Customs seizes RM32,000 worth of cigarettes falsely declared as clothing at KLIA

The Customs Department seized 322,000 cigarettes during a raid at the KLIA Cargo Free Commercial Zone on July 9.

During a press conference on Wednesday (Aug 14), Central Zone Customs assistant director-general Norlela Ismail said the seized goods, valued at RM32,000 with duties and taxes amounting to RM215,740, were falsely declared as clothing.

00:00This case was brought to us on the 9th of July.
00:03The police force, Unit 3, KLIA,
00:07carried out an investigation on four trade pallets
00:12that contained 92 master cases.
00:18Of those, 46 master cases contained white smoke.
00:25The other 46 master cases contained clothes.
00:28The investigation was carried out in Mas Kago,
00:33the free trade zone of KLIA.
00:36As a result of the investigation,
00:38we found that the smoke was imported without a valid permit.
00:44The importer also used the method of delivering the smoke through Kago
00:50as well as accepting the trade as a government and etc.
00:54The quantity of the smoke was 322,000 pieces of smoke
01:03worth 32,000 ringgit
01:07while the duty and interest amounted to 215,740 ringgit.
01:14This case is still under investigation.
01:19The operating mode was to import the white smoke without a valid permit,
01:25and to declare the trade as a government and etc.
01:29in the flight document, the airway bill,
01:32in order to bribe the authorities.
01:35The smoke was listed in the Customs Ordinance
01:39on the Prohibition of Import of 20-23,
01:41Schedule 3, Section 1,
01:44where the importation of the prohibited goods
01:46requires a permit to import when imported to Malaysia.
01:50This case was investigated under Section 135, 1A, Customs Act, 1957.
01:57Was the white smoke used for transit or for trade in Malaysia?
02:02The white smoke was used for transit from Korea to Malaysia
02:07and for transit to Australia, Melbourne.
02:12The mistake here is that they didn't declare the smoke,
02:15they declared it as a garment.
02:17Garment and etc. means clothing.
02:19But there was clothing, half clothing and half smoke.
