00:13Starring Chuck Connors
00:15Mary, good afternoon.
00:37There's nothing good about this afternoon, Marshal.
00:39And I'm beginning to believe there's little good about this town either, or the people
00:43in it.
00:44They have pretty strong words.
00:45And well they should be, cowboy.
00:48I've never seen the likes of it.
00:50I've been working my fingers to the bone for over a week trying to get it ready to open.
00:54And do you think I can get anybody in this town to help me?
00:57I cannot.
00:58They're all too busy.
00:59Well, now that folks know the railroad's coming through, they've probably got their own plans
01:02to make.
01:03Oh, I'm sure they do.
01:04And if that was the real reason, I'd have no quarrel with them at all.
01:08Just what do you think is the real reason?
01:10You'll know perfectly well.
01:12It's because I knew about the railroad and took advantage of my information.
01:15Oh, you mean like buying the store and the hotel and all those other properties at bargain
01:20prices?
01:21That was business.
01:22I certainly wasn't going to wait for the prices to go up.
01:24True, but most people still think you tricked them.
01:27Now, that can happen in a small town.
01:29You're just going to have to give them time to get over it.
01:32And being angry certainly isn't going to help any.
01:35Angry is it?
01:36It's them that are angry.
01:38And as for time, that I haven't got.
01:40Every minute that hotel is closed, I'm losing money.
01:42And with my girls coming in, I can't...
01:44Did you say girls?
01:45I did.
01:46Girls.
01:47They'll be here on the stage from Denver this afternoon.
01:49In the hotel?
01:50Well, you don't expect me to run the whole place by myself, or do you?
01:59Girls?
02:00Girls.
02:03Girls.
02:13Mike, I'm staged here.
02:18I can smell it, it's coming.
02:26Peeta.
02:27Peeta.
02:30Oh, hey Micah, you better get Doc Burrage over here.
02:33I'll get him.
02:34What's the trouble?
02:36A passenger, real sick.
02:40Doc Burrage.
02:41Doc Burrage.
02:42Oh, Miss Lou, I just...
02:46Molly, what's wrong with her?
02:48I'm glad to see you, Miss Lou. I don't know what's wrong with Betty.
02:51She's sick. That's what's wrong with her.
02:53Come inside where you can lie down.
03:01Cowboy, give me a hand.
03:07I don't feel very well.
03:12There's a couch in the lobby.
03:15Come on.
03:40That's... That's fine.
03:43Come on.
03:52Out of the way.
03:58You better wait out here.
04:04When we started out, she couldn't eat. She just sort of ached all over.
04:09Get some cold water and a cloth. She's burning up.
04:14What do you think, Doc?
04:18I don't know yet.
04:30When did she get the fever?
04:32She must have had it when we left Denver. I know she wasn't feeling very well.
04:35Denver, huh? That's about two days ago.
04:39A good two days. They left early in the morning.
04:43Hey, you people get away from that door.
04:46Will you help me with this, Mark?
04:48Mark, don't touch that bag.
04:51You do as I tell you. And you people get out.
04:54Go on, leave. There's nothing here of interest to you at all. Go ahead.
04:57And driver, you take that stagecoach and the baggage out to the town and don't let anybody near it.
05:02Outside of town? What are you talking about?
05:04I haven't got time to argue with you. You do as I say.
05:07And Mark, you get Micah and tell him I want to talk to him outside.
05:13Hey, what's she got?
05:16Well, I ain't sure. Two days now of high fever and aching and the way she looks.
05:21If the fever breaks, we'll know. If it don't break, well, we'll know anyhow.
05:27Well, spell it out.
05:29Smallpox.
05:33Mark, you heard the doctor.
05:36You get Micah and you stay out of here.
05:42Go on, Mark.
05:45Yes, sir.
05:49Could you be wrong?
05:51Could be. But she's showing all the signs and I can't take any chances in a town like this.
05:56The town? Well, what about us?
05:58We were on the stage with her, all of us in here. We touched her.
06:01I know. That's why you're all in quarantine.
06:05Nobody comes into the hotel. Nobody leaves it.
06:08There should be no exceptions.
06:11You mean, maybe we got it right now?
06:14Well, maybe. If you never had it before, it don't come back the second time.
06:17What about you, Doc?
06:18Oh, a man my age, there ain't much I missed.
06:21I don't have to worry.
06:25You don't have to worry.
06:29Micah, Doc Burge wants to see you. Micah?
06:32What's wrong?
06:34The sick girl in the hotel, he thinks she's got smallpox.
06:38Good Lord.
06:39He doesn't want anybody inside the hotel, so he said for you to wait outside and he'd come out.
