00:00Welcome back to Verona. We're all set then for Uruguay against Belgium.
00:07Very important game in Group E of the World Cup.
00:12Belgium who won their first game by two goals to nil against South Korea playing in the all-red strip.
00:18Uruguay in the lighter strip having drawn nil-nil with Spain in their first match when Ruben Sosa missed a penalty.
00:27The Uruguayans had a couple of bookings in that opening game.
00:34They say they're here to clean up their act a little. They do have a bad reputation in world football over the years.
00:41Osterlase getting his first touch there, the man who's come back in midfield. He's quite important to them.
00:46Tall figure.
00:48A sloppy pass. Will we see skill or skullduggery from Uruguay?
00:55Here's Schieffo. Still only 24, by the way, Schieffo.
01:04Play on, says the referee. Francescoli. He's got Elzemendy making a break. He's going to go alone.
01:10And as well for Prudhomme that Francescoli didn't really have his shooting boots on there.
01:17The 29-year-old skipper of Uruguay engineered the opening well.
01:25But both these sides, it more or less goes without saying, anxious not to give the other side anything at all.
01:32Now here's Werserwa with a little bit of space at last. Coulomans out to De Wolff.
01:37This is more interesting from Belgium.
01:40Well, that's very interesting indeed. And it's Clijsters, the veteran, who's got the goal.
01:48It was tight. It was tense. Nothing much was happening. But suddenly, Belgium are 1-0 up.
01:54And the goalscorer is Leo Clijsters.
01:59De Wolff with the overlap. Hit to the far post. Classic header.
02:05And headed down too. Brilliant header. Alves had no chance with that.
02:11And Clijsters, who's only scored two goals in 36 internationals before for Belgium,
02:19the defender storms forward to put his side ahead. What a vital goal.
02:25One from the coaching manual, or one for the coaching manual.
02:28The perfect cross, drifting away from the keeper. A good attacking header at the back post.
02:33Firmly headed back across the face of the goalkeeper into the opposite corner.
02:37As near to perfection as we will see in this World Cup.
02:43The game needed it. And it's got it. A goal. Belgium 1-0 Uruguay.
02:49Clijsters the scorer.
02:55Clijsters, who plays his football with Mechelen, that's his seventh club.
03:01Former Belgian Footballer of the Year.
03:04That was in 1988. His third goal for Belgium.
03:08And yes, of course, his first in Italia 90.
03:13Clijsters was a little bit worried about the role that had been assigned for him tonight.
03:17He was thinking he might have to pick up Francescoli and Sosa.
03:21And he thought, well, maybe Emmers should be in and doing the job.
03:24He had a lot to say to the newspapers on the subject.
03:27Well, I tell you what, he's glad they've picked him now.
03:32Can Belgium get another one here? It's not long.
03:35Uruguay survive a little uneasily.
03:42And a great start to the World Cup for Belgium.
03:45Victory in their first match and now an early goal against Uruguay.
03:49And here's De Wolff, who made the goal.
03:52Giving it away this time to Fadomo.
03:58Van der Elst, free kick.
04:09There's the goal again.
04:10It's always the main concern for the Belgians,
04:15is to make sure they get back in numbers.
04:18Their successes, such as they've been, have been built on that kind of thing.
04:21Now here they are in one of their breaks with Versavel this time.
04:27Schifo. Oh, he's done it.
04:302-0. Enzo Schifo.
04:37It's a great night for Belgium so far.
04:40And a great night for Schifo,
04:43who started the World Cup in outstanding form.
04:46He let go with that one.
04:50And Uruguay are in desperate trouble.
04:58Interesting to look at the replay of this one.
05:01It was an absolutely perfect hit.
05:04It almost looked in cricket parlance as though it was going outside the off stump
05:08and just cut back lately.
05:09It just bounced there.
05:11Very difficult one for the goalkeeper.
05:13He could have struck a better shot if he'd been trying all day long.
05:16It's really gone for Belgium this first period of the game.
05:20All the questions now are going to be posed to the Uruguayans.
05:23A tremendous start and a thoroughly enjoyable game.
05:28Schifo scoring his eighth goal for Belgium.
05:31His 39th cap tonight.
05:33And confirming that the young man is back as a major player on the international stage.
05:41This could be his year.
05:47We have seen some outstanding performers as well in midfield at this World Cup already.
05:51Dona Doni of Italy has certainly taken my eye.
05:54And let's not forget England's Paul Gascoigne as well who played superbly against Holland.
06:04Mateus of course is the goal again from Schifo.
06:07Must have been fully 30 yards.
