Round 2 of the 2000 F1 season at Sao Paulo.

00:00:04Emerson Fittipaldi won two titles, Nelson Piquet, three times world champion, and the
00:00:10great Ayrton Senna, also three times the titlist.
00:00:14But the void created by Senna's loss could not immediately be filled by this man, Rubens
00:00:19Barrichello.
00:00:20But now, he returns home for Ferrari, off a strong second-place finish in Melbourne,
00:00:25in front of hordes of fans.
00:00:27Barrichello leads the boys from Brazil to their Formula One homecoming.
00:00:32Welcome to the Autodromo Juan Carlos Pace, the Interlagos circuit outside Sao Paulo for
00:01:00the Grand Prix of Brazil, round two in the FIA Formula One World Championship for the
00:01:06year 2000.
00:01:07Mike Joy with five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell, and Peter Wintzer in the pit lane as
00:01:13the reconnaissance laps begin.
00:01:16Our Mercedes-Benz pre-race begins also, as we hit this second event of the year 2000.
00:01:23A lot of anticipation, especially for this man, Mika Hakkinen, who, like his McLaren
00:01:27Mercedes teammate David Coulthard, again, for the second year in a row, came away from
00:01:32Australia with no points.
00:01:33A reliability problem that we'll hear more about in a minute, and that has been cured,
00:01:39we're told.
00:01:40And the McLarens are again fast, here in Brazil, and will start at the front of the grid.
00:01:47So, as the warm-up continues, let's bring you up to date.
00:01:50Ferrari scored a stunning one-two.
00:01:53In Australia, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello lead the points.
00:01:56Ralph Schumacher, third, in BMW's maiden voyage.
00:02:00Jacques Villeneuve and Riccardo Zonta scored BAR's first-ever Formula One points, and Giancarlo
00:02:06Fisichella with two.
00:02:08So the manufacturers, with Ferrari scoring maximum points in Australia, Williams and
00:02:12BAR, four points apiece, and Benetton, two.
00:02:15Notably, no points for McLaren Mercedes, or for Jordan Mugen Honda.
00:02:21So, recon laps underway.
00:02:24Most of the cars out on the circuit.
00:02:26At this time, Jarno Trulli has not had the best weekend so far.
00:02:33You see he'll line up 12th today.
00:02:35He was going very quickly, actually, in early practice, but he really made a mess of things
00:02:39in qualifying, going off on the first lap, and that cost him dearly.
00:02:42David Coulthard about to roll out, waiting for the tire warmers to come off.
00:02:46Well, one team that's had a dismal weekend is that of Peter Sauber.
00:02:50Rear wing failures have occurred on both cars.
00:02:53One in practice, and one in qualifying.
00:02:56So the Sauber team has been withdrawn.
00:02:59This was to be Pedro Diniz's homecoming.
00:03:02Peter caught up with him.
00:03:03Pedro, a very unfortunate decision, withdrawing the cars from this race.
00:03:06Describe your feelings at your home Grand Prix.
00:03:09Well, I'm very, very disappointed, because this is my home Grand Prix, as you said,
00:03:14and I was looking forward to that.
00:03:17It's really disappointing for me to not start in this race tomorrow.
00:03:22And when we got the first decision in qualifying to stop qualifying,
00:03:27I was completely against that, and I wanted to continue qualifying.
00:03:32But now, looking to everything, and Peter Sauber explained to me the reasons,
00:03:38and it's actually, I agree with that, because it can be pretty dangerous,
00:03:45and not only for us that is driving the car, but for the other competitors,
00:03:51because if you have a wing flying away, it can go near the car and ahead of other drivers,
00:03:57so it's pretty dangerous for the other cars too.
00:04:00So I think it's the right decision.
00:04:03Well, it shows that common sense does prevail,
00:04:05because if one of those wings comes off the back of the car,
00:04:07you lose something like 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of downforce,
00:04:10which makes the car at the back very light,
00:04:12and of course that wing coming through the air at 180 miles an hour
00:04:15would be very unpleasant for the car behind.
00:04:17So Sauber is the story of this morning.
00:04:19They are not going to race today, but there's lots of news to catch up on
00:04:23in the two weeks since Australia.
00:04:25Here's Peter Windsor to update us.
00:04:28Since early this morning, the pit lane here at Interlagos
00:04:31has been alive to the sound of a wild Brazilian Samba,
00:04:34and there's no doubt who the capacity crowd have come to see.
00:04:37Rubens Barrichello having his Grand Prix debut for Ferrari
00:04:40in front of his home crowd.
00:04:42Big news in the paddock is the $120 million takeover
00:04:46of the Benetton Formula 1 team by Renault.
00:04:49Rocco Benetton has already resigned as team principal,
00:04:51and the new board has been set up,
00:04:53with Patrick Four and Christian Constant on the Renault side,
00:04:56and on the British side, running the Benetton side of things,
00:04:59or what used to be the Benetton side of things, Flavio Briatore,
00:05:02the very politically connected former team manager of Benetton.
00:05:06$120 million, expensive you might think, but not too bad
00:05:09compared with the $320 million Mercedes are reported to have paid
00:05:13for 40% of McLaren last year.
00:05:16First still flying at Ferrari and McLaren.
00:05:18McLaren's Ron Dennis accusing Ferrari of tanking
00:05:21Rubens Barrichello's race in the Australian Grand Prix,
00:05:24bringing him in for a final fuel stop, thus to let Michael Schumacher win,
00:05:27but all parties concerned have confirmed that Barrichello was indeed
00:05:30on a two-stop strategy to free him up from that battle
00:05:33he was having with Frentzen's Jordan.
00:05:35Finally, Bernard Eccleston has confirmed a 50% sale
00:05:38of the Formula 1 industry to the German conglomerate EMTV.
00:05:42This group owns the Muppet shows, apparently,
00:05:44so pretty apt they should own Formula 1.
00:05:46$1.6 billion, the price tag there,
00:05:49and we're wondering who Kermit the Frog is going to be driving for.
00:05:52My guess is Ferrari. Back to you.
00:05:54Well, Kermit is green.
00:05:56I'd imagine he'll have to drive for Jaguar, do you think?
00:05:59The Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues right after this word.

