The famous Latham's Coffee Renoir

00:00Preston Cake Institution, Latham's of Broughton, is set to go into liquidation, so I wanted
00:05to see if I could get hold of one of its famous coffee Renoirs before it was too late.
00:12Okay so this is the coffee Renoir that I bought this morning, it was £2.30, she's wrapped
00:17it in a bag, she did ask me whether it was okay in a bag and I said yes, but now I'm
00:23slightly concerned that it's all going to have stuck, but let's see.
00:29Here it is in all of its glory, this is the famous coffee Renoir that everyone seems to
00:34love from Latham's. I've had, I'm not going to lie, I've had quite a few of these over
00:38the years, I've not had one for ages though, so I'm hoping that it's still as good as it
00:44always was, although I have seen on social media some people talking about a change maybe
00:50in quality over the recent times, we'll see, let's have a look at it. This is a small one,
00:57it was £2.30, you could buy a larger one for £2.70, and I think I saw a coffee Renoir
01:05Eclair, I didn't go for that, just went for the normal one but the smaller one. It looks
01:11pretty much the same, although I think, correct me if I'm wrong, but there used to be some
01:16kind of almond chippings or little bits of nuts on the top, but this one has got, it
01:24looks like a bit of a fake coffee bean, I think that's chocolate, although I'll tell
01:28you, coffee, I'll tell you, coffee flavoured icing on the top, it's got some confectioners
01:35custard in the choux pastry and cream, so what I'll do is I'll just open it up and let
01:41you see the inside of it and then I'll do a taste test. Right, so this is, I've just
01:48opened it in half, this is the inside, so cream, as I mentioned before, and underneath
01:54the cream, difficult to do when you're holding a camera, is the confectioners custard which
01:59it's known for. Now I'm just going to say, very early doors, that I don't think there's
02:05as much custard in there as there used to be, it used to be like overflowing, but let's
02:10see when I eat it if I think the proportions are correct. Right, this is the mess that
02:16I've made having a bite, it is messy to eat, it's always been messy to eat, what I can
02:22say is that it's still absolutely delicious, it's, the coffee taste is just right with
02:30the sweetness in the icing, I said that I didn't think there was as much custard in
02:36it as there used to be, I still don't, I still think there used to be more custard, but it's
02:42really nice, it is a coffee Renoir, it still has that taste, the custard is nice and light,
02:49it's not rubbery, very fresh, I don't know when it's been made but it tastes really fresh,
02:55yeah really nice, delicious, is this my last coffee Renoir from Latham's? I don't know,
03:00I hope it's not.
