00:26The general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly continues
00:31as world leaders discuss world challenges.
00:37And an Israel airstrike in the southern of Beirut in Lebanon killed the head of Hezbollah's
00:43drone unit.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:55To begin with the news, the Political Council of ALBA-TCP met this Thursday at the United
01:00Nations with an agenda that included the definition of strategies to help face the challenges
01:05of current geopolitics, the climate crisis and unilateral coercive measures.
01:10This way, leaders of member countries agreed that the meeting served as a new opportunity
01:14to analyse the achievements reached by the integrationist bloc.
01:19In this context, the foreign minister of Venezuela, Ivan Gil, stressed that the country remains
01:23undefeated in defending its right to build a new social order, to live in peace and stability.
01:30In addition, Foreign Minister Gil denounced the imperialist onslaught faced today by the
01:34nations of the regional bloc and highlighted the United's response to the unilateral coercive
01:40measures imposed against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
01:50The implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the United response to the unilateral coercive
01:55measures imposed against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are a testimony to our determination
02:01to confront and overcome these obstacles.
02:04We are not content to resist.
02:06We are building, with strategic vision, a new stage of cooperation that will allow us
02:10to advance in economic, agricultural and financial development.
02:14The creation of the ALBA-TCP Development Cooperation Agency will allow us to carry out a multilateral,
02:20multilateral offensive to allocate resources for integral development projects in our
02:24countries, hand-in-hand with Petrocaribe, but also with extra-regional allied countries.
02:30Likewise, the Venezuelan diplomat highlighted the re-approachment within ALBA-TCP and the
02:36BRICS as an instrument to strengthen collective capacities.
02:44The formation of AgroALBA will be key to advance food self-sufficiency and mitigate the risks
02:49of climate change in our region.
02:54These actions prepare us to face with resilience and sustainability the challenges imposed
02:59by the climate emergency and the risks of natural disasters, prioritizing the mitigation
03:04of its impact on our countries.
03:07Our horizon of integration expands towards the global south.
03:13We see with optimism the rapprochement between ALBA-TCP and the BRICS, a strategic alliance
03:19that will enhance our capabilities and allow us to move towards a multipolar world where
03:23the peoples of the south will not only survive but prosper in equality and justice.
03:28For his part, Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reiterated at the bloc's political
03:33council the call for respect for the self-determination of the peoples and for the cessation of foreign
03:38interference in internal affairs.
03:44Today we see with concern how one of the founding countries of this alliance is being attacked
03:48with noted belligerence.
03:51Venezuela is once again facing the economic, political and media arsenal of imperialism
03:58and right-wing extremism aimed at dynamiting its sovereign process of economic, social
04:04and cultural development.
04:08We reiterate our firmest support to the government of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and to
04:13the civil-military union of his people.
04:17It is up to Venezuelans alone to settle their own affairs free from external interference.
04:37Heads of state and government representatives continue to take the floor Thursday on the
04:42third day of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
04:46Our special envoy to New York, Jorge Gestoso, with the details.
04:53The reflection of all the members of the United Nations to create a mission on a permanent
05:00basis to keep the peace in Haiti has been the request of the President of the Transitional
05:06Council that today takes place in Haiti because so far there's only a mission sent by the
05:14Kenyans.
05:16About 400 policemen have been sent already and they expect 2,500 by the end of the year
05:23in order to keep only that part of the peace, especially in Port-au-Prince.
05:29They only secure the airport.
05:31Precisely because of that, the President of Haiti has a much more ambitious plan and I
05:38think it's absolutely necessary to create that permanent mission of peace.
05:44That was one of the highlights.
05:46He says also that in Springfield, Ohio, it has been said by the candidate Donald Trump
05:55that the Haitian community there eats cats and dogs and he said that is absolutely absurd.
06:02That is a show of xenophobic and racist remarks against not only Haitians but all the immigrants
06:10in the U.S.
06:11He congratulates precisely the community of Haitians in that city because there has been
06:18an example of good behavior and contribution to the city of Springfield.
06:26Before of that, we heard the President of the Authority of Palestine, we're talking
06:32about Mahmoud Abbas.
06:34He put special emphasis that he was not there in this case in the debate to respond to the
06:41lies, as he mentioned, of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
06:46He said that it's absolutely necessary to stop the crimes and even, he went further,
06:51he said to stop the genocide against Gaza that is taking place, he said it has to stop
06:57now.
06:58He put emphasis in now.
06:59He said that 70% of Gaza has been totally destroyed.
07:05That is absolutely necessary that the United Nations eliminate Israel because it doesn't
07:11deserve to be a member of the United Nations.
