may seem romantic, no matter their sophistication in the Middle Ages, they could never compete with the most rusty and most elaborate car of today.
01:27 We are not even talking about air conditioning, radio and other luxury options. It is more about the quality of the roads and general comfort.
01:36 Our modern suspensions are wonderful, and even if there is evidence that many carriages of the time had a similar system, they still cannot be compared to what we have today.
01:50 The next on the list is quite obvious, medicine. Certainly, our insurance costs us a lot today, and sometimes it is cheaper to extract a tooth than to treat it.
02:01 But at least you will not be treated with cataplasms like mustard. These can indeed prove beneficial, but we sometimes need more advanced remedies.
02:11 Generally, a headache is more likely to disappear with the help of an aspirin, as we all have in our pharmacies at home, than with herbs with a sweet smell.
02:20 In the Middle Ages, the rebels used rose, lavender, sage and fennel to help relieve headaches.
02:27 And if something more serious happened to someone today, they would consult a professional with a real diploma, and not some kind of magician. Yes, it was rather common in the Middle Ages.
02:38 Okay, enough about morbid things. Besides, something cool is happening right now.
02:43 Alex recently met a girl on a dating app, and today is their first date.
02:49 Henri II of France would have been terribly jealous if he had known that such a thing was possible.
02:55 He married at the age of 14, and his wife was from the illustrious family of Médicis.
03:01 Henri could not simply choose any peasant he found to his liking. The aristocracy had to marry judiciously, taking into account all the financial and political advantages involved.
03:12 It seems that in terms of love, Alex of the 21st century wins it. But in terms of wealth, there is no doubt that it is Henri. Have you ever heard the term "usure"?
03:25 It is a totally banal practice today, but which was quite forbidden in the Middle Ages. Basically, usure consists of producing money with money, in other words, by practicing exorbitant interest rates.
03:36 Usure was forbidden for religious reasons in many kingdoms. But the downside is that you could not ask for a loan from any bank.
03:46 But as always, some people found a way to avoid this, so that loans existed technically.
03:53 The simplest way was to issue a binding obligation for, say, 20 shares, while the lender only got 15 shares.
04:02 And here is the job, no interest mentioned on paper, and yet the borrower got a little money and the lender his interests.
04:10 Alex would therefore have some problems with his credit card in the medieval era. And Henri would never have needed such a card, his safe was overflowing with money.
04:18 Okay, and what about other money issues? Today, we can send and receive liquidity instantly from anywhere. Thanks to the almighty Internet.
04:29 But in the Middle Ages, things were more complicated. So that a young prince could not simply send a message to his father, the king, to pay his bill at the tavern.
04:39 The first transfers of cash appeared in 1851, thanks to the invention of the telegraph and the Western Union.
04:47 As for taverns and food in general, believe us, paintings featuring these sumptuous feasts sometimes exaggerate.
04:57 Before the appearance of Photoshop and other editing programs, it was the artists themselves who embellished the painting.
05:03 Everyone seeks to appear in their best light, even food.
05:08 Let's go back to meals. If you are a spice lover, you know that it is not a big problem to find them in the nearest supermarket, and that they often do not cost much.
05:18 But in the Middle Ages, they were so expensive and difficult to import that only the nobles could afford them.
05:26 Certainly, the kings had access to a whole range of spices, but if they saw the section that we devote to them today in our supermarkets, they would think of witchcraft.
05:35 Besides, the royal court even had a special office called the spice shop. And it is not difficult to understand that it was entirely dedicated to spices.
05:43 As for the main dish, the kings of the Middle Ages generally consumed gibier, and they did not have much choice.
05:51 Let's now take a look at a menu worthy of a king. First of all, on the royal table, there was stuffed chicken, a quarter of a deer and a generously dipped quail.
06:02 Then, a huge meat pie flanked by smaller pies. All this formed a crown.
06:09 For dessert, there was jelly, cream, cheese and strawberries, crushed wood, in rose water.
06:17 It may seem very elegant, but remember that, despite everything, there were not many options.
06:21 The food depended heavily on the region where the king resided. In addition, he could not simply hang up the phone to order some sushi.
06:29 And what do you do in life? No matter what profession we exercise, in most cases, people today are free to choose their profession.
06:40 At least, we can technically consider it. But a medieval king did not have such a prerogative. He had his royal duties. New laws, perhaps.
06:50 Certainly, the king probably did not have to write them himself, but he had to approve the new ideas and put them into practice.
06:58 Protect the kingdom from enemies? Absolutely. And we suppose that this must be tiring.
07:05 Even Alex is exhausted by his work from 9 to 17. But at least he does not need to plan military strategies.
07:11 And it is not as if millions of people in the kingdom depended on him.
07:16 And let's not forget that the king was the person who should negotiate with foreign ambassadors, establish new relations and sometimes put an end to them.
07:28 All this seems like a lot of responsibility. But even if these arguments are not enough to convince you that you live much more luxuriously than a low-middle-aged king and that you would always like to be one,
07:40 here are some tips on how to make a good king. Just in case our inventors finally invent a time machine.
07:49 First, be proud and dominant. A true king must know how to display his strength and power. No one cares about your personality. You must show how powerful you are. Or at least pretend.
08:03 Second, show yourself protective. Many small people in your kingdom require your help. They would probably like to have an audience with you, and you must be attentive and maniacal.
08:16 Generosity is characteristic of a good king. At some point, you will probably feel like a kind of psycho, but to attract audiences is a royal duty.
08:26 Third, be wise in the choice of the people around you. Your royal duties are heavy, and you cannot assume them alone. You will therefore need people to whom you delegate your responsibilities.
08:41 For example, you cannot be sure that all taxes have been collected and that all disputes have been resolved fairly. But be careful, all your agents are not trustworthy.
08:51 Some may even try to poison you. Like Jean Santerre, who would have been poisoned by a monk, although the official archives claim that he is "perished from dysentery".
09:03 This version seems plausible, after all. You have seen what these kings ate. So Alex, still want to wear the crown?
