Hall of Famer, Ty Law, joins for 'Ty Tuesday'!
Is the Mac Jones dream done after last night? Who Does Ty think should start at QB for Pats?
Transcript
00:00All right, and he joins us this morning, I think, from the West Coast. Hey, Ty.
00:04Hey, what's going on? Good morning, guys. Pretty interesting, entertaining conversation,
00:10you know, with the mac and cheese. I got a buddy with that one on the onions. I don't know about
00:16that one, Curtis. I don't know about that one. No, I don't either. I'm going to bring it in
00:21tomorrow. You guys can decide. I'll send it to LA for Ty to try it. I'll give it a try,
00:25onions in it. Hey, you cannot be nice, Greg, Wiggy, Coco. If it ain't good, you must clown.
00:33Oh, we'll let it go. You must clown on the radio. We will. Yep, it's going to be a freak
00:37off. What kind of macaroni do you use, Curtis? Cavatappi, the spiral one. Okay, all right. I
00:42do elbows if you prefer. I'm very flexible. I like the shells too. I'm just trying to get some
00:47insight. Shells, I think, can get a bit messy if stuff gets caught in there and it's not fully
00:52cooked. The shells sometimes- They can also disintegrate a little bit more than Cavatappi.
00:57I'm a little bit disappointed in you guys that ain't nobody say nothing about how good vodka
01:04sauce is, especially when you're using Corvus vodka. I'll just throw that out there, but go
01:07ahead. Corvus vodka is too good to have it just cooked off. Oh, yeah. You know what? I got to
01:14give my man, Chef Nick, some love. Carbonate Hotel, Chef Nick Gillette, man, he can make some
01:19vodka sauce. Man, it's off the chain. I'm trying to tell you. Look, I'm not a chef. I'm a simple
01:26guy. I put in some lemonade to keep it rolling, but Chef Nick, he puts it down with the Corvus
01:31vodka and make a sauce out of it. I'm trying to tell you. It's unbelievable. I saw a thing last
01:35night- It's not for cooking, though. It's for drinking. I saw a thing last night on Monday
01:39Night Football that looked pretty good, Mack and Sack. It seems like Mack Jones and his dream of
01:52starting for the Miami Dolphins may have died before our eyes. He had his opportunity. That
01:56thing is gone. Where's Garoppolo at, guys? Is he out there somewhere? I think he's doing porn.
02:04He was suspended. Jimmy Garoppolo is- That's a promo.
02:10Yeah. I don't know. Ty, where are you today when it comes to Drake May? Wiggy brings it up every
02:17day. What's the delay here? Mayo, Gerard Mayo, your guy, was on this show yesterday saying that
02:25Jacoby Brissette gives this team the best chance to win. Do you feel that way?
02:33I mean, you know what? I'm a believer that you got to let quarterbacks develop. How many times
02:39did Jacoby Brissette get sacked? Was it seven times? I don't know if it was seven.
02:43No, it was five. Like five times.
02:45Yeah. I mean, check the stats. I think it was more than seven. You got to count the halves,
02:51all them halves. Seven total because Drake May got sacked twice.
02:55Okay. Seven total.
02:56So five- Okay. So he got sacked how many times and how many passes did he throw?
03:03Three? Two or three. So you got sacked twice. So you don't want him to be gunshouted. I mean,
03:09he's doing the right thing, playing better. Obviously, you don't have any protection.
03:12They need some work on the offensive line. You need some work on the defensive line.
03:17You got Aaron Rodgers out there looking like Aaron Rodgers from 10 years ago.
03:22You know what I mean? I don't understand it. And whatever happened with you to the
03:25fundamental thing in football that you must know how to do called tackling. You know,
03:30have you ever seen the worst display of tackling in your life?
03:34No.
03:34I mean, just get in front of somebody. I mean, that was the worst display of tackling.
03:41And I mean, I'm going at the defense and I'm a defensive guy because I always want to pat
03:45those guys on the back every chance you get. But that was absolutely pathetic as far as the
03:51tackling and the effort that goes into it. So I know Gerard Mayo got to be pissed. I don't care
03:56what he says as a head coach. Dammit, Gerard, you are pissed being a linebacker known for bone
04:01crushing tackles and making plays to see your team go out there and play like that. That defense was
04:06terrible. Dammit, let's go try out, man. Well, let me ask you this, Ty, because Bill talked
04:11about it. We obviously have our boy Matt Light on here who talks about it, practices not being
04:16the same. And it shows when it comes to tackling. You're a defensive guy. I could not tackle at all
04:22when there was an interception. I was just looking for somebody else to get the tackle before I got
04:27my head knocked off. What is it like working on tackling that makes you a better tackler?
04:38Is it just something that you either want to do it or is it? I know there's technique involved,
04:43but what do you think the problem is with the sloppy tackling? Do you think it is the lack of,
04:48I guess, maybe hitting and contact nowadays versus when we play?