00:06:28Would you race exactly the same way against your brother
00:06:31as you would against a Micah Hakkinen or a David Coulthard?
00:06:35Well, I think we wouldn't need to because we know each other very good.
00:06:38And we would fight against each other.
00:06:41We did.
00:06:42We did. In Magny-Cours, for example, we did a couple...
00:06:44Or Söldwig.
00:06:45Söldwig, yeah, we did.
00:06:47Luckily, he closed me the door.
00:06:49Yeah, he nearly crashed into my back.
00:06:52But I think, you know, in a way, we shouldn't say that
00:06:55because motor racing and all that got so serious now,
00:06:58but I still enjoy doing that.
00:07:00I think it's the same for him.
00:07:02Yeah.
00:07:03I mean, you do race with an open mind
00:07:07and you know who you work with.
00:07:09You know you're not going to expect silly things, bad things.
00:07:12You simply fight and you...
00:07:14Because that's what we enjoy.
00:07:15I mean, we want to fight.
00:07:16We want to really have this situation
00:07:19and we can be with ourselves very serious, on the limit,
00:07:23but enjoying it, really.
00:07:29It's the first time ever
00:07:30the Schumacher brothers have sat down for a joint interview
00:07:33since they've both been in Formula 1
00:07:34and you will see much more of it in two weeks' time
00:07:37when we bring you the Grand Prix of San Marino.
00:07:40That's Fisichella's Benetton being attended to
00:07:43as our Mercedes-Benz pre-race continues.
00:07:46We're calling it Benetton.
00:07:47I'm not sure what we're going to be calling it next year
00:07:50since Renault has purchased Benetton.
00:07:52As Peter informed us, there's Michael Schumacher,
00:07:54the point leader and Australia winner.
00:07:57So Renault returns to Formula 1, Derek,
00:07:59and what a wonderful history they have in this sport.
00:08:02Yes, they have supported many, many teams,
00:08:05won a tremendous number of races,
00:08:06as you can see from that graphic.
00:08:08They've, in fact, fueled five world champions in their cars.
00:08:11Nigel Mantz with Williams,
00:08:12Prost with Williams,
00:08:13Schumacher with Benetton,
00:08:14Damon Hill with Williams
00:08:15and Jacques Villeneuve with Williams.
00:08:17But they never, ever won a world championship
00:08:19with their own car
00:08:20and that, I believe, is why they're coming back
00:08:21and why they bought Benetton.
00:08:23So Benetton will remain as a sponsor of the team,
00:08:26which will eventually be badged Renault.
00:08:28That's part of the terms of the buyout.
00:08:31Well, it's rare that both McLarens should fall out of the race
00:08:34and in our technical expose today,
00:08:36Peter has a look at what happened to the McLarens in Australia.
00:08:39Both McLaren and Mercedes retiring from the Australian Grand Prix
00:08:42with an air pressure loss from the engine,
00:08:44which highlights a system unique to Formula 1 engines.
00:08:47Because of the immensely high speeds at which these engines operate,
00:08:50and we're talking here something like 17,500, 18,000 rpm,
00:08:54there is absolutely no way that a standard mechanical spring
00:08:57can do the job it needs to do for the engine valve.
00:09:00So Formula 1 engine designers, about five years ago,
00:09:03came across the system, a pneumatic valve system,
00:09:05which allows the valve to be cushioned in air.
00:09:08But the important thing here, of course,
00:09:09is that the air has to be a constant pressure.
00:09:11It's monitored lap by lap in the back of the garage.
00:09:14And in most cases, there are slight fluctuations,
00:09:16but they're not a drama.
00:09:17In Australia, as we saw,
00:09:18both McLaren and Mercedes had sudden drops of air pressure
00:09:21and I asked Adrian Newey, technical director of the team,
00:09:24how such a thing could happen.
00:09:25Very good question.
00:09:27The specification of the engine really stayed the same through the winter.
00:09:30We've been completely reliable in that area,
00:09:32and that really came out of the blue.
00:09:34So it was as much a surprise for us as it was for everybody else.
00:09:38We understand that McLaren believe the problem was caused by vibration
00:09:41in the area around the mounting points of the air bottles.
00:09:44So for this race, they've relocated the air bottle
00:09:46and insulated those mounting points.
00:09:48Let's see what happens to McLaren-Mercedes in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
00:09:51Back to you.
00:09:52Well, you can bet your sweet life that Mercedes fans
00:09:54would not make the same mistake twice.
00:09:56No, certainly not.
00:09:58So they expect to have full reliability for this race today in Brazil,
00:10:02where they have prevailed.
00:10:04Whoa, look at that.
00:10:05The Ferrari actually braking very, very wide there.

00:10:12Remember, we do have a new surface here this year,
00:10:14and that is causing a lot of problems,
00:10:16particularly as we had some rain yesterday.
00:10:22So reconnaissance laps continue here
00:10:24in the opening stages of our Mercedes-Benz pre-race.
00:10:28Coming up, we'll have a look at one of the most bizarre qualifying sessions
00:10:31in recent memory, punctuated by three red flags for...

00:10:44There's the World Championship leader, Michael Schumacher,
00:10:46climbing out after his reconnaissance laps.
00:10:48And there's the car of David Coulthard with the front wheels off.
00:10:51And some repairs being made.

