00:12seven dead people.
00:17Palestinian authorities highlighted that at least 560 Palestinian civilians, including
00:22minors, have been murdered by Israel in the occupied West Bank since October 2023.
00:31And in Mauritania, at least three people were killed in clashes between security forces
00:36and demonstrators during post-election protests.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:47My name is Belén de los Santos, I'm from the Tesoro studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51We begin with the news.
01:05Jamaica is getting ready for the impact of powerful hurricane burial, which is set to
01:10hit the country with potentially deadly winds.
01:13Prime Minister Andrew Holness asked the population to take this dangerous weather event seriously.
01:18Burial is the third hurricane to plummet the island in 40 years.
01:22The National Center informed burial is approaching with maximum sustained winds near 145 miles
01:29per hour.
01:31The passage of the storm through the eastern Caribbean has left at least seven dead and
01:36several others missing, in addition to another three on the coast of Venezuela, where its
01:41effect caused heavy rainfall, wind and storm surges.
01:46All leaders of CARICOM are being briefed on the devastating capacity of burial.
01:51Thus, Jamaica has enforced an island-wide curfew from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time to
01:57thwart major damages.
02:00CARICOM heads this morning, we were briefed on the destructive impact of the hurricane
02:08on our eastern Caribbean sister islands.
02:11We expressed our solidarity and willingness to support, even as we make our own preparations.
02:19Jamaica must take this hurricane seriously.
02:24Early this morning, the Cabinet reviewed our plans to manage the threat of the hurricane
02:31and the Caucus of Parliament was also briefed on our state of readiness and the provisions
02:38for emergency response.
02:41And as hurricane burial continues moving through the Caribbean, the extreme weather
02:45phenomenon heavily impacted the island of Barbados in the Lesser Antilles.
02:50To tell us in depth about the damages caused by the storm and the recovery efforts underway,
02:55Prime Minister Mia Motley gave Telesur collaborator Mikron Robertson an exclusive interview.
03:00Let's see.
03:01You are Telesur English in Quito, Ecuador, Prime Minister.
03:04The first question, while you are here in six months, St. Peter, how do you assess,
03:09what are your thoughts on the damage assessment?
03:11Well, we've received extensive damage to our coastal infrastructure and coastal assets.
03:16Our fishing industry has been decimated.
03:20Our coastal assets and infrastructure are completely compromised.
03:27I don't think there, I've been told that there's virtually no villa on this coast or hotel
03:32that has a beach on the West Coast.
03:34And as you know, that's what pays our bills for tourism.
03:37It is still early because we only started to move around yesterday afternoon after the
03:42all clear and hence today we're continuing.
03:45So I would say that we need probably another day or two to be able to assess fully the
03:50scale of the damage, but it is significant.
03:53Having said that, we have to give thanks and count our blessings because it could be far
03:57worse.
03:59It could have also affected us with the housing stock of the country.
04:05It didn't on this occasion, other than certainly less than a hundred houses.
04:09So the damage has been predominantly coastal, but that is very expensive, as you know, in
04:15order to build back.
04:17Final question.
04:18We've been promised an above average hurricane season here for Barbados.
04:22What does this mean for the island from your perspective?
04:24Well, we've got to keep building resilience.
04:27Regrettably, we're not where we need to be yet.
04:30And that's where you hear us calling all the time for new financing instruments for
04:34climate crisis and also for loss and damage for adaptation.
04:41And effectively, that will help us in the medium term.
04:45The loss and damage fund, if it was operational, could have helped us now, but it is not yet
04:49operational with respect to the adaptation funding that is needed to build out assets
04:55for greater resilience.
04:56But before we even get there, we have July, August, September, October, November and possibly
05:04December to go through.
05:05And therein lies the problem.
05:07So we are rebuilding even as we speak now, but with one eye on the rebuilding and one
05:14eye on the fact that we may be compromising whatever we rebuild even now.
05:18So we have to walk and chew.
05:22Thank you so much, Prime Minister.
05:26We stay on topic.
05:27On Tuesday, Hurricane Beryl downgraded to a Category 4 as it passed through the Caribbean
05:31on its way to Jamaica.
05:33But it still emerges as a dangerous threat for the area.
05:36Beryl left at least seven people dead as it passed through the open waters of the Caribbean
05:41Sea.
05:42In this sense, after the devastation in Granada, the Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell of that
05:47country reported that the death toll could rise in the island and in neighboring Carrico
05:53from which they have lost communication.
