00:08:26But when I left school, I knew that, what, it's a gold professional.

00:08:43At the heart of a rejuvenation in boxing in the city of Manchester.

00:08:58The kid with no chance gets somewhere against the odds.
00:09:02In the 90s, some really good fighters were coming up from the Phoenix gym,
00:09:06just on the outskirts of Manchester.
00:09:09The best around here by far.
00:09:11We've got world-class fighters in this gym.
00:09:13Champions, you know what I mean? Champions to beat.
00:09:17That was set up by a man called Billy Graham.
00:09:20Decided to try and start a gym on my own.
00:09:22Obviously, I got no money.
00:09:24I just went for it and just got myself in a load of debt and got a gym.
00:09:27I knew Billy before I knew Ricky.
00:09:29I used to go round his house on a Saturday night for a booze-up.
00:09:34Is he on drugs?
00:09:35I could do with some.
00:09:38With his snakes and all that, he was a one-off, a complete one-off.
00:09:44No-one knew then, but eventually, Billy would become crucial to Ricky Hatton.

00:13:21what do you think about that fight, click, click, click, you know, I must have had about
00:13:24six brews and he must have had about 20 fags.
00:13:35He was loads of fun, he was dead funny.
00:13:40I was always laughing at him, he was always laughing at me.
00:13:44We was always taking the piss out of each other.
00:13:56I remember going home to my own and my missus, I said, he's the best kid I have ever seen.
00:14:05I said, he's going to be absolutely fucking fantastic.
00:14:21Billy was blown away with him.
00:14:23And Richard really, really wanted to turn pro.
00:14:27With the boxing, with Richard, it goes round about certain kids.
00:14:35And then when you get all the promoters wanting to sit down and talk to you, then you realise
00:14:43that at that moment it is becoming real.

00:15:25In order to be a professional boxer, you've got to be able to sell yourself.

00:15:48I was delighted because I'd gone from working for my dad in a carpet shop for like 150 quid
00:15:52a week and then there was fighting, getting a cheque for three grand, so I thought it's
00:15:56a bit more like it.
00:16:02Now a chance to show you one of the brightest young prospects in British boxing, Richard

00:16:08Watch out for this fellow, Richard Hatton, I think he really is one of the most exciting
00:16:13prospects we've had over the last decade.

01:03:27And if I felt down, I'd just go to the pub, you know what I mean,

01:03:39I think in the moment, it masked, you know,
01:03:43like, probably the feelings that he was having.

01:03:52how things would spiral from there.