00:11:37Yeah, well, it's certainly a lot smoother than it was.
00:11:39The orange areas are where the cars build up for an overtake
00:11:42just before they get to the center.
00:11:44S is 2.7 miles.
00:11:45The drivers like it, but it is counterclockwise.
00:11:48Ten corners counterclockwise.
00:11:50So let's go ride with Rubens Barrichello.
00:11:52As we go by the pits now up to 185 miles an hour.
00:11:56Severe braking second gear as he goes down into the first of the center S's.
00:12:00The second part is vital to get it as clean as you can
00:12:03because it leads out onto this back straightaway.
00:12:06135 miles an hour.
00:12:07Fifth gear he gets here down, right the way down to a very hard braking.
00:12:11The surface has been remarkably changed, but it's very slippery and it's still bumpy.
00:12:16Down to 80 miles an hour.
00:12:17Third gear accelerates through here flat up to fourth gear
00:12:21and up to fifth gear on a straight called the Reta Posta.
00:12:24Comes down towards Ferradura.
00:12:26Turns in there.
00:12:27120 miles an hour in fourth gear.
00:12:29Difficult to get the power and you can see the actual camber of the road
00:12:32slightly drops away as he works his way up to a first gear corner.
00:12:36Out accelerates one of the other McLarens.
00:12:39Goes through this corner.
00:12:40You can see how those curbs really kick the car out of shape.
00:12:43Comes down again to another very slow first gear corner.
00:12:45The actual slowest corner.
00:12:46Look how much lock effort he has to put in.
00:12:48He doesn't use all the road as he weeds his way out of there.
00:12:51Gently through there.
00:12:52He wants to keep the car on a perfect line for braking
00:12:55as he comes up to the last corner.
00:12:56Second gear.
00:12:5760 miles an hour.
00:12:58He's got to be immaculate.
00:13:00Get total traction as he works his way onto this very, very long straight.
00:13:04He's pulling 160 miles an hour now as he works his way down.
00:13:08He's going to sweep across the pit entrance.
00:13:10There it is.
00:13:11Wow, look at that.
00:13:12Don't want to run into anybody there.
00:13:13That was the lap with Rubens Barrichello.
00:13:16And the only thing missing were all those fans dressed in red
00:13:19because the line to get into this racetrack, it was a very orderly line,
00:13:23and we are told that it stretched over a mile of fans lined up three deep
00:13:29to get in here today.
00:13:31And look at all of that red for Rubens Barrichello.
00:13:38Well, as we said, it was a rather bizarre qualifying session
00:13:41with three red flags.
00:13:43Garrett, let's have a look at the highlights.
00:13:46Well, qualifying was intriguing.
00:13:47A little shot there of this magnificent city of San Paolo
00:13:50where many great drivers have come from,
00:13:52and there's the racetrack very close to it.
00:13:54Brazilian Ricardo Zonda went out there.
00:13:56His best ever qualifying.
00:13:58Eighth place as he goes into the S's.
00:14:00Rubens Barrichello was expecting great things of him.
00:14:02Look at the crowds.
00:14:04He goes out early on.
00:14:05There's a very good time.
00:14:06Ultimately qualified fourth, but he really, really needed that pole position.
00:14:11Jarno Trulli, well, he was very quick all weekend,
00:14:14but he went off in the kitty litter, and he didn't qualify at all well.
00:14:17Very disappointing for Jordan.
00:14:19Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:14:21Well, the new team, Benetton now bought by Renault.
00:14:24He put in a stirring performance to qualify in fifth place.
00:14:27Schumacher, meanwhile, he's trying to get up there on the front row,
00:14:30tries everything, but he cannot match the incredible driving of Mika Hakkinen.
00:14:35Damages the chassis.
00:14:36Raul Schumacher.
00:14:37He's out there trying exceptionally hard to try and show just how well he went in Melbourne.
00:14:42Wasn't a fluke.
00:14:43Eddie Irvine.
00:14:44He did an excellent job in the Jaguar.
00:14:46One expected him to do well, but he did exceptionally well here.
00:14:49Qualified very quickly.
00:14:50Let's hope there is reliable.
00:14:52Gaston Mezzacane, meanwhile, first run here, second Grand Prix ever.
00:14:56He spins off, and he actually had two runs back to the pits during the weekend to get a fresh car.
00:15:01Nick Heupfeld, one of the rookies in the series in the cross car.
00:15:04He tries very hard, but they've had a lot of problems within the team.
00:15:08But it was this man, Mika Hakkinen.
00:15:10Very composed, beautiful, elegant piece of driving.
00:15:13Gets his car yet again for his 23rd pole position.
00:15:16Michael Schumacher's not content to lie there.
00:15:19He tries to get up, but he only manages third place.
00:15:22David Coulthard.
00:15:23Well, what can you say about David?
00:15:25He just cannot quite match Mika Hakkinen's pace, and he's always just behind.
00:15:30Rubens Barrichello, the local hero, goes out in the Ferrari just before the rain comes to try and get a quick lap in.
00:15:35But red flags.
00:15:37The advertising billboards have fallen down.
00:15:39Three occasions they brought the red flags out to clean it up.
00:15:42Look at the Ferrari mechanics.
00:15:44They cannot believe his best lap's been destroyed.
00:15:47Jack Villeneuve, well, he took, and he had to run over those hoardings trying to complete a fast lap.
00:15:52Not at all satisfactory.
00:15:54The rain came.
00:15:55Michael Schumacher takes a look at the McLaren.
00:15:57Let's hear what he has to say.
00:15:59It's completely two different cars.
00:16:01It was the first time I had a proper chance to look at it.
00:16:04And so I take the opportunity.
00:16:07Peter Winters talking with Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:16:11Giancarlo, did you expect the car to go this well at the start of the weekend?
00:16:16Yes, a little bit.
00:16:17Especially on Friday, when with a lot of fuel the car was good.
00:16:22And I understood the good possibility to be in the top 16 qualifying.
00:16:27I am very confident for today and hope to get on the podium.
00:16:32Well, very confident indeed.
00:16:33And a big weekend for this team.
00:16:35Let's hope that he's correct.