05:56On the other hand, St. Vincent and the Grenadines also reported on Monday the death of one person
06:01as a result of the hurricane, which reached Category 5 status at the time.
06:06According to the U.S., National Hurricane Center, Beryl will remain a life-threatening
06:10hurricane as it passes over Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
06:21According to information from the United States National Hurricane Center, Beryl is
06:25expected to begin to lose intensity but will remain strong as it passes over Jamaica on
06:31Wednesday, near the Cayman Islands on Thursday and near Yucatan in Mexico on Friday.
06:45In Haiti, the Hydro-Metrological Unit declared an orange and yellow alert due to the threat
06:50of Hurricane Beryl.
06:52According to the authority, the yellow alert will be in effect in three departments of
06:56the country and the orange alert in four others.
06:59In this sense, the agency detailed that the measures were adopted since this phenomenon
07:04continues its trajectory towards the southeastern Caribbean islands, which represents a possibility
07:10of rains, strong winds and tidal waves in the south and southeastern department of the
07:15country.
07:16In this context, the National Risk and Disaster Management System urged the population to
07:20follow the reports and guidance of the authorities and to avoid all coastal activities in the
07:25southern coast of the country.
07:34And Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, flew Wednesday
07:38to Union Island, one of the most devastating territories of the Caribbean nation, after
07:43the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
07:45During the flights, Gonsalves could have a general view from the air of all the affected
07:50areas, including the islands of Kamwe, Mayo and Palm Island.
07:55Let's see.
07:56Union Island, of course, is the most devastating spectacle, of course, Mairu is very bad, too.
08:25And so, too, is Kanawha and Palm Island, but Union is a field of devastation.
08:41There's only the odd building that is not severely damaged or destroyed.
08:53The roofs of all these buildings are gone.
09:02The building of the terminal of the airport, the roof is gone, and the building itself
09:08is compromised.
09:10The hospital, all the state facilities, there is a sense of shock among people, yet at the
09:20same time, a determination to rebuild.
09:24Some, of course, in the interim, many men would like to leave, and some came out today
09:36on Fast Ferry, and also on the express aircrafts that may take on persons.
09:48We want to build it back.
09:50We want to build it back better and stronger.
09:52We want to turn this terrible setback into an advance.
10:04Some people, of course, I've seen a number of people say they're not going anywhere,
10:08they're staying there.
10:09They're building it back here.
10:14Now let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS or English
10:18where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
10:22Other stories coming up, stay with us.
10:35Welcome back to From the South.
10:37On Tuesday, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, condemned the messages of hate expressed
10:42by some opponents towards Vice President Delsi Rodríguez.
10:46The head of state described as outrageous the hatred and comments directed at the executive
10:51vice president, made by the fascist of the far right, regarding the accident she suffered
10:56while carrying out an inspection in the areas affected by the climatic situation generated
11:01by Hurricane Vero across the Caribbean.
11:04The incident occurred when a tree fell on the vehicle that was transporting her and
11:08her work team.
11:09As a result, they sustained injuries, which have been treated and all are currently safe.
11:15The president warned of the dangers of fascist rhetoric, spreading to the government and
11:20denounced the hateful comments.
11:26I have to make it public because hatred outrages.
11:30The comments made by both fascists and the right fascists outrage.
11:34They outrage our people because they are serving the people in need.
11:38And where are these fascists who post these comments?
11:41What are they doing?
11:42Where are they?
11:45In other news, the virtual meeting between the delegations of the governments of Venezuela
11:49and the United States has ended.
11:51Through his ex-account, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez,
11:58commented on the rejection of the distortions that spokespersons of the U.S. government
12:03have repeatedly published about this dialogue.
12:06He also warned that Venezuela will always respond with the truth and insisted that the
12:11dialogue should be limited to what was agreed in Qatar.
12:15In order to continue recovering mutual trust and relations between governments, the principles
12:20of self-determination, sovereignty and reciprocity must be respected.
12:25After this first meeting, it was agreed the willingness of both governments to work together
12:30to build trust and improve relations and to maintain communications in a respectful and
12:35constructive manner.
12:46In other news, on Tuesday, the United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken received
12:50in Washington the Prime Minister of Haiti, Gary Conneal, to evaluate the arrival of the
12:55multinational security support mission in the Caribbean country.
12:59In this way, Conneal attended the meeting along Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominique
13:03Dupuy, while Blinken was accompanied by his staff for Latin American issues.
