00:00Stealing a police car is one of the riskiest things you can attempt,
00:04with any wrong move resulting in certain jail time.
00:07So what does it look like when stealing a cop car goes horribly wrong?
00:14Today we cover exclusive body cam footage of the few times this has happened.
00:18Starting with the case of a man named Mr. Sanchez in Colorado.
00:22Police say he had been purposefully causing accidents
00:25and crashing into multiple other vehicles in the area.
00:27So they gathered a team of officers and tried to take him down.
00:44Using a technique called the pit maneuver, or the precision immobilization technique,
00:49the cops are able to spin Sanchez's vehicle around and completely stop him in his tracks.
00:54Then they rush in to arrest him.
00:56But this is far from where the story ends.
01:14Sanchez frankly looks scared and confused,
01:16and even claims he's got no idea what's going on or what he did wrong.
01:20But that might at least explain what he does next.
01:23After being placed in the back of the patrol vehicle,
01:25he manages to bring his handcuffed arms under his legs so that they're in front of him,
01:29and proceeds to do this.
01:47Sanchez jumps into the front of the patrol vehicle and simply drives away.
01:51For some reason, the car didn't have a partition between the front and the back,
01:55and evidently had the keys ready in the ignition.
01:58And what's worse, the police had left a service rifle on the passenger seat of his new ride,
02:03so he was now speeding away, armed in a stolen vehicle.
02:25The police immediately set their focus to stopping the vehicle.
02:34The longer he's driving like this, the more danger he's putting civilians in.
02:38He's currently driving over 120 miles an hour down public roads at 11 a.m.
02:43If this is allowed to continue any longer, many lives will be put at risk.
02:47So the cops aim to put stop tricks, or stingers, in place.
02:51Strips of spikes that puncture the tires and stop the vehicle in its tracks.
02:55The only issue is that Sanchez is a better driver than they realized.
03:14Sanchez was able to avoid the stop sticks not once, but twice,
03:18and continues to speed down the freeway at increasingly dangerous speeds.
03:22However, the cops know exactly where he's going, and if they keep at it, this method will eventually work.
03:27What they seem to forget, though, is that taking out a car's tires at 120 miles an hour
03:32is an incredibly dangerous feat in its own right.
03:49Sanchez crashed into a parked semi-truck at over 100 miles an hour,
03:53and after being removed from the wreck and taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
03:57Luckily, the semi-truck driver sustained no injuries, and nobody else was hurt in pursuit.
04:02But it did come close.
04:04This pursuit was allowed to go on for much longer than it should have been,
04:07but it's a shame that Sanchez didn't make it to the hospital in time.
04:12On March 30, 2018, a woman named Angie was driving a car that had been reported stolen,
04:18and when she was pulled over and questioned about it, she had this to say.
04:21On March 30, 2018, a woman named Angie was driving a car that had been reported stolen,
04:27and when she was pulled over and questioned about it, she had this to say.
04:52No, he bought it.
04:54If he did steal it, then I'm gonna have to go to jail and pay the price for it.
04:58The police know this car was stolen because it flagged up on their system.
05:02They know without a doubt that somebody had reported it as missing,
05:05but they didn't know exactly who took it.
05:07This is why they have to assume it's Angie.
05:10She was the one driving it at the time, and claims the previous owner bought it straight from the dealership.
05:14And given that she has a track record, it's safe to assume she's lying about something.
05:19All right, well, she even took the vehicle without permission, okay?
05:23It was reported as stolen, okay?
05:27So, you're in possession of it.
05:31Not to mention, your driving status is flagged.
05:34You're not even supposed to be driving, so you're going to jail.
05:37Please, do whatever you think I can do. I worked with them. Please.
05:40I worked with them on 11th and Garnett, with murders and the whole prostitution thing.
05:49The secret service with the counterfeiting.
05:51Please, I told this officer where you can get paper tags and all that stuff.
05:56I will work with you guys. I didn't know it was stolen.
06:01Angie then tells the officers that she's in regular contact with the captain at another police department
06:06working as an informant, and could even give them information on local drug dealers.
06:10But obviously, that doesn't excuse her of what she's doing here.
06:14So, they decide to sit her down in a patrol vehicle while they continue the investigation.
06:18But for some reason, they decide to put her in the front passenger seat of a running police car.
06:23Something that a car thief would realize instantly.
06:27And I don't feel like spending the rest of my shift trying,
06:29because I think this is all going to blow, be a bunch of BS anyway.
06:33Well, what is she doing?
06:36She's trying to steal your car.
06:38Stop! Stop!
06:41David 136, suspect just stole my vehicle.
06:45He was heading southbound on Memorial from 33rd.
06:49Angie simply shifts over to the driver's seat, locks the door, and speeds away without a moment's notice.
06:55Luckily, it's around 1am, so there's very little traffic on the road.
06:58But nevertheless, the speeds of up to 90 miles an hour Angie is finding herself at
07:02are still extremely dangerous in such a residential area.
07:06So, the cops need to shut this down immediately.
07:11David 104, still on Memorial.
07:15Oh God, there's another cop!
07:17Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!
07:27David 104, still on Memorial.
07:29Oh God, oh God, oh God!
07:31Shit! Fuck!
07:33Oh no!
07:35Oh no!
07:38Clearly terrified of the situation she's found herself in, Angie turns off the main road
07:43and onto a smaller side road.
07:45And this turns out to be her downfall.
07:54Angie, slow down right now!
