This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the weekend 22/08/2024. Once Storm Lilian clears into the North Sea, the weather will slowly but surely improve for most throughout this Bank Holiday weekend. However sunshine will still be limited and it’s not going to be particularly warm for many of us, next week there are signs of more widespread settled weather arriving in time for the end of summer. Bringing you this weekend’s weather forecast is Annie Shuttleworth.

00:00Hello. There will be a bit of an improvement to the weather for many of us for this bank
00:04holiday weekend, but it is going to be quite a slow process. Now, Storm Lillian has brought
00:10a very unsettled end to the week across many northern areas, and this active area of the
00:15jet stream will do its work to drive Storm Lillian up into the North Sea throughout Friday
00:20and ahead of the weekend. But we've still got a pretty active area of the jet stream,
00:25and where we are to the north of that, we'll still have some pretty heavy showers coming
00:29in throughout Saturday. And to the south, notice the weather front. That's the rainfall
00:33from Friday returning to southern areas for Saturday morning. So pretty wet start is likely
00:39for many southern areas of England in particular, particularly the southeast, where the rain
00:44may linger towards lunchtime. And once it does clear, there is a risk of some pretty
00:48heavy and possibly thundery showers breaking out. Now, away from this area to the north
00:53and west across Northern Ireland and Scotland, again, quite a few showers breaking out. We've
00:57got a northwesterly wind as well, so it's not going to be a very warm feeling day wherever
01:02you are on Saturday. Across the north and west, temperatures around the mid-teens in
01:06the south and east, 20 or 21 degrees at best, but quite widely, I think, will be in the
01:11teens. And compared to average, the temperatures will be below par for this time of the year
01:17across the board. But it's particularly across the south and east where that rain will linger
01:21through much of the morning, where it's going to be quite a cool feeling day. Now, that
01:25wet weather front will clear away to the east by Saturday evening. And behind it, we've
01:29still got low pressure generally in charge to the north, a fairly cool air mass as well.
01:34So it's going to be a fairly cool feeling day on Sunday, but I think generally a drier
01:39day than Saturday. And there will be more in the way of sunshine across eastern areas
01:44of England in particular. I think the sunshine will be more limited as we head into the afternoon.
01:48That's because the next area of wet weather will spread into parts of Northern Ireland
01:52and Scotland through Sunday afternoon. The wet weather is not looking as significant
01:57as anything we'll have seen through Friday and some of those showers through Saturday.
02:01But I think there could still be some fairly brisk winds in there. So temperatures still
02:05limited to the mid-teens for many areas of Northern Ireland and Scotland. While we hold
02:09on to a bit more sunshine across eastern areas of England, we could see temperatures climbing
02:13towards 23 or 24 degrees. So definitely a slightly warmer feeling day for some of us
02:18on Sunday, but not a day of water wall sunshine at all. Now, as we head through Sunday night
02:25and into Monday, we head into a bank holiday for some areas of the UK. There is a weather
02:30front arriving across northwestern areas into Northern Ireland and Scotland through the
02:33day. But elsewhere, we've got fairly brisk winds, but there are southwesterly wind through
02:37Monday. So that does mean it will feel that much warmer. There will also be some sunshine,
02:42particularly for eastern areas where we're more protected from the southwesterly wind.
02:47And there will be some sunshine through the morning. However, across the west, rainfall
02:51will arrive later on in the afternoon. There is some uncertainty with exactly how quickly
02:56this rain will move in. I think it's more likely actually moves in a little later than
03:00these graphics show. So it could stay a bit drier for longer for parts of Wales, the southwest
03:05and some northwestern areas of England. But for Northern Ireland and much of Scotland,
03:09it will likely turn much wetter through the rest of the day. But the south and east should
03:13stay clear of the rain through much of the bank holiday weekend. And it will feel fairly
03:19warm in the sunshine as well. Temperatures are climbing towards the mid-20s across the
03:23south and east for some areas on Monday. Across the north and west, though, where the rain
03:27does arrive, we'll still be closer to those mid-teens. But I think the warmest day of
03:32the weekend is expected on Monday. Things are expected to improve even more for some
03:38of us into next week. But you can find more details about all of that on our YouTube channel.
03:42See you again soon. Bye bye.
