00:18 In Panama, the Single National Union
00:23 of Workers in the Construction and Simulator Industries
00:26 launched a new 24-hour warning strike.
00:28 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:31 In Palestine, the genocidal siege of Gaza continues.
00:48 Authorities raised their five new
00:50 high-occupation troops in Gaza in the last 24 hours.

00:57 Hello.
00:58 Welcome to "From the South."
01:00 I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the rest of the studios
01:02 in Havana, Cuba.
01:04 We begin with the news.
01:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:08 98 and 820 injured after the earthquake
01:21 that shocked the Chinese region of Taiwan.
01:23 According to different estimates,
01:25 the magnitude was between 7.2 and 7.5,
01:28 and it was the strongest earthquake
01:29 that hit the island in at least 25 years.
01:34 The China Seismic Network Center reported
01:36 that the earthquake mainly affected
01:37 the location from Hualien.
01:39 At 7.58 AM local time on Wednesday,
01:42 images spread on social media showed the earthquake
01:44 flowed down several buildings.
01:47 And local media claimed that up to 77 people
01:50 were trapped under the buildings.
01:52 The earthquake also caused an alert tsunami
01:54 for southern Japan and the Philippines,
01:56 which was later raised.
01:57 The Central Meteorological Administration of Taiwan
02:04 reported more than 50 aftershocks
02:06 with magnitudes between 3.3 and 6.5
02:09 were recorded as the main earthquake.
02:11 In this context, local media reported
02:13 that more than 87,000 homes were left
02:16 without electrical supply due to the impact of the quake.
02:19 In turn, the earthquake caused the collapse
02:21 of several sections of road and the blockage
02:24 of the Suhua Highway, as well as the cancellation
02:27 of trains to Hualien.
02:28 Local seismologists warn of possible new earthquakes
02:31 of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 in the next three or four days.
02:35 Heavy rains in Ecuador caused landslides
02:42 in north of Quito, resulting in one person dead
02:45 and three injured.
02:46 Statements to the press made by the director of Quito,
02:48 Pavel Muñoz, indicate that the person who died
02:50 was riding a motorcycle at the time of the disaster,
02:53 and that two of the three injured
02:54 were members of the municipal security corps.
02:57 Muñoz also took stock of the situation
03:00 in the neighborhoods of La Casca and the commune of Santa
03:03 Clara de San Mayin, the most affected by a mudslide that
03:07 rushed through several streets in the area.
03:09 For this part, the Metropolitan Transit Agency
03:12 announced the closure of the main roads in the sector
03:14 due to the amount of water and mud recorded during the rain.
03:22 Due to the weather conditions you
03:24 can see that there are effects in which we summoned
03:26 all the emergency units of the Metropolitan District of Quito.
03:30 The Ecuadorian National Police is at the moment
03:32 with 125 police officers among the special operations
03:36 group dedicated to the rescue and above all the assistance
03:39 of people who require it.
03:41 Unfortunately, we have to report the death of one person
03:44 and a second one is yet to be confirmed.
03:48 The current flood was 60% less than the previous one
03:52 two years ago, but it is still a flood
03:54 that should have been foreseen by the municipal authorities.
03:57 I personally believe that the municipal authorities have
04:00 reached their level of incompetence.
04:03 I think I must be harsh because we already
04:05 have a flood in less than two years
04:07 and the authorities would have done their job, which
04:09 is what we as citizens have entrusted them with.
04:12 We gave them a mandate.
04:14 Work for the city.
04:18 In the center of Costa Rica, the activity of the Poas volcano
04:21 keeps authorities and neighbors on alert
04:22 due to the emission of gases and ashes
04:24 that fall on nearby towns.
04:26 Authorities have close access to the crater in the volcano's
04:29 national park after reports of respiratory problems
04:32 from residents of the towns of Grecia, Salchi, and Naranjo,
04:35 located some 40 kilometers north of San Jose.
04:38 The experts also explained that the wind, the little rain,
04:40 and the low humidity have favored
04:42 that the emissions of the Poas volcano
04:44 go directly to the atmosphere and are displaced
04:46 to more distant places, reaching communities
04:48 in the surroundings.
