00:47Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra GarcĂa from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51We begin with the news.
00:53In the second bi-national tourism meeting between Venezuela and Colombia, President
00:57Nicolás Maduro ratified the proposal to defend the commercial exchange in the common border.
01:01During the event, the Venezuelan head of state assured that tourism is a source of brotherhood
01:07between Colombia and Venezuela.
01:09At the same time, he reaffirmed that in the last two years, the flow of tourism between
01:14both countries has grown by 46% after having been at minimum levels.
01:19Likewise, Venezuelan authorities assured that the meeting represents a significant
01:23advance in the collaboration between both countries.
01:26The Venezuelan president also indicated that after the talks, the best agreements that
01:31the two nations have had in 150 years have been signed.
01:46I ratify my proposal of beginning negotiations, Madam Vice President, given that we have signed
01:53the best trade agreements that Colombia and Venezuela have ever had in 150 years.
02:00I ratify my offer, my proposal to negotiate with a large industrial economic zone for
02:06investment, production, and trade in the immense border between Tashira and the north
02:23of Santander.
02:24I make the proposal, I ratify the proposal, 56% in one year.
02:30These are very promising numbers, very promising.
02:34In this framework we are also working with the Development Bank of Latin America and
02:39the Caribbean, and our great friend Diaz Granado, a Colombian from the coast.
02:55He is a personal friend of mine.
02:57He is a great man who has helped a lot, a serious man.
03:02We are talking in the framework of thinking big in a great economic development zone between
03:07the north of Santander and Tashira.
03:10And maybe a little further, we are ready to negotiate and sign.
03:17On Thursday, the Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab offered statements on the
03:21case of former presidential candidate for the far-right opposition Edmundo González-Urrutia.
03:26In this regard, Saab informed that during his meeting with González-Urrutia's lawyer
03:30José Vicente Aro, presented a letter acknowledging the Venezuelan justice system, but denied
03:36direct links to the crimes.
03:38The Attorney General ratified the three summons issued for the former candidate and pointed
03:43out that González validated the false website where images of tally sheets of the presidential
03:48elections of July 28th were shown.
03:51In addition, the Prosecutor's Office has reportedly opened a criminal investigation to determine
03:56the responsibility of those who threatened to assassinate the prosecutor working on the
04:01case of the Minas presented by the extreme right.
04:04Furthermore, the Attorney General affirmed that González-Urrutia was an excuse of the
04:09radical Venezuelan opposition to fill the country with violence.
04:17In this regard, as we have informed you, the Public Prosecutor's Office ratifies the summons
04:23with the arrest warrant in progress for M. R. González-Urrutia to be interviewed, and
04:27it ratifies that he is requested and must appear and brought to court abided by the
04:31Constitution and the law.
04:34The head of the Public Prosecutor's Office denounced that the 27 deaths and 190 injured
04:39were due to far-right's contempt of the electoral results.
04:45They are the masterminds of the death of 27 Venezuelans on the days following July 28th
04:49and of having fatally wounded 190, of which 100 are police and military officers, of having
04:56attacked and destroyed 400 state and private properties, such as high schools, colleges,
05:03universities, health and educational centers.
05:08The member countries of the OPEC Plus Alliance decided to extend by two months the implementation
05:13of a joint plan to increase their oil supply starting in October 2024.
05:18The Agency reported that the eight participating countries have agreed to extend their additional
05:24voluntary production cuts of 2.2 million barrels per day for two months until the end of November
05:302024.
05:31OPEC Plus also stressed that those countries that previously announced additional voluntary
05:36cuts in April and November 2023 emphasized their collective determination to ensure full
05:42compliance with the voluntary production adjustments.
05:45In addition, the Alliance set oil production quotas for its members as part of an agreement
05:50whereby Iran, Libya and Venezuela were exempted from the quotas.
06:01In the United States, former President Donald Trump said that the economic sanctions applied
06:05by Washington against several nations end up hurting the U.S. currency.
06:10During a speech at an event in New York City, Trump acknowledged that during his term he
06:14applied several sanctions to countries such as Venezuela, but then tried to lift them
06:19because they caused a blow to the U.S. economy.
06:22Likewise, the former President of the United States reiterated his position that if he
06:27were to return to the White House, he would reinforce many sanctions, especially those
06:31directed at Russia.
06:33It is important to note that these statements come after President Joe Biden and his team
06:38announced a series of sanctions against several Russian state media, which are accused of
06:43allegedly interfering in the presidential elections of July of 2024.

