00:00Welcome to Paglalang Pinoy M.D.
00:04Let's start your health and wellness journey with Pinoy M.D.
00:09Happy and healthy Saturdays to all of you.
00:11I'm your host in Kalusugan, Connie Sison.
00:14Later, we'll be joined by our trusted internist and health and wellness doctor
00:19to answer your questions about your health and wellness.
00:24So stay tuned for Pinoy M.D.'s return.
00:27Because when it comes to health and wellness, this is legit.
00:34This morning in Pinoy M.D.,
00:36Catarata is not only a condition of the elderly but also of the children.
00:41I want to get my eyes treated because my eyes are aching.
00:48World Sight Day on October 10,
00:50Catarata surgery was done for free in the province of Apayaw.
00:54I used to be able to see a little, but now it's blurry.
00:59I can't see anymore.
01:01My eyes are blurry.
01:03My dark circles look like a human face.
01:08There, it's blurry.
01:10NGO Mending Faces from America gave free surgery for children with cleft and lip palates.
01:17It's very rewarding, first of all.
01:19In the Philippines, there's a higher incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate.
01:23There's a lot of patients that don't get seen, don't have the money to have surgery.
01:27So as health care providers, we think it's important to be able to come down
01:31and to be able to help the children.
01:33We can have such a huge impact on the patient's lives for the rest of their lives.
01:37For more information that you should know, stay tuned!
01:49I guess this is the most talked about.
01:52This is when I showed everything.
01:55Like my stretch marks here, my blue skin here,
01:59the black line in the middle of my forehead that doesn't disappear.
02:05Singer and actress Geva Cruz is also being judged on social media.
02:11Someone said, my face is so dark.
02:13So I just answered, I said, it's called shadow.
02:19I'm sorry, I forgot to photoshop it for your delight.
02:23I don't post pictures for your pleasure.
02:29But the fit and fab at Proud Mom won't back down.
02:34Stretch marks and pimples?
02:36She also has that.
02:39This is when you sit down, there are also imperfections.
02:43You might think you're the only one with pimples, right?
02:47Because I don't want them to think that just because we're celebrities, we're perfect.
02:51We're nothing.
02:53And for those who say that she shouldn't wear a bikini at her age.
02:58This is what I'm most proud of.
03:00Someone said, you're already in your 40s, why are you wearing a bikini?
03:04It's embarrassing.
03:05That's what I'm saying, watch me.
03:09You know, it's just like that.
03:10It's like this.
03:12I'm happy with my bikini.
03:14I don't care if it hurts.
03:15Believe me.
03:18Someone said, if you have it, flaunt it.
03:21It's not just her fit and fab, her body is what makes her great.
03:25But as a Proud Mom, she's proud of her pimples, stretch marks, and loose skin.
03:33My intention there is to protect my peers who are in their 40s.
03:41The mothers who have stretch marks, loose skin, that other people can't understand.
03:53Geneva has been on the showbiz for more than three decades.
03:56If you ask her, she's used to being judged by others.
03:59She admitted at first that she's also afraid to show her imperfections.
04:05Because for 34 years of my career as a singer-actor, I haven't been able to answer to my personal life.
04:18I never say anything.
04:19I just keep quiet and I let it die.
04:22You know, unnatural death.
04:25That's why in her body positivity posts, she encourages her peers to grow up and love their bodies.
04:34Because this is something that I feel strongly for.
04:37Other women need to scream for them.
04:43That's my motivation.
04:45To speak up for my peers, my women.
04:52Fitspiration cannot be considered Geneva.
04:54She started her fitness journey in 2014 after giving birth to her second child, London.
05:02She also served as a coach to her mother, Heaven.
05:14Hello.
05:15Hello.
05:17Geneva also leveled up her health.
05:20Now, she's following a regular workout, like treadmill.
05:27Lifting weights and yoga.
05:29But it's also important to eat properly.
05:34I believe that it's not really about the scales.
05:38It's about the feeling in your body.
05:42Are you stronger?
05:44I will not replace myself now with my 20s and 30s.
