After moving into an Ohio farmhouse, a family discovers that its home and property are haunted by the ghosts of a brutal murder and a deadly fire
Transcript
00:00A family of five moves into their dream house in the country.
00:10Everybody had their own bedroom.
00:11It felt safe.
00:12And soon encounters paranormal activity.
00:16What begins with footsteps and imaginary friends.
00:20Something was there.
00:21Escalates into something so evil.
00:24I saw her laying in a puddle of blood and I thought she was dead.
00:29And so powerful.
00:33It may never be tamed.
00:35Cast into hell all the evil spirits.
00:39Amen.
00:40In America, there is real evil.
00:47It lurks in the darkest shadows and in our most ordinary towns.
00:52Between the worlds we see and the things we fear, there are doors.
00:59When they are opened, nightmares become reality.
01:13Brookville, Ohio is a farming community on the outskirts of Dayton.
01:17It's one of those everyone-knows-your-business sort of places.
01:24Settled in 1850, Brookville sprung up from nowhere along newly laid railroads built to
01:29connect larger cities.
01:36I grew up in the country.
01:38It was safe, fun, big yards, close-knit community.
01:42And that's what I wanted for my children.
01:52In the fall of 2008, Alicia Cain and her husband, Scott, moved their family from Sioux Falls,
02:02South Dakota, to rural Brookville.
02:04When we saw this house, we knew that it was going to be perfect.
02:08Everything kind of reminded us of where we lived at before and we kind of fell in love
02:12with the place right off the bat.
02:14Did you scare them?
02:15Err!
02:16Oh, gosh.
02:17Mac is 15.
02:18What about you?
02:19Do people think you're a witch?
02:21Farrah is 10.
02:22And what about you, little devil?
02:25And Marissa is 6.
02:27Financially we were very stable.
02:29She was able to stay at home with the kids and not have to worry about work.
02:33It was a quiet little town.
02:36Everyone knew everyone.
02:38It just felt safe.
02:46Inside the four-bedroom house feels spacious and open.
02:49Look at this.
02:51We've always been in smaller homes and it was a good-sized house and we would have plenty
02:56of room.
02:58Everybody had their own bedroom and there was lots of space for everyone to run around
03:01in.
03:02But the house and property are not as ideal as they appear to be.
03:07In these walls, bad things have happened.
03:12Spirits are not at rest.
03:19By March of 2009, the family has settled in.
03:23Scott's job as a corporate auditor often takes him away from home, leaving Alicia to
03:28tend to the kids and household duties.
03:32Sometimes I spend two weeks at a time away from home and come home on the weekend and
03:38then go right back.
03:40It was really hard on all of us.
03:49Six months after moving into the house, weird things started happening.
03:54I heard footsteps and it sounded like bare feet hitting the wood floor.
04:20I just had this eerie feeling.
04:34I couldn't see anything but something was there.
04:47All of a sudden, I heard footsteps.
04:51They were getting closer and closer.
04:58All of a sudden, it stopped.
05:12When I didn't see anything, it made me feel like maybe it was just me.
05:17I felt confused, frightened, crazy.
05:21My gut told me that something wasn't right in that house.
05:29Alicia decides to keep the strange experiences to herself.
05:34When Scott returns home from his business trip, she feels safe once again.
05:42But one night, Alicia suddenly wakes up to intense heat.
05:46It feels as if the house is on fire.
05:49I was really hot.
05:50I had to throw the covers off.
05:54It must have been 90 degrees in that house.
05:57I was burning up.
05:59Scott?
06:00Mm?
06:01Did you turn up the furnace?
06:06Scott?
06:10At first, I thought maybe the children had turned the heat all the way up.
06:15The thermostat has not been touched.
06:21So I went to go check the furnace.
06:35The furnace was turned all the way up.
06:50I knew it was weird that there was nothing to explain it, but I just kind of let it go.
06:59One afternoon, Alicia hears something out of the ordinary.
07:02What's your brother's name?
07:05It sounds as if her daughter, Marissa, is having a conversation.
07:09I have a brother, too.
07:11His name is Mac.
07:14I noticed that she was talking to somebody that wasn't there.
07:19Who are you talking to, Marissa?