06:44What about the others, your father?
06:47I guess they'll have to stay there.
06:50That's the man on the stage.
06:52Yes, I'm afraid it is.
07:04Have you got a place downstairs you can move her somewhere?
07:07There's a workman's cot in the dining room.
07:10All right, take her in there. Get plenty of blankets. She's chilling.
07:16Where are you going, mister?
07:17I don't want to be anywhere near her.
07:19But we're all quarantined.
07:21You can stay here if you want, lady.
07:23Do whatever the Doc says.
07:25Me, I'm taking my chances someplace else.
07:28You'll take your chances with the rest of us.
07:30Nobody gives me orders. Nobody!
07:32My friend, you've been exposed to smallpox.
07:35If you've never had it, your chances of getting it are very good.
07:38Would you like for me to describe what it's like?
07:41It ain't a pretty picture. Not pretty at all.
07:43I'm not staying here and make sure I get it.
07:48Don't move! I said don't move!
07:50Now raise your hands.
07:52Take his gun, Lucas.
07:56All right, Coyle. Turn around.
08:00You know my name.
08:01I know your name.
08:03You kind of dropped out of sight for a while, didn't you?
08:05Lucas, this here's Lee Coyle. He's wanted back in Kansas.
08:08Two murder charges.
08:10Now come on out here.
08:11Let him be, Michael.
08:13This man's under arrest, Doc.
08:15He's also under quarantine.
08:16But you heard the marshal. He's wanted for murder.
08:19Miss Mallory.
08:20Looks to me like you people got yourselves a little problem.
08:22Nothing we can't handle, mister.
08:24I think we have a chance, Michael.
08:26There's a new serum they get from cows.
08:28We could get someone to help us.
08:29Where do you get it?
08:31We'll have to find a town that has a case of cowpox.
08:34They make this serum out of the blood they get from the infected cows.
08:37I'll send out wires to every town.
08:39Bus cruises, marionette, every town within 100 miles.
08:42Good.
08:43Lucas, watch Coyle.
08:45I'll have men post it outside in case he tries anything.
08:48All right, Michael.
08:50Move, mister. Move.
08:53All right, sit in that chair.
08:55Sit.
09:01Hello, son.
09:02You stay out there.
09:05You think you can handle the chores at the ranch, son?
09:08Do we get things straightened out here?
09:10Well, sure, I reckon.
09:12But, Pa, if it's all the same to you,
09:15I thought maybe I'd see if I could bunk in the night with Nils.
09:19I mean, I'd be right up the street and...
09:22I suppose that'd be all right.
09:24Maybe you can take him on at checkers.
09:27He beat you last time, didn't he?
09:29He's two up on me now.
09:31You keep your mind in the game.
09:33With a little luck, you might beat him.
09:36You run along now, son.
09:38All right.
09:44Pa?
09:46Pa?
09:50I hope everything turns out all right.
09:53I'm sure.
09:56I hope it does, too, son.
10:07I told you to sit down.
10:09Why? You want to play me some checkers?
10:15Hey, you don't mind if I have me a drink. Stay where you are, Coyle.
10:18What are you going to do, shoot me?
10:20Go ahead. What have I got to lose?
10:22Go ahead.
10:24Doc says maybe we're going to die anyhow.
10:27I walk out that door, the marshal, he don't shoot me.
10:30I get arrested in the house.
10:32I got nothing to lose.
10:36You'd just be making it quick.
10:39You drink that whiskey, mister, you pay for it.
10:42Well, sure, lady, sure.
10:45Here, keep the change.
10:47Now, why don't you relax and have a drink?
10:50You're going to hold that gun on me until this is over.
10:52You'll need it.
10:53I asked before that she be moved to another room.
10:56You do whatever you like, Doc.
10:59You going to help her?
11:01Molly and I can do it.
11:02I'll help you.
11:03You got the right idea.
11:05Get her out of sight. It's better that way.
11:11McCain!
11:15Molly!
11:30Well, that's a lot more like it.
11:40Yes, sir. This is a lot more like it.
11:43Get the blanket.
11:44Hold it!
11:45Someone pulled on the shades and locked the door.
11:56If you're going to kill us, get it over with.
11:57Otherwise, let us take care of this girl.
11:59Shut up!
12:01You let me think.
12:02You hear?
12:04Hey, where you go?
12:05The blankets are packed in here.
12:07You stay right where you are.
12:09You, get back there.
12:13Come on.
12:43Hey, you there.
13:07All right, Doc.
13:08You can take care of the girl.
13:11First, get her on the blankets.
13:12There's plenty of them. Keep her warm.
13:14Then take off her clothes. They've all got to be burned.
