00:42Of course, after that last moto, he has a bit of redemption to do.
00:45I was just talking to his dad, Brian Degan, I said, what were some of the changes you
00:49guys made?
00:50He said, it is a big swing for Hayden for this moto.
00:53We had put a suspension in that was just a little too stiff for this track.
00:57He was totally uncomfortable.
00:58They said they threw the kitchen sink at it, and Hayden Degan basically has a completely
01:02new setup for this moto to see if, you know what, let's get back up on the top of the
01:06box.
01:07That's the goal.
01:08He's earned the right to take chances.
01:09He already has the title wrapped up.
01:10That's why Degan is running the number one today.
01:12I think he's been getting smelling salts before the motos to get fired up.
01:17That's what you saw him doing there with his mechanic, Brent Duffy.
01:21So Bial all the way on the inside.
01:23Degan all the way on the outside.
01:25The way it played out in moto one, those gates ended up about equal.
01:29Not sure if it will work that way now, an hour and a half later.
01:31I wonder if the middle has dried out a bit.
01:34It might be quicker.

01:39Can he hold it?
01:40Roderick going down in the middle, but Tom Bial got a great jump on the inside, executed

01:54Looks like Chance Hymus slides up into second place.
01:57And Max Anstey is the Yamaha with him, Roderick Francisco on the 34, a good start as well.

02:13It was Pierce Brown who was down in that first turn that you caught there, James Hymus looking
02:23for lines to get around Bial.
02:26Tom going on the outside.
02:27They put a little bit of water down, but not too much.
02:29He's got a pretty good racetrack.
02:31The only place they have to be careful is right here on some of these faces.
02:34Looks like Chance wants to get up the inside of Tom to have the momentum, get all the way
02:39down.
02:40Hymus bounced off the top of that inside, not able to complete the pass.
02:46DeFrancisco, though, is on the move, up to third.

02:52Just like we saw Jordan Smith in that first moto, maybe Roderick D. Can do the same thing,
02:56hang on with these guys and get some confidence and see what it's like.
02:59You got Hayden Degan in the sixth spot right up there, right behind R.J., so a lot better
03:04start for him.
03:06DeFrancisco and his teammate Brown jumping back to supercross this week to prepare for
03:11the SMX playoffs.
03:12Oh, Degan now challenging Hempshire.
03:13He actually had that pass made and then he got cross-routed coming out, which allowed
03:19R.J. To get back, so Hayden's probably riding with a sense of purpose as he scrubs.
03:24Is he going to get a BOGO special, get on the inside?
03:28Not quite.
03:29In fact, Hempshire might get him back around the outside.
03:32Yeah, Hempshire sends it and makes it happen.
03:35R.J., that was a nice move by him not following, like Hayden had that pass and got caught up
03:40behind his teammate.
03:41A lot of action going on.
03:44A furious first lap here, James.
03:47Degan and Hempshire wheel to wheel again.
03:49Here's scrub.
03:52And I think he made that pass.
03:55Back to the lead.
03:56Hymus working the outside of this start straight.
03:58If he squares him up, get on the inside, no, nice move by Tom.

04:02Now this is that split lane section, inside, outside.
04:08This might work for Hymus.