04:50 The Costa Rica Red Cross recommended
04:51 that locals not expose themselves
04:53 to a concentration of gas or ash,
04:55 protect their respiratory tract and eyes,
04:58 and if necessary, cover doors and windows
05:00 of houses with damp clothes.
05:01 The National Emergency Commission
05:07 declares green alert due to increased ash fall and gas
05:10 emission at the Poas volcano.
05:14 We don't see much change in geophysical parameters.
05:18 The gas has increased and also some differences
05:20 in gas proportions.
05:23 However, it still appears to be shallow activity
05:25 with no feed from deeper.
05:28 We will continue to monitor that because it could change quickly.
05:33 In Panama, the Singon National Union
05:35 of Workers in the Construction and Similar Industries
05:37 began a new 24-hour warning strike this Wednesday.
05:40 This new national day of action will be carried out
05:43 in protest against the closing of the bank
05:45 accounts of the organization in the state-saving bank
05:48 and the persecution of its main leaders.
05:50 Also, members of the union indicated
05:52 they will remain in the streets until the government stops
05:55 the arbitrary financial measures which
05:57 threaten the normal functioning of this organization.
06:01 In this context, the construction workers
06:03 closed several main roads in the capital city
06:05 and the province of West Panama.
06:12 In Argentina, the State Workers Association
06:14 denounced a police operation to prevent the entry of salaried
06:18 workers to agencies and ministries
06:21 as part of a protest against the dismissal of at least 11,000
06:24 people.
06:25 In this respect, the General Secretary of the ATE,
06:28 Rodolfo Aguiar, stated that the national government does not
06:31 have the budget to cover the basic needs of the Argentine
06:34 people, but it does have the budget to repress the people.
06:38 In this sense, thousands of people
06:40 arrived at their workplaces to make massive and simultaneous
06:43 entries against the layoffs in the public administration
06:45 carried out by the government of Javier Millen,
06:48 among the institutions where police operations were
06:50 deployed were the cabinet headquarters, the Labor
06:53 and Human Rights Secretariats.

07:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:14,
07:44 Welcome back.
07:45 Palestinian authorities report that in the last 24 hours,
07:48 the Israeli occupation troops committed five massacres
07:50 in the Gaza Strip.
07:51 Health sources stated that 59 people were killed
07:54 and eight were injured.
07:55 The majority of the victims are women, elderly, and children.
07:59 During the early morning on Wednesday,
08:01 Israeli bombing on houses in the city of Anjounez
08:03 took the lives of five citizens, while another three
08:06 died in their al-Qa'ila.
08:08 Since the beginning of the genocide on October 7,
08:10 Israel has killed 32,975 Palestinians
08:14 and injured more than 75,000, while thousands of bodies
08:17 remain under the debris of the devastated Gaza Strip.
08:20 The World Health Organization reported
08:28 that the destruction caused by Israel against al-Shifa Hospital
08:31 damaged the Gaza health system.
08:33 WHO stated that the Israeli seizure of the health center
08:36 led to the closure and destruction
08:37 of what it considers to be the heart of medical care
08:40 in the Gaza Strip.
08:42 The agency explained that after more than two weeks
08:44 of an Israeli attack on the health center,
08:46 al-Shifa could not provide any medical service.
08:49 The organization further reported
08:51 that since the upsurge in Israeli action against Gaza
08:54 on October 7, hundreds of health workers
08:56 have died in the line of duty.
08:58 From the UN Security Council, Russia
09:05 called on the international community
09:07 to condemn the recent airstrike by Israel
09:09 against the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which
09:11 violates the sovereignty of Syria.
09:13 The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenshiyan,
09:16 insisted that all members of the international community
09:18 should give an objective legal assessment of the Israeli
09:22 aggression in Syria, which ignores not only the provisions
09:25 of the United Nations Charter and the relevant resolutions
09:27 of the Security Council and the General Assembly,
09:30 but also the fundamental principles of the Vienna
09:32 Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations.
09:35 The ambassador also assured that the attacks
09:37 on diplomatic institutions are unacceptable,
09:40 and if not condemned, next time airstrikes
09:42 may hit the diplomatic mission of any state.
09:44 Madam President, the Russian Federation strongly condemns
09:51 the ongoing incursions into the sovereign territory of Syria
09:55 and considers them a flagrant violation of the sovereignty
09:57 and territorial integrity of that state.