13:09At the meeting, Biden administration reiterated its support to the new Caribbean government
13:14despite the fact that the United Nations reported that it has received less than 25%
13:20of the budget committed to Haiti and also denounced that despite the presence of foreign
13:25troops, 20 people have been killed in the last hours by criminal groups in the country.
13:34And we have the deployment now of the multinational security support mission to help the
13:40Haitian National Police regain full control of critical parts of Port-au-Prince and the country.
13:49We think the next few weeks and months will be quite interesting, but we're confident
13:53with the establishment of the presidential council, the establishment of this new government,
13:58we're going to be able to take on these challenges straight on.
14:11Now we move on to other topics.
14:20On Wednesday, Palestinian authorities highlighted that at least 560 Palestinian civilians,
14:26including minors, have been murdered by Israel in the occupied West Bank since October 2023.
14:32In addition to these killings, more than 5,300 people have been wounded as a result of the
14:38genocide being carried out by the Israeli Occupation Army.
14:42In this context, the most recent attack killed four people in the Nour Shams refugee camp,
14:47raising the death toll to more than 37,000 in all of Palestine.
14:53Meanwhile, the War and Settlement Resistance Committee denounced settler expansion plans
14:59by the Zionist regime in both West Bank and settlements and the occupied East Jerusalem.
15:09Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Israeli occupation forces killed seven civilians while 17 more
15:14were wounded during a drone attack in the Al-Shuhaya, east of the city of Gaza.
15:20The assault occurred when a group of civilians were trying to return to the neighborhood.
15:25In this context, Palestinian authorities denounced continuous bombings against civilian targets
15:30in the area as part of the genocide the Tel Aviv regime is perpetrating against the Gaza Strip
15:36and the occupied territories, during which they have extensively destroyed Palestinian buildings and homes.

16:05Final short break. Don't go away.
16:17If Ukrainian forces dare to launch attacks along their border.
16:21The head of state reaffirmed his intention to prevent any escalation or aggravation of the conflict.
16:27But Lukashenko warned Kiev that it must stop playing with fire.
16:32In the framework of the Belarusian Independence Day, a parade is being held,
16:36which has become, according to the president, a recognition of the professionalism and dedication
16:41of the soldiers, border guards and special service agents.
16:45In this context, Lukashenko asserted that they are ready to neutralize any false flag operations
16:52attempted by Ukraine and its partners.
16:58On Tuesday, Mauritanian authorities reported that at least three people have been killed
17:03in clashes between security forces and demonstrators during post-election protests.
17:08In this way, local media reported that an unknown number of people were also injured
17:13during Monday's demonstrations, after President Mohamed Ould Ghazwani was declared
17:19the winner of the elections, precisely candidate Biram Bar Abeid,
17:24who came in second place to announce the election as a massive fraud
17:28and called for peaceful demonstrations and rallies, which he said were suppressed by the police.
17:38Meanwhile, in Kenya, protests against the economic reforms continue in several cities
17:43across the country, while police repression has left 270 people currently in custody.
17:49In this regard, the largest and most complex protest took place in Nairobi, the country's capital.
17:55In this city, the number of arrests reached 204.
17:58The so-called Z generation, who called for these protests,
18:02repudiate the economic reform proposed by the executive.
18:07According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations,
18:10the last day of demonstrations left dozens of people arrested.
18:14Many of those arrested are accused of being suspected of being involved in alleged criminal activities.
18:36And at UEFA EURO 2024, the eight teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals have been set
18:42and a new round of intriguing matches will kick off on Friday.
18:47In this way, Spain will face Germany, Portugal will take on France,
18:52while on Saturday Switzerland will meet England and the Netherlands will face on to Kiev.
18:57It should be noted that among the final top eight,
19:00the most recent winners of this event are Spain in 2008 and 2012 and Portugal in 2016.
19:08In this regard, it is worth noting the favourite Germany have not won any Euro Cup since 1996,
19:17while the Netherlands did in 1988.
19:20And finally, we note that England won its only title in distant 1966.
19:26Let's find out what some of the protagonists have to say about the clashes ahead of the semi-finals.
19:39It's a very exciting week. I think the whole journey is also very exciting for me.
19:46I think we expect a very good team with big names.
19:52So, yeah, we want to do our best and show...
19:58We are Dutch and in Holland we have to play well,
20:04we have to play offensive and to win is the most difficult way.
20:08But we know that, but I think the whole performance today was outstanding
20:15and that's what we need to have a chance to continue in this tournament.
20:22This is the level. If you go down in that level, then we don't reach the final.
20:29And like this we have come to the end of this news brief.
