Cela ressemblerait à un mélange entre un monde extraterrestre et une jungle préhistorique ! 00:00As human beings, we have overcome many challenges, such as glacial periods, serious diseases, or real estate quarrels.
00:08But let's go back much further, to about 400 million years ago,
00:12to a time when the oceans were dominated by marine creatures and where the land was almost devoid of animals.
00:18Do you think you could survive there?
00:20This is the Devonian Period, which began about 400 million years ago and spread over nearly 60 million years.
00:28This period owes its name to the Devonian region in England, where scientists first studied the rocks dating from this time.
00:38At this time, the world was radically different.
00:42The planet had three continents, the supercontinent of Gondwana in the south, a smaller terrestrial mass called the Siberian Kraton in the north,
00:50and the Laurasi in the east.
00:54These continents moved and collided, forming vast mountain ranges.
01:00Now imagine that your time machine breaks down and you find yourself in this ancient and inhospitable world.
01:07You are in a world where the earth is largely a sterile desert.
01:11You are surrounded by archaic plants such as moss and ferns.
01:15This is the beginning of the Devonian Period.
01:17The trees have not yet appeared, but the moss covers the landscape.
01:22And what about the water?
01:24About 85% of the earth's surface is submerged under the ocean during the Devonian.
01:30And you see around you many hot, shallow and low-oxygen lakes.
01:36The first thing you notice is that breathing seems more difficult.
01:40Do not be alarmed.
01:42This is due to a lower oxygen concentration, approaching 19%.
01:47It is enough to start a fire.
01:49And believe me, it could be useful to you.
01:52But wait until you feel a slight dizziness.
01:55Fortunately, there are no big predators to flee.
01:58But you will probably have to swim often to move.
02:02Well, at least the climate has the merit of being quite pleasant, warm and stable.
02:07If you keep moving, you will notice that the landscape seems to extend out of sight.
02:12This is explained by the fact that you are on Gondwana, the largest of the supercontinents.
02:17The movements of the tectonic plates being limited, there are few mountains and the earth seems almost flat.
02:23But not quite flat in reality.
02:25Gondwana housed a huge mountain range comparable to the Himalayas.
02:29This chain was gradually decomposing, releasing sediments into the ocean.
02:34These sediments enriched the waters in nutrients, thus favoring the development of marine life.
02:40One would really believe on another planet in any case.
02:43The landscape around you looks like an aquatic version of Mars.
02:47And the question that remains is, where is all life?
02:53Underwater, of course.
02:55This is not for nothing that we call the Devonian, the era of fish.
02:59In reality, it was not just about fish.
03:02The conditions were ideal for certain forms of primitive marine life to develop important characteristics such as lungs.
03:10Some even acquired the ability to briefly come out of the water to move on land.
03:15So, if you see a small creature resembling a lizard near the coast, avoid crushing it.
03:23It may be one of your distant ancestors.
03:26Well, it's not like you can really walk on it.
03:30Do you remember the illustration of evolution with this being at the head of a crocodile?
03:35This specimen is called Tiktaalik.
03:38As you can imagine, it is one of the first links between fish and terrestrial animals.
03:44And although it may seem harmless, it is actually 2.70 meters long and has sharp teeth.
03:52And yes, it is able to crawl.
03:54So, if you come across a big lizard, it is better to find a hiding place.
03:59You will begin to see more Tiktaaliks as well as other four-legged animals from the medium Devonian.
04:08Let's take a moment to risk our lives and dive under the surface.
04:12What do we have here?
04:13Welcome to a terrestrial version of the game Subnautica.
04:17Although the earth still seems primitive, the diversity of marine life is impressive.
04:22Corals, creatures similar to sponges, seabirds, seashells resembling seashells, and many more.
04:29The oceans are full of varied creatures, just as fascinating as potentially dangerous.
04:34Here are the huge carapace-like placoderms.
04:37And yes, they are all much bigger than you.
04:40These formidable fish have powerful jaws, filled with teeth-shaped serrated plates.
04:45They started out as small mollusk consumers.
04:49But over time, some have evolved to become real monsters,
04:53capable of coming to the end of large fish reaching up to 10 meters in length.
