00:00More than 3 million pesos worth of white onions were stolen in the province of Manila.
00:05This illegal permit is now gone.
00:07Witness, Bernadette Reyes.
00:12A 40-foot container van full of white onions was hit by the Bureau of Plant Industry, or BPI, in South Harbor, Manila.
00:20It weighed 25 metric tons and was worth 3.5 million pesos.
00:25Onions came from China and entered the country without a proper sanitary and phytosanitary permit import clearance
00:33or passed through the standards and safe to eat.
00:36According to BPI, they issued an import permit for the importation of 16,000 metric tons of white onions
00:43but for its supply in September to December.
00:47We saw that they declared yellow onions but we were not issuing yellow onions at that time, July.
00:56So we immediately reported it.
00:59We alerted the Bureau of Customs and they immediately issued a hold order.
01:07According to the Bureau of Plant Industry, the harvest season for onions will resume in January
01:13and it is said that the 16,000 metric tons of white onions will be enough for the upcoming holiday season.
01:20According to the store owner, it is a big help that there is an onion supply so that the price does not go up.
01:26Before, onions were expensive.
01:28So now, it's good that we're not having a hard time finding onions.
01:34In the monitoring of the Department of Agriculture,
01:36imported white onions vary from P70 to P180 per kilo.
01:42Local onions range from P90 to P140 while red onions range from P75 to P140 per kilo.
01:49In the holiday season, the price tends to increase.
01:53We also point out that there is a supply so they cannot increase or spike the price.