05:52Not only did Geneva achieve a fit body in her workout,
05:55her body is also healthy and strong.
05:59For her, health is wealth.
06:02To each its own.
06:03It's not about becoming thin.
06:08It's not about that.
06:09It's how to become healthy.
06:12In 2021, Geneva lost her mother, Marilyn, due to COVID-19.
06:18Because of this, she values her health more.
06:23When my mom passed away due to COVID-19, that's when I realized that life is short.
06:29The greatest thing about being rich is our health.
06:34Even if you have a lot of money, you can still take care of yourself.
06:40But let's take care of ourselves.
06:42Because this is all we got ourselves.
06:46Even though many people are inspired,
06:48the negative comments about her still exist.
06:51Sometimes, Geneva can't avoid going to the bashers.
06:55I don't say things just to be praised.
07:00It's more like I'm just saying things when I really mean it.
07:06And hopefully, people will understand.
07:12Geneva's advice,
07:13it's better to start being healthy earlier.
07:18When I was in my 20s and 30s, I wasn't this confident.
07:21I wasn't this strong.
07:23Now, I'm stronger physically, emotionally, mentally.
07:29And it comes with age.
07:32And you know what's amazing about getting older?
07:35We need to be self-aware.
07:37Because growth really starts here in the brain.
07:42And also, just because you're in your 40s or 50s,
07:46don't allow anyone to live your life for you.
07:53Your body, your choice.
07:56You shouldn't be ashamed of your imperfections in your body.
08:00Because being healthy is not about age.
08:02The goal is just to have a healthy mind and body.
08:10Meanwhile, our internist,
08:12and health and wellness doctor, Doc Oye,
08:14is here to answer some of your questions
08:17that you sent to our Facebook page.
08:19Good morning, Doc!
08:21Good morning, Kapuso!
08:23And good morning, Connie!
08:24Doc Oye, first question for you.
08:26He's been limping for a month and a half
08:29and he feels like he's in a bus.
08:32His findings are BTPV,
08:35or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.
08:39The question is, can he do exercises?
08:42But he's still coughing and he's not feeling well.
08:46What can he do for this?
08:49The question is from Amie Berman.
08:52Amie, I'm sure your vertigo is the only cause of it.
08:57Because there are a lot of people who are limping.
09:01But Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo,
09:04one of the most common symptoms
09:06is when we have calcium crystals.
09:10That's what causes your limping or vertigo.
09:13The exercise that you do,
09:15the way to dislodge or clear it up,
09:19those calcium crystals.
09:21But there are many other symptoms.
09:23But usually, the vertigo or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo,
09:27they call it idiopathic.
09:29You don't really know the cause of it.
09:32But there are also many other reasons
09:34why you're limping,
09:35especially if it has something to do with this disease.
09:38So, I don't know how old you are.
09:40But if you're really persistent
09:42and you don't get tired of the exercise that you're taught,
09:46then it's good that limping is a symptom that is not neglected.
09:50And it's better if you can be assisted by a doctor.
09:59The beautiful paradise of Apayaw
10:01is in danger of not being visited by some of our countrymen.
10:06Because of the pollution.
10:09Welcome to Apayaw!
10:13The Apayaw that can be found in the northern part of Luzon
10:16is also considered the last ecological frontier of Cordillera Region.
10:21It's a perfect place for natural wonders,
10:24perfect for relaxation and nature-tripping.
10:31But its beautiful paradise
10:33is in danger of not being visited
10:35by a native of Apayaw,
10:37whose name is Nanay Jemina.
10:40She can hardly be seen because of the pollution.
10:58According to Nanay Jemina,
10:59she dedicated her whole life to farming
11:02to protect her family.
11:06Until last year, 2021,
11:08she suddenly lost her sight.
11:14She also suffered from frequent headaches.
11:18Before, I was able to see a little.
11:21But now, I can't see anymore.
11:25I can only see a little.
11:27I can only see a little.
11:32Now, I can only see a little.
11:38Because of this,
11:39Nanay Jemina can no longer do the work that she used to do.
11:47It's hard for me to clean the inside of the house,
11:51to do the laundry,
11:53to do the dishes,
11:56and to water the plants.
