00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn addition of four-digit numbers. So let's get started.
00:10Mr. Joe owns a mall. He recorded the number of people visiting his mall in
00:16past five months in morning and evening. Now let's find out answers to a few
00:24questions based on what Mr. Joe recorded. How many people visited Mr. Joe's mall
00:30in the month of January? We are asked to find out the total number of people so
00:38we have to add the number of people visited the mall in morning as well as
00:43evening. We see 4,560 people visited the mall in the morning and 6,780 people
00:56visited the mall in evening. So let's add both. Adding 0 plus 0 equals 0. So write
01:080 in the sum below ones place. Adding 6 plus 8 we get 14. So write the ones place
01:19digit that is 4 in sum at tens place and carry over 1 to the hundreds place.
01:28Adding 1 plus 5 plus 7 we get 13. So write the ones place digit that is 3 in
01:39the sum at tens place and carry over 1 to the thousands place. 1 plus 4 plus 6
01:49we get 11. Now we don't have to carry over any digit so write 11 in the sum. We
01:59get 11,340. So the answer to the question is 11,340 people visited the mall in
02:11month of January. Now let's answer another question. How many people visited
02:20Mr. Joe's mall from January to March? So here we have to find the total number of
02:28people visited the mall from January to March. First we will be calculating
02:35number of people visited the mall in each month that is January, February and
02:42March and then we will add them up to get the total number of people that
02:48visited the mall from January to March. People visited the mall in January. We
02:58already calculated it in our previous question. It's 11,340 people. People
03:07visited the mall in February. For this we will add up the people visited in morning
03:14and evening. Adding 5 plus 0 equals 5. So write 5 in the sum below ones place.
03:24Adding 8 plus 0 we get 8. So write 8 in the sum below ones place. Adding 7 plus 0
03:38equals 7. We get 7. So write 7 in the sum at hundreds place. Adding 6 plus 8 equals
03:5114. As they are the last digits we are adding so we don't have to carry over
03:57any digit. So write 14 in the sum. We get 14,785. 14,785 people visited the mall in
04:13month of February. People visited the mall in March. For this we will add up
04:20the people visited in morning and evening. Adding 1 plus 0 we get 1. So
04:29write 1 in the sum below ones place. Adding 5 plus 8 equals 13. So write the
04:39ones place digit that is 3 in the sum at tens place and carry over 1 to
04:46hundreds place. Adding 1 plus 4 plus 8 equals 13. We get 13 again. So write the
04:57ones place digit that is 3 at hundreds place and carry over 1 to the thousands
05:05place. Adding 1 plus 3 plus 6 equals 10. We get 10. Now we don't have to carry over
05:17anything to the next place. So write 10 in the sum. We get 10,331. 10,331
05:30visited the mall in month of March. Now we have all the figures. January 11,340
05:42people. February 14,785 people. March 10,331 people. Now we will add them up to
05:59get the total number of people that visited the mall from January to March.
06:05Adding 0 plus 5 plus 1 equals 6. So write 6 in the sum at ones place. Adding 4 plus 8
06:18plus 3 equals 15. Write ones place number that is 5 at tens place in sum and
06:27carry over 1 to hundreds place. Adding 1 plus 3 plus 7 plus 3 equals 14. Write 4
06:40in the sum at hundreds place and carry over 1 to thousands place. Adding 1 plus
06:481 plus 4 plus 0 equals 6. 1 plus 1 plus 1 equals 3. We get 36,456. Putting commas we
07:06get 36,456 people visited the mall from January to March. So kids, you know how to add big numbers
07:19like four or five digit numbers. Now let's answer a few more questions quickly. Here we will add up
07:31adding 9 and 0 we get 9. Write in the sum at ones place. Adding 6 and 0 we get 6. Write 6 in sum at
07:48tens place. Adding 5 and 0 we get 5. Write 5 at hundreds place. Adding 2 and 7 we get 9. Write 9
08:02at thousands place. We get 9,569. Add commas to the number. 9,569 people visited the mall in April.
08:19How many people visited the mall in February and April? For this we will add the number of people
08:27we calculated from February and April. February, 14,785. April, 9,569. Adding 5 and 9 we get 14.
08:47Write 4 at ones place in sum. Carry over 1 to tens place. Adding 1 plus 8 plus 6 we get 15.
09:02Write 5 at tens place in sum and carry over 1 to hundreds place.
09:09Adding 1 plus 7 plus 5 equals 13. Write 3 at hundreds place in sum and carry over 1 to thousands place.
09:24Adding 1 plus 4 plus 9 we get 14. Write 4 in sum at thousands place and carry over 1 to tens place.
09:37Adding 1 and 1 we get 2. We got 24,345 people visited the mall in February and April.
09:50So kids, now you have a fair idea how to do the addition sums with big numbers. Practice more and
09:58more to be perfect. Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more. Bye-bye!