07:31Jacob.
07:33She was telling me that it was a little boy named Jacob and his brother named Stephen.
07:38Him and his brother Stephen used to live here.
07:41Look, I drew a picture of them.
07:50Why are they wearing masks?
07:52Jacob said they got hurt real bad.
07:57She told me that they wore sacks over their heads because they got burned in a fire and
08:01they didn't want to scare her.
08:02She said the house was right where our house is now.
08:06She said the little boys were upstairs in the loft playing.
08:09The dad was outside tending to the animals.
08:11The mom was cooking.
08:13The kitchen stove was a wood stove, and that's what caught fire.
08:16Stephen!
08:17Jacob!
08:18Where are you?
08:19It all made sense now.
08:21The preaking, the footsteps, the furnace.
08:23I knew something was going on in that house.
08:26Where are Jacob and Stephen now?
08:29Right there.
08:33I didn't know what to think, but when Marissa told me everything in detail, so much detail,
08:38I knew she couldn't be making it up.
08:42It frightened me.
08:59In the fall of 2008, the Kane family, Alicia, Scott, and their three children, move into
09:05a house in Brookville, Ohio.
09:08At first, all is well, until a few months later when Alicia begins to suspect their
09:13home is haunted.
09:16Wherever she goes, Alicia feels as if something or someone is taunting her.
09:23I heard footsteps and the furnace was turned all the way up.
09:26I felt uneasy about the house, what was going on, but I didn't know what to do about it.
09:32But then, six months after moving in, the situation becomes disturbing when her six-year-old
09:37daughter Marissa begins talking to imaginary friends she says died in a fire on the property.
09:43Stephen!
09:44Jacob!
09:45When Marissa told me everything in detail, so much detail, I knew she couldn't be making
09:52it up.
09:53I started feeling that the little boys haunted the house.
10:02My gut told me that something wasn't right, I just wanted answers.
10:08Alicia has not said a word to her husband, Scott.
10:11I decided not to tell Scott because he was out of town working a lot.
10:19Instead, she takes matters into her own hands and does some research at the local historic society.
10:25I was hoping to find answers of the owners who live there, who's died there, anything
10:31I could think of.
10:33What Alicia discovers rattles her to her core, factual evidence to back up her daughter's story.
10:39I found out there was a home on the property in 1865 and that it had burned down, so that
10:45confirmed what Marissa had told me.
10:49In that moment, I knew something was going on in that house.
10:53The records offer nothing more about the house or its inhabitants, but Alicia believes her
10:58daughter's new friends were burned alive on their land.
11:03It made me feel very frightened.
11:06I wasn't scared of ghosts, but I was scared of the unknown.
11:11That night, Alicia tells her husband about the records of the fire and Marissa's new friends.
11:22I'm really worried about Marissa.
11:26What if they're not imaginary friends?
11:34I don't know, what if... what if our house is haunted?
11:39I found this map in the historical society, Scott.
11:44Honey, she's just using her imagination.
11:48It's normal behavior for a kid her age in a new place.
11:53I kind of reassured her that kids have imaginary friends and it's kind of normal and there's
11:58nothing odd about it or strange.
12:01She's the youngest and the two older kids would kind of leave her out of stuff, so I
12:04just thought she was trying to make her own friend, you know, have someone to talk to
12:08because they were kind of older and kind of ignored her a lot of times, so I just thought
12:13she was trying to have a friend, imaginary friend.
12:17I was a little upset that he didn't believe, but I wasn't scared of the little boys.
12:23I felt like they weren't there to hurt us, that they were just trying to let us know
12:26what happened to them.
12:31It's an old house.
12:32When you turn the hot water on, the pipes knock and make noises underneath the house
12:36and the doors all creak and when the wind blows, you can hear it in the windows and
12:40when cars drive by, it's kind of loud sometimes and the lights will play tricks on you.
12:47I just tried to not focus on the house being haunted and live normal.
12:56Then, a few weeks later...
13:07Mom, someone's in my room.
13:13Scott!
13:14Marissa said somebody's in her room.
13:16You could tell she was very upset.
13:19Relax, sweetie.
13:21You're probably just having a nightmare.
