00:00We have a lot of people in front of us.
00:02Well, you're right there, Diane.
00:04To give us a free Telemed about this, we will have a look at the pediatric specialist, Dr. Maria Cristina Ignacio Alberto.
00:12Good morning, Doctor, and welcome to Rise and Shine in the Philippines.
00:16Good morning, Donnie, and good morning to our televiewers.
00:21Good morning, Dr. Alberto.
00:23Doctor, can you explain what cerebral palsy is and how it affects an individual?
00:31Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders where there is difficulty in moving
00:39and difficulty in maintaining balance and posture.
00:43Actually, cerebral palsy is the primary cause of motor disability in our youth.
00:49So, the basic problem is rooted in the first 28 days of life and during the neurologic development of the child,
00:58when the parents are still young.
01:00So, this is a permanent condition, but it can get worse over time.
01:06Okay, Doctor.
01:07Yes, sir?
01:09Okay, go ahead, Doc.
01:11Cerebral palsy has many manifestations.
01:14There are different types of cerebral palsy that we see.
01:17We have what we call spastic cerebral palsy.
01:20These are the children who are stiff.
01:22So, this is the most common type of cerebral palsy.
01:26We are probably very familiar with this because this is the most common type of cerebral palsy that we see in our communities.
01:32We also have what we call dyskinetic cerebral palsy.
01:35These children have difficulty in their coordination, in moving.
01:40So, sometimes there is scissoring.
01:43As you can see, the children whose muscles are stiff cannot coordinate their movements.
01:49We also have what we call ataxic cerebral palsy.
01:52This is the type of cerebral palsy that does not have difficulty in controlling the balance of their body.
01:57We also have what we call hypotonic cerebral palsy.
02:01If the spastic cerebral palsy is stiff, the hypotonic cerebral palsy is lacking in tone or is too soft.
02:06So, that is their difference.
02:09It depends on the part of the brain that is affected during the development of the brain.
02:16Okay. Doctor, what are the main causes of cerebral palsy?
02:21Is it genetic?
02:25Okay.
02:27Actually, 80 to 90 percent of our patients who have cerebral palsy are congenital.
02:37There is no clear reason as to why this happens.
02:40And yes, it is true, Sir Donnie, that there are many genetic reasons.
02:45This is not contagious.
02:47Most of the time, it is unknown.
02:51So, we really don't know what this disease is.
02:56Second, it can lead to a brain infection, especially during the first 28 days of life of children.
03:03Third, it can also lead to an accident resulting in a brain injury.
03:07Okay. Doctor, what are the signs and symptoms that should be monitored to know if a child has cerebral palsy?
03:17Okay.
03:18So, most of the time, especially for our parents,
03:21we should always bring our children to the doctors and health centers
03:25so that we can monitor the developmental milestones of the children.
03:31So, if the growth of a child is delayed,
03:34and its motor movement, coordination, movement, and posture
03:40are not suitable for its age,
03:43this should be a clue that the children may have cerebral palsy.
03:47And as we said earlier, there are four types of cerebral palsy.
03:52So, depending on the type of cerebral palsy, we can see different symptoms.
03:56One of the symptoms is, as shown in this video, that the child's body is stiff.
04:02Second, sometimes, the children have poor head control.
04:05The head and neck should be in a good position for six months.
04:10But it still falls.
04:12In the case of hypotonic cerebral palsy,
04:14the child's body is very soft and can't move.
04:17It should be able to move, but it still can't.
04:20So, there is also paralysis of either two fingers, half of the body,
04:25or both hands and feet are affected.
04:29So, depending on the type of cerebral palsy,
04:33that will be the manifestation of our children.
04:37And unfortunately, there are also many children with cerebral palsy who have speech delay.
04:41We also have learning disability.
04:45And sometimes, even epilepsy or convulsions in children are symptoms of cerebral palsy.
04:50All right. Doctor, what are the available therapies or treatments for children with cerebral palsy?
04:58Okay. Unfortunately, and it's really sad,
05:02cerebral palsy is a permanent condition.
05:05There is no medicine for it.
05:07But we should also know that we have available therapies for children with cerebral palsy.
05:13So, speech therapy is important.
05:15Occupational therapy, physical therapy,
05:18and if they have a condition such as problems with the eyes or hearing,
05:23we should also address it.
05:25Not because of cerebral palsy,
05:28there is no longer a possibility for the child to develop and become a productive part of our society.
05:33So, for our parents, we should be patient
05:37and give what is right to our children with cerebral palsy.
05:41All right, Doc. Now, it's Cerebral Palsy Awareness and Protection Week.
05:45What is your message to the public about this condition, Doc?
05:50To our fellow countrymen, first of all, to our mothers and mothers-to-be,
05:55be careful in giving birth
05:57because our condition is critical in the development of our children
06:01to avoid cerebral palsy.
06:03And if we have children with cerebral palsy,
06:06we should try to give what is right to their therapy
06:09so that they can become productive citizens of our country.
06:13Let's not limit them because of their disability.
06:16Third, I also ask for the support of our citizens and our government
06:21to provide sufficient funds
06:23so that our countrymen with cerebral palsy can receive free therapy
06:27because this is usually the main problem or concern of our parents
06:32that they cannot afford therapy for their children.
06:35So, to our parents who have children with this condition,
06:38just be patient.
06:39May God give us the strength to help our children
06:44and improve their quality of life.
06:46That's right.
06:47Thank you very much for giving us a lot of information
06:50about the condition of cerebral palsy,
06:53Dr. Maria Cristina Ignacio Alberto.
06:56Thanks, Doctor.
