00:00The word qabit comes from the root qa, ba, da and it means to grasp something, to grip
00:08something tight and to seize. From these meanings it implies other things. For
00:14example when you grasp and grip something tight it means you have
00:19complete control and authority over it. When someone receives their wages we say
00:25qabad his wages because he has grasped the wages and he has complete control
00:30and authority to do what he wants with it. It also implies when you grasp and
00:36grip something tight you constrict it, you withhold it, you shrink it or you
00:41decrease it. Allah is called al qabit. He is the one that has complete control and
00:47authority over creation. He is the one that has the wisdom to decide when to
00:52withhold or decrease. The Holy Qur'an says
01:23You probably would like to eat ice cream and candy for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
01:28But our parents withhold and stop us to protect us because they know the damage
01:33it will cause and they know what is best for you. Now imagine you wanted
01:37something really bad and couldn't get it. Allah chooses whether to withhold it or
01:42to give it to you right now because he knows what's best for you. Allah may be
01:47doing this to protect you or to test you. Just as Allah is al qabit. He has the
01:54wisdom to decide when to withhold or decrease something. He is also al basit.
02:00The one that has the wisdom to decide when to extend or increase something.
02:05Allah says in the Qur'an and Allah makes one sustenance decrease or increase.
02:12These two names usually go together but this will be explained in the next lesson.