13:24Maybe she should sleep in here tonight.
13:26Honey, it's fine.
13:29Come on, kiddo.
13:30Let's go check this out.
13:43That made me feel uneasy, very uneasy.
13:46I didn't like it that my child was upset and scared.
13:50Go ahead.
13:52Come on, jump up there.
13:55Now, I want you to understand, there's nothing in here that can hurt you.
14:00Okay?
14:02Okay.
14:04I think me trying to protect them, I was trying not to scare them, but I think that might have
14:08backfired a little bit because then they were saying, you know, Dad doesn't believe me or
14:12Dad doesn't believe me.
14:14I was trying not to scare them, but I think that might have backfired a little bit because
14:19then they were saying, you know, Dad doesn't believe me or Dad doesn't believe me.
14:23I love you.
14:48It's 2010.
15:00For months, Alicia Caine has been convinced that her house is haunted by the spirits of
15:04young boys who died in a fire on the property long ago.
15:10Her six-year-old daughter carries on conversations with the ghosts who appear friendly.
15:15What's your brother's name?
15:20While her husband, Scott, refuses to believe.
15:23Honey, she's just using her imagination.
15:27One night, young Marissa is visited by a much more terrifying entity.
15:34Mom, someone's in my room.
15:38Honey, it's fine.
15:40Come on, kiddo. Let's go check this out.
15:46There's nothing in here that can hurt you.
15:56Mom!
16:00Scott!
16:02Marissa!
16:04All of a sudden, we heard this terrifying scream.
16:11She said she saw a woman in her room.
16:16She said the woman's dress was torn and she was bleeding.
16:20It was very real to her.
16:24I had never seen her that scared before.
16:26It's okay.
16:27What happened?
16:28Nothing.
16:29Marissa's older siblings, Mac and Farrah, are concerned about their sister.
16:34I knew something was definitely strange going on.
16:38But Scott still isn't ready to accept that his house is haunted.
16:42Scott thought that because we were talking about the little boys, it stirred up Marissa's imagination.
16:49Come on. She can stay in our room tonight.
16:54I knew 100% that my house was haunted.
16:59I was starting to think that there was more to it, not just the little boy ghost.
17:06Over the next few weeks, everyone in the family is on edge.
17:11Even Scott feels the tension.
17:13I started noticing that the kids were a little more skittish in certain areas of the house.
17:20And the girls wanted to start sharing a room together. They didn't want to sleep alone.
17:25And so we moved Marissa out of her room into Farrah's room.
17:29The whole kind of vibe of the house had started to change.
17:32We were all walking on eggshells.
17:35We didn't know what to do.
17:37We were all very scared.
17:40But with Scott working out of town much of the time,
17:43it's Alicia who must cope with what her husband still denies.
17:48That something sinister inhabits her home.
17:51I wasn't sure what was going to happen next.
18:01Marissa?
18:04Farrah?
18:06Mac?
18:09I was starting to think maybe something bad happened in that house.
18:12Miranda, no!
18:19Hey!
18:22Didn't you guys hear me calling?
18:24Sorry.
18:26As soon as I went upstairs, I seen them laughing and having a good time.
18:30And I was so relieved.
18:32Where did you get these?
18:34I'm the child.
18:36I started paying more attention to the kids and keeping them more close to me.
18:40They almost fit you.
18:42Hey mom, come look at this.
18:49All of a sudden, Mac handed me this bloody ripped up shirt that he had found.
18:55It had been placed in the eave of the attic.
18:59Give me that.
19:01Kids, go downstairs.
19:03But mom...
19:04Now.
19:07Alicia believes the bloody shirt has a connection to the woman who scared Marissa in her room.
19:14It was like someone was trying to hide it.
19:17When are you coming home?
19:19Alicia would call me all stressed out, and then it would be like we'd fight over the phone,
19:22and then I'd want to just come home right away, but I couldn't because I had to stay for work.
19:27It was really, really hard.
19:29Something is in this house.
19:32Scott still didn't want to believe it.
19:35I was all alone, dealing with a stressful situation.
19:39All right.
19:40All right.
19:45I felt like I didn't have anybody to talk to.
19:48I felt alone, scared.
