00:00Now it's back to the treatment room.
00:03Dr. Tara has asked me to assist her team while they do a final exam on a 7-month-old sloth
00:08that's coming out of quarantine.
00:10Sloths are apparently extremely food-oriented, so my job is to feed him and distract him
00:15so she's able to perform the exam without stressing him out.
00:19You just want more little fellow, look at that.
00:29That giant pair of tweezers is not edible.
00:36You know, when you look at animals like this, when you get this close and you're able to
00:39handle them and really see them, I mean, they're so unique, they're so amazing.
00:45I mean, just the adaptation of wildlife to the different environments around the planet,
00:48it's just, it's always astounding.
00:51The things that can be learned from an animal in captivity, particularly a very unique animal
00:56in captivity, are things that can transcend and end up having a huge influence on the
01:00conservation of that species.
01:03So Ivan, you can keep feeding and I'm going to start the exam.
01:06Perfect.
01:07Here we go.
01:08He's going to keep eating as long as I keep feeding.
01:09I've got that feeling.
01:10Yeah, I'm just going to lean over here.
01:13What are you looking at there?
01:14I am using a fancy tool to look inside of his eyes, so I'm going to found the scope.
01:21So then I'm going to start to feel him and you can keep feeding him, Ivan.
01:25So that's probably an important time to do that.
01:31He's going to be a little wiggle worm, which is expected, while I get a chance to finally
01:38feel him for the first time.
01:40What are you feeling for?
01:42I like to feel around the skin, make sure there's no lumps and bumps.
01:47And then I like to feel their abdomen, make sure everything is okay there.
01:51Meanwhile, I'm also looking at other areas.
01:54I'm looking at the foot pads, looking at the nails.
01:58So it's kind of a comprehensive visual and physical exam.
02:06And I'm going to go ahead and listen to his heart.
02:11There we go.
02:15It's amazing how focused he is on food.
02:17He is.
02:19Heart rate is 140.
02:22Ivan, you're doing a terrific job.
02:25I don't know if I've ever fed anything this speed.
02:28Maybe my own children.
