00:00Oh there's one right there. It's not one, it's actually two. It's a mother and a baby.
00:12Is that not the cutest thing you've ever seen? You know you can talk about this stuff but
00:19when you physically see it and you realise that she has had to cross this road to get
00:25to this tree, that puts her in grave danger. One of the things that I'm realising is the
00:32greatest threat to koalas is habitat fragmentation and you can see these koalas are confined
00:37to these little rows of trees. This used to historically be this huge forest and now it's
00:44just a few little trees, some little hedgerows and that's what the koalas have to live in
00:49because that's where their food is. Friends of the Koala operate a 24-hour hotline which
00:55then in turn leads to us being able to capture and treat injured or diseased animals.
01:02So we've got this potentially sick koala in the bottom branch of this tree here and we're
01:08about to set up a koala trap. I've got no idea how this works but it's some pretty interesting
01:12gear getting floated here. Should I take this over there? Yeah, you take that.
01:30So we put the core flute around the tree so it's an enclosure. I always place the trap just offset
01:38from where I can see their scratches on the tree because that's where they come down. If you have
01:45the trap where they come down then they just sort of come down, see the light and yeah.
01:54We also set up a camera that monitors any movements and that camera alerts us as to the
02:00koala going into the trap. The camera that we set up is connected to our phones and it will send us
02:07a message instantly if a koala goes into the trap so that we can react really quickly and get this
02:13koala and process it. So this process can take a few hours, it can take a few days,
02:20depends on the koala really and the type of tree that it is in.