19:50I didn't know what to do.
19:53I decided to talk to my neighbors.
19:58To see if they knew anything that had happened in that house.
20:06Excuse me.
20:10Do you know if anything strange ever happened in my house?
20:19I just can't believe you're living in that house.
20:23You know someone was murdered there, right?
20:26Murdered?
20:29What do you mean?
20:32We were all shocked.
20:35My neighbor told me that the previous person that lived in that house had shot and killed his wife.
20:42She was just real sweet.
20:46A beautiful girl.
20:49What a tragedy.
20:57According to local newspapers, the murder took place in the early 1980s.
21:01Where are you going to go, Miranda? Where are you going to go?
21:03You have nothing without me. You understand me?
21:06The newspaper article said there had been an argument.
21:11Miranda, no!
21:13And he shot her twice in the back.
21:17It confirmed what had been going on in the house.
21:20What Marissa had seen.
21:22It's when I realized that the house was really haunted.
21:27I was feeling every kind of emotion there is possible.
21:30I was scared, frustrated, angry.
21:34And now I was worried about my family.
21:37I felt completely powerless.
21:40But the real terror for Alicia's family is just beginning.
21:45A few days later, Farrah hears strange sounds coming from somewhere in the house.
21:52Mom?
22:01Mom?
22:04Mom?
22:07Mom?
22:31In Brookville, Ohio, Alicia Cain believes her new house is inhabited by the ghosts of two young boys who perished in a fire many years earlier.
22:41After thinking about it, I realized that the boys weren't trying to hurt us.
22:47But the haunting intensifies when Alicia learns a woman was murdered in her house.
22:52Miranda, no!
22:57Mom?
22:58Mom?
22:59Now, the murdered woman's spirit begins targeting Farrah, Alicia's oldest daughter.
23:08Mom?
23:18All of a sudden I heard this terrifying scream.
23:22And Farrah was crying and shaking. It was awful.
23:26What happened?
23:28I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
23:33She said she heard creaking come from the bathroom, and she saw a bloody woman.
23:39She was bloody all over, had blood coming from her eyes.
23:43I tried to calm her down, but it was really hard. She was really freaking out.
23:48The way Farrah described it, it seemed as if it was the same woman that Marissa had seen.
23:54Alicia is devastated.
23:56It all made sense now, the clothes that Mac found and what Marissa saw.
24:02I was absolutely terrified. It was now targeting my kids, and I didn't know what to do.
24:07Alicia feels betrayed because no one told her a murder took place in her home.
24:12I was scared, frustrated, angry that no one told us what happened in the home.
24:19And now I was worried about my family.
24:21I went to go get the clothes that Mac had found, and I threw them in the fire.
24:25And I thought it would get rid of everything that's happened.
24:29I just wanted it to all go away.
24:36Alicia?
24:39What's wrong?
24:41Did you know a woman was murdered in our house?
24:45I didn't really want to believe it still. I was still kind of in denial.
24:48I didn't really want to believe it still. I was still kind of in denial about it.
24:52But when Alicia had told me that the previous owner had murdered his wife in the house,
24:57it kind of made everything fall into place.
25:00That's who Marissa saw in her bedroom that night.
25:03And Farrah saw her in the bathroom this afternoon.
25:06And she was covered in blood.
25:09Everything that the kids had experienced, everything that Alicia had experienced, it all made sense.
25:15It kind of floored me.
25:16I found this in the newspaper.
25:21It was, you know, staring us right in the face.
25:28I'm so sorry I didn't believe you.
25:31The evidence overwhelms Scott.
25:34He finally believes the house is haunted and accepts the idea that his family needs help.
25:40I knew that she was pretty much at her wit's end and we needed to find somebody to help us.
25:47She was going to fall apart. The kids were going to fall apart.
25:49Everything was just going to go south from there if we didn't get help.
25:54We knew that we had to find somebody to help us.
25:58We couldn't do it on our own.
26:00A mutual friend helped us find the foreman from Living Dead Paranormal.
26:10Soon after, the team of three brothers, Josh, Sean, and Rocky Foreman, arrive at the house.
26:24The Kane children spend the night with a friend to ensure their safety.