07:15He asked precisely to stop also the sending of weapons, weapons that are being sent by
07:22the U.S. and the international community, especially the European Union, to feed precisely
07:30those what is called the genocides.
07:32We're talking about more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of them children and
07:38women.
07:39At the same time, he said it's necessary to implement as soon as possible a permanent
07:45peace.
07:46The aid is absolutely necessary, the aid for the people, because they say they have nothing,
07:55absolutely nothing in Gaza, and it's absolutely necessary to establish a two-states situation.
08:03We have heard also the speeches of some countries of our Latin America.
08:10We're talking Uruguay in the morning, in the afternoon was Costa Rica and Peru, and we
08:15are expecting tomorrow to have a fourth session of the general debate.
08:21We get back to you now.
08:24Let's take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS or English
08:28where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:32We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:42Welcome back.
08:43An Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs on Thursday targeted the head of Hezbollah's
08:48drone unit Mohammed Srour.
08:51Lebanon's health ministry said two people were killed in the attack, the fourth in a
08:55week against Hezbollah commanders in the densely populated area.
08:59According to the source requesting anonymity, the fate of the commander is still unclear.
09:04On the other hand, the Israeli military said it was carrying out precise strikes in Beirut
09:09without immediately providing further details.
09:12Lebanon's official national news agency said three missiles targeted a residential apartment
09:17in a 10-storey building, which was close to the building where the head of Hezbollah's
09:23force Ibrahim Aqil and other commanders were killed in a strike last Friday.
09:34In this context, Lebanese mourners performed prayers over the bodies of 10 members from
09:38the same family killed in an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon.
09:42Lebanon said that more than 1,500 people had been killed in almost a year of cross-border
09:49violence between Hezbollah and the Israeli army that has escalated dramatically this
09:53week.
09:54According to figures in a statement released by the country's disaster management unit,
09:591,540 people have been killed, 60 of them in the past 24 hours, and 5,410 wounded in
10:07the ongoing hostilities.
10:16In the United States, protesters in favor of the Palestinian cause and in support of
10:20Lebanon mobilized in front of the United Nations General Assembly to demand an end to U.S. support
10:25for the Israeli regime.
10:27On the third day of the 79th United Nations General Assembly held in New York, citizens
10:33mobilized in front of the United Nations headquarters to demand the U.S. government to withdraw
10:38its support to Israel due to the genocide it perpetrated against innocent civilians
10:43in the Gaza Strip.
10:44They also called for a permanent ceasefire and the implementation of policies to stop
10:49Israel's aggression against the Palestinians and respect for their human rights.
10:54In addition, the aim of these protests is also to condemn and reject the Israeli crimes
10:59against humanity.
11:06The seventh edition of the Russian Energy Week forum kicked off under the theme Energy
11:11Cooperation in a Multipolar World, which seeks to strengthen trade and economic ties
11:16between the BRICS and Africa and other allied countries.
11:20The country's capital, Moscow, hosts the gathering, whose agenda includes business
11:24rounds of the global energy sector with the participation of companies, organizations,
11:29industry leaders, and government officials.
11:31More than 4,000 delegations from more than 50 countries will address the challenges of
11:36the energy market, with energy as the basis for global development.
11:47Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Equatorial Guinea counterpart, Teodoro
11:51Obiang Gemma Mansogo, as part of an official work envisaged by the head of state of the
11:57African nation to Russia.
11:58The Equator Guinean leader was received at the presidential headquarters of the Kremlin
12:04by the Russian president to fulfill the presidential agenda.
12:08During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the development and strengthening of bilateral
12:11relations, in addition to addressing international and regional issues of common interest, with
12:16the purpose of strengthening the ties of cooperation and brotherhood for the joint growth of the
12:21nations.
12:30In this context, during her participation in the Russian Energy Week Forum, Venezuela's
12:34executive vice president, Telsy Rodriguez, highlighted the impact of unilateral sanctions
12:39on the economy.
12:44Venezuela is today a sanctioned country.
12:46I think the introductory words by President Putin gave way for many debates to happen
12:51in the international community today, from the point of view of the energy market.
12:57I brought you this year's Sergei Achard.
12:59This is the global oil production.
13:0126% of the global oil production is currently illegally sanctioned, unilaterally sanctioned,
13:08violating international law.
13:10Without a doubt, the sanctions become economic aggressions and create problems in the energy
13:15market.
13:16That 26% of the world oil production is sanctioned today, means that there's a barrel that is
13:21at a discount price, that there's a barrel that is not being invested on, that it is
13:27a barrel that is causing a disturbance in economic equilibrium.
13:32The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced that the government has managed
13:35to balance bilateral trade by 2024 along with Turkey, surpassing $800 million.
