00:00At 6 in the morning in Siasi, Sulu, Coach Alvin arrived at the home of one of his swimmers, K.I.
00:17They had a cup of coffee before the training.
00:23Even if it's raining, practice goes on.
00:31It's only been a week, and they're about to compete in the Palarong Pambansa 2024.
00:38That's why they need to double their efforts in practice.
00:42The sea is beautiful. It's clear.
00:45Yes, it's beautiful.
00:48Here in the vast ocean of Celebes Sea in Sulu Archipelago,
00:52the three young athletes are only practicing with the help of their coaches, Alvin and Husni.
01:01This is where K.I. will start.
01:04He'll finish at the starting line.
01:12Oh, Rids is here.
01:15Rids, good thing you caught up.
01:19Rads, you're not here yet?
01:20Rads, you're not here yet?
01:22Oh, there's Rads.
01:24There's no swimming pool that they can practice here.
01:30The nearest swimming pool facility is in Hulupa, four hours away from Siasi.
01:39We're doing our best.
01:41This is the only area that we use in practice.
01:48This is all we do.
01:50It's very far from the swimming pool.
01:54Coach Husni is already swimming.
01:57This area is used to set up ropes.
02:00This will serve as a marker until the distance they will swim.
02:06Sometimes, we put the ropes there for touching.
02:11We don't put any lanes because they will just swim on their own.
02:15For the layouts, it's just like that.
02:19They will just swim as far as they can.
02:46The lower level of this house is also their memory as the end of the ocean.
03:05Let's fly.
03:07Ready?
03:09One, two, go!
03:16The depth of the water here is five meters when it's low tide.
03:35The quality of the water in the sea and swimming pool is different.
03:40The water in the swimming pool is heavy.
03:42The water in the swimming pool is heavy because of the chlorine while the water in the sea is light.
03:53They are more likely to swim in the sea.
03:56But this is a disadvantage for them because in the actual competition,
04:01this is not the type of water in the swimming pool.
04:03They need a lot of resistance and a strong body to fill the 50-meter distance in a national competition.
04:13And one way for them to have endurance,
04:18they will train themselves to swim in the high tide.
04:23But for this to happen, there needs to be a typhoon.
04:27In the current, they are trying their best.
04:31Because they are against the tide.
04:36Especially if the weather is bad, in the high tide, the swimmers are really trying their best.
04:44While the swimmers are practicing,
04:48they are also trying their best to swim in the high tide.
04:52While the kids are practicing,
04:55there is a neighbor who is quietly watching.
04:58He is Madrigal Jauharon who qualified in the Sea Games in 2000.
05:04But he didn't continue because of financial problems.
05:08My father doesn't want me to continue.
05:10I am weak because I have a lot of opportunities.
05:13I don't have a cramp.
05:16What are you doing now?
05:18Nothing, just hanging out.
05:19What are you doing now?
05:21Nothing, just hanging out.
05:23Can you swim?
05:25Yes, I can.
05:27What is the breaking Philippine record?
05:29What is your record?
05:311.27 is the time record.
05:331, 2, 3.
05:36Passa Passa is the best swimmer in Siasi.
05:5016 seconds.
05:5216 seconds, point 12.
05:59I am a swimmer and I was part of the national team.
06:03I used to be a player for BARM in 1996 in General Santos City.
06:09But I wasn't part of the team.
06:11I didn't go to the QTS when we played in the national team in General Santos.
06:20Father and son training is what Coach Husni and his only son, K.I. have been doing for the past 14 years.
06:30In elementary school, K.I. saw potential in swimming.
06:35His name is K.I.
06:41These medals are the result of winning various swimming competitions in provincial and regional meets in Hulu and Cotabato.
06:51In grade 6, I learned breaststroke and butterfly.
06:56I asked my father to help me.
06:59I told my father that I wanted to learn swimming so that I can fulfill my dream of going to the Olympics.
07:12This is for Ritz Kimarraga.
07:14Ritz is the eldest of eight siblings.
07:17He is 15 years old.
07:19Like K.I., Ritz also won many medals.
07:23These seven medals, gold and bronze silver, are for Ritz Kimarra.
07:30The other two are for Kimarra.
07:36He swam every day.
07:39He swam when he was two years old.
07:42Because my father is a swimmer, he swam.
07:45Let's go.
07:51Ritz's family lives in Laot.
08:01Big Boy earns his living by fishing.
08:08Just like RZ, Radz's father is also a fisherman.
08:15Radz's talent in swimming is also what he uses to help his father fish.
08:22He is the youngest of seven siblings.
08:25We swim. We swim even if we have to wear clothes.
08:31Sometimes, when Radz swims, they practice together.
08:36When he swims, I help him with his schoolwork.
08:40I help him with his schoolwork. I support him.
08:48In Laot, they have a very large swimming pool.
08:55But it is far away.
08:57So that they can practice regularly,
09:00Here in their favorite place,
09:05their enemies are a sharp stone.
09:11The three of them swim back and forth on the sea.
09:16When it rains, they swim together.
09:19When it rains, they swim together.
09:22They are very close.
09:24The three of them are swimming in the sea.
09:31And this vast ocean seems to symbolize what they will face in the future.
09:41Their ambition is not just their own dreams,
09:44but the dreams of the entire SEASI and the entire Barm region.
09:48I want it to be after the Olympics.
09:51What?
09:52Olympics. I want it to be after the Olympic Games.
09:56I think that if I get stronger, I will be able to compete with other delegations.
10:02I want to join the national team. If I win, if I have a chance.
10:06Thank you very much for tuning in to Eyewitness Kapuso.