04:13Like Tom jumping out like that.
04:16Almost made that section a double.
04:18This is what we saw with Chance in the first moto.
04:20Really aggressive on the opening few laps.
04:22I think he probably knows Tom will be out.
04:24Once he gets settled in, he might do what he did in the first moto and run away.
04:29Chance, once he's shot, got to get in front of this guy.
04:32He's definitely trying.
04:34Like how the lines have developed.
04:35You're seeing a few more variations inside, outside early in this moto.
04:39San Francisco hanging tough in third.
04:43They battle again for the lead.
04:45Send it to Katie with more on Hymus.
04:48Yeah, talking to him right before this moto, he said he was going to work on executing
04:52that start.
04:53Check.
04:54But he said he's also battling some bike setup.
04:56They did make some changes between the motos, but he just wanted to get a little bit more
05:00comfortable on this bike, in which case we're seeing that for him.
05:03J.T.?
05:04Yeah, just watching some of the lines take shape here and you're seeing them ride the
05:07very edges of the racetrack because the middle has just gotten rougher and rougher.
05:11We started out with a very soft racetrack, so that's going to get rough.
05:15Now you see them searching for lines going all the way on the edges.
05:19You see Hymus all the way on the outside, following that all the way around, and mostly
05:22that's just to avoid the bumps, which will really pay off later in the moto when these
05:26guys start to fatigue a little bit.
05:27Yeah, that's by design, J.T.
05:29We were down there talking to Jeff Russell and the track builders, and, James, what they
05:31said is, oh, as Hymus almost throws it away, they purposely put, oh, kitchen.
05:37Well, that's going to be the end of the overall win streak.
05:39Second in moto one, winner of the last race, down.
05:44Maybe out of this moto.
05:45Oh, bummer.
05:46Yeah, he didn't look like he was in too much of a rush.
05:48Trying to figure out where that was, but it looks like a high speed.
05:52Now you're seeing Hayden Deegan got past R.J.
05:54And his teammate.
05:55Now trying to do the same thing to Ryder D.
05:59As he does.
06:00Oh, Deegan with a vengeance right now.
06:02I was saying they purposely built some more sawdust and watered heavily on the inside
06:07and left the outside drier, hoping that would speed the outside up.
06:11Yeah, I mean, they played out.
06:12They definitely have two different souls on this racetrack.
06:15The only part is, if it's not into the ground deep enough, you have a hard base, and I think
06:20these guys are getting caught out by soft on the top and really hard on the bottom and
06:24losing the rear and front end.
06:26They're pushing right now, Deegan.
06:29See if he can keep making moves.
06:30He's going to get into this battle if he does.
06:34Same thing happened to first moto.
06:35Those guys were all over Tom.
06:38He got clear a couple of laps, and now he's starting to pull away, and I think Hayden
06:41senses that.
06:42He's going to be ultra-aggressive trying to get around his cooking teammate and chance
06:45Hymus.
06:46Kitchin, if he cannot get up into the points of this moto, might give up second in the
06:51championship to Vial.
06:55But we'll see if Kitchin gets back up to race pace.
06:58Vial is putting the hammer down.
06:59Yeah, I like Tom's lines, too, and I think what's allowing him to have that pace is,
07:04the difference is, once he's out front, he's running these outside lines, so he's carrying
07:08a lot more momentum than these guys, it seems like.
07:11He's just opening up the corners, as we were talking about in the 450 class.
07:15You can't do that when you have guys right on you.
07:17You got to keep blocking it, so it seems like when Tom gets that gap, he's able to pull
07:20away from these guys because of that.
07:23Kitchin is back going, but he is in 36th, but back up to speed.
07:27We'll see if he can get into the top 21, where they pay points.

08:14Like that inside line from Hayden, and I noticed the last couple laps he's been launching out
08:19of this.
08:20He thought a little bit better than that.
08:21It was pretty hard hits, but Hayden definitely has a pretty good rhythm on this front part
08:26of the racetrack.
08:27Seems like he's able to close in on these guys as chance is either closing in on Tom
08:31or just keeping that gap the same, but I like it, and Hayden's following him up there as
08:35well.
08:36You've got Defrancesco and Hempshire, fourth, fifth, Bastropoulos, sixth, Anstey, Roxon,
08:43Schock who didn't finish the first moto is ninth, and Jordan Smith podium in moto one
08:47tenth right now.

