00:27Tu sais quoi ? Oui, ça a été un an bizarre. J'ai besoin d'un hobby.
00:32Celui-ci. Ferrari, non pas juste un phase. Oh, comme les Ferraris.
00:38C'est juste pour faire des recherches.
00:41C'est celui-ci.
00:44Polestar 2. Donne le billet de dollar. Ça a l'air amusant.
00:48Tu as écrit des petits diagrams.
00:50Celui-ci s'est écrit.
00:57Tu regardes Throttle House. Je suis Thomas.
01:00Et je suis James.
01:03Et c'est le Polestar 2.
01:07Et c'est le Tesla Model 3 Performance.
01:27Un Tesla Model 3.
02:50All right, let's do this.
03:40All right, let's get the obvious out of the way.
03:42This one is a lot quicker.
03:46And if you wanted a drag race of these, I promise you, it would be very boring.
03:50You'd just watch the Tesla go...
03:54And silently.
03:55It's putting out about three seconds flat to 60 miles an hour these days,
03:59with the last update.
04:01And it even has more range than the Polestar 2.
04:04So already, it puts the Polestar 2 in big trouble.
04:10And here, Tesla fans would be saying,
04:12« Yeah, and even the lower trims are quicker with more range. »
04:16And that's true.
04:18They're cheaper.
04:24Unfortunately, James has me beat there.
04:26Because right now, we have 140 kilometers of range left.
04:32And honestly, we've only really driven this car around this morning,
04:36on the back roads a little bit, and a short commute in the city.
04:39I'm worried. James has to drop this car off.
04:42I don't know if he's going to make it back.
04:44But do I care?
04:50Visibility is a bit of a thing here.
04:52The rear visibility is not perfect.
04:54I kind of have this little dome that I look out of.
04:57But the frontward visibility is great.
04:59And I'm at kind of like a crossover driving height.
05:03Which, if you're into that sort of thing, is nice.
05:05The Tesla Model 3 is a little bit lower than this.
05:08And, unlike the Tesla, I get to look at a gauge cluster,
05:11which is right in front of me, with my speed and other relevant information,
05:14instead of having to look at an iPad glued to the dashboard.
05:18Yeah, I've got an iPad to my right and nothing in front of me,
05:22and no heads-up display.
05:24And right now, depending on where you live,
05:27you kind of see a Tesla everywhere you look.
05:30So the originality card is already being taken from its grasp.
05:35But it's still really fast and has great, sharp steering.
05:41I'm sure in the Tesla right now, James is going,
05:43ooh, ah, at how fast the Model 3 performance is.
05:47And he's not wrong. It is very quick and fast.
05:50This car is also quick and fast, but not as quick.
05:57The thing is, though, since it's electric,
06:00obviously there's an immediate shove at any speed.
06:05And it's more than you need. 4.5 seconds, 0 to 60.
06:09That's not slow at all.
06:13We just drove the Taycan Turbo S recently,
06:16and that car was sickeningly fast.
06:19This car, even though it's very quick,
06:22I find it very well calibrated.
06:24You can stomp on the throttle, and it doesn't hurt.
06:28It just gets you to speed really effectively.
06:32And it has one-pedal driving.
06:34If you have creep on, one-pedal driving won't work.
06:36But I turn creep off, and then I put it in standard.
06:39And when I come off the throttle, it does most of the braking for me.
06:43But if you turn the whole thing off, one-pedal drive off,
06:47the brake pedal becomes very stiff and wooden.
06:51I like it, actually. It feels very race car.
06:54After all, this does have the performance pack.
06:57The performance pack is really important,
06:59because it gets you some really good stuff for about $6,000 Canadian.
07:02You get these diamond-cut wheels.
07:04You get Brembo brakes, which are painted gold.
07:06Dust cap covers, which are painted gold.
07:08Upgraded Continental tires and a black roof.
07:11And gold seatbelts.
07:13But most importantly of all, you get Ohlins dampers.
07:20And those Ohlins dampers are a big deal.
07:23They're really worth the money.
07:26You have to understand, not all dampers are created equal.
07:28And they make all the difference in the world.
07:30Because this car, well, on the platform of an XC40,
07:34is not fundamentally designed to be an EV.
07:36It's kind of adapted.
07:38And the whole body is steel. It's not carbon fibre like the Polestar 1.
07:41So, it's really heavy.
07:44Really heavy.
07:454,700 pounds.
07:49I couldn't have told you that, though, by driving into the corners.
07:51Because with properly set-up dampers,
07:53which are adjustable, these ones, by the way,
07:55I can just toss this thing into a corner.
07:57And it feels like it has a low centre of gravity.