11:59It's hard for me to do the laundry,
12:02to do the dishes,
12:04and to water the plants.
12:07Old age is the common cause of blindness.
12:12Blindness is a disease in the eyes
12:17where a person feels a blurring of vision
12:23or a bad sight.
12:26As we age, we develop cataracts.
12:32Nanay Jemina had a chance to get an operation in 2021,
12:36but they didn't continue because of fear.
12:40Many people say,
12:43you can't get old,
12:46you can't do it.
12:53In the Philippines,
12:54cataracts are one of the main diseases in the eyes.
12:58According to the official data of the Provincial Health Office of Apayaw,
13:0210% of senior citizens have vision problems.
13:07World Sight Day was held last Thursday.
13:10It aims to spread the importance of eye health
13:14to avoid the blurring of vision and other vision impairments.
13:19In the Philippines,
13:20cataracts are one of the main conditions in the eyes
13:23where a person feels a blurring of vision.
13:27That's why the Fred Hollows Foundation,
13:30a member of the Provincial Government of Apayaw,
13:32held a vision screening in the barangay.
13:45That's why Nanay Jemina didn't hesitate to attend the vision screening.
13:52I'm excited because I really want to have my eyes operated.
14:12Good news,
14:13the Fred Hollows Foundation,
14:16which is an organization that promotes avoidable blindness.
14:23The Fred Hollows Foundation is a leading international NGO
14:27that has given sight restoring treatments and surgeries
14:32to more than 3 million patients around the world.
14:39The Fred Hollows Foundation started its medical missions here in the Philippines in 2014.
14:46The Fred Hollows Foundation has been working in the Philippines for 10 years.
14:51Now, under the Eye Health System Strengthening and Integration Project,
14:56six provinces are the partners of Fred Hollows
15:00to strengthen the eye health sector in their local government units.
15:04So Apayaw is just one of them.
15:07And recently,
15:08the organization helped the local government of Apayaw
15:12for an ambitious mission
15:14to give hope to patients who have blindness.
15:18Most of the clients supported by the foundation are the general public,
15:24but we wanted to provide eye health services to the so-called indigent or the poor
15:31who don't have the capacity to access eye health services
15:35because they don't have the means or money to pay for it.
15:40But it's not just the elderly who joined the vision screening
15:44because 37-year-old Jacinto was diagnosed with cataract.
15:50It was red and there was a stone inside.
15:54For a few days, my middle eye turned white.
16:03Jacinto used to live in Apayaw.
16:07In 2018, he left Manila and worked as a construction worker.
16:13I was surprised that at my young age, I got a cataract.
16:20Many people say that it's a curse.
16:26In 2022, he noticed that his vision was getting blurry.
16:31My left eye turned white.
16:36It's blurry.
16:38I can only see the left side of my eye.
16:46Jacinto admitted that he got the cataract from his construction work.
16:51He doesn't wear safety glasses,
16:54so his left eye often hurts and bleeds.
16:59But after a while, his eye turned white.
17:07So I started to worry.
17:11Some of our patients have comorbid conditions
17:16like diabetes and other incommunicable diseases.
17:22Others have a history of trauma related to work
17:27which also contributes to other diseases of the eye other than cataract.
17:35Because of his hard life, he decided to leave his job as a doctor
17:41and return to Apayaw during the pandemic.
17:45I was a bit nervous.
17:47But I also thought that I would lose my vision.
17:51It was like a simple disease that came to my eyes.
17:58In 2020, when he heard about the free cataract operation,
18:03he was not the last one.
18:06I found out about the free cataract operation here at BHW.
18:13They gave me a schedule to check up if I have a problem with my vision.
18:20The vision screening was conducted by the local government of Apayaw.
18:25The Fred Hollows Foundation is also involved.
18:28Mothers Janina and Jacinto are also present.
18:32I really want to have an operation now
18:36so that I can see that I'm having a hard time with my job
18:40and that I can't help my children with my job.
18:45I immediately went to my partner
18:50so that I can get my name right away.
