00:00A senator has hit out at a group of eight scholars for sending an email to senators
00:07in hopes of lobbying them to oppose the Medical Act 1971 amendment bill.
00:12The group had questioned Putrajaya's decision to recognize parallel pathway program specialists,
00:18according to Senator Dr. R. A. Lingeshwaran.
00:21Lingeshwaran said the group's sole contention was that only training hospitals run by the
00:25higher education ministry should be recognized as training centers.
00:30The former Sungai Bakap Hospital director said he was unsure of the group's motive
00:34in opposing a bill that aims to close the gap in recognizing cardiothoracic surgeons
00:39who are in short supply in public hospitals.
00:42He pointed out that two of these scholars hold a specialist certificate from the Royal
00:45College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, institutions
00:51they had questioned in their emails.
00:53The bill, which will recognize all specialists who obtain their qualifications via the parallel
00:58pathway program, was later approved by the Senate.
01:01It will also empower the Health Minister and Malaysian Medical Council to recognize specialists
01:06to be listed in the National Specialist Register.