13:16Call me when you're through.
13:18Either one of you make one move for that window or try to yell out.
13:20And he gets it.
13:22You understand?
13:23I understand.
13:25Up to you.
13:31Leave him alone.
13:32I said leave him alone.
13:34I'm a doctor. This man needs attention.
13:35I'm all right, Doc.
13:37I'm all right.
13:43All right, get him on that chair.
13:44Come on.
13:49All right, McCain. Sit down on that chair and stay there.
14:13Oh, hello, Mark. I didn't know you were here.
14:15I've been out at Fred Tompkins fixing a busted wagon rim.
14:18Something I can do for you, son?
14:20You mind if I bunk in tonight with you, Nils?
14:22Well, of course not. You're always welcome. You know that.
14:25Thanks.
14:27You hear about it?
14:29About what?
14:30Oh, you mean the smallpox.
14:32Yeah, I heard about it first thing I got in town.
14:35Would you like, uh...
14:37Would you like me to take a look at it?
14:40First thing I got in town.
14:41Would you like, uh...
14:43I mean, can I get you a drink of water or something?
14:45No, thanks.
14:50Say, how about a game of checkers?
14:52Nothing like a game of checkers.
14:53Take a fellow's mind off his problems.
14:57I told Pa I'd even up the score with him.
14:59Well, if you're gonna catch up now, you're gonna have to concentrate.
15:01You can't go thinking on nothing else now.
15:07Why don't you finish setting up the checkers?
15:09I'm gonna go see how Pa's doing.
15:15You figure a way out for yourself yet?
15:19In a little while, it'll be dark.
15:21The way this town's scared of the smallpox,
15:23ain't nobody out there except the marshal and another gun.
15:25I get them easy.
15:27Then what'll you do?
15:28Just keep running till you drop dead in your tracks?
15:30Shut up!
15:31He's right. That gun's no good against smallpox.
15:33You gotta be alive to use a gun, mister.
15:35You kill the doc here or me or any of us,
15:37nobody'll even bother coming after you.
15:39Because you walk out of here, you're dead.
15:41Only chance you've got is if that serum gets here.
15:43Hey, is he right, Doc?
15:45You get that serum and we live?
15:47There's a chance, a good chance,
15:49if it gets here in time.
15:55You, come here.
15:58All right, Doc.
16:00Now get to the door.
16:01You find out if the marshal's heard anything.
16:03You try to tip him off.
16:06Don't do anything else, and you gut yourself another patient.
16:08Doc, aren't those clothes supposed to be burned?
16:10Yes, yes, that's right.
16:12And, Miss Mallory,
16:14be sure and give your hands a good washing.
16:16Why? Why's she gotta do that?
16:18Because those clothes are contaminated.
16:20Isn't it a little late for that kind of precaution, Doc?
16:22Never too late. Every little bit helps.
16:24You touched them clothes.
16:26So did I.
16:28We all touched them one time or another.
16:30How come now you tell us to wash our hands?
16:32How come now you tell us?
16:34I told you sooner if you'd given me a chance.
16:36Don't push me. None of you.
16:38Don't do it again. Also, help me,
16:40I'll kill every one of you before I leave here.
16:42I know, Doc.
16:44You call out and find out what the marshal's heard
16:46about that serum getting here.
16:56Micah. Micah.
16:58Yes, Doc?
17:00Did you get an answer to the wire
17:02you sent about the serum?
17:04Not yet. It might be a bit early to hear back.
17:06I told them to get the stuff here
17:08as soon as possible. Nils was telling me
17:10he heard there was some cowpox down by Heeler,
17:12so I guess you got some reason to hope.
17:14How's the girl doing?
17:16Still in high fever. Is Paul all right?
17:18He's fine, Mark.
17:20Can I talk to him?
17:22Well, he's busy. Maybe later.
17:26You having any trouble, Doc?
17:29No, we're doing fine.
17:31You tell Lucas if Coyle gets restless,
17:33I've got men out front and in the back.
17:35Yes, I'll tell him.
17:39You did good, Doc. Real good.
17:43You know, the Doc's pretty smart.
17:45If he tried to tip off the marshal,
17:47that serum wouldn't have done any of us any good.
17:51You know what I mean?
17:53She's starting to sweat again.
17:55Well, I'll go to her. If you have some broth or soup in the kitchen,
17:57I'm afraid she'll need it.
17:59I'll fix something for all of us.
18:01Hold it.
18:03I won't try to run.
18:05If I went out after being in here,
18:07I'd be a killer, just like you.
18:09All right.
18:11Let's all be comfortable.
18:13You sit down on the couch.