07:57Cornered, Angie realizes her only option is to bail from the vehicle and sprint away.
08:02But the cops are trained for situations just like this.
08:05And she'll have a hard time staying out of their grasp for long.
08:08Especially while she's handcuffed.
08:11Is that her right there?
08:13There she is.
08:20Come here now!
08:24Ow! Ow! Ow!
08:27Get on the ground!
08:29Ow! Ow!
08:31Hang on, Angie.
08:33Put your hands over your head.
08:35Put your hands over your head.
08:43Oh, please!
08:45If it's an adrenaline rush Angie was after, she sure got it.
08:48But that also comes coupled with a considerably larger sentence than she was originally facing.
08:52And the cops make sure to let her know how bad of an idea that really was.
08:57I've seen some stupid stuff, but my gosh.
09:01Angie hit a car with it.
09:03You guys told me that I was going to jail for something that I did not do.
09:08You just stole a police car.
09:10Now I'm going to jail for something I did.
09:12Well, there we go. Silver linings.
09:15At least she was right about the prison part.
09:17As after a fairly short trial where she pleaded guilty, Angie was sentenced to three years behind bars.
09:22Both of these cases so far involved a criminal making a last ditch effort to set themselves free.
09:28And that happens when instead of the thief, it's just someone looking for a good time.
09:32Our joyrider in this case is a woman named Destiny.
09:35And she wasn't even involved with the original call.
09:38A single officer was called to the side of the road on a civil dispute involving a taxi driver allegedly stealing a customer's property.
09:45But out of nowhere, the cop is alerted to something strange that was happening to his car.
09:50Once you find out who it is, and go through that.
09:54Katie, you got in your car.
09:57What?
10:00604, a girl just got in 604 and took off.
10:04She's northbound Woodward.
10:14The cop is understandably shocked.
10:16He's never been in a situation like this.
10:18And they definitely don't train for it.
10:20The best he can do is radio in a description and ask for a pickup so he can help take the joyrider down.
10:25A black female walked across Woodward.
10:27I was talking to the gentleman at the bus stop.
10:29She got in the driver's seat and took off.
10:31Northbound on Woodward.
10:36You got a GPS on your truck.
10:38Yeah, there's GPS.
10:40As the woman points out, most if not all police vehicles are fitted with a GPS tracker that dispatch uses to help coordinate things back at base.
10:49Now all it comes down to is a giant game of cat and mouse across Detroit.
10:53The cops know the area better and they're better drivers, so it doesn't take long to get the stolen vehicle back in sight.
11:1910-4, sounds like we have a crash. 7 miles.
11:28In the car still?
11:33Get the fuck out of the car!
11:35Get the fuck out of the car, you mother fucker!
11:41Grab it, grab it, grab it!
11:43Come here!
11:45Get on the ground!
11:49It's mine.
11:53Put her in this.
11:57Do you know how many lives you just put in danger?
12:00Do you know how many people you just put in danger doing this?
12:02Yeah.
12:03Unbelievable. Get in.
12:07Unfortunately for us, there were no exciting chases or strategic maneuvers used to take Destiny down.
12:13She simply crashed into a parked car at over 80 miles per hour, completely wrecking her new ride.
12:18Multiple other vehicles also received damage from the event, and so Destiny was charged with unlawfully driving a vehicle, stealing property worth over $20,000, and fleeing police in an automobile.
12:29She was sentenced to four years in prison.
12:32Having a patrol car stolen from you must be one of the most surprising things that can happen to an officer.
12:37But in this situation, where two cars were stolen from right under their noses in a row, it must be straight up embarrassing.
12:45Are you fucking kidding me?
12:46During the first pursuit, the suspect was speeding down a public freeway and being chased by multiple cop cars, all while somehow managing to evade multiple pit maneuvers.
12:55This cop managed to put all his training to work and rammed the escaping vehicle off the road.
13:01Almost instantly, the wrecked patrol car is now surrounded by the police, but somehow not a single cop saw this coming.
13:10Hey y'all, do not walk up on this car. We've got enough people up there.
13:14Door! Close the door!
13:25He's on the move again in a Coco K-94, going north on 95.
13:32Air One, follow that car. He's got another car.
13:36Air One, Skyline is still northbound.
13:39Somehow, the escapee managed to run from the first crashed patrol vehicle and take over another one before putting his foot down and fleeing the scene once more.
13:51Any other vehicle, deal with them. Lock your doors.
13:55Just stick it.
13:57Alright.
14:02Which car? The Coco car?
14:05Coco SUV. Coco SUV. In the shoulder right now.
14:10Stick it! From both Port Orange units. Both stick it!
14:16Are there guns in the front of the car? Ask the K-9 handler from Coco.
14:21He said, yes, there probably is.
14:24Thinking fast, the cops managed to radio ahead to set up a team with a stinger, a piece of police equipment that punctures the tires of a vehicle and slowly brings them to a stop.
14:34That's why you can now start to see the car smoking, and soon enough, it'll be forced to slow down, or the driver will risk putting himself in a lot of danger.
14:44Alright, he's breaking for the median, guys. He's breaking for the median. Breaking for the median. Everybody slow down. Don't ball up here.
14:54It's underneath the wires. Underneath the wires.
14:58After coming to a safe stop, the driver exits the vehicle and is apprehended by the cops.
15:03It's difficult to believe such a professional stop was made by the same cops that let him steal a patrol car from right under their nose, but in the end, the stop was textbook.