07:00We'll be right back. Stay with us.
07:13Welcome back.
07:14In Argentina, retirees who rallied against Javier Mele's veto of the pension reform were
07:20repressed by police forces.
07:22The mobilization was held from the National Congress to the Plaza de Mayo, where the security
07:26forces repressed demonstrators who were expressing their rejection to Mele's veto.
07:32In this context, the call for the protests is led by the National Coordinating Table
07:36of Retired and Pensioned Organizations, which gathers over 30 organizations.
07:42It must be noted that the federal police had also repressed, past week, the retirees
07:46who mobilized to the Congress against the presidential veto of the pension reform, approved
07:51by the Congress, which increased their pensions by 8.1 percent.
08:03And well, I'm here because of everything that's happening.
08:06Everything.
08:07The miserable 300 pesos that they pay us is not enough.
08:10It's not enough to live on.
08:12It's not enough.
08:13I got a bill for 110,000 pesos for gas and electricity in my house.
08:18How are we going to go on?
08:19This man is crazy, crazy.
08:21I don't understand how they elected him.
08:23What happened?
08:28I worked during the pandemic, and this starvation system is leading us to more deaths than the
08:32pandemic.
08:33And this is coming not only from a fighter for retirees, but from a doctor who has worked
08:44with so many deaths since the AIDS pandemic, and now the COVID pandemic, right?
08:51This policy will kill more people.
08:53For their part, retirees demanded that the Congress revoke a veto, arguing that what
09:04is at stake is not only the increase, but also the government's failure to transfer
09:09funds from national taxes to the provincial pension funds, and its refusal to pay court
09:14rulings in their favor.
09:16In that sense, this new march continues the campaign to collect one million signatures
09:20against the veto, coordinated by 35 groups of retirees, among which there are both historical
09:26organizations and new spaces that have arisen in response to the libertarian adjustments.
09:37In Uruguay, there was an increase in the number of prisoners during the year 2023.
09:42According to the Parliamentary Commissioner of the Penitentiary System, Juan Miguel Petit,
09:47the year 2023 closed with 14,969 prisoners, which represents 3.9% more than in 2022.
09:56In this regard, he pointed out that the penitentiary population grows by almost 1,000 people per
10:02year on average.
10:03Petit also suggested that the best thing to do in 2024 is to reduce this trend, although
10:09it has even increased by 7% in the middle of the year.
10:28Bolivian President Luis Arce opened on Thursday the 17th Meeting of Economists, in which he
10:34proposed to promote initiatives for the well-being and sustainable development of the country.
10:38During his virtual participation, Arce said that this type of space allows the shape to
10:44the economic future of the nation and the region and to reach alternatives to reduce
10:49the global slowdown and face the geopolitical pressures.
10:52The head of state also explained how world conflicts impact global inflation, food security
10:58and climate change.
11:06Europe-Bolivia is affected by the influence of world prices through international trade,
11:10especially through exports and we cannot forget the geopolitical tensions, which continue
11:20to rock the world.
11:21The conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and the conflicts in the Gaza border, have not
11:25only intensified inflationary tensions, but have added an additional dimension of global
11:35uncertainty that directly affects our economies in a context where two blocs are vying for
11:40world hegemony.
11:43Panama President José Raúl Mulino announced the extension of the nighttime curfew on the
11:48border with Costa Rica due to high crime rates.
11:51During a press conference held on Thursday, the Panamanian head of state said that the
11:55following week he will include the province of Bocas del Toro in the curfew due to the
12:00high levels of delinquency in the area.
12:03At the beginning of the week, a nighttime curfew was declared in the province of ColĂłn
12:07and in the capital district of San Miguelito in Panama City.
12:10Mulino also warned that harsher actions could follow in the measure if the measure does
12:16not work and urged families not to allow minors to be on the streets at night.
12:32Brazilians celebrate Amazon Day on Thursday amid severe drought in the region and increasing
12:42forest fires.
12:44According to the National Institute of Space Research, over 38,000 wildfires were recorded
12:49across the Amazon territory last August.
12:52In that month, the Amazon's state capital, Manaus, was reportedly covered in smoke for
12:57seven straight days.
12:59The smoke traveled thousands of kilometers south, reaching areas such as the SĂŁo Paulo
13:04metropolitan region.
