Lower house forms quad-committee to probe POGO-related crimes
Transcript
00:00Because of the supposed interconnectedness of illegal Philippine offshore gaming operators or POGOs and various criminal activities,
00:07the lower house thought it best to form a quad committee to investigate many issues that surround these dubious undertakings.
00:14For the lower house solons, their investigation is not politically motivated, but is merely a concerted effort to get to the truth.
00:22Melalee Moras tells us more.
00:25The house leadership vehemently denied that politics is behind the creation of the quad committee which will jointly probe the crimes
00:33connected to Philippine offshore gaming operators or POGO, as well as the issues on illegal drugs and alleged extrajudicial killings
00:41during the past administration which they think are interconnected with one another.
00:46The quad com is composed of the house committee on human rights, committee on public order and safety,
00:51committee on dangerous drugs and committee on public accounts.
00:54They are eyeing to invite to their investigation former President Rodrigo Duterte,
00:59who issued the executive order regarding POGOs during his term and launched the war on illegal drugs,
01:05as well as Senator Ronald de la Rosa, who was Duterte's former and first PNP chief.
01:22President Duterte invited former President Rodrigo Duterte to answer all these questions because this concerns our national security, and only he can answer these questions.
01:32This is not politics, this is not related to political persecution.
01:37We are just doing our job so that we can arrange the government agencies and government bodies to intervene in these cases.
01:50The quad com joint investigation will start on August 15.
01:54Prior to this, the committee on public order and safety, together with the committee on games and amusements,
01:59held a wrap-up hearing regarding their initial probe on POGOs.
02:03Former Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque and PACOR Chairman Alejandro Tenco attended this hearing once again.
02:10Meanwhile, amid the total POGO ban, the idea of replacing the lost revenue from POGOs with the isabong earnings also emerged in the lower house.
02:19However, some congressmen immediately pushed back on the proposition.
02:23For me, any form of gambling promotes corruption.
02:27Congressman Acob was right when he said that it is a social ill.
02:34Even if any form of gambling could provide some resources to the government, it is still a social ill.
02:43We cannot deny that.