04:53Absolutely. Absolutely. It's the lack of contact. You protect them out there for practices and
04:59things like that. But when you go full, I mean, because it's that catch 22. If you don't go out
05:05there and tackle you, you don't risk getting hurt in practice. We all know that. But you've got to
05:11go out there and tackle somebody. I mean, if that means your team is not good, you have to do more
05:17tackle drills. Plain and simple. You would think starting from little league. Hey, Greg, I played
05:22football since I was seven years old. Tackling is a part of the game. You think once you make it to
05:27that level, you will pretty much have that little fundamental, very important thing down. But
05:33obviously these guys don't have it. You know what I mean? And so you're not doing enough.
05:37Maybe you're trying to get the team together, get your pieces in there or whatnot. But I just don't
05:42understand how you go out there and put out that display, even from a standpoint where I can look
05:47at it. Effort is terrible, but that's not that's on the player. Like you have 14 missed tackles in
05:52that game that you're not saying that's on Gerard Mayo and what they're doing to get.
05:57No, I'm saying no. As a coach, you've got to you've got to have your guys if you know they
06:03can't tackle because obviously this ain't the first time you've seen it in this game. So you've
06:09got to do tackle drills. You've got to take it back to the old school. Hey, I don't give a damn
06:14if you got to Oklahoma drills in the pros. You've got to tackle because you cannot win in this league
06:19without tech. So, yes, I blame the players. But as a coaching staff, you've got to figure out
06:24what you can and cannot do. And right now you cannot tackle. So you have to do more
06:29tackle drills. You've got to put people in harm's way, I guess, if that's what you want to call it
06:33in practice. In practice, you put yourself in harm's way to tackle. Man, you'll never win like
06:39that. I don't care. I mean, he got to be pissed off because he's a defensive minded guy. That was
06:44that was pathetic. Ty, media members were in the locker room yesterday and they said that there was
06:48a game ball from the win over the Bengals in week one in every single locker. I just I don't know
06:55how we got here. That's the problem. That's if that was the case, that's a problem. I mean, I
07:01guess I mean, if you want to do something for for for the coach was his first win, you get a coach
07:07to game ball. But all the players get a game ball. I mean, you're giving out too many rewards because
07:13it's actually your job to go out there and win. So if you do some extraordinary, that's that's one
07:19thing. If you win the Super Bowl, everybody gets a game ball, an AFC championship. Everybody could
07:24possibly get a game ball. But this is too early in the season. Everybody is not choosing you to
07:30win anything. You go out there and do so. Hey, let's say you call me percent or whoever else.
07:36The head coach, you give him a game ball, but everybody. Come on, man. And you waste
07:41the value, waste the money on footballs because, damn it, everybody deserves it.
07:47From your perspective, from when you played on to the Kansas City Chiefs for a moment and the
07:54narrative that they get all the calls, the no call on the pass interference on what would have
08:02been the Kyle Pitts touchdown. Are they is the NFL trying to get these guys to three feet?
08:09Is that what's going on? I mean, there's a whole lot of speculation looks that way,
08:15but when you you're winning and it's a part of being the top team, you catch certain breaks.
08:23I'm quite sure that, you know, when we're playing at times that they might have missed a call on
08:29Tom Brady. I don't know. But when you're at the top, when you're the top dog, I think everything
08:33is going to be magnified every little call. So they're a good football team. You know,
08:41they're the team to beat. Of course, would the league like to see that? I don't know if that
08:45would be a good or bad thing for the league. You know what I mean? Because, I mean, you want to
08:48parody. That's why you get free agency and things like that. So, you know, it would be good for a
08:52Kansas City Chiefs organization. But I don't know if that would be a great business move on the
08:57league because we want to see different people out there. Now, if you earn it, that's one thing.
09:02So I can't say that it's being, you know, given to them, set up. They're a good football team.
09:07And when you're Patrick Mahomes and plays the way he plays, Andy Reid, you might get a break or two,
09:13but I don't see as any, you know, shenanigans. I don't think so. Yes, because that's taken away
09:18from what the players are putting out on the field. They just fight on the way to win.
09:21Well, I think that the league probably has to do a better job of going both ways with it
09:26because I, listen, I'm an offensive guy and I think the hardest thing to do is be a defensive
09:30guy, especially in pass coverage, because we push, we, we, we're always extending our arms
09:36as offensive players are given little chicken wings. We can't wrap a guy. No, no, no. I get
09:40it. But we're always extending flipper in, you know, pulling the guy that we're always looking
09:45for that little bit of an edge. And I granted, I know the one you're talking about is definitely
09:49a pass interference, but I think there are definitely, definitely, but there are a lot
09:54of calls that pass interference on defensive guys that you look and go like, really? Like,
10:02and it's gotta be hard. I mean, Ty, you, you've played it. It's, it's gotta be,
10:05I remember what was it? Sam Madison. You said, you know, when the league was different, go,
10:08I'm going to go out there and hold, and they're going to miss more than they actually call.