00:16:37Well, pre-race strategy.
00:16:39The gearbox is really the very, very basic problem with this circuit.
00:16:43Three first gear corners.
00:16:44They're going to take a real thrashing.
00:16:46Overtaking, that is much easier here.
00:16:48But you have to still be a very brave man.
00:16:50And it is a very physical race.
00:16:52The most physical track of the year because it's counterclockwise.
00:16:56Look at the fans.
00:16:58This is really going to be a wild one in the stands, if not on the track.

00:18:14Jacques, already the Indy Formula One race is the biggest Formula One event of all time.
00:18:18220,000 tickets already sold.
00:18:20Can you tell us your feelings about going back and racing in America, this time in a Formula One car?
00:18:25Oh, it's great.
00:18:27I have very great memories from racing in the States, an Indy car, and also from racing at Indy.
00:18:32You know, Indy, when I raced there on the Oval, there was half a million people.
00:18:38And winning there was very, very special.
00:18:40So going back there is going to bring some great memories.
00:18:43But not being on the Oval is not going to be that nice, though.
00:18:47There's a little bit of Oval there. There's Turn 1 the wrong way.
00:18:50Yeah, we're going to go through one turn, but not with a lot of speed,
00:18:53because we're just going to come out of the infield and then get on the Oval a bit.
00:18:57So maybe for the guys that haven't been there in Indy car, then that's going to be impressive.
00:19:02But once you've been going through these turns flat out at 230 miles an hour,
00:19:05then it's not going to feel very special.
00:19:07Well, they're saying the top speed on the straight is going to be about 210 miles an hour,
00:19:10which is not bad for Formula One.
00:19:12Yeah, that's pretty good.
00:19:14Hopefully Turn 1 will be pretty tight so we can have some good overtaking.
00:19:19I haven't really seen the track. I just saw a drawing on a piece of paper,
00:19:22and it's always hard to judge on that.
00:19:24But I'm definitely looking forward to going there.

00:19:40now with Jaguar, and then there's Jackie Stewart to wish him well in his own Grand Prix.
00:19:53Well, earlier Peter Windsor caught up one-on-one with the man who finished third in Australia,
00:19:57Ralph Schumacher.
00:20:01It's been acclaimed as the best performance by a new engine in Formula One for over 30 years,
00:20:05and the man that took the new Williams BMW to third place in the Australian Grand Prix
00:20:09was Ralph Schumacher.
00:20:10We spoke to Ralph about testing over the winter, working with BMW,
00:20:13and his real aspirations before that race began.
00:20:17Well, the best I hope was to finish the race anyway.
00:20:20I mean, we didn't manage to do a whole race since, as the year before,
00:20:24so we went very open-minded to Melbourne.
00:20:27What were your emotions as you crossed the line and took third place,
00:20:30podium finish with that engine first time out?
00:20:33Well, first, when I came out of the pits, all of a sudden I saw P3 on my board.
00:20:37I couldn't believe it. I thought, OK, that can't be right.
00:20:40Obviously, from then on, I just tried to save everything to carry it home.
00:20:45Crossing the finish line was a great feeling, obviously, for the whole team,
00:20:49having had such a difficult winter session,
00:20:51and, you know, especially for that new joint venture, BMW-Williams,
00:20:56it's a great result, isn't it?
00:20:58What was it like over the winter, doing all that engine testing?
00:21:00There were obviously very frustrating days, days when nothing happened.
00:21:03Was it a new experience for you?
00:21:05Well, you know, it was quite OK, but having said that,
00:21:08I didn't do a lot of winter testing this year,
00:21:10because, you know, we had that situation to sort out the driver,
00:21:13then we had Jenson, he had to do a lot of mileages,
00:21:16so I ended up doing nearly nothing in December and January,
00:21:19so that was quite nice for me.
00:21:20And then I came in February, and the most problems were sorted already.
00:21:24That was quite good, then.
00:21:25Great result in Melbourne, though, so what are your aspirations now?
00:21:28What are the aspirations of the team?
00:21:30It's a bit difficult. I think we have a good package.
00:21:33We have a good car and a relatively strong and drivable engine.
00:21:37As long as it keeps working and running on the track,
00:21:41I'm sure we are good for points.
00:21:43But, you know, that's what we're looking for.
00:21:46It's a very interesting chemistry in this team now.
00:21:48We have Patrick Head and Frank Williams,
00:21:50the last of the Englishmen, if you like,
00:21:52and we have BMW, obviously, in their own way of doing things.
00:21:55It must be quite interesting, from your point of view,
00:21:57to watch this interaction.
00:22:00Well, it's German and English character coming together in their team now,
00:22:04and obviously sometimes they're different,
00:22:06but, you know, it works quite good so far.
00:22:09It was quite difficult to start with,
00:22:11but now everybody knows what they should do
00:22:13and what they're supposed to do, and it's quite good,

00:24:17Today, a tenth of a second could mean

00:24:21Well, Riccardo Zonta, his best qualifying position ever

00:24:26Yes, but Zonta had smoke coming from the back of his car
00:24:28as he took off on the formation lap,

00:25:48The reason is the retirement of both Saubers,
00:25:51Brazilian Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo,
00:25:53due to the rear wing failures.
00:25:55Diniz, however, is going to be broadcasting the race
00:25:58for Globo Brazil Television,
00:26:00so he'll have some work to do today
00:26:03at his home Grand Prix.
00:26:05Alexander Virts came around there.
00:26:06You saw him screaming around at the back of the grid.
00:26:08He'll have to start from the back of the grid.
00:26:10And they were working very much on Schumacher's car.
00:26:12They've been adjusting it all morning
00:26:14because they had to rebuild the chassis overnight.
00:26:16They got on the grid just on the last second.
00:26:18Well, Brazil, Derek, has always been a telling race
00:26:21in the world championship.
00:26:22Since 1994, the winner of this race
00:26:25has gone on to be world champion.
00:26:28So, of course, that means Mika Hakkinen
00:26:29is the two-time defending champion
00:26:31of the Grand Prix of Brazil,
00:26:32and he starts from pole today.
00:26:36It's obviously very evident
00:26:37that they are slightly offset on the grid,
00:26:39so they don't start exactly side by side.