10:00 We are of the opinion that these aggressive actions
10:03 on the part of Israel are designed
10:04 to further fuel the conflict.
10:07 They are absolutely unacceptable and must be stopped.
10:11 For her part, a representative of Iran to the United Nations
10:14 affirmed that the continuous attacks by the Israeli regime
10:17 are a constant threat to peace in the Middle East.
10:21 Now crystal clear that Israel's current destabilizing
10:24 and irresponsible actions and atrocities against the nations
10:28 of our region are a real threat to regional and international
10:32 peace and security.
10:35 In Israel, anti-government protesters
10:37 gather in front of Parliament in Jerusalem
10:39 to demand a removal from the office of Benjamin Netanyahu
10:42 and an agreement for the release of hostages in Gaza.
10:46 Carrying torches and posters, thousands of demonstrators
10:49 march from the Neset to the prime minister's residence
10:52 on Tuesday, calling for new elections in the country.
10:55 Local media reported that there were clashes between police
10:58 officers and demonstrators, some of whom were arrested.
11:01 The protest is mainly made up of relatives and friends
11:04 of people who are currently detained in the Gaza Strip.
11:06 The hostages are the first target,
11:15 and that will be victory.
11:17 We tell the government that all this useless,
11:19 improductive talk and tone about a total victory are nonsense.
11:22 There will be no total victory.
11:25 The only victory we can have is the victory of the spirit,
11:28 that we remain a human and democratic country.
11:31 We don't want revenge.
11:32 We don't want to kill Palestinians.
11:34 We don't want hunger in Gaza.
11:36 We want a ceasefire that will bring the hostages.
11:39 We want the re-establishment of the state of Israel.
11:44 In Turkey, authorities arrested nine people
11:46 after a daytime fire at the central Istanbul nightclub
11:48 that claimed the lives of 29 people.
11:51 The establishment, located on the first floor
11:54 of a residential building in the Sicily district of Istanbul,
11:56 was being renovated at the time of the fire.
11:59 Nine people, including the nightclub manager
12:01 and a person responsible for the renovations,
12:03 have had warrants out for their arrest
12:05 in connection with the fire, as investigations continue.
12:08 In this regard, a Turkish minister of the interior,
12:10 Ali Yerlikaya, indicated that an investigation of the facts
12:14 was underway.

12:37 Welcome back from the south.
12:58 Uganda's constitutional court on Wednesday
13:00 refused to annul or suspend an anti-homosexuality law that
13:03 includes a death penalty for certain same-sex acts,
13:06 but voided some provisions it said
13:08 are inconsistent with certain fundamental human rights.
13:12 The legislation adopted in May last year
13:14 is among the world's harshest anti-LGBTQ laws,
13:17 and has drawn condemnation from rights campaigners
13:20 and sanctions from Western nations.
13:22 Activists say the law has unleashed a torrent of abuse
13:24 against LGBTQ people, including torture, rape, arrest,
13:28 and eviction.
13:29 In his reading and on behalf of the jury,
13:31 Judge Richard Buteira declined to strike down
13:34 the anti-homosexuality law 2023 in its entirety,
13:37 saying that a permanent injunction against its
13:39 enforcement would not be granted.
13:41 However, the court struck down certain sections
13:43 that were considered inconsistent with right
13:45 to health, privacy, and freedom of religion.
13:48 The petitioners sought a myriad of remedies
13:57 that essentially call for the notification
13:59 of the entire anti-homosexuality act 2023.
14:05 Having heard as we have in the body of the judgment,
14:09 we decline to nullify the anti-homosexuality act 2023
14:15 in its entirety.
14:17 Neither would we grant a permanent injunction
14:21 against its enforcement.
14:24 Ugandan lawyer Nicholas Obhijo emphasized
14:27 that the court was based on the moral values of the society,
14:29 but at the same time, by its decisions,
14:31 supported discrimination of LGBTQ people in the country.
14:35 Substantially upheld the vast majority
14:39 of the sections of the anti-homosexuality act
14:42 in Uganda.