13:06The 62 municipalities of the state of Amazonas declared a state of emergency, while authorities
13:10reported that over 330,000 people have been affected in some way.
13:16Brazil celebrates Amazon Day every September 5th, the day that Emperor Pedro II created
13:22the then province of Amazonas in 1850.
13:29Also in Brazil, illegal wildfires are raging in the Amazon rainforest along the Trans-Amazon
13:35Highway near the towns of Labreia and Humaita in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.
13:40Latin America's largest country has been battling forest fires for weeks, particularly in the
13:45north, in the Amazon, in the largest rainforest of the planet, and in the Pantanal, the world's
13:51largest tropical wetland.
13:53Environment Minister Marina Silva expressed that the forecast of high temperatures, strong
13:57winds and low humidity create a very propitious scenario for new wildfires in Brazil.
14:04Although the situation is critical, the minister pointed out that it would be incomparably
14:10worse if the forestation levels in the Amazon had not been halved by 2023 compared to 2022.
14:22Ecuador's Risk Management Secretariat warned that three forest fires are still active in
14:27the vicinity of Quito.
14:28The city council ordered to launch an investigation to find the cause of these fires, which burned
14:33at least 10,987 hectares of land.
14:38The agency also declared the situation as an emergency and highlighted that the flames
14:44caused the death of 32,000 farm birds and 20 cattle intoxicated by the smoke.
14:50In view of this situation, the Ministry of Education ordered the implementation of online
14:54classes in Quito to avoid exposing children to the side effects of the flames in the city.
15:24The 9th Eastern Economic Forum is taking place in the Russian city of Vladivostok with
15:39over 6,000 participants from more than 70 countries.
15:43The event will be held until September 6th and provides a major platform to develop the
15:48economy of the Far East and the international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
15:54More than 258 agreements for a value of at least $60 million have reportedly been signed
16:00so far.
16:01The platform also includes some 100 activities on topics such as international cooperation,
16:07technological sovereignty and transport logistics.
16:15Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered more than $50 billion to finance key projects in
16:20Africa in addition to authorizing special conditions for exports to his country from
16:24the African continent.
16:26The news were announced on Thursday in the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation
16:30Forum's summit, which is taking place in Beijing, the country's capital, and is being attended
16:35by more than 50 African leaders.
16:38Precisely, the meeting adopted the Beijing Declaration on Building an All-Weather Chinese-African
16:44Community with a Shared Future in the New Era.
16:47As a result, from now on, 33 African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with the
16:52Asian giant will be able to export goods and products at a zero-tariff rate, in which constitutes
16:58a historic cooperation agreement.
17:07Over the next three years, the Chinese government is willing to provide financial support amounting
17:13to 360 billion yuan, $50 billion, to Africa.
17:21In this context, African leaders thank China's commitment to contribute to the continent's
17:25development and the modernization of the global south.
17:43We find that all of them are in line with the implementation of Agenda 2063, and we
17:54thank China for focusing on Africa's development.
18:00In the name of our common humanity, we must work together to achieve the Africa that we
18:08want, and we must work together to achieve the world that we want.
18:17In this respect, I am delighted to note that our efforts are meeting China's desire to
18:22make a decisive contribution to the modernization of the global south, and therefore of Africa,
18:29for the emergence of a new, innovative development model.
18:35Israel has committed war crimes by wantonly destroying the homes and farms of Palestinian
18:40families as a form of collective punishment, so says a conclusive report by International
18:46Amnesty Group, which is accompanied by a call for those responsible to be brought to international
18:51justice.
18:52The investigation claims that Israel has created a security or buffer zone along the eastern
18:58perimeter by raising homes of orchards.
19:02The zone covers 58 km, or 16% of the entire Gazan territory.
19:08Israel assured to have destroyed terrorist infrastructure, but in reality it is entire
19:13neighborhoods with homes, schools, farms and mosques.
19:20The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, appointed the conservative Michel Barnier
19:24as the new Prime Minister.
19:26With the appointment of Barnier, the French President seeks to alleviate tensions and
19:30criticisms after accepting the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal following
19:35the setbacks of the European elections of June and the legislative elections of July.
19:41Barnier will be entrusted with the task of forming a government in a context marked by
19:47the demands of the bloc of left-wing parties of the New Popular Front, being the force
19:52that won the most deputies at the polls.
19:55President Macron pointed out that this appointment comes after days of consultations to define
19:59who was fed for the position.
