Oxnard position group analysis: Tight ends

We're counting down to the start of Cowboys training camp by going through each position group on the team. Today Shan & RJ look at the tight ends, where you have a clear cut #1 option in Jake Ferguson and a muddled collection of players who could be the backup or who could be on the chopping block.

00:00Let's talk about the tight end position a spot where I think we've there was obviously
00:21the discussion about Dalton Schultz and what exactly was he worth and what exactly could
00:27you find in terms of how easily could it be to find a replacement somebody who can click
00:31into place.
00:32Jake Ferguson has been a, I don't want to say a revelation, but I mean, Jake Ferguson,
00:37I think his is really starting to come into his own as one of the game's better tight
00:43ends.
00:44He was actually a spoiler alert here.
00:46There were a lot of Cowboys fans recently who were upset because that ESPN top 10 position
00:51list that Jake Ferguson was not in there.
00:53Jake Ferguson did not get a top 10 pick Dalton Schultz did.
00:57And there are some people who just thought, ah, Ferguson's better at this point.
01:00Ferguson had really surprised the Cowboys when they picked him.
01:04If you talk to people in the organization, they'll tell you that we liked him, but we
01:10picked him where we did because we needed a tight end and we didn't think another one
01:15was going to make it to us at the next pick.
01:17And so they liked him, but it was a little bit like, all right, here's a pick out of
01:21that kind of necessity.
01:22And maybe we're leaving some guys on the board that we think are better or guys that we like
01:25a little bit more because we got to get this position now, because it's going to be barren
01:29after we get past this run.
01:32And Ferguson came in and immediately impressed them with the game field athleticism.
01:38So timing, testing, things like that.
01:40That wasn't anything that really popped when you would look at his testing numbers.
01:44There wasn't anything that said he was a super athlete, but in the games he plays as a better
01:50play speed athlete than he does as a testing athlete.
01:53So Ferguson doing what he's done has kind of set up the rest of this tight end room
01:59for them to kind of pick and choose and be a little more deliberate with the way that
02:02they want to set things up here on the roster.
02:04Currently, I think they like this group a lot.
