00:00A recent study found that when it comes to six-figure careers, job postings for remote
00:06work down 33 percent, hybrid postings down 40 percent.
00:10So what does that say about remote work?
00:14What I will say is remote work and remote opportunities are down.
00:19Most people actually want a hybrid option, though.
00:23And so while there are fewer opportunities for remote work, we are seeing more people
00:28are starting to have the conversation about what does hybrid look like and how can I have
00:31a great career in a hybrid environment.
00:35The number one thing I would say is that you don't know what's negotiable until you start
00:40negotiating.
00:41So while some opportunities may be fully in the office, some may be hybrid, there may
00:46be an opportunity to potentially negotiate for what it is that you want to do.
00:51But I will say, though, if you're going to say, I'm committed to having an all fully
00:55remote career, you need to also be really committed to the fact that the strategy for
01:00your career development may be different from somebody who's in the office every day, who's
01:06meeting up with people sort of serendipitously, who's building relationships in a much easier
01:11environment than someone who's working at a company headquartered in Albuquerque and
01:18they're living in Seattle.
01:22So you have to think about why you want that remote work and what do you want from your
01:29career and then match it up with a strategy.
01:32And you can't just let your career happen to you.
01:35You've got to really have a strong strategy.
01:38Are you kind of saying like it's not that so much remote work and hybrid work is going
01:42away.
01:43It's not that they're putting it in the posting once you get the job or you get the interview,
01:48you can negotiate whether that's what you want.
01:51I will say that remote work is down, absolutely.
01:56But what I will say about the you don't know what's negotiable until you start to negotiate
02:01is that you still have the option to ask or even think about long term.
02:07Do I say, OK, if I do a really great job at this hybrid, is there potential for me to
02:13be fully remote?
02:14Or if I do a great job at this in the office every day, is there potential for me to move
02:18to hybrid?
02:19But I think that what we're going to see is that hybrid is really here to stay remote
02:25for certain types of work is probably going to is probably going to continue to decline.
02:31But the opportunities are still there.
02:35Just got to go after them and sort of be really intentional about how you start to look for
02:40those jobs and talk about your skills in that.
02:42So do you have any tips on how to negotiate when the job posting doesn't necessarily say
02:49that it's going to be hybrid or remote?
02:51I think what number one, you should be negotiating, you should be building your skills to negotiate
02:56all the time.
02:57Right.
02:58Because you're going to always going to be things that you're negotiating at work.
03:02The thing about trying to negotiate for hybrid or remote work, most people are pretty clear
03:06about what it is in the job postings.
03:08There are probably only a handful of cases where you can actually say, I could be really
03:14good at this.
03:15Here's why I could be really good at this in a hybrid or in a remote environment.
03:19I think my skills are so are so good that it would be worthwhile for you to consider
03:26allowing me to do this in the way that I would like to do it.
03:29So I think that the number one thing is like, you got to be able to read the room, right,
03:33in terms of talking to that recruiter about what the options are.
03:36You also can start to look at building your negotiation skills by taking a learning course
03:41or reading up on how to better negotiate, not just negotiating for benefits, but how
03:47do you negotiate for salary or a job change or allowing somebody to let you take a leap
03:56of faith type of stretch assignment.
03:59We should all be thinking about how we negotiate, whether it's talking about work balance or
04:05talking about compensation, should all kind of start building those skills because oftentimes
04:10you have not because you ask not.