10:12But how would you play in this era? If you were defensive back, would you be a lot less aggressive
10:19than when you played, obviously? No, I would play the same way. Of course, I got to be conscious
10:26of what they're throwing, but I've told the story before that I had a pass when it comes to getting
10:32the flag early. So I try to establish that, you know, so being aggressive was my style of play.
10:37But no, you got to go out there and challenge people, understanding that the rules are
10:42kind of swayed toward the office because of all the Vegas and the fantasy and things.
10:47Now people want to see points from the voice of business at the end of the day when it comes to
10:51the offense. When have you seen a fantasy defense and everybody draft just on defense? It's usually
10:57the team, even though I don't understand all of the fantasy stuff, but Vegas, fantasy, that
11:04got a lot to do with the game. And that's why you see so many offensive players being able to push
11:09off without getting called. They'll get called if it's totally blatant usually, but it'd be tough
11:16for me. I probably wouldn't get no check, but of course I had the great Bill Belichick. They say,
11:19as long as you get a flag early, which I was probably one of the most flag guys out there,
11:24guys, I'm telling you, but it was, it was all a part of the plan. It was all intentional
11:28because I told you, I'm going to try to talk the shit out of you the first place.
11:31So as long as I do it, as long as I do it early, you know, and don't do it on third down,
11:37it don't cost the team that I'm fine. So that was my strategy. We had to dump out of that.
11:41That's a hundred bucks to the swear jar. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Exactly. But anyway, but Wiggy,
11:47I'm glad you admitted it to me and me, because you be pushing off, man, y'all receivers, man,
11:51y'all getting away with anything, especially, you know, when you got guys big like yourself or
11:55strong, fast, like T.O. and they push off and give you that little elbow, I mean, elbows thing. Y'all
12:01never get called, man. That's, that's irritating. Ty, what's the mindset for a player after you get
12:06embarrassed on, you know, Thursday night football, all eyes are on you on a game like that. And how
12:11do they take any positive from that moving forward? Coco, I don't see what you can take
12:19positive. What, I mean, it's going to be a bunch of low lights in there, you know, the next time
12:25you come back in there for the film and coach Belichick, as you know, Wiggy, he was the best,
12:29Adam. Oh my God, you talk about, oh man, that man, that's comedy jam. I mean, it was hilarious.
12:36And you just hope that you wasn't on there when he had to break you down. But it is no real
12:41coaching points there. Other than we got to learn how to tackle. He needs to go back to the
12:45fundamentals, treat them like some pop Warner kids and go out there and do Oklahoma drill,
12:50go out there and do tackling, hold their hand, because this is absolutely ridiculous. They
12:54didn't look like a good football team. And we got to, we're going to always give credit where
12:58credit is due, but you also got it. We got to do our jobs. And even though as a former player,
13:03I was on both sides of it, you know, the good and the bad, because when I didn't play well,
13:07I got talked about. So now I got to talk about them. You got, you're not playing. Well,
13:12draw, get these boys ready. I don't think Drake may is going to go out there and do anything
13:17better than Jacoby percent. I really don't. But if you want to throw him out into the fire and
13:22let him get his feet wet. Okay. Maybe in a couple of weeks, because if you keep playing like that,
13:27you're going to be out of playoff contention real early. Time now for the most entertaining play of
13:32the game brought to you by apex entertainment experience, the thrills at apex entertainment
13:36tomorrow. Um, I think it was the Aaron Rodgers. I mean, we got a pretty good kicker. Yeah.
13:48Greg, you got a point. You got to put, I was saying, I say, you know what? I think we found
13:51a kicker. That's it. That, I mean, I ain't see nothing else that that was exciting. And
13:57you know, uh, uh, you know, I know we got to say something, but damn apex,
14:02we want to do you better, but it's hard out here.
14:05What about the Drake Mayweather on fourth and eight?
14:08Okay. Sean, nobody's playing at that point.
14:16Hey, that's the kind of stuff that that's, that's those yards and plays that you make at the end.
14:21And you know, the, you know, the new England faithful, they will, you know, look at him.
14:27Believe me, everybody at the jets was already packed in, ready to go,
14:32ready to go to the club or whatever.
14:35Mayo wouldn't even call a timeout to let your guy try to punch it in.
14:39I got bad for him too, man. Like they were right there. You should have given him a chance.
14:43Those are like the garbage points. Greg got when he played basketball.
14:52That's the kind of stuff, wiggy. Don't even put me in the game. I look,
14:55I might not even go in. Y'all may go to hell, man. They ain't putting me in on that.
14:59All right. Tyler, I experienced the thrills at apex entertainment in Marlboro.
15:04Ty, great talking to you. I will talk to you again next week.
15:07All right. I'll be, I'll be there next week. I'll be a studio next week, man. So you guys did.
15:11All right. Awesome. We'll see you then.