14:43 The court said the act does not provide for discrimination,
14:46 doesn't offend the freedom of expression,
14:49 doesn't offend the freedom of privacy,
14:52 and does not restrict the right to religion,
14:55 practices one's faith.
14:57 The court essentially said that the law is justified insofar
15:02 as it discriminates against LGBTI people,
15:05 as far as it denies them a right to participate
15:07 in the governance of this country.
15:09 They said those restrictions are proportional.
15:12 And in doing so, the court relied on public sentiments.
15:17 The court relied on what it calls
15:19 moral values of this society.
15:23 And the court, by its decision, simply
15:27 endorsed the discrimination of LGBTI individuals
15:30 in this country.
15:31 In Senegal, the newly elected president of the Republic,
15:36 Basir Odioma Efeye, appointed Ousmane Sonko
15:39 as the country's prime minister.
15:41 Sonko thanked the Senegalese people
15:42 for their support of his political formation project,
15:45 and announced that his government proposal will
15:47 be presented in the next few days.
15:49 Sonko's figure had been excluded from the presidential elections,
15:52 which was considered an attempt by the Gouden
15:54 government, led by Mac Essal, to silence opposition voices.
15:57 Senegal's new government seeks to bring
15:59 about a systemic change in order for the country
16:03 to regain its sovereignty, as well as
16:05 to turn the page on several months of instability
16:07 and uncertainty after Essal postponed
16:09 the presidential elections.
16:10 The International Organization for Migration, IOM,
16:19 denounced new acts of vandalism and violence
16:23 by parliamentary groups in Sudan.
16:25 The international body reported that at least 21 people
16:28 were killed during the actions that took place over the weekend,
16:30 leaving dozens of people wounded.
16:32 A detail that clashes that took place in the city of El Fasher
16:35 and in the north of Darfur sparked the displacement
16:39 of its inhabitants.
16:40 The organization also reported that the Sudanese army forces
16:44 prevented a bombardment against their positions
16:46 in the area of Al-Huahua, belonging
16:49 to the city of Al-Dawin in the state of White Nile.
16:51 North Korea carried out the successful test
16:59 of a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile.
17:02 The North Korean state agency, KCNA,
17:05 explained that leader Kim Jong-un supervised
17:07 the test of the Hwa Son-4 16B solid-fueled missile,
17:11 equipped with an advanced hypersonic warhead, which
17:14 flew 1,000 kilometers.
17:15 The purpose of the test was to verify the general design
17:18 and technical characteristics of the new missile,
17:20 as well as to test the weapon system.
17:23 This trial became the North Korea's third ballistic missile
17:25 test this year.
17:26 We now move on to the world of sports.
17:36 The Chilean shooter Diego Parra becomes the 19th classified
17:40 for his country in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
17:44 At only 16 years old, the athlete
17:45 achieved an extraordinary Olympic qualification
17:48 to Paris 2024, after being crowned champion in the 10-meter
17:51 air pistol in the Pan-American shooting
17:53 qualifier in Buenos Aires.
17:55 Parra achieved 244.2 points to eliminate his rivals,
17:59 all medalists in the Pan-American Games of Santiago
18:02 2023, also beating the Brazilian Olympic medalist
18:05 Felipe Almeida Wu, silver, in Rio 2016.
18:09 In this way, the young Chilean achieved the only available
18:12 space heading to Paris 2024, being
18:14 the 19th classified of his country
18:16 and the youngest until now.
18:17 And the Mexican women's team won a gold prize
18:26 in the American sports shooting championship in Argentina.
18:30 The national sports shooting selected teams
18:32 Alejandra Zavala Vazquez, Andrea Ibarra Miranda,
18:35 and Alejandra Cervantes Rodriguez
18:37 achieved the gold medal in the women's team 10-meter air
18:40 pistol test during the start of the 14th American rifle
18:44 and pistol championships that takes place
18:46 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
18:48 The three-color group lead the competition
18:51 with a score of 1697-37X above the Ecuador team made up
18:56 of Diana Durango, Andrea Perez, and Sofia Padilla,
19:00 who added 1697-36X while the Canadians obtained
19:04 the mark of 1667-22X and took the bronze.
19:08 It should be noted that it will be this Wednesday, April 3,
19:12 when the national selected teams return to the shooting range
19:14 to competition in the mixed team modality.
