Puppy products I rate and hate
Transcript
00:00This is Ted the Cavapoo and he's nearly 10 weeks old. We've had him about a week
00:07and a half. Oh, tired boy. So as we've been settling in and I've been thinking
00:15about the things that I bought before we got him in the first puppy diary which
00:19was the prep and whether it was worth the money or not. So I'm gonna have a
00:27look at some of the purchases I made, review them honestly and if you're
00:33thinking of getting a puppy and then hopefully you'll find it useful and
00:39there's a few things that were good and a few things I've not tried yet but I'll
00:44talk through those as we go on. Okay so let's start with the toys. My son who
00:50has recently turned seven wanted to get one of these pigs from Pets at Home.
00:57Absolutely terrified of that, barks at that. This is a Kong chewer that I
01:03think you can put stuff in the middle and the idea is it stimulates them, lets
01:07try and get the treats out. They can chew it, they can roll it. Very little
01:11interest in that. You can get them different sizes. What he does love, he
01:16absolutely loves balls of any kind, particularly this because I think it
01:22feels nice in his mouth. Bounces, it's small enough for his mouth. So that came
01:28in a pack of small balls from Pets at Home that was just a few pounds. He
01:33also, this is a Kong, I think it's a llama, I'm not too sure, donkey. He loves
01:39thrashing that around in his mouth. It squeaks, it's crunchy, you can get it in his
01:45mouth, it's nice and soft, it's not going to hurt his teeth. This one, I think it's green and
01:49white. I bought this online. Anyway, he loves chewing on that. Again, good for the
01:56teething I think and that's got like the sounds that they like. So that's the toys. Now,
02:04treats. I went out on treats because everyone was telling me to train them
02:10positive reinforcement, you need treats. So I had gone out and I got these puppy
02:17trainers. I got them from the same people that I got that from online, Soft Chicken Treats and they were from Pets at Home and I spent about £100 in one go easily. So they're
02:30wainwrights, salmon and rice, little tiny bones for puppies. He's a puppy now
02:37them. We'll come on to those in a minute. So we got him home and I don't know whether he'd never had treats before but he basically wasn't interested in
02:47treats whatsoever, didn't know what they were. He soon got the idea but these are
02:51the ones in particular. I'll try and open them for you. They're just very, very hard. I can't open them but essentially, yeah, they look like that. They are only about that big as
03:06well but they're far too hard for his mouth and he just doesn't seem interested in them and they need breaking up. These puppy trainers here, he prefers those but still a little bit hard. He does prefer them though. The ones that he really likes, and we got lucky with this, my friend came and brought some presents
03:24around for him, bless her. He loves these Lily's Kitchen ones. Yeah, so there's not many left but they're kind of like a jerky texture. Okay, the licky pads. I've only tried
03:36this once. We tried it with Mashed Banana and the idea is that you keep your dog
03:41mentally stimulated. They've got to get it out of all the nooks and crannies in
03:46here and the crevices. There's sucker pads on the bottom so I think you can hold it
03:52in one place so it's not going everywhere. You can have it in the shower
03:55to distract them while you're getting them clean. Honestly, maybe he's too
03:59young for that. He didn't seem particularly interested. Okay, I'll move on to this
04:03piece of equipment which wasn't bought for the puppy but has turned out to be
04:09quite a piece of kit really. The nights are drawing in, the mornings are getting
04:16darker and for the first week at least we were up in the middle of the night
04:20taking him out so that he didn't wee in his crate. So what is it? It's a head
04:26torch. My husband, who is a runner, already had this. It kind of goes on like that.
04:33Fits around your head and what it means is that when you're out in the dark
04:37you're completely hands-free and you can see where they're going, you can see what
04:44they're doing and you've got both your hands free for catching them, cleaning
04:48them, picking up poo etc etc. Coming on to poo, these are the poo bags that I've
04:54been using. They're fairly expensive but they're very tough and I guess what you
04:59don't want is poo bags that are gonna leak at all. They've got handles on them
05:05and they're unscented but what I wanted to say was this was a complete waste of
05:09money. This is a little, I got it from Pets at Home, a little poo bag dispenser. You can
05:14you see them everywhere. They're only a couple of quid but don't bother. They're
05:17meant to come through there but you've got to roll the poo bags up in a very
05:21specific way, kind of overlapping the bag. Get them all in there. It doesn't fit
05:26that many in anyway and then they're meant to just easily come through here.
05:29Well they don't. Waste of time, just have them in your pocket. Also on cleaning, any
05:34issues? Same company, Earth Rated. These are lavender dog wipes. They smell
05:40lovely. When everything else is smelling disgusting, what you're cleaning off, mud,
05:45poo, wee etc. These are lovely. They're nice and thick. They're not cheap. They're
05:51really not cheap. They were about nine pounds on Amazon. I've seen in HomeSense
05:55that they sell quite a lot of that stuff so worth checking it out. Bugalugs,
06:01they do an incredible range of things to do with health and cleaning for a
06:08lot of dogs, cats, rabbits even, small animals. That is a no rinse paw
06:15cleaner which we have used because it's been raining and dirty in the garden and
06:18yeah, all you do, it's like a pump action and it's got its own little brush on the
06:25end there. We have also got dog cologne from Bugalugs. Now that wasn't cheap but
06:32again I've seen it in HomeSense. One is meant to spell like
06:37Paco Rabanne one million which it does and another one I've got is the same
06:43scent as this which is Baby Fresh. Now I think they're too sweet. I think they're
06:49too cloying and maybe just I'm associating the smell of those now with
06:56dirty puppy. They're not really my cup of tea. So the last bit, collar and lead.
07:04They're from the Wainwright collection at Pets at Home. Now this collar is extra
07:10extra small and it's on its smallest setting and it's still far far too big
07:15for Ted. It's that big that he has been getting his foot caught and
07:22tangled in it but I needed to buy one because of the car seat. You have to have
07:29them clipped into a harness in the car seat but I thought that was actually
07:34quite dangerous and we're not at the walking stage yet because of the
07:36vaccinations. So what I asked the breeder for was what he'd recommend and these
07:44are like little tiny cat collars really but anyway we've been using that. That's
07:49kind of his size, look how tiny it is and it can still fit two fingers through.