06:09And he hit it probably in the one square inch of the goal.
06:14Now Alzemendi again with yet another free kick in an almost identical position
06:19to a couple of others that Uruguay have had and wasted.
06:22And that one is no more profitable for them.
06:25Ruben Sosa.
06:30Quality of the crossing.
06:33Nothing to write home about.
06:36From Uruguay.
06:38What can they create here?
06:39Alzemendi getting in behind the defence.
06:41This could be more interesting.
06:43Fredom will have to be there. Herrera.
06:45And the goalkeeper was all over the place there.
06:51And Herrera.
06:52Well if he'd only known that Fredom was going to make a mess of that
06:56maybe that would have been the goal that got Uruguay back into the match.
07:00Alzemendi's cross.
07:01And look at Fredom. Really flaps at it.
07:05But the upshot is a free kick to Uruguay.
07:08They've had a lot of free kicks around the box.
07:10They've made very little of them so far.
07:13Ruben Sosa of Lazio.
07:16Big things expected of him at this World Cup.
07:19What can he do here?
07:22Oh that's a good header and not far away
07:25from the defender Nelson Gutierrez.
07:31Playing on his home ground here in Verona.
07:35And that was close to putting Uruguay back into some sort of business here.
07:43He's a bit unlucky.
07:45Sosa drifting it across.
07:48Gutierrez storming forward using his height.
07:50Loping around.
07:51He doesn't look quite as busy and as forceful a presence
07:55as when I saw him against England at Wembley before the World Cup.
07:58I wonder if he really is 100%.
08:00Now Gerrits another foul there.
08:02He says Sosa took a dive.
08:04And the referee wants him and Gerrits could be on his way here.
08:07He's already got a yellow card.
08:10And I'm pretty sure here that Eric Gerrits is going to be sent off.
08:13He's accepting the decision.
08:15Yes he knows Ian.
08:16He knows it's unfortunate.
08:19He walked straight away.
08:23And look at that.
08:24He's indicating that Sosa took a dive and got him sent off.
08:29Judge for yourself.
08:33I didn't think Sosa took a dive.
08:35And neither did I think Gerrits did anything untoward behind him.
08:38He stumbled over the ball.
08:40Gerrits stumbled into him.
08:41And he is an unlucky man to be leaving this field.
08:46Eric Gerrits getting sent off.
08:53Podomo.
08:56And once again.
08:58He's miles and miles and miles off target.
09:03And Uruguay's shooting has been pretty poor frankly.
09:09It was an optimistic range anyway.
09:11It would have had to be a real firecracker to have found the net from there.
09:16Podomo with the goal kick for Belgium.
09:20And the whistle goes for half time.
09:24And quite an exciting first half as it turned out in the end in Verona.
09:29Belgium leading by two goals to nil.
09:33And there might be quite a bit of it in this second half too the way things are.
09:37And there's going to be a substitution right at the start of the half.
09:40Mark Emmers is going to come on.
09:42He's going to come on.
09:44The Mechelen player.
09:46He's a midfield player but I think he may be going back into the defence.
09:49And they've taken off the goal scorer Leo Kleisters.
09:52So this is obviously a tactical switch around by Belgium who kick off the second half.
09:57Wearing their all red strip that's under hit a little bit.
10:00And Prodom was alive to the danger.
10:05I think Uruguay have made a substitution as well.
10:08It looks like Alzamende, the 34-year-old has come off the winger.
10:12And they put on Aguilera who's wearing the number 18 shirt.
10:18Gutierrez.
10:24And here is Aguilera.
10:26Oh, second touch, almost a goal.
10:31What a start that would have been for the substitute.
10:35Plays his football for Genoa, Aguilera.
10:37He's been a regular with Uruguay since he was a 17-year-old.
10:41And that was eight years ago.
10:42But here comes Coulemans for Belgium.
10:45And it's 3-1.
10:47The old maestro has struck again.
10:5233-year-old Jan Coulemans.
10:55In his 90th appearance for Belgium.
10:59Has scored a vital, vital goal.
11:03For the 10 men.
11:04Belgium 3, Uruguay 1.
11:07And Uruguay will kick themselves.
11:15Belgium always dangerous on the break.
11:18Coulemans here, streaking into the gap.
11:21Dominguez, well, he might have been tighter on Coulemans.
11:24And he always says thank you so much for opportunities like these, Coulemans.
11:34His first full appearance in the World Cup of 1990, Coulemans.
11:39And he's marked it with a goal.
11:42And this is going to be so tough now for Uruguay.
11:45It was a wonderful run down the left-hand side.