00:26:43that had the problem with the Benetton, not Fisichella,
00:26:45so he will go to the tail end of the grid

00:28:57is that passing zone at the end of that long straightaway.
00:29:00And Michael Schumacher has
00:29:03completed the first on-track lead change of the season.
00:29:05It's magnificent.
00:29:07But it's...
00:29:08You can see the bumps when they're coming into this braking area.
00:29:10You can see the circuit still is very, very bumpy.
00:29:13Now, of course, what we don't know here
00:29:14is what about pit strategy.
00:29:16The pit entrance, or should I say
00:29:18the line of deceleration
00:29:20has been extended by another 90 metres
00:29:23for this race since yesterday in qualifying,
00:29:26which means that it's going to be
00:29:27at this ridiculously low speed
00:29:29of 47 miles an hour, a lot longer.
00:29:31We know that, as it was on Friday,
00:29:33it was going to put 15 seconds
00:29:34onto the length of the pit stop.
00:29:36And that makes you wonder,
00:29:37because it puts the pit stop up
00:29:38to something like just 35 seconds
00:29:40for the pit stop, and that is far too long.
00:29:42So a lot of these guys
00:29:43are going for a one-stop strategy,
00:29:44I'm convinced.
00:29:46And as we said in Australia,
00:29:47it's hard to see the advantage to be gained
00:29:49with that extra time in the pit lane.
00:29:51And look at the lead that Schumacher has built up.
00:29:53You see him bouncing across there,
00:29:56the bumps in the pavement.
00:29:591.9 seconds over Mika.
00:30:01Of course, yesterday,
00:30:02because of the rain,
00:30:03we never really saw Schumacher's final speed,
00:30:05but he did say before the weekend
00:30:08in the driver's interview,
00:30:09he said, look, I know that we can get qualifying
00:30:11on pole, but we don't need to.
00:30:13And Barrichello has gotten past Coulthard.
00:30:15Yeah, here he goes, here's the pass.
00:30:18In 10th.
00:30:21That's the great thing
00:30:22when you see this sort of a classic circuit
00:30:24where this track is now,
00:30:25you can actually still make these overtaking moves.
00:30:28And it's vital for Formula 1's future
00:30:30to have this overtaking.
00:30:32Activity in the Jaguar pit,
00:30:33not sure if it's for Irvine,
00:30:36who's placed fifth,
00:30:37or for Johnny Herbert,
00:30:38who's back in 15th.
00:30:39No doubt it's for Johnny,
00:30:41because if anybody has the bad luck this year,
00:30:43it's that poor guy.
00:30:45But they've done a lot of work
00:30:46back at Silverstone since the last Grand Prix
00:30:48two weeks ago,
00:30:49and they seem to be improving that somewhat.

00:31:26he makes it all day with Ruben.

00:31:32coming out onto the back straightaway.
00:31:33He obviously got the traction that we talked about
00:31:35in that qualifying session.
00:31:36Sorry, in the lap we did with Rubens earlier.

00:31:42Very careful here,
00:31:43doesn't find him there too fast.
00:31:46Well, that's very significant, Derek,
00:31:47in that it's not a pass taken out of
00:31:49slipstreaming past him and braking,
00:31:51but right from the start of that straightaway.
00:31:53But I don't think it's the sheer power of the Ferrari,
00:31:55I think Coulthard probably was trying to slow,
00:31:58to hold up Barrichello from getting by him
00:32:01going into the previous turn.
00:32:02He'd lost a bit of ground,
00:32:03and of course that means that he had to
00:32:05lose acceleration.
00:32:07Leading onto that straightaway,
00:32:08you see, even though they cut that pit lane very close,
00:32:10they don't appear to use the whole width
00:32:12of the circuit coming out,
00:32:14coming out of that corner.
00:32:16Now Barrichello, as you see,
00:32:17his best finish was fourth here back in 94.
00:32:19Since that time,
00:32:21he has not finished his home run.
00:32:23We're going to ride along with him.
00:32:41Now Barrichello has pretty well caught up Mika Hakkarinen.
00:32:45I wonder if there's something going on here with this,
00:32:47with the tyres.
00:32:49I'm pretty positive that,
00:32:51look at those braking areas.
00:32:52See that? The bumps in the road,
00:32:53the black patches is where the car is literally
00:32:55sort of leaping across that,
00:32:56like a washboard effect.
00:32:58I was led to believe that they're all
00:33:00on the medium tyre,
00:33:02which is the hardest tyre that they have here.
00:33:05I can't see the advantage of Ferrari
00:33:08trying to get away enough to do a two-foot turn.
00:33:10It means that Mika is going to get away
00:33:11some considerable amount of time.
00:33:13Well, that would be the most obvious explanation,
00:33:15is that the McLarens are running with a much heavier fuel load,
00:33:18and thus the Ferraris have the opportunity
00:33:20to be quicker off the corners.
00:33:21And you see how Schumacher has pulled away,
00:33:23and now how Barrichello has caught up Mika Hakkarinen.
00:33:26But the obvious strategy, as we saw in Australia,
00:33:28is not always the correct one.
00:33:30So, will you? Like you? We'll wait and see.

00:33:56because he's got the front nearly locked up.