26:30On this particular case, we started up on the second floor because it was one of the areas, when we were doing the walkthrough, you got the heaviness on your chest.
26:37It was also the area that the family was having most of their experiences.
26:47Was that open a minute ago?
26:49I don't think so.
26:58Let's go check out the attic.
26:59Okay.
27:01As soon as I open the attic door, you hear a female voice just plain as day.
27:11It was real drawn out. She goes, no.
27:14It was like she was standing right there with us.
27:17At that point, you know, part of you says, you know, get the hell out of the house.
27:23But Josh feels a sense of responsibility to the family.
27:26Overcoming his fear, he and Rocky proceed with the investigation.
27:41What was that?
27:44I don't know.
27:46Something's in here.
27:50He immediately got a sad feeling.
27:53And, you know, he had asked if I was feeling the same thing he was feeling.
27:57Because a lot of times, you know, when you're in the middle of an investigation, you'll get different emotions, you know, from sadness or fear.
28:04And just going up the attic, you got that heavy feeling. It was just like an overwhelming sadness.
28:24Are you here with us now?
28:33What do you want?
28:41What do you want from us?
28:53For the past two years, the Kane family has been terrorized by the ghost of a woman who was murdered in their Brookville, Ohio home.
29:11The Kanes knew nothing about the killing before they moved in.
29:15Their daughter's terrifying encounter with the murdered woman's spirit forces Alicia and Scott to seek help from paranormal expert Josh Foreman and his brothers.
29:28Honestly, I really didn't know if it was gonna work or not. I didn't know what to think about the whole thing.
29:36While investigating in the attic, Josh and Rocky make contact with the murdered woman.
29:41Are you here with us now?
29:45What do you want?
29:53What do you want from us?
30:00We heard a female voice plain as day again, like she was standing right there with us, said, shoot the Foremans.
30:06When you actually get an EVP, knowing that it's your last name is really uneasy.
30:11We've investigated a lot of homes and we've never ran into anything that was this aggressive.
30:19It was definitely eerie to get something that clear.
30:23It really validated for us that, you know, whatever was in this house is linked to the murder.
30:29We need to pick it up a notch and do whatever we could do to help this family.
30:35Josh breaks the news to Alicia and Scott.
30:37This ghost is upset and hell-bent on disrupting their family.
30:42I believe the woman who was murdered in this house is still here.
30:46This was the home that she was supposed to start her family and raise her kids.
30:51And then in a very tragic and sudden way, all those dreams were ripped away from her.
30:56The Foremans told us it would only get worse from there.
31:00I tried to debunk things that happened that I couldn't explain or had no excuse for, but everything that was happening was real.
31:10Josh provides a solution.
31:13We'd like to bring someone in to perform a cleansing.
31:18We were at our wit's end on it, so we didn't know what to do.
31:22I was terrified. I was hopeful that the cleansing would happen.
31:26I was terrified. I was hopeful that the cleansing would help.
31:37Father Alan Dersham arrives at the Cain House prepared to confront an angry, restless spirit.
31:44He's a special kind of priest with many tools at his disposal.
31:49He's what's called an eclectic priest.
31:52I follow many different religions to combat the spiritual world.
31:59As soon as I got to the property, I felt an immediate, strong, dark presence.
32:04I know it didn't want me there.
32:09Thank you for coming.
32:11Yeah.
32:13Something was very hostile.
32:16It was almost like it was wanting me to get back in my car and leave.
32:22The Cain House
32:26While the family waits in another section of the house,
32:29Alan uses rites and rituals from five different religions to cast out the restless spirits.
32:36When I set up a cleansing, I picked the center-most room of the house,
32:41and I burned a black candle that will absorb every negative energy into the house.
32:46It was strange to have this man with all this weird stuff that we've never had in our home before,
32:53but we were willing to try anything.
32:56Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle.
33:01Safeguard us against the wickedness and the snares of the devil.
33:08I could sense spirits of children there, as well as a darker spirit.
33:12The children's spirits seemed to be more welcoming and just curious.
33:16They seemed to be stuck in the home.
33:18The dark entity was on the upper levels of the house, towards the attic and the second floor.
33:27The darker spirit in the home was very angry, and you could tell it definitely didn't want me there.
