00:00Hi, Eric Goldberg here, and we're about to watch Mississippi Hair, a cartoon that doesn't
00:09get shown a lot these days, so I'm delighted it's on this DVD collection.
00:13Now, it's a pretty darn funny cartoon, and it's got some great animation in it.
00:19The reason that it isn't shown is because a lot of people consider it not politically
00:24correct, mainly for its opening scenes.
00:27They're done tastefully enough, but it's concerning bugs in a cotton field, and he
00:33is inadvertently picked by the workers in the cotton field.
00:53And there's one other scene that comes up later, which is also of questionable taste.
00:58But it's really a great cartoon in so many ways.
01:13That's a reference to the Jack Benny television and radio show, where Mel Blanc played the
01:19train track announcer, and he always ended with kuh, a manga.
01:25Sometimes they'd stretch it out so far, it was unbelievable.
01:34Nice piece of animation here by Benny Washam, very subtle.
01:46This is almost Chuck's version of a Yosemite Sam cartoon.
01:51It's almost the same formula as we cut here to Colonel Shuffle, who for all intents and
01:59purposes is the southern gentleman version of Yosemite Sam.
02:04Here he is, introduced the same way, blowing things out of his gun and claiming what a
02:12fabulous guy he is.
02:20Now his voice was actually provided by Billy Bletcher, who they used all the time at Warner
02:24Brothers and also at Disney's.
02:26At Disney's he was the voice of Peg Leg Pete, and at Warner's he was mainly the voice of
02:32Papa Bear in the Three Bears cartoons.
02:45This is really nice filmmaking here by Chuck.
02:48He started out with half of a poker chip, and just on the fade out, fade up, he's got
03:26a lovely scene by Ken Harris.
03:40Great timing, bang, kiss.
03:44Now here's the other questionable taste scene.
03:48It's kind of imitating a minstrel act here.
03:51Now, for all time now, for once and for all, this tap dance is animated by Ken Harris.
03:58Not animated by Virgil Ross as has been said in many other places.
04:03Ken Harris.
04:04It's absolutely Ken.
04:05And I hope I put that to bed.
04:21The Mississippi Mud becomes quite a running gag in this cartoon.
04:37Also not considered a particularly PC piece of entertainment.
04:46Here's the second part of the running gag.
04:57Great line.
05:03Gee, that bit used to be cut out on Saturday mornings.
05:12Carl Stalling music here, too.
05:14Kind of the upbeat chase version of I Wish I Were in Dixie.
05:21It's a great protracted piece here.
05:29Benny Washam doing the animation on the rather frantic Colonel Shuffle and Bugs.
05:41Nice little subtle acting going on there.
05:43He bites the dollar to see if it's real.
05:45He looks up to see if it's counterfeit, if there's a watermark on it.
06:03Superb timing in this cartoon.
06:08And what would a Bugs Bunny cartoon be without bugs and drag?
06:30Little Chuck Pose there when he got angry.
06:52It's a simple thing, too, but they never let the boat stop.
06:55It's always moving.
06:57You're always aware that it's continuing to roll along.
07:11This is called how you get value out of one drawing.
07:14It's just a pan up and then his take.
07:18Two hell drawings and you get so much out of it.