00:34:02This is going to be a move very shortly,
00:34:04but Mika seems to have certainly good power on the straight,
00:34:06but Ferrari catches him up on the infield.
00:34:08This is a circuit where, of course,
00:34:10you have this 185-mile-an-hour straight
00:34:12combined with a lot of bumps
00:34:14and very twisty first, second, third gear corners.
00:34:16So, you have to combine aerodynamics
00:34:18with a very soft suspension to absorb the bumps.
00:34:22But I don't know, this looks a bit close.
00:34:24No, he's having a look, but he can't quite make it.
00:34:26Mika Hakkarinen will, the first time he's seen Mika,
00:34:28actually under pressure for a long, long time.

00:35:10I can't believe they're both running a lighter fuel load,
00:35:12because you can't believe that both Ferraris
00:35:14are going to get by both the McLarens and pull away.
00:35:16It's too much to expect from the second row.
00:35:18And we saw Rubens in Australia.
00:35:20He couldn't get by the Jordan of Frenzen
00:35:22for the half of that race,
00:35:24which meant that they could,
00:35:25although they gave him a two-lap strategy,
00:35:27it wasn't going to work.
00:35:30Alexander Burtz is pulled off the course.
00:35:32He started from the pit lane,
00:35:34from the engine compartment,
00:35:36and Burtz is out of the race.
00:35:38They're doing 170 miles an hour,
00:35:40pulling up to 185 as they go by the pits.
00:35:43Oh, look at him.
00:35:44He has a lot of oil coming out of the back.
00:35:46And that's the end of the Supertec engine.
00:35:49Now that Renault, of course, have an interest
00:35:51in that team, or own the team,
00:35:53I'm sure we'll see improved engines.
00:35:55And they'll be doing a development for the future.
00:35:57They say that they have an outstanding
00:35:59engine development program ahead.
00:36:04Well, now Barrichello seems to have settled
00:36:06well within striking distance,
00:36:08but he just isn't getting close enough
00:36:10at the start of that front straightaway
00:36:11to put the move to me.
00:36:12Well, what you all have to appreciate, of course,
00:36:14is that he can't get that close
00:36:16because of the sheer dynamics and turbulence
00:36:18behind the car in front.
00:36:19You can't see it from here,
00:36:20but they lose something like 20% of downforce
00:36:23on their cars by being behind another car.
00:36:25He's very close here,
00:36:26but that is only a second-gear corner.
00:36:31Very close here again in the slower corners.
00:36:33Once he gets going onto the back straightaway,
00:36:35it's kind of difficult for him to stay that close
00:36:37because he washes out on the front of the car.
00:36:43When I say washing out,
00:36:44I mean you can't quite turn in at the speed you want to.
00:36:46You see, he's lost that bit of speed there.
00:36:48You can't turn in because the car just slides on the front.
00:36:53We're watching the battle for second place.
00:36:55Mika Hakkinen and his teammate David Coulthard
00:36:57qualified one-two,
00:36:58got off the grid first and third,
00:37:00but now run.
00:37:03Second and fourth.

00:38:33Truly is doing an outstanding job
00:38:34when you consider he qualified 12th,
00:38:36but he did show such good speed during practice
00:38:39all over the weekend.
00:38:41It appears not to be a sound issue,
00:38:43but perhaps a brake bias problem with Eddie Irvine,
00:38:45because there he locked the left front
00:38:47going into one of those left turns.
00:38:48He can adjust it.
00:38:49Obviously, he can adjust the brakes,
00:38:51but it's such a very fine adjustment.
00:38:53And, of course, he's under this pressure from Truly,
00:38:55and he hasn't really been under pressure.
00:38:57I remember in Melbourne two weeks ago,
00:38:59Eddie actually dropped back from 6th on the grid
00:39:01to 11th place before he had his incident,
00:39:04which wasn't created by him,
00:39:05but got involved in somebody else's incident.
00:39:08Here we go again.
00:39:10That's Nick Heidfeld.
00:39:11Trouble again for Prost as his engine has gone at lap 10.
00:39:15That was a very dangerous maneuver by Nick Heidfeld
00:39:17to pull straight across in front of the car behind him,
00:39:20but look at the back of it.
00:39:21It's all locked up as he gets on the grass.
00:39:23They're having such a bad time with these Prost engines.
00:39:25I don't think that maybe next year they will run these,
00:39:28maybe customer Mercedes-Benz engines.

00:39:39Let's have a look back at the start of this race

00:39:56Eddie Irvine, too, quite well there.
00:39:59There's the pass for the lead,
00:40:01and simultaneously,
00:40:02Arakela comes through for third.
00:40:04Mick Hacken is such a clean driver.
00:40:07He does such a super professional job.
00:40:09He could have pushed Michael, made it tighter for him,
00:40:11but he didn't.
00:40:15I think he's kind of set the tone
00:40:17for the last few years in Formula 1.
00:40:20We went through several seasons of,
00:40:22if you're coming into the corner with me,
00:40:23only one of us is getting out of the corner.
00:40:25And HÃ¥konen, his world champion,
00:40:27he's kind of said,
00:40:28you take the corner, I'll go on later and win the race.
00:40:30And that seems to have set a tone for the other drivers
00:40:32to more or less, you know, keep with.
00:40:35Yes, he has this air about him,
00:40:37always very, very calm
00:40:38and does such a superb job at that.
00:40:40But don't forget,
00:40:41it's always much easier
00:40:42when you're world champion the previous two years.
00:40:44And when you have the best car.
00:40:45And you have the best car.
00:40:46And, of course, they didn't score any points,
00:40:48neither McLaren did in the last race in Australia.
00:40:51They really need to take some points
00:40:52back to Europe with them this weekend.
00:40:54Schumacher has lowered the fastest lap standard
00:40:57and we're told that Jean Alési has stopped on the course
00:41:00and that would put both Prosts out of the race.
00:41:02The fastest race lap last year was 1.18.4
00:41:06and the lap record is 1.18.3
00:41:08with Jacques Villeneuve in 97.
00:41:10But HÃ¥konen got it last year, 1.18.4.
00:41:14Jean Alési.
00:41:18So that's the end of both the Prost cars.
00:41:20What a disastrous season so far for the Prost team.
00:41:23Just shocking.
00:41:26Jean Alési, the elder statesman of Formula 1,
00:41:28has not finished a race.
00:41:30Alési is actually the only driver to drive
00:41:32at the modern Interlagos circuit.
00:41:34He certainly isn't getting any results for it either.
00:41:40There's the second place battle once again with Mika HÃ¥konen.
00:41:43Finding himself in an uncharacteristic position
00:41:46of being 12 seconds off the lead.
00:41:49And having a Ferrari right up his tailpipe.
00:41:54With Barrichello in third.
00:41:56Remember last year Rubens Barrichello and Stewart
00:41:58led 25 laps of this race.
00:42:02Very exciting time for him, for the crowds as well.
00:42:04And he really has stepped into, if that's the right word,
00:42:07Ed Senna's shoes here in Brazil.
00:42:09He's such a delightful person.
00:42:11It took him a couple of years to get over
00:42:13the terrible, disastrous death of Ed Senna
00:42:16who obviously was his idol and the whole of Brazil's idol.
00:42:18And here he is now becoming the idol of Brazil himself.