08:49We see Hayden Deegan make a mistake there, but I was very sure that we were going to
08:54see Hayden Deegan show up and bring it in the second moto, but when you watch Hayden
08:58Deegan ride, it's like he takes everything that everyone does or says personally.
09:02He races like it's personal, and you're seeing that effort.
09:05That first moto didn't go to plan.
09:07He was way back, much further back than he wanted to be, but he knows he won this championship,
09:11and he wants to show, just like James Stewart in that first moto, he doesn't want to give
09:14anybody any confidence, and he wants to show them exactly why he has that yellow number
09:19one on the front number plate.
09:21Absolutely.
09:22I always said Hayden rides like a guy who comes from nothing.
09:26Pretty much if he doesn't win this race, he's not going to eat tonight, and that's how he
09:29attacks it, and every time he's out there, he just has that attitude, and to me, besides
09:35the talent and what he's doing and obviously all the race wins, that's what makes me impressed
09:39about this kid, because just to have that fight, as you heard him last weekend for that
09:44championship, yeah, you got the biggest championship of your career on the line, but, yeah, you
09:48just want to dominate these guys, and it looks like he's going up to inside of chance.
09:54Got it.
09:55Nice move.
09:56Kind of caught chance out.
09:59Not sure of the exchange on that big Godzilla uphill.
10:02I think they all had a flag they had to slow down for, and that really allowed the pack
10:06to tighten up.

10:08That was the danger zone.
10:10I thought I saw that was the last lap.
10:13Just jumping four, five, six, all these numbers.

10:19Well, Hymus doesn't care.
10:20He's going back after him.
10:21Meanwhile, at the bottom, another battle there for fifth.
10:24Master pool and Hampshire duking it out, and Vial trying to get away.

10:30This is great racing at Ironman.
10:35Hymus, not impressed with that move.
10:41He wants to get Deegan back.
10:43You know this is personal with chance.
10:45This is the first time these guys have been up front together, have a chance to build
10:48a race.
10:49So I suspect chance is going to be throwing all the haymakers out here, because this is
10:53last chance before we go into the playoffs, and he's just got a great chance of defeating
10:59Hayden over that championship, over these next playoff rounds, but it starts today.

11:06That's what's so cool about this.
11:07Pro motocross is done, but playoffs begin in two weeks, so everybody has something to
11:11strive for.
11:12I think chance found a great line right there going on the outside.
11:15He made a mistake.
11:16I don't know if he meant to go out there, but he closed in a lot of time on Hayden.
11:20Really smooth.
11:21Yeah.
11:22You can see chance trying to get up the inside of him.
11:26Another inside for Hymus.

11:29He's close, though.

11:31It's going to give chance a lot of confidence, too, just being able to hang in here.