08:00It controls its mass perfectly.
08:03I love the way this goes over undulations and bumps.
08:06And it doesn't translate to any weirdness in how the front end reacts with the steering.
08:10Steering, by the way, not that good.
08:12On centre feel, otherwise, very numb.
08:14Although, stiff bumps, potholes and stuff,
08:17does create a little bit of a harsh impact.
08:19But they are adjustable, so you can back the dampers off a little bit
08:21if you want a softer ride.
08:23It is a bit of a strange thing to do dampers that are adjustable on the damper.
08:26By that, I mean you physically have to get out,
08:28crawl under the car and go click, click, click, click, click.
08:31But I like Ohlins, so I'm not going to complain.
08:38Knowing Thomas, he's talking about how much he wants to marry Ohlins dampers
08:41and have babies with them.
08:43And how well it's managing its 4,700 pound weight.
08:48But the Tesla is under no such pressure
08:50because this weighs 700 pounds less.
08:56And as performance as that Polestar 2 claims to be,
08:59this one comes with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Ss.
09:03That is objectively a better tyre than those Continentals.
09:07So I can still take corners like this
09:10with outrageous confidence.
09:13The centre of gravity is low.
09:15The seating position is low. I feel like I'm closer to the ground.
09:18This is more sports car.
09:20And as I accelerate, I'm greeted with the rush of wind,
09:23which you hear on the highway as well.
09:25And I want to say that the Polestar 2 experiences as much wind noise,
09:29if not more, than the Model 3.
09:31And that surprised me.
09:36Before James and I meet up to talk about the styling,
09:38we're going to switch cars and just do a little quick refresher drive.
09:42Because I really, really like this Polestar 2.
09:46As an EV, I think it accomplishes everything that you'd want.
09:50And then some.
09:51It's actually fun to drive.
09:53I'm really enjoying myself.
09:57We each had a quick drive in each other's cars
09:59to refresh our memories of how they're the same
10:01and how they're different.
10:08Very impressive. Very impressive.
10:10It is very impressive. This is also impressive.
10:12But I remembered that it is undersprung and underdamped.
10:15It's just a little bit too soft in the corners.
10:18And that's when we ruined the outside tire at the track last year
10:21when we were testing it.
10:22That wasn't the track, though. That's spirited driving.
10:24It's a performance car. It's the Model 3 Performance.
10:27And this is Polestar 2, the Performance brand.
10:30It's Performance oriented.
10:31But I think where this is better with the damping,
10:33that has tighter steering.
10:35So the confidence, for me, balances out.
10:37Interesting. Yeah, the steering is very good in this,
10:39and it's not quite as good.
10:40But I just like the way that this is controlled.
10:42I think it's so rock solid.
10:44What's the thing that we hate most about crossovers?
10:46Well, yeah, I guess people have said that this is crossover-like, right?
10:49It's more towards a Model Y.
10:51Although having them next to each other, they're very similar.
10:53They are very similar in height.
10:54Yeah, crossovers tend to pitch.
10:55They tend to roll.
10:56They don't give you that confidence.
10:58Even the RAV4, the first one, failed the Moose test.
11:00It did fail the Moose test, yeah.
11:02This doesn't have any of those problems.
11:04And you get to be high up when you drive.
11:06You do.
11:07Like turning left at a light, merging on the highway.
11:09It's just boom, boom, boom, rock solid.
11:11I really, really like it, and that's because of the Ohlins.
11:13It's so important.
11:14So are you saying that if you put Ohlins on that,
11:16it would be better because of the speed?
11:18Better than this?
11:19Yeah.
11:20Yes.
11:21There you go.
11:22It makes a huge difference.
11:23And again, it's not a track car.
11:25It's the Model 3 Performance.
11:27It is a track car.
11:28Listen, if Elon keeps tweeting about lap times of his latest performance cars,
11:33I'm going to judge it as a performance car.
11:36OK, all right.
11:37What about judging them based on aesthetics?
11:39Great segue, James.
11:41I think the front end of this is beautiful,
11:43and the front end of this looks like a turtle.
11:47So yes, I agree the front end of this is very nice.
11:49It is.
11:50However, step around here, and suddenly you're looking at a Scion TC in many ways.
11:55It does look like a Scion TC.
11:57Like literally from the mirror back, it looks like a Scion TC.
11:59And this is a fastback, and I think the Audi e-tron did the fastback, the sportback, better.
12:06I love the front end of this with the Thor's hammer headlights.
12:09Speaking of the mirrors, these are really cool because they're frameless,
12:13same as the Polestar 1, and these are actually patented by Polestar.
12:17They are, yes.