01:22:08I think it was over in about four or five days.
01:22:15Every day after the court, I just walked straight out, just got pissed.
01:22:18It was killing me, bit by bit, it was killing me.
01:22:23It was absolutely killing me.
01:22:33The first question to Ricky was, how much did you get for the Kosozoo fight?
01:22:41So Ricky says, which I always thought, a million, million pounds.
01:22:50So my lawyer just went, no, you didn't, you got 1,200,000, that suggested that somebody
01:23:05else took 200 grand.
01:23:10I looked at Ray Hatton and I seen Ray Hatton making these gestures, you know what I mean?
01:23:17I don't mind telling you what the fallout was, because when you haven't done something,
01:23:22you can say it.
01:23:25They accused me that I was taking out money.
01:23:30They said money has gone into this account, this account, and this account.
01:23:38I went to my accountant and I said, there's been money going into other accounts.
01:23:43And he went, yeah, and I went, what, how much, and he told me, I went, oh, I went,
01:23:52oh, no.
01:23:53You've got to understand, everybody talks to each other.
01:24:00I asked somebody, how much, he just went, fucking loads.
01:24:05He might have said, fucking millions, I don't fucking know.
01:24:10Nobody ever came out right and said that Ray Hatton had stolen money, right?
01:24:20Ray is a lot of things he would not steal from his son.
01:24:27To try and safeguard Richard's finances, we set up a discretionary trust.
01:24:33It no longer legally is your money, but you and your family and your family down is the
01:24:40beneficiaries of it.
01:24:41I tried to tell him what had been done.
01:24:46And then, unfortunately, he turned around and said to me, you've been ripping me off.
01:24:52And when I come out, they'll call me out, just flopped out my body.
01:25:01I said, you can't move money and not tell the person in charge, you know, what's going on.
01:25:07You can't do that.
01:25:12It was all a misunderstanding.
01:25:15And I hadn't done the things that people said I'd done.
01:25:25Ricky Hatton has settled a £1.4 million claim for unpaid wages from his former trainer.
01:25:30Hatton reached a mutually acceptable deal with Billy Graham.
01:25:36I was vindicated in my eyes, do you know what I mean?
01:25:41But then I felt disgusted with myself to have felt like that.
01:25:52It is a tragedy.
01:25:55I think it's how it ended.
01:26:01I felt let down because I lost one of my best mates.
01:26:07And stuff was happening with my money that I didn't know about.
01:26:13I said to me dad, I think it's time we buy a company and have a little bit, give ourselves
01:26:19a bit of distance.
01:26:23I think it lasted for eight years.
01:26:46We'd already spoken about having a baby.
01:26:50We decided to try for Millie.
01:26:52And then later we had Fern.
01:26:56Start with that was great.
01:26:57But quite quickly, Rick was back in like a spiral of drinking.
01:27:03And he was really in like a bad depression now.
01:27:08There wasn't a night I'd go out and I wouldn't have drugs.
01:27:18I'd go out, you know, and I wouldn't come home.
01:27:22My family, Jennifer, would be worried about me, where is he, where is he?
01:27:27I didn't care.
01:27:30I can only apologise for my behaviour for that period.
01:27:34But as you can imagine, I was a poorly man.
01:27:38I desperately wanted him to share in the joy of our baby.
01:27:51And he couldn't, I couldn't reach him.
01:27:59He was not speaking to his family.
01:28:02It was all consuming for him.
01:28:04It just became like an obsession.
01:28:06It was all he could talk about all of the time.
01:28:14He may have thought I'd wronged him.
01:28:17I thought he'd wronged me.
01:28:18We couldn't see no way that it was going to be resolved.
01:28:25I was like grieving for my lad.
01:28:30Because he was alive, but didn't want to see us.
01:28:38He used to ring people up and said,
01:28:41could you let him know that his family haven't gone anywhere?
01:28:48He just used to text and say, Mum, don't phone, don't phone.
01:28:53You're not my mum anymore.
01:28:56And it was...
01:29:09It was bloody hard.
01:29:11You just think, from where we were as a loving family,
01:29:17holidaying together and doing so much together,
01:29:23how has this got to this?
01:29:42I felt as if he was walking down a dark tunnel away from me,
01:29:46and I couldn't do anything to get him back.
01:29:57I had no more boxing, no more Billy Graham,
01:30:02and no more Mum and Dad.
01:30:06And I just felt like I was going to die.
01:30:11I just didn't want to live.
01:30:17Night after night after night, you know,
01:30:19I'd sit there with a knife, and I'd be thinking,
01:30:21come on, you can do this, you can do this.
01:30:23And I couldn't, I couldn't do it.
01:30:26I couldn't do it, and I hated myself.
01:30:27I thought, you can do anything, you can beat him, beat him,
01:30:30fight him, do this, do that,
01:30:32but you can't just fucking kill yourself.
01:30:34He's a good person, and a lot of hard things
01:30:40has happened to him that has left him scarred.
01:30:47But I knew, after years and years and years, at this point,
01:30:51I knew I couldn't help him.
01:30:56I was leaving him when he needed me the most.
01:31:04But it was like a choice between peace or chaos,
01:31:09and I couldn't choose chaos anymore.
01:31:13And I went through a period
01:31:15where I didn't care whether I lived or died,
01:31:17and I thought to myself, I went fucking over it.
01:31:19This is bad this, this is bad this.
01:31:21You need to fucking sort yourself out
01:31:23and get yourself in the right space,
01:31:25and you need to get yourself in the right space,

01:31:29And I've been doing that for a long time,
01:31:31and I could see it and I've seen it because it was so hard.

01:31:36but it's like a lot of different things
01:31:39over it, this is bad this, this is bad this, you need to fucking sort yourself out, get
01:31:43yourself together, and I went and saw a psychiatrist, and you know what the best
01:31:46thing I did was go and speak to this fucking fella, this fella, I tell you what
01:31:50it brought me back to fucking life, it brought me back to life, if there's
01:31:55anyone here is suffering from it, please go and fucking speak to someone, you know,

01:33:45mail, I was absolutely heartbroken, I was crying, I was like, and I thought to

01:34:01I came out of the hospital and my phone went, and I looked at the text and it
01:34:11said, I'll come and see you.
01:34:18He knocked on the door and he said, are you putting the keckle on or what?
01:34:22No, I said, do you want a brew?
01:34:24No, he said no, because he was very, very nervous.
01:34:27Yes, he was nervous. He came in didn't he, Ray? Give us a hug.
01:34:32Sat here, had a brew, and as he was going, Ray was sat in that chair and he gave his
01:34:38dad a hug.
01:34:42I said, how did I ever go eight years without seeing you?
01:34:49It took me a long time to get where I am physically and mentally.
01:34:53Made up with my mum and dad. We fell out for a number of years, but they're there
01:34:59Saturday night, which means more to me than anything.
01:35:09It's not happened overnight.
01:35:14The first 12 months, I think my mum and dad would agree, were the hardest.
01:35:24We're 90% there with everything, but when it's been eight years, you can't push it.
