Debbie Byrne & Neil Melville - Getaway (1993)
Transcript
00:00London, Debbie Byrne shows us her favourite slice of Australia and the hideaway of actor
00:09and singer Debbie Byrne and Jeff walks the street.
00:13Next, Debbie Byrne takes us around her log cabin retreat in Victoria.
00:31The Great Ocean Road is one of our best-known tourist attractions, stretching along the
00:36southern Victorian coast from Melbourne to Warrnambool.
00:39And it's here you'll find one of Australia's best-known faces, Debbie Byrne, star of the
00:44musicals Cats and Les Miserables, as well as TV series like Police Rescue.
00:53About 221 kilometres west of Melbourne, Debbie and husband Neil Melville spend time between
00:58engagements at their Glenair cabins.
01:02Set on 120 acres in one of the most beautiful and isolated parts of this rugged coast, four
01:07of these self-contained cabins are available for the public to rent.
01:11Tell me now, what sort of special equipment, if any, do you require to come and stay at
01:17this desirable residence?
01:19What you need to do is bring your food.
01:20Bring your towels.
01:21Bring your towels.
01:22Bring your tea towels.
01:23If you're going to have, you know, very sophisticated evenings, you can bring your own table linen.
01:28But I say to people the thing you really need is a bottle of Cab Sav, two cloves of
01:33garlic and some eye fillet steaks and you're pretty well set for the weekend.
01:37A nice company and a good book.
01:39There's no mini golf or trampolines nearby, I think.
01:42No, I saw a distinct absence of mini golf.
01:46Complete absence.
01:50The nearest town, Apollo Bay, is 25 minutes' drive away, and Debbie and Neil like it that
01:55way.
01:56The peace and isolation helps them to wind down from their hectic show business schedules.
02:02Debbie is currently starring in Nine's Law of the Land, and Neil is in the miniseries
02:06Snowing.
02:09And while the cabins are a little remote, they're anything but primitive.
02:12Inside, it's a bit more like a small house than a log cabin.
02:16There's a well-appointed kitchen with a dishwasher, an open fire.
02:20Down the hall, there's a washing machine and dryer and two double bedrooms.
02:24There's no television set, but then who wants to watch TV when you've got a great view of
02:28the Bass Strait?
02:31And if you're interested in the most spectacular sight in this part of the world, the Twelve
02:35Apostles are only 40 minutes' drive away.
02:41You can also go fishing or head out along the coast or into the nearby national parks
02:45for some bushwalking.
02:49But it's the gentle hills and the ancient, jagged coastline that are the real attractions
02:54here.
02:55A natural antidote to the big city, especially if you work in showbiz.
03:00It's the moods, I think, down here that are so special.
03:04It's not just something that, you know, you look at and it's the same every day.
03:07It changes so dramatically, the colours, the coastline just, you know, allows you to swim
03:13in it and be comfortable, and then other times the only thing you can do is look at it in
03:17awe, you know.
03:19It's an exciting place to be.
03:22Glenair Log Cabins are 221 kilometres from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road.
03:27Prices vary from $420 per week per cabin during winter to $700 per week during summer.
03:34The cabins are open all year.