11:47I believe by Versaval that led to that goal.
11:49Went past one man, two men, three men, before switching inside to Coulemans.
11:53All he did, calmly, with all his experience,
11:56take it in his stride and finish it so superbly.
11:59But it was the run that outwitted the Uruguayans
12:02and left them short of players at the back.
12:04A tragedy from their point of view.
12:06They can't recover from this, I'm sure.
12:10Stranger things have happened in World Cup history, of course, though.
12:163-0 to Belgium.
12:24Oh, that's nice football.
12:26Coulemans is down, the cross from Emers to the far post.
12:30A header, drifting over the bar,
12:33and watched by Alves, who had it covered.
12:35Versaval with that header.
12:37Meanwhile, Coulemans, within a few seconds of scoring, is down.
12:45Good cross this by the substitute Emers.
12:50Hugo de Leon.
12:53Ruben Sosa.
12:56Sosa with Francescoli, pretty much the danger man for Uruguay.
13:01Here he is again now, twisting, turning.
13:04And Aguilera.
13:06It's his second effort for the substitute,
13:09so he's been quite lively since he came on.
13:12But they can't seem to bring a save out of Prudhomme
13:15with all these shots that are raining in.
13:19I think Oscar Washington to Vares.
13:24And that was an important interception.
13:27Uruguay's corner, though.
13:36De Leon.
13:43Ruben Paz.
13:47Look at that Belgian defence.
13:49It's a red-shirted wall.
13:51They've given it away here.
13:53A chance for Gutierrez to come forward.
13:56And now Herrera.
13:58And once again, they can't find the target.
14:02The Belgian defenders close the ball very well.
14:05They're keeping them to 20 yards range,
14:07and every time they look to get in a shot,
14:09they're really rushing out there,
14:11so that if they were to slip the subtle ball through,
14:13there's always a chance of an offside decision.
14:15They're closing the forwards very, very well around the box.
14:18But I must say, I enjoy the talent of the Uruguayans on the ball.
14:21They've got good, clever tricks, movement, call it what you will.
14:24They can beat people with individual skill,
14:26and there's nothing that gives one more pleasure.
14:28Here's the shot again.
14:30Once again, hook wide.
14:31Uruguayan substitute.
14:33They need something special, because they're 3-0 down.
14:35Here's Francescoli.
14:39Uruguay still have it, rather luckily.
14:42But the defending is rugged from Dumont, as always.
14:48De Leon.
14:51Nice knock-off again.
14:53Paz.
14:54Oh, productive well.
14:57It just will not go for Uruguay.
15:00They've threaded their way through there quite beautifully.
15:04And Belgium's three-goal lead survives intact,
15:07courtesy of Michel Prudhomme of Mechelen.
15:13What can they work from this?
15:15Is it going to be a curler? It is.
15:17But it's wide.
15:29Here's Francescoli's free kick.
15:31He got it nearly right.
15:33Prudhomme had it covered anyway, I think.
15:38It was a fine effort.
15:41It was a fine effort, Ian.
15:44That was as good an effort as we've seen so far
15:46from a direct effort from a free kick.
15:48Fast swerve.
15:50De Leon gets it across.
15:52And Ben Goethe.
15:54And Uruguay might be back in business. 3-1.
15:59And they can't wait to get it started again.
16:03Goal out of nothing.
16:04The defender came forward.
16:06The substitute, Pablo Ben Goethe from Seville,
16:10put it away.
16:11How long left, he says.
16:15Good finish.
16:16Excellent finish.
16:17Super cross.
16:18Played back away from the defenders.
16:20And a first-class volley.
16:23He'd be very proud of that.
16:24And I feel it's no more than the Uruguayans deserve.
16:27Splendid effort.
16:29Beautifully kept down.
16:32Fine goal.
16:34And you feel that's about as much space
16:37as anybody is ever going to find
16:39in the Belgium penalty area tonight.
16:43Arriving late.
16:45And volleying it.
16:47Yeah, that's correct, Ian.
16:49I still feel, in general,
16:51the free kicks have been disappointing.
16:56Referee takes a glance at his watch.
17:00The ten men of Belgium, minus Eric Gerrits,
17:03have scored a notable 3-1 victory
17:07over Uruguay in Group E,
17:10which sends their fans into raptures.
17:15They're going to have a good night in Verona.
17:18And Belgium are in to the last 16 of the World Cup.
17:23As for Uruguay,
17:25they must hope for a win against South Korea
17:28in their last group match.
17:30The final score here, then,
17:32is Belgium 3, Uruguay 1.