11:44Hymus third.
11:45As they battle here at pro motocross at Ironman, is that going to allow him to be able to pull
11:49away a little bit?
11:50I don't know if it allows.
11:53Tom's either going to pull away or he's not.
11:54I don't think it really matters with these guys.
11:56He's got a pretty good pace, but I do believe if Hayden catches him, it's going to make
12:01Tom have to change his lines and be more defensive, and in that case, then I think Hayden and
12:05all these guys got a better shot, but yeah, that's what Tom's doing on the outside, railing
12:12these corners, and here's the, what do you call it, the quint?
12:14It could be.
12:15Is it a five?
12:22That wasn't quite it.
12:23We're going to check in with Ken Roxy.
12:24He didn't do the big jump that time.
12:26Roxy, jumping under the 250 today.
12:30First time since 2013 for the veteran out of Germany to race this class.
12:34He is in sixth place now.
12:36Yeah.
12:37It's going to be a tough moto for Ken unless he gets somebody in front of him because how
12:42he finished that second, that first moto, not having a rabbit to chase, it's going to
12:46be tough.
12:47Yeah.
12:48It was good for about half of the first moto, then started dropping back, sending it back
12:53to Katie.
12:54You know, Katie was one of those guys who's only had four or five days on this 250, this
12:59particular 250, but I want to make a note here, and something that we kind of all are
13:03chuckling about earlier in the week, Hayden Deegan was seven years old the last time Kenny
13:08Roxon was on a 250 back in 2013, and Kenny made a note to say, like, it's pretty cool
13:13that I've had the opportunity to race the past generation, the legends of the sport,
13:17but also I'm getting to race this younger generation.
13:20It's all for fun, as Kenny said, and obviously, hopefully, running in sixth, he thought maybe
13:26a top eight would be good, but hopefully he's pretty happy with the sixth right now not
13:29having been on this bike.
13:30I'm sure he is.
13:31I'm sure he is, and he realized these boys are crazy out here, these young millennials
13:35out here, but Kenny's doing a great job.
13:38I'm sure it's going to help him in the 450 once he comes back a couple weeks here in
13:43the first playoff race.
13:45So let's check the gap now between the leader, V.L., and Deegan, who has pulled clear just
13:51a bit from Hymus.
13:53There it is, and there's third.
13:55Yeah, and shout out to Roderick D. He's right behind these guys, so he hasn't lost too much
14:00time as Hayden takes a look back.
14:03This definitely is a next generation to the point K.D.'s making about Hymus, Deegan and
14:09deep Francisco.
14:10Really only about two years of pro experience for each of those three, and V.L. Is new over
14:16here as a two-time champion coming out of Europe.
14:19We asked V.L. Yesterday to assess his 2024 season.
14:24Yeah, I'd like to say the Supercross Championships was really nice, obviously.
14:30I think it's the biggest 250 championships.
14:34I'm a little bit disappointed with the outdoor.
14:35I did a lot of up and downs, and I had some crashes that I think I could have managed
14:42another way.
14:43But yeah, no, the Supercross was nice, and I think I will be really good and ready for
14:49next year.
14:50I kind of struggled a little bit with some crashes this year, and hopefully next year
14:54I should be good.
14:57Well, here's a chance to prove what he can do next year, try to hold off Deegan this
15:01year.
15:02Yeah, I think Tom's going to be the year of what ifs.
15:06There's a bunch of races where he's been up front and had a chance to win or at least
15:10be on the podium that he threw away himself.
15:12He's riding good as he has been all year, but this is the battle that we thought we
15:17would continue to see after the hang town and how this year started off.
15:22To me, it seems like Tom's a lot quicker on this part of the racetrack than Hayden.
15:25I think some of these insides, Tom's just got a better flowing line, better flow through
15:31this section.
15:32We'll see if Hayden picks up on that or Tom gets away from him.
15:38There's that hard base you were mentioning underneath the dirt.
15:40You can see it.
15:41Shiny stuff.
15:42But what Tom's doing, as I was mentioning in the 450 class, those inside lines, by just
15:47jumping out a little bit, he's jumping over that hard part.
15:51Even if he lands in it, he's not accelerating like these other guys.
15:54You just saw Hayden behind him having a hit and you saw how much that bike was spinning
15:58up.
15:59So Tom, by just being a little bit more open and keeping the momentum up is allowing him
16:02to get away on this side of the racetrack.
16:10You can see Hymus still there in third, keeping it interesting.
16:15Tom missed that tabletop.
16:17Will that allow Deegan to close up Matt?
16:22Great way to end the season to have a battle like this between two of the best.
16:28And you know they want it so bad.
16:30Fiala doesn't need to beat Deegan to win the overall, but there's no way he wants Deegan
16:34to pass him.

35:51This is the scene last year, hayden degan in dramatic fashion didn't get the finish
35:56he wanted in the first moto in los angeles, but pulled it off to win the world championship
36:01in the second moto in l.A. Just edged out joe scimota.
36:07And we expect that kind of drama again when the playoffs begin in two weeks.
36:16And we are on to the final lap of the season.
36:18And it's going to end in symbolic fashion as degan looks to get the moto win.
36:23It won't be the overall today.
36:24It actually won't even be on the overall podium.
36:27Only going to be fourth.
36:29You can start thinking like last year with this motocross series and then obviously having
36:35the playoffs, what is done for this kid because he would end up motocross having some dnfs
36:41and, you know, a bad finish.
36:43But because we have the playoff format, he was able to get in there and win this title.
36:47And ever since then, this kid has been rolling.
36:48He didn't have the supercross season he wanted, but he was right there.
36:52And then, of course, when he gets to the motocross, it shows you having these playoffs
36:56and what it's allowed hayden to do by winning that title, now you're getting a kid that's
37:00on a roll.
37:01And who knows where this boat might stop.