04:57The biggest among them was the Heterosteus, with terrifying eyes.
05:01The Titanic Tee, whose mouth seems ready to swallow you at any moment.
05:05And the most colossal of all, the Dunkleosteus.
05:09Ah, these are names to lay outside, aren't they?
05:11And here are some more modest specimens.
05:14These are the ancestors of sharks, cartilaginous fish.
05:17They had rough scales, rigid jaws, and replaceable sharp teeth.
05:23Finally, we also find tiny ancestors of bonefish,
05:27similar to our modern marine creatures.
05:31These are rather harmless and covered with scales, with very flexible jaws.
05:35You know what? This one could end up in your plate.
05:40But the question is, how are you going to cook it?
05:44There are no trees for fuel yet, at least not before the average devonian.
05:48You should therefore be content to pick up dry moss
05:51and try to rub stones to light a fire.
05:54Luckily, the heat of the climate would prevent you from freezing at night.
05:57But as there is little fuel available,
06:00you might be better served by adopting a raw diet based on mollusks
06:04and other primitive arthropods.
06:06In this world dominated by primitive terrestrial vegetation
06:10and surrounded by a vast ocean,
06:12getting food and resources would be a real challenge.
06:16Perhaps you could focus on fishing or collecting marine elements.
06:21In short, you would have to be very ingenious
06:24to make use of the meager flora available and, who knows,
06:28learn a few tips from marine creatures to navigate the oceans.
06:32Either way, you would have to start all over again.
06:36Surviving the devonians would be a test of size.
06:39Our bodies are not adapted to live underwater
06:42or thrive in an environment largely dominated by the first forms of marine life.
06:47You would also need a shelter.
06:49Perhaps you could try to build a rudimentary structure along the banks
06:53using earth and moss, probably.
06:56You would have to create tools and shelters with the resources at your disposal.
07:01So leave your creativity to chance
07:04and it will be better to get used to living without clothes.
07:07Unless you manage to make an outfit with moss,
07:11shells and fish fins,
07:13quite worthy of the little mermaid.
07:15Okay, okay.
07:17To make the task a little easier for you,
07:19let's imagine that you arrived at the time of the late devonian.
07:23There, we can say that things are improving.
07:26It was towards the end of this period
07:28that the first forests began to appear on Earth.
07:31We now find plants with spores, leaves, roots
07:35and even the first seed plants.
07:38Life settles little by little on the mainland.
07:40Finally, you can breathe normally.
07:43We now have small insects
07:45as well as creatures with four and six legs.
07:48The first terrestrial vertebrates, called primitive tetrapods,
07:51begin to appear.
07:53They are fascinating, being the distant ancestors of mammals
07:57and, finally, humans.
07:59However, beware Houston,
08:01we have a problem.
08:03With the expansion of plants on Earth
08:05and their ability to break rocks thanks to their roots,
08:08huge amounts of nutrients have been released into the water,
08:12triggering a chain reaction.
08:14The oceans are filled with algae,
08:16bacteria have proliferated
08:18and, due to the almost total lack of oxygen in the waters,
08:21about 70 to 80% of the species have disappeared.
08:25Oops!
08:27But good news for you,
08:29there are fewer hungry predators of oxygen in the water.
08:32However, you must now be vigilant
08:34against your new terrestrial neighbors.
08:37Most are not dangerous,
08:39but it is better to stay on your guard.
08:41With the increase of vegetation,
08:43you could make useful tools
08:45like spears, hammers and ropes.
08:48Towards the end of the Devonian,
08:49you could even consider building a cabin in the trees.
08:52Imagine this,
08:53in a world where the first tree ever seen
08:55reaches 28 meters in height
08:57and has an extremely large trunk.
09:00It seems that you could survive without too much difficulty.
09:03You could even adopt a vegetarian diet
09:05with all these options at your disposal.
09:08And, more clothes scratching,
09:10you could create something much more comfortable.
09:13Just be careful
09:14and try not to significantly alter our evolution.
09:18And don't forget that the dinosaurs are on their way.
09:20Until then, enjoy your adventure.