33:35I'm at battle with the spiritual realm for this family.
33:38By the power of God, cast into hell, Satan, and all the evil spirits who prowl about this world seeking the ruin of souls.
33:53My goal is to get rid of it.
33:55Nothing's going to steer me from that goal.
33:59Amen!
34:08Amen.
34:15I felt very strongly that I had eliminated a presence within the home.
34:21For one week, life in the house returns to normal.
34:25All paranormal activity stops.
34:28Alicia and Scott are relieved, hopeful that cleansing has worked.
34:32It felt as if this big cloud had lifted off of our family.
34:35I was happy. The kids were happy. Everything was pretty much back to the way it was before.
34:45It felt like at the beginning when we first moved into the house.
34:49But the haunting is far from over.
35:06I started feeling this burning on my leg.
35:09I was very terrified.
35:11All of a sudden, I looked down and saw blood on the bathroom floor.
35:19I followed the trail down the hall.
35:36I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
35:39For more than two years, the Cain family has been terrorizing the family's home.
35:45I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
35:49I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
35:53I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
35:57I saw her, Mom! I saw her!
36:01For more than two years, the Cain family has been terrified by the bloody spirit of an angry woman,
36:09murdered in their Brookville, Ohio home.
36:13After bringing in professional help and getting the house cleansed,
36:17the family believes their nightmare is over.
36:20Cast into hell all the evil spirits! Amen!
36:25But it's not.
36:28It's back with a vengeance.
36:53Marissa!
36:55I saw her laying in a puddle of blood and I thought she was dead.
37:00Marissa? Marissa? Marissa?
37:09She woke up and she didn't know what had happened.
37:15It looked like she had had a nosebleed, but it wasn't a normal nosebleed.
37:20What happened?
37:21This was my baby and it terrified me.
37:25Alicia rushes Marissa to the doctor who explains it's just a bad nosebleed.
37:31Alicia believes it's something more sinister.
37:35It was too much blood.
37:37Realizing that ghosts could touch you or harm you was absolutely terrifying.
37:45I tried to protect my kids, but how can I protect my kids when I can't even protect myself?
37:49I felt like it was only going to get worse.
37:53This is the last straw for the Cain family.
37:57To feel safer, we all decided to start sleeping in the living room so we could all be closer together.
38:04We felt we could keep a better eye on the kids.
38:08There was so much stuff happening that we couldn't even keep up with it.
38:13It was just, it was too much.
38:16The family decides to move out as soon as possible, but for financial reasons they have no idea when that will be.
38:24We are currently trying to get out of the house.
38:27It has been a burden on all of us to not be able to just leave the house.
38:34We're financially stuck, but we are saving to get out as quickly as possible.
38:40Me and Alicia decided that was it, we weren't going to take all the stuff anymore, we weren't going to go through everything again.
38:47We're trying to ignore all the other stuff that goes on and just concentrate on getting out of there.
38:52I had to go and have that talk with my kids again, you know, that we got to be strong.
38:56Dad, what if the ghost comes in here?
39:02Paranormal investigator Josh Foreman plans a formal exorcism of the house once the Caine family moves.
39:09He hopes to make it safe for future inhabitants.
39:13Personally for me, I was devastated to hear that the activity came back,
39:17because we had tried everything that we knew from the different experiences we've had over the last ten years of investigating the paranormal.
39:24But there is a chance that whatever they do, the spirits may never return.
39:29Whatever they do, the spirits may never be driven from the property.
39:35It needs to be something more in your face that's really going to push this thing.
39:41It's really time for us to think outside the box.
39:44My only hope is whatever this is doesn't follow them and they can be at peace finally.
39:54One thing is certain, the Caine family will be forever haunted by the experience.
40:01I was definitely a skeptic. I didn't really believe in paranormal, no.
40:06I really don't know what to tell people.
40:09I wouldn't wish anybody to go through anything like that.
40:13It's horrible. It's not fun and games. It's really rough.
40:19It's not what I was intending for my children at all.
40:23It hurts a lot. It feels like I'm not protecting my family the way I should.
40:30I hope and I pray that my kids can get over this.
40:35I feel very lucky we have survived.