18:55In the vision screening, the patient's eyes are examined
18:59to find out how serious the cataract is
19:02and if they can undergo the operation.
19:06From Barangay Health Station to the Rural Health Unit.
19:10The Rural Health Unit will assess the patient
19:13to refer the patient to our hospitals
19:18where there are optometrists or ophthalmologists.
19:23We are very lucky to have the Fred Hollows Foundation
19:26who have assisted us actually
19:29in starting to institutionalize the eye program in Apayaw.
19:33Especially, they gave the equipment for our referral hospital.
19:39After the examination,
19:41Janina and Jacinto both passed the vision screening.
19:46That's why the operation was scheduled immediately.
19:51What is the result of the operation of Janina and Jacinto?
19:55Stay tuned later.
20:03Back to you Doc Oye for our next Facebook question.
20:06There's an infection in the eye and the treatment is over.
20:09The problem is, the cataract is still growing.
20:14The question is from Patenio Cecil.
20:17Cecil, if you have tuberculosis in your eye
20:21and the treatment is over,
20:23TB is not the only reason for a long-term cataract.
20:27We also have what we call cough variant asthma
20:31or sometimes what we call allergic cough.
20:36If that is the case,
20:38we need to know what is the allergen
20:41or what is the cause of the cough.
20:45If that is the cause of the cataract.
20:48You know, in our body,
20:50we also have what we call immune system.
20:53If there is any perceived allergen or any danger,
20:58it will activate and release mediators
21:02like chemical mediators that will cause cough.
21:06Because coughing is a defensive mechanism of our body,
21:11especially for those who want to enter our lungs.
21:14That's why you cough.
21:16So let's know if this is triggering your long-term cough
21:20and if it is not connected to your actual lung disease.
21:28When it comes to health, you should always be updated.
21:31That's why we should be aware of the latest health updates.
21:35Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
21:38According to the World Health Organization,
21:40the Philippines has the highest number of breast cancer incidents in Asia.
21:45And the organization Mending Faces
21:48gave a free operation for our countrymen with cleft lip and palate.
21:55Let's be aware of all of that in the Pinoy MD Latest Health Update.
22:01In Binan Laguna Hospital,
22:03a free operation for children with cleft lip and cleft palate
22:07was given early by the non-profit organization Mending Faces from the United States.
22:13It's very rewarding, first of all.
22:15In the Philippines, there's a higher incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate.
22:19There's a lot of patients that don't get seen,
22:21don't have the money to have surgery.
22:23So as healthcare providers,
22:25we think it's important to be able to come down
22:27and to be able to help the children.
22:29We can have such a huge impact on the patient's lives for the rest of their lives.
22:34According to Plastic Surgeon of Mending Faces, Dr. Jeff Swale,
22:37cleft lip and cleft palate are hereditary.
22:41Some members of the family will get it.
22:43Much of it is due to genetics,
22:46a combination of the genes,
22:48and some of it is environmental as well.
22:51The solution to this condition is surgery.
22:54Here in the clinic, we're going to take a look at them.
22:56Basically, we want them to be physically able to recover from the surgery.
23:03For instance, with a cleft lip, we can repair them at a few months of age.
23:08Unfortunately, we're a little more conservative here
23:11because with the anesthesia,
23:13we want to be completely comfortable that they can handle the anesthesia.
23:18According to Farah Asierto, one of the partners of Mending Faces,
23:21anyone who will undergo the surgery must go through an examination.
23:25Not everyone is qualified or can undergo surgery,
23:29so they need to go through a laboratory test first.
23:33We requested them to have a faecalysis, urinalysis, blood test,
23:38so that we know if their body is healthy enough to go through the operation.
23:46One of them is Maisel Casin, who is traveling from Quezon Province.
23:51For those who might be able to go through the screening,
23:54her six-year-old grandson, Kendred.
23:57When the time comes that we can go through the final screening,
24:02and everything is okay, I will cry.
24:06I hope you will grow up to be a good child.
24:09Because I promised him that from the moment he went out,
24:12I told myself that I will help him until his face is fixed,
24:18his mouth, so that he can live normally.
