The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) upgraded typhoon “Carina” (international name “Gaemi”) to a super typhoon on Wednesday afternoon, July 24.

Carina is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph, up from 165 kph maximum winds and 205 kph wind gusts recorded six hours ago.

00:00Karina has intensified and is now in the Super Typhoon category.
00:07She is now in the Northern Taiwan area.
00:11Earlier at 4 p.m., her center is located 380 kilometers away from Itbayat, Batanes.
00:19Strong winds are blowing at 185 kilometers per hour near the center.
00:24The storm reaches 230 kilometers per hour.
00:28It is moving in the direction of the northwest at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
00:35This is Karina's track.
00:38We can see that Karina has reached her peak intensity as Super Typhoon
00:44and it is possible for her to landfall in the northern part of the Taiwan area.
00:50It is possible for Karina to landfall in the Taiwan area and become a Typhoon category
00:58and it is possible for her to landfall by tomorrow morning in the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
01:05Because of Karina, the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 is still high in the Batanes area,
01:12while the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is in the Babayan Islands,
01:15in the northern portion of the mainland of Cagayan, and in the northern portion of Ilocos Norte.
01:22And also, even though Karina is far from us in Metro Manila,
01:28it is being affected by the Southwest Monsoon or heavy rain.
01:31That is why we have a heavy rainfall warning.
01:34This is released by our National Capital Region, PRSD.
01:38As of 5 p.m., we have a red rainfall warning in Metro Manila, Rizal, Bataan, Zambales, Bulacan, and Pampanga.
01:46While orange warning in Terlac, and yellow heavy rainfall warning in Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, and portions of the Quezon area.
01:59What do we expect?
02:01For the heavy rainfall that Karina will experience,
02:04we expect 50 to 100 mm of heavy rainfall in the Batanes and Babayan Islands.
02:09So, like what we mentioned earlier,
02:12the Southwest Monsoon or heavy rain will enhance or change Karina.
02:17That is why we expect moderate to intense rains for today.
02:22100 to 200 mm of rain in Metro Manila,
02:25Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Terlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, and in Occidental Mindoro.
02:3350 to 100 mm of rain for today,
02:36in Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Ecija, and in the parts of Calabarzon.
02:42For tomorrow, we expect 100 to 200 mm of rain in Benguet and Abra,
02:49and 50 to 100 mm of rain in Metro Manila, Cavite, Batanes, Babayan Islands,
02:54and in the parts of Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and in Occidental Mindoro.
03:01On Friday, we expect 50 to 100 mm of rain in Zambales, Bataan, and in Benguet.
03:08So, for those who live in elevated or mountainous areas,
03:13the forecast rainfall in that area may be higher.
03:16And be careful, our countrymen who live in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas,
03:22because of the risks of flooding or landslides,
03:26especially in the rains of the past few days because the land is saturated in those areas.
03:32In strong winds, like what we mentioned earlier,
03:38Southwest Monsoon or Habagat is getting stronger.
03:42So, it's possible that the strong winds for today,
03:48Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Eastern Portion of Isabela,
03:53Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula,
04:00Northern Mindanao, Barm, and Davao Region.
04:03For tomorrow, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya,
04:09Quirino, Eastern Portion of Isabela, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon,
04:14Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Negros Occidental, and Northern Samar.
04:21For tomorrow, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya,
04:28Quirino, Eastern Portion of Isabela, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa,
04:33Bicol Region, and Western Visayas.
04:36That's the cost of Enhanced Southwest Monsoon.
04:40We also have a Gale Warning here in Batanes, Northern Coast of Cagayan,
04:46including Ambabuyan Islands, and Northern Coast of Ilocos Norte.
04:50So, it's dangerous to go there, especially for the small sea vehicles.
04:55And also, in our region, in our neighborhoods,
04:59the sea remains calm until the sea waves rise.
05:03That's why we need to be careful even if there's no Gale Warning in your area.
