PNP-ACG operatives nab 9 'vishing' scam suspects in Cavite

00:11Fortunately, to would-be victims,
00:13law enforcers were able to nab nine suspects involved in such schemes in Cavite.

00:26A typhoon did not deter the operatives of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group
00:31from arresting nine suspects in General Trias Cavite Wednesday night.
00:36These individuals were allegedly involved in a voice phishing or phishing scam.
00:42Their modus operandi was to call potential victims
00:47and pretend to be bank representatives to obtain money.
00:50The surveillance and case build-up for the suspects allegedly took eight months.
01:06The operation revealed various cell phones,
01:08hundreds of SIM cards and bank documents,
01:11including credit card account records,
01:14Credit card holders were often targeted.
01:17Through phishing, the suspects convinced the victims
01:20to give them the one-time password or OTP from their banks.
01:25This way, they were able to obtain millions of pesos.
01:45Voice phishing is a manipulation.
01:48The PNP-ACG urged banks to conduct their own investigations
01:52with focus on the angle of an inside job conspiracy
01:56that paved the way for the suspects in obtaining client information.
02:14The suspects will be charged with violation of the Access Devices Regulation Act,
02:34computer-related fraud,
02:35and they are also considering charging them with economic sabotage.
02:40According to the PNP-ACG,
02:42there have been almost 100 phishing complaints
02:46and thus the public is advised to be cautious.