24:22He will be able to follow the normal child.
24:26He won't be bullied, he won't be attacked.
24:30Kendred went through the medical screening to undergo surgery.
24:35And the next day, he went through the operation.
24:39And after the operation, here is Kendred.
24:43And his grandmother thanked him for the free operation.
24:49National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is this October.
24:52This is the only place where you can learn about breast cancer.
24:57So, let's self-examine or get a consultation
25:02to make sure that we are safe from this disease.
25:06The Department of Health of the Philippines
25:09The Department of Health of the Philippines
25:12recommended the BSE or Breast Self-Examination.
25:17This is for those who are in their 20s.
25:21First, examine your breast.
25:23If it looks different,
25:25while standing, place your hands on your hips,
25:28and place your arms in front of you.
25:31Check if there is a change in your breast,
25:34and if your nipple is swollen.
25:37Also, check if there is any fluid coming out.
25:42Second, check your nipples while raising your arms
25:46if there is a bump or lump.
25:50Third, while lying down,
25:52write from your nipples down to your navel.
25:55If there is a different lump,
25:57immediately get a consultation.
26:01Because when it comes to breast cancer,
26:03early detection is key.
26:06And those are our latest health updates this week.
26:09Always remember,
26:10whenever it comes to health,
26:12you should stay updated.
26:15Meanwhile, back to our Facebook question for you,
26:17Doc Oye from Neri Ann Adriatico Aguilar.
26:20She was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.
26:23She took medication again.
26:26Her question is,
26:27is it normal for her face to turn white?
26:30Neri Ann, I'm sorry.
26:32This feeling is really heavy.
26:35But imatinib is a type of chemotherapy.
26:39One of its side effects is hypopigmentation
26:44or why your skin turns white.
26:47Because it inhibits what we call melanin,
26:51so the melanocytes,
26:53where melanin produces.
26:55So while you're taking medication,
26:57it inhibits it,
26:58so the color of our skin is lost,
27:00that's why you're turning white.
27:02But if you don't take your medication regularly,
27:05hopefully when the side effects of imatinib stop,
27:12the old color of your skin will return.
27:19For the first time,
27:20Gemina and Jacinto are going to the surgery room
27:24for a free operation.
27:26Along with them is her hope to see her again.
27:29I want to get my eyes treated
27:31because my eyes are hurting.
27:35My head is spinning and my head hurts.
27:39It's like my work is getting less.
27:43I want to get an operation now
27:46so I can see that I'm having a hard time with my work.
27:50I can't help my children with my work.
27:55After going through a vision screening
27:57and having a medical clearance,
27:59they will go under for the operation.
28:02In all surgeries,
28:03there is a so-called clearance.
28:05We need to make sure that her body is okay,
28:07that she doesn't have any other heart or lung problems.
28:09The patients are awake,
28:11so we just give them anesthesia
28:14so that they don't feel the procedure we do to them.
28:21Under the so-called extra-capsular cataract extraction,
28:25there are two procedures.
28:27We made a small incision in her eye.
28:29We gave her anesthesia again
28:31and a little medicine.
28:33We removed her glasses,
28:35put them back on,
28:36cleaned her eyes,
28:37and made a few stitches
28:40to make sure that the content of her eyes won't come out.
28:46It is possible for the operation to last for 45 minutes
28:49to an hour,
28:51depending on the patient's case.
28:53The cost of this operation
28:55is equivalent to the size of her eyes.
28:58It averages,
28:59especially for me,
29:00in the case of fake or emulsification,
29:02it ranges from P15,000 to P20,000.
29:06It is good and free
29:08for the mother,
29:09Jamina,
29:10and Jacinto.
29:12May this operation be a success for them.
29:15Wait for it.
29:16Later.
29:18According to the Philippine Eye Research Institute or PERI,
29:22more than one million Filipinos have visual impairment.
29:26But, my fellow Filipinos,
29:27the cataract surgery in the Universal Healthcare Law of PhilHealth
29:32is good enough
29:33to help Filipinos with cataract.
