With students at state-funded schools in London and Wales have access to free school meals, we went out into Manchester to ask people on the street if they thought that free school meals should be available to everyone, or should be done on a case-by-case basis.

00:00Hi I'm Theo with Manchester World and today I'm heading out into Manchester to
00:03ask people on the street about free school meals. Now with children who
00:07attend state schools in London and Scotland all being afforded free school
00:10meals we want to know what people think of the idea of free school meals for all
00:13and what they think about the fact that the trials are taking place in London.
00:17I think it should be free. Back where I'm from, I'm from New Zealand and we didn't have free
00:22school meals and I feel I remember there being a little bit of judgment about
00:25what kid would bring which food to school and some kids having more food
00:28than others and getting jealous. I think like of course if there's like
00:32millionaires and their kids are getting free meals and that's kind of something's
00:35gone wrong there but I think they should be free for like the vast majority of
00:38people. I think that um yeah having free school meals just like eliminates that
00:42factor and takes stress off the parents and having to provide food for their
00:45kids going to school every day and so I imagine it being a good thing. I think
00:49there's it's a case-by-case thing really I don't think there's enough time or
00:53resources in the system to figure out case-by-case so I think in theory like
00:57there could be some system that in practice it should just be free.
