This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 08/07/2024. The jet stream has shifted south and that means more wet and cool weather this week, but there’s some hints at something a little drier at the end of the week. Bringing you this weekend’s weather forecast is Alex Deakin.

00:00Welcome to your week ahead weather forecasts from the Met Office. A week
00:04that takes us pretty much to the middle of summer and yet at times will again
00:08feel more like the middle of autumn. The reason why? Low pressure. This one moving
00:13up across the country through the first half of the week bringing cloud and
00:16outbreaks of rain. What's creating that swell? The bigger picture shows why. The
00:20jet stream, that fast-moving river of air high up in the atmosphere, has drifted
00:25south again and it's this which will generate and push along areas of low
00:31pressure. A south shifted jet means that we are on the cool side and this
00:36weather front in particular will bring some persistent and heavy rain across
00:40parts of northern Scotland. Another low threatens the south later this week but
00:45actually towards the end of the week higher pressure is likely to topple in
00:50and that should at least bring something a bit drier and brighter as we head
00:53towards the weekend. But that's a few days away. We've got to get through some
00:57wetter weather in the shorter term created as I said by this area of low
01:02pressure and this tangle of weather fronts drifting northwards. A soggy start
01:05to the day over the Midlands, North Wales, much of northern England on Tuesday. That
01:10rain quickly spreading into parts of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland.
01:13The far northwest of Scotland having a decent day, dry and bright with some
01:17spirals of sunshine, maybe the odd shower. It turns drier through the morning across
01:21the Midlands drying up a little over northern England and North Wales. The far
01:25south was fairly cloudy with some showers. Threat of some heavier downpours
01:30that may clip the far southeast or parts of East Anglia later on. But the wettest
01:35weather definitely in this zone with the breeze coming in from the North Sea with
01:39the cloud and the rain. Well it's not going to feel very pleasant here.
01:42Temperatures struggling 15-16 degrees at best, even cooler along the coast. Then we
01:47have a warmer zone. If it brightens up over the Midlands, parts of northern
01:51England, it'll probably feel really quite humid. That may trigger some late
01:56thundery showers as temperatures get up to 21-22 maybe even 23 degrees Celsius.
02:01But for many with the cloud and the outbreaks of rain it will stay cool. This
02:05map is showing the rainfall building up. Three-hour rainfall accumulations from
02:11Monday evening. The heaviest rain through Monday night across parts of South Devon
02:16and Cornwall. But some heavy rain generally then spreading into the
02:19Midlands and Wales. Drifting northwards into Tuesday morning and then kind of
02:24lingering across Northern Ireland. The rain is going to be set in here for much
02:27of the day and particularly late on that Tuesday night and into Wednesday. The
02:33rain starting to build up over northern Scotland, especially the northeast. So we
02:37do have a Met Office yellow warning in place here. There could be some local
02:41flooding as that rain as I say builds up through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
02:45Not really shifting. Some heavy downpours mixed in with the more
02:48persistent rain here. It will turn pretty soggy across Northern Ireland through
02:53Tuesday and the rain lasts here into Wednesday as well with the breeze coming
02:56in from the north. Further showers on Wednesday across northern England
02:59particularly to the west of the Pennines. But further east and further south well
03:03Wednesday may generally be a dry and a bright day with some decent spouts of
03:07sunshine that could see temperatures getting up to 22 maybe 23 degrees
03:10Celsius. Again with a more persistent rain and the breeze coming in from the
03:15north it's going to be a cool day across northern Scotland. So a very different
03:19day over the Highlands on Wednesday compared to Tuesday. Then by the time we
03:23get to Thursday the low that's bringing all the wet weather in the shorter term
03:27is starting at least to pull away and eyes out west. This scrap between a low
03:32pressure trying to come up from the southwest and high pressure trying to
03:36come in from the northwest. The original low though is still going to bring some
03:40outbreaks of rain across parts of Scotland. It won't be as heavy by this stage and it
03:44will start to shift further south. The threat of some showery rain in the south
03:48but I suspect that low pressure isn't going to make much progress and actually
03:52much of the south should again be dry and bright on Thursday. A much brighter day
03:56over northern Scotland but with the winds coming in from the north again
03:59that's not going to be very warm. 13-14 at best and stuck under this cloudier zone
04:03with rain on and off again. Temperatures could really struggle during Thursday. By
04:08the time we get to Friday that high pressure should be toppling in. Still
04:13the threat of this low to the south but it's getting squeezed away at this stage.
04:17Something we need to keep an eye on for sure but I'm more optimistic that that
04:21high pressure will start to build in. So yes still quite a lot of cloud around
04:25initially and there will still be some showers particularly in the south through
04:28the afternoon. But I suspect many places looking dry on Friday with a bit of
04:33sunshine we could get into the high teens maybe low 20s. But for many
04:38still the air is coming in from the north so it is going to stay on the cool
04:41side and that is how we go into the weekend. But again I'm hopeful the high
04:45pressure will edge in a little bit more bringing many of us a lot of dry weather
04:48this weekend. Should be a bit more sunshine as well but the winds go around
04:52high pressure like this so we are going to be on the cool side still with a
04:56breeze coming in from the north. So no sign of any heat but optimistic that at
05:00least the weekend looks a little drier and a little brighter. Of course with any
05:03sunshine in the middle of summer it will still feel quite warm. Do keep up
05:07to date as we go through this week. Best way to do that for watching on YouTube