00:52:18despite that,
00:52:19so if the writing's on the wall for DC,
00:52:22he's not going to get Michael behind him
00:52:24unless Michael has to make two more stops,
00:52:26which is, I would have said, unlikely.
00:52:35So this far, only the Ferraris have made pit stops.

00:53:27When the deficit isn't that great,
00:53:28it's only something like 6, 7 seconds.

00:53:35Looks like he lost it under braking,
00:53:37and we need to see that again.
00:53:42This is where Hakkinen has to make the brake.

00:53:46so that Michael Schumacher doesn't get the speed up
00:53:48that he wants him to,
00:53:49doesn't catch up on that gap.
00:53:51Of course, nobody's gone this long on this surface.
00:53:53It's an abrasive surface,
00:53:54and they just don't know how long they can go on these tyres.
00:53:57Remember, the McLaren historically
00:53:59has always been a superior car on tyre wear
00:54:02than the Ferrari.
00:54:11Interesting that in each pit,
00:54:12in addition to all the data,
00:54:14they receive an in-car feed.
00:54:17We saw over Ron Dennis' shoulder,
00:54:19we saw the in-car feed from David Coulthard.
00:54:22They're in the pit.
00:54:29McLaren seeking their tenth Brazilian victory.
00:54:32They lead all manufacturers on the win list.
00:54:36But Hakkinen is only six seconds ahead of Schumacher,
00:54:39and Schumacher's running.
00:54:40Well, the last lap was a bit slower than Hakkinen's.
00:54:42The previous one was a bit quicker,
00:54:44so Hakkinen is putting his foot down now as he needs to.
00:54:46He dared let Schumacher catch up that time.
00:54:48He puts too much pressure on the pit crew.
00:54:50Remember, when Hakkinen goes in,
00:54:52he's got to put more fuel on than Schumacher did
00:54:55because he's running the one-stop strategy.
00:55:00The other thing, too,
00:55:01that we haven't been talking about much tonight,
00:55:03we don't know that much about it,
00:55:05but you'll notice with Schumacher's helmet,
00:55:06he has, and Barry Kello's,
00:55:07they have a lump on the bottom right-hand corner
00:55:10of the helmet, lower down.
00:55:11And this is where we believe,
00:55:13and we're pretty sure about this,
00:55:14they have a heads-up display on their helmet.
00:55:16So they have no instruments at all on the dashboard.
00:55:19They just have buttons on the wheel
00:55:21and heads-up display on their helmet
00:55:22giving them all the info.
00:55:25Tomika Hakkinen leads from Michael Schumacher at 25 laps,
00:55:30clears the gap, and it's increasing, 8.6 seconds.

01:46:04You wouldn't believe Michael had just finished a Grand Prix in the lead. The others looked so exhausted, but he just shows when you're driving a good car and when you're driving a hard car to drive.
01:46:14And a little tape here of Michael climbing out and saluting his Ferrari team.
01:46:20Yeah, they've done a wonderful job. Remember, they had to rebuild his car overnight after the chassis got cracked when he went off the road in qualifying yesterday.
01:46:28So, all those red flags they brought for Rubens Barrichello did finally get a workout, as there you see Michael Schumacher taking the chequered flag.
01:46:35The white car on the left of your screen is brother Ralf, and just behind, Jenson Button, who were each just barely a lap down at the finish.
01:46:43We heard that Mika Hakkinen's problem was gearbox, which put him out, hence the fact we never saw any smoke.
01:46:48Boy, are they happy. There's some of your Samba dancing.
01:46:52Great atmosphere here. South American atmosphere is unique, I have to say.
01:46:56And all that music makes it very infectious.
01:47:00A salute to the crowd from Michael.

01:47:06And now they're up on the podium. There's Pele to the left, greatest soccer player ever, and a man who certainly deserved inclusion in anybody's list of the 100 greatest athletes of the century.

01:47:26Special for Michael, because he's a football freak. He hasn't played anything since he broke his leg at Silverstone last year, but he is an absolute football freak.

01:50:59And Giancarlo Fisichella, who you'll remember talked to Peter Windsor in the pre-race, or after qualifying rather, and said he was quite encouraged by the power of the super-tech engine, and proved it today.