13:42On an official press briefing, the head of state pointed out that good bilateral relations
13:47and high-quality strategic planning for inputs and exports facilitated this achievement.
13:52In this regard, the Venezuelan president added that Caracas and Ancara reached a balance
13:56in addition to agreeing on a common path in the construction of a multipolar world
14:01between both countries.
14:03These statements came after Maduro headed the second Turkey-Caracas 2024 high-level
14:08fair exhibition.
14:21President Erdogan insisted me on the need to increase the balanced trade between the
14:26two countries.
14:31And I think that this year we started to reach the increase on the grounds of the real economy
14:36of a balanced trade.
14:41We could say that we aspire to exceed the figure of $800 million in trade by 2024, and
14:49today we could already say that we have managed half-import, half-export so far.
14:57Thus, this is how the economic and trade bilateral relations should be developed.
15:05We have a second show break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our YouTube

15:31Welcome back to From the South.
15:34Hurricane Helene is intensifying, growing in size and forecasts to hammer Florida's
15:38Gulf Coast on Thursday with potentially devastating storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rainfall.
15:44The impacts from Helene won't stop at the coast, life-threatening flash flooding, damaging
15:50winds and some tornadoes will also spread well inland into parts of the southeast.
15:55Helene became the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season late Wednesday morning.
16:00It is centered just under 5,000 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida, and is striking north.
16:07Helene's maximum sustained winds are eight meters per hour.
16:11The storm is drenching parts of Mexico's Yucatán and western Cuba.
16:21In Peru, some 58 wildfires have been controlled, while 40 others remain active.
16:26The Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adrián Zen declared that the armed forces, volunteer
16:31firefighters and the National Civil Defense Institute have redoubled their efforts to
16:36confront the flames.
16:37Likewise, Adrián Zen made a call to the inhabitants of rural areas to raise awareness
16:42due to the vast majority of the wildfires had been broken out by human activity.
16:48Since July 1st, wildfires nationwide have led to 20 deaths and the burning of thousands
16:53of hectares.
17:01Human rights organizations in El Salvador denounced the consequences of the national
17:05government's security policies and the violation of human rights in the country's
17:09prisons.
17:10The Human Rights Association, Tutela Legal María Julia Hernández, together with a movement
17:14of victims of the emergency regime, presented new complaints before the Inter-American Commission
17:19of Human Rights.
17:21They activated the international instance due to the lack of institutionality in the
17:25country and the absence of the rule of law, for which they request reparations for the
17:30victims and the state be condemned for its security policies.
17:39On September 4th, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights presented the report El Salvador
17:44State of Exception and Human Rights, where the serious violations of human rights committed
17:49in the country in the framework of a security policy are fully proven.
17:53The report means a great achievement for the victims who have fought to defend the life
17:56of liberty of thousands of people captured illegally and arbitrarily by the government.
18:03They have been presented to the Human Rights Ombudsman's Office, to the Attorney General's
18:08Office of the Republic and, unfortunately, to the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme
18:13Court of Justice, which, in general, has issued inadmissibility and admissibility rulings.
18:20In view of this situation, it has been necessary to activate the international instance, since
18:27there is no functioning institutionality in El Salvador and, as we know, there is no rule
18:33of law.
18:36I was shocked by the UN speech, where he says that here we have freedom of purchase, that
18:41there is no violation of human rights, but the deceased are coming out of the prisons
18:46tortured and the press is being attacked by the authorities.
18:51The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, recognized the performance of police officers in the
18:56defense of sovereignty and democracy during the ceremony of their promotion to generals
19:00after 35 years of work and commitment to the country.
19:04The head of state assured that the immediate promotion to their new ranks, more than a
19:08reward, is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the institution.
19:12He also emphasized that, for the first time, Bolivia will have a four-star career general,
19:18the nominated superior general.
19:20In addition, the President also urged the new generals to continue to be the leaders
19:24of citizen security, to guide and administer the police service towards the security and
19:29protection of the people.
19:37In Mexico, relatives of the 43 Ayotzinapa students reiterate their calls for justice,
19:42while President López Obrador ratified the commitment of the next government to continue
19:47investigating the case.
19:48On the 10th anniversary of the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa normalistas, President
19:53Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his solidarity with the parents of the missing
19:57students and affirmed that there will be no impunity for those involved.
20:02He also emphasized the commitment of the government of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum to continue
20:07and advance with the due investigations.
20:10Moreover, López Obrador prized the progress made during his six-year term to clarify the
20:15facts and presented a report with an excess that summarized what has been achieved in
20:20the investigation of the incident.