29:37Our doctors have a reminder,
29:39don't be shy to approach experts
29:41to clarify our questions.
29:44One of the things that should be noticed
29:47is patient education.
29:49There are still many people who believe in this.
29:52For example,
29:53if someone has an accident,
29:54they put milk in their eyes.
29:56Others are afraid to get a check-up
29:58and still believe in alveoli
30:01or what they hear or see.
30:04According to Dr. Bakani,
30:06an ophthalmologist from Apayao,
30:08there is a high chance of cataract while aging.
30:12But, it is possible to avoid it while a child.
30:16For those who work in traumatic cataract,
30:20I would advise that
30:22they should wear their goggles,
30:25their protective goggles,
30:27to protect their eyes
30:29to avoid accidents in the eyes
30:32and to have traumatic cataract.
30:35Also, avoid smoking.
30:37Smoking makes aging faster.
30:40So, we should avoid developing cataract early.
30:45For those who have diabetes,
30:49it is better to give proper action
30:54to the right doctor.
30:58It is also possible to develop cataract
31:01while sunbathing for a long time.
31:03Long exposure to the sun can contribute
31:07because it also helps in aging the lens.
31:10So, that is one of the things
31:12that we advise to patients
31:14who are exposed to the sun,
31:16farmers, fishermen,
31:18to always wear shades
31:20to avoid direct exposure to the sun.
31:25Most of all,
31:27the taste of the eyes
31:29versus the few medicines for cataract.
31:31It is different when you go for a check-up
31:34and consult with the right people,
31:37doctors and people in the hospital
31:40because they will be able to guide you.
31:42You can find a lot of information on social media.
31:45As we speak,
31:47no medicine has been invented yet
31:49to prevent cataract
31:51or to prevent cataract
31:53if you wear shades.
31:56Meanwhile,
31:57after being under the care of
31:58grandmother Jemina and Hasinto
32:00for almost an hour of operation,
32:02cataract was successfully removed
32:05from their eyes.
32:06Hasinto...
32:08Have you seen this before?
32:09No.
32:12Congratulations, sir.
32:13It's like...
32:15It's like I've seen this before.
32:19And grandmother Jemina...
32:21This is it.
32:22This is it.
32:23That's it.
32:24This is it.
32:27That's it.
32:28That's it.
32:29If it's an extra-capsular cataract extraction,
32:32maybe,
32:33so that they can appreciate the surgery
32:35for two to three weeks.
32:38But if it's a phacoemulsification,
32:40maybe,
32:41for one week,
32:42they will notice it more.
32:44Sometimes, even after the surgery,
32:46they can notice the difference
32:48in their eyes.
32:49Our batting rate is good.
32:51About 80-90 percent,
32:54the patients are okay.
32:56They are just two
32:57among many of our countrymen
32:58who were given the opportunity
33:00to see their loved ones again
33:02in life
33:03and the beauty of the environment.
33:06They say,
33:07when you see the real beauty
33:09of your surroundings,
33:10you don't want to close your eyes.
33:13That's why,
33:14take care of your eyes.
33:16Be a good doctor
33:18so that you can avoid cataracts
33:21while it's still early.
33:26And for our next and last question,
33:28Doc, for you.
33:29A question from Linlin Bondal.
33:31What is prohibited
33:32and not prohibited
33:33in thyroid problems?
33:35Linlin,
33:36what type of thyroid problem?
33:38Because there are many thyroid problems.
33:40Is it hypothyroidism?
33:42Is it hyperthyroidism?
33:44But what I will tell you,
33:46there are substances or nutrients
33:48that can help
33:50to improve the production
33:52of thyroid hormone
33:54or your thyroid gland.
33:55So that your thyroid hormone
33:57can be balanced.
33:59Like amino acids,
34:02those are important.
34:03Or from protein.
34:04Or B vitamins,
34:05particularly B1,
34:07B3,
34:08and B5 vitamins.
34:10Those are important.
34:11Of course, minerals.
34:12These are very important.
34:14Zinc and selenium.
34:16Our thyroid gland needs those
34:18to produce thyroid hormone
34:21that our body needs.