01:51:38The press was staying out very, very long at the second stop, so in my view it would have worked out.
01:51:44Now, about 15 laps in the end, you had a couple of very slow laps, I mean, I think four seconds slower than normal. Was there a small problem?
01:51:50We had a little problem towards the end, which we just took care, I mean, I guess it wasn't necessary to drive that slow, but, I mean, we had the lead and we had so much margin, so it just took it very easy.
01:52:04I was able to respond any time.
01:52:06And which bit of the car was giving the problem?
01:52:08Ask the team.
01:52:10Thanks, Michael.
01:52:11David, congratulations on your second place, getting six points to kick off your championship, but you seemed to have a very lonely race. Is that how it was?
01:52:17Yeah, no, it was, first of all, I didn't get my start quite right.
01:52:21I was all hooked up, ready to go, but the lights didn't change quite when I wanted them to, so, I mean, I hesitated and that's obviously where I lost some time there.
01:52:30And then, very early on, I lost third gear, so I did the whole race using only fourth and upwards.
01:52:36And, obviously, the first two sectors, or the first sector, I should say, you don't lose too much time, but middle sector and the last sector, I was very slow out the last corner.
01:52:44And, obviously, even though Rumi's made a mistake on the second lap or third lap, whenever it was, he was still easily able to tow past me on the straight, because I was slow onto it.
01:52:53Now, there's been a lot of discussion in the press over the last couple of weeks is, who's got the faster car, McLaren or Ferrari? Do you think we've seen today that Ferrari are quicker?
01:53:00Well, I think you need to, you know, why do we have to decide today? I think you need to look and wait at the end of the season, and then you can decide.
01:53:09People are so impatient today, you know, and people just want, want, want.
01:53:12But are you happy with the performance of the car today, considering?
01:53:15No, I'm not, because I lost the gear, and to get the maximum out of the car, you need to have all the gears, you know.
01:53:23To not use third and second for the race is just not at all a quick way to drive, and I lost the radio as well, so it meant that I couldn't relay the information to the team.
01:53:32I had to pay attention.
01:53:33I mean, it was better.
01:53:34Yeah, it was better. I had to pay attention, obviously, for the board very closely to make sure I got my stop right.
01:53:40So all in all, it was a very difficult race, but to get six points out of this sort of situation, I have to say I'm quite happy with,
01:53:47because I could feel fourth starting to go about 20 laps from the end, and then I just started to be very careful with the downchanges and the RPMs at which I was using it.
01:53:57And so from that point of view, I'm happy I was able to get the car home.
01:54:00I mean, do you know what happened to your teammate? Do you know what happened to Micah?
01:54:04Well, as I mentioned a few minutes ago, I don't have the radio, so I haven't had a chance since coming out of the car and going to the podium and coming here.
01:54:09So, no, I don't.
01:54:11Thanks, David. Giancarlo, Renault took over the team just a few days ago, and you're suddenly on the podium.
01:54:16You must be delighted.
01:54:17Yeah, sure. It's a great result.
01:54:19I'm very pleased for this third place.
01:54:22It was my target, to be honest.
01:54:25Already yesterday I understood the possibility to get on the podium.
01:54:29So, I would like to say thank you very much to the Benetton team and help to have a better car even in the future.
01:54:38And for that, I am very confident.
01:54:41Now, you ran a very, very long first stint, 50 laps.
01:54:44What were the tactics behind that?
01:54:46Yes, at the beginning I was in trouble because the car was very difficult to drive with a lot of fuel.
01:54:54It was so much heavy, and there was a lot on the steering, and sometimes even snap over steering.
01:55:00But then after 15, 20 laps, there was a very good behaviour, and I pushed so hard, and I gained my third place for that.

01:55:11Michael, for the last six years, the winner of this Grand Prix has gone on to win the World Championship.

01:55:18I mean, I was told that who wins the first race, like Melbourne, who is winning the championship.

01:55:26So, out of your prediction, I can go home and don't need to drive the rest of the year, I guess.
01:55:32So, I don't care, honestly, about the statistics, because they're worth, obviously, not very much.

01:56:42Yeah, I mean, we made definitely some improvements to our start strategy.
01:56:46I think we got a hand on that.
01:56:49And I almost was able to catch Mika straight away.
01:56:54But I didn't want to take too much risk.
01:56:56And, obviously, he was not too keen to let me by.
01:56:58Which, luckily, through our strategy, we were able to do that right after the first lap.
01:57:05It was quite entertaining.
01:57:06I mean, it doesn't happen too often that you have between the leaders a real fight and overtaking.
01:57:11So, I enjoyed that. It was a long time ago.
01:57:14Talking about your strategy, you came in for your first pit stop just as you hit the traffic.
01:57:18Was that a coincidence or was that a change of strategy?
01:57:21It was a change of strategy, honestly, yeah.
01:57:24I mean, we wanted to use the situation.
01:57:26And I think it worked fairly well.
01:57:29We had a bit of vibration in the second turn.
01:57:33The tyre had turned again, like in Melbourne, and the rim caused a little bit of upset to the car.
01:57:40It wasn't handling as perfect.
01:57:42But we were prepared for staying out very, very long at the second stop.
01:57:46So, in my view, it would have worked out.
01:57:49Now, about 15 laps in the end, you had a couple of very slow laps.
01:57:52I mean, I think four seconds to go.
01:57:54So, those were the answers we missed.
01:57:56Let's have a look here at some of the highlights.
01:57:58Start of the race.
01:57:59You see, Coulthard, as he said, didn't get off the grid well.
01:58:02Schumacher up for second.
01:58:04And then, Kips Haakonen for the lead.
01:58:07Marichello comes up to run up in second.
01:58:11And Eddie Irvine was running in the points until he spun off, damaging his Jaguar.
01:58:17So, it was Michael Schumacher for the second week in a row.

01:58:28Hours after the race was completed, the results have been changed due to the disqualification of David Coulthard, who finished second in the race.
01:58:37The FIA technical delegate stated that following the race, Coulthard's car was checked for bodywork conformity
01:58:43and found that the front wing was only 43 millimeters instead of 50 millimeters.
01:58:49So, these are now the official results, subject to appeal by Coulthard's team, West McLaren Mercedes.