18:15Go on. I said sit down.
18:17And you stay right where you are.
18:19I'll finish my drink.
18:21I guess you have to expect this sort of thing
18:23when you run a hotel.
18:25I hope the people of North Fork will understand.
18:27Understand?
18:29Did you hear what I said? I said sit down!
18:31Somehow I feel this is all my fault.
18:33I'm sure they think so, too.
18:35How can you blame yourself for this?
18:37Listen to me!
18:39It's not because I brought Betty here to work.
18:41Only a child would blame me because Betty came down with the smallpox.
18:45It's the way I've acted since I've been here.
18:47I know what my attitude was.
18:51You once said I had a chip on my shoulder.
18:53Well, you were right.
18:55My dear departed father always said
18:57if you ask for your comeuppance, you'll get it.
18:59Well, this is mine.
19:01For someone who really wants friends
19:03but doesn't know what to do about it.
19:05I guess I take first prize.
19:09You do what I tell you.
19:11I said help me up!
19:13Valerie, come here quick. I need your help.
19:15What's that mean?
19:17It could mean anything. It could mean that we should know soon.
19:19She's pouring sweat.
19:22Break her knuckle.
19:29What are you laughing at?
19:31I was just thinking this is probably the first time in your life
19:33you ever ran up against something you couldn't shoot at and kill.
19:36Shut up!
19:48Oh, come on, son.
19:50Tougher situations than this.
19:52Besides, smallpox ain't sure death.
19:56Go on. It's your move.
20:00Have you ever seen smallpox, Nils?
20:04Yeah, I've seen it, boy.
20:06It's...
20:08Go on. Concentrate on the game, Mark.
20:12I saw it once back in Oklahoma.
20:14I was only six, but...
20:16But I remember the sight like it was yesterday.
20:20Oh, go on. It's your move now.
20:22And be careful. I'm getting set to double jump you.
20:26Oh, uh, Nils,
20:28I'm going over to the telegraph office
20:30to see if maybe they got some word in on that serum yet.
20:32We'll finish the game later.
20:39She's breathing better.
20:41Fever's down some.
20:43Gotta keep her warm.
20:46No sense in letting her catch pneumonia on top of this.
20:49Miss Mallory, are you all right?
20:52Yeah, I think so. Thank you.
20:58Come here.
21:00Come here!
21:02I put some soup on, and there's some meat here for Saturday.
21:04Oh, never mind the food.
21:06How about having a drink?
21:09Come on.
21:11Are you positive?
21:13Of course I'm positive.
21:15You see there and there
21:17where she's breaking out?
21:27Come on.
21:29No, please.
21:31Come on. Have a little drink with me, honey.
21:33No, I...
21:35It's gonna be a long evening.
21:37Why not make it more enjoyable?
21:39Don't try it.
21:41Why shouldn't he try it?
21:43What do you mean?
21:45The fever's broke.
21:47These are the blankets off her bed.
21:49She soaked them through.
21:51When we took them off, we saw it.
21:53She's breaking out.
21:55You know what that means?
21:57There's nothing anyone can do now.
21:59It's too late.
22:01It's too late even if the serum gets here.
22:03What are you saying?
22:05Didn't you hear me? She's breaking out.
22:07There's nothing anyone can do now unless...
22:09We might have a chance.
22:12There's a stove out back.
22:14Here, Mr. Coyle, you do it.
22:42Lucas.
22:44Lucas, come on.
22:46I'll get it.
22:48Lucas, come on.
22:52What's going on in there?
22:54Micah, Harry just arrived.
22:56They're sending some serum from HeLa.
22:58What happened?
23:00You go in and ask your father.
23:02Hold it, Mark. What's the matter with you, Doc?
23:04Nothing to worry about.
23:06Mark has had the measles.
23:12I've made mistakes before.
23:14Measles, chickenpox, smallpox,
23:16the symptoms are all the same.
23:18You just gotta wait.
23:24Measles, huh?
23:26I had to think of something.
23:42Miss Mallory.
23:44Good morning.
23:46There's nothing good about this morning, Lucas McCain.
23:48I've never seen the likes of it.
23:50The likes of what?
23:52That. They haven't given me a minute's peace.
23:54It seems like everybody in town
23:56showed up to go to work this morning.
23:58I've been running all morning, buying supplies,
24:00food for the dining room.
24:02Is there anything we can do to help?
24:04No, thank you. I've got all the help I can use.
24:06Don't get riled. Micah's just being friendly.
24:08It's just the trouble. Yesterday I didn't have any friends.
24:10But you know something?
24:12I like it this way better.
24:16Women.
24:21What would you do without them?
24:40The End