12:18The same company, well, Volvo, that released the patent for the three-point seatbelt to make everyone safe.
12:24They make a cool wing mirror, and they're just like, mine.
12:27My wing mirror, you can't have it.
12:28And there's actually something very cool about this,
12:30and I can see the confused look in your eye because you're wondering,
12:32how does the glass within the casing move if you want to adjust it?
12:36Oh, yeah.
12:37It doesn't. The whole mirror moves.
12:39I didn't notice that before, actually. That sounds like something that would break.
12:42Yeah, it's actually very cool.
12:43This isn't as important as the storage, though.
12:45No. Let's have a look at the frunks.
12:47And the trunks.
12:48But the frunks first.
12:56They did not like that.
12:57This is taking up a lot of energy to open the trunk. That's a very loud fan.
13:00That is very loud.
13:02Yeah, that's a huge difference.
13:04Massive difference.
13:05Wait, this is so loud.
13:07Why is it making such a big deal out of opening the frunk?
13:09Oh, because it's angry because it didn't want us to point out how small the frunk is.
13:14Wait, does this open even more?
13:16Oh, there's your tire-filling stuff.
13:19I will say that you could fit...
13:21We'll just come over here because it's quieter.
13:23There we go.
13:24As I go to reach to close it, it stops complaining.
13:27It stops complaining, yeah.
13:29I will say that this could hold a full-size carry-on luggage.
13:31That couldn't.
13:32No, you're probably right.
13:33Let's look at the trunks, though.
13:34Okay, come on, Polestar. Do me proud.
13:40Hey, nice.
13:44Okay, okay.
13:45So, this is much wider and deeper.
13:49It looks deeper, however...
13:50But look how big the opening is on this.
13:52Yeah, the hatch on this really gives it value.
13:54And you can fold the seats in that, but if you fold the seats in this,
13:57you get a huge cavernous opening.
13:59It is narrower, though, I will say that.
14:00There you go.
14:01And this has some cool stuff.
14:02Check this out.
14:03I got this little bit for the shop.
14:04Those are for, like, grocery hooks, right?
14:06It's good stuff.
14:07And, like the Tesla, this has one of those, too.
14:10I got this massive cavernous opening with a little thing that holds it up.
14:17Yeah, it's got a lot going on.
14:18Yeah.
14:19And you've already forgotten how small the frunk is as a result.
14:22Oh, yeah.
14:23Made up for it, I guess.
14:24All right, let's go talk about the interior using normal door handles to get in.
14:29Yes, normal is nice.
14:31Yes, normal is nice.
14:33And I think that's why this represents such an interesting prospect,
14:36because it doesn't feel like a crazy departure from normal cars.
14:39Like, Tesla went that extra 2,000 miles rather than the extra mile.
14:44Yeah, exactly.
14:45And it feels a bit foreign in there and strange.
14:46I think my favorite part about this is this center touchscreen thing here, right?
14:51Because it is really easy to use.
14:54Like, I click on the car, and it gives me everything.
14:57Sport mode, steering feel firm, one-pedal driving, low, standard, off, and creep, on or off.
15:02It's just the most simple representation of all of this stuff.
15:06No, and this gave me the excuse to try and get used to one-pedal driving.
15:10I've never really given it the time.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Because it feels so strange.
15:13It is. I'm still quite weird about it.
15:15Like, I don't really know what I think.
15:16You just have to be smoother.
15:18Yeah.
15:24It's breaking.
15:29It's calibrated very well, this car.
15:31It's quite smooth to drive.
15:38I like the way the brakes feel at that point, because they're, like, stiff and wooden and race-car-y.
15:42I don't know. It's cool.
15:48Yeah.
15:53Yeah, this is a dumb idea.
15:54Like, it's the dumbest of all the ideas.
15:56Why would you put, like, you've got greasy fingers, you're eating, like, a croissant or something on your way to work?
16:02I don't know why I chose that.
16:03Where do you work?
16:04I'm pretty sure it's here.
16:05I live in France.
16:06I didn't see you at the croissants.
16:07At the croissants.
16:08And then this is just gross in no time.
16:10But the gauge cluster.
16:12I say the gauge cluster.
16:13It has a gauge cluster.
16:15Yeah, exactly.
16:17It's right in front of you.
16:18I like the Tesla's interior.
16:20I love how minimalist it is.
16:21We'll talk about it more in a second, but this, to me, is perfect.
16:25The only thing that scares me about this is how quickly I've been watching the battery drop as I drive.
16:29Yeah, it was full at the beginning of the day.
16:31Yeah, it's pretty aggressive.
16:33That said, one of the cool things that allows you to plan, as far as, like, range anxiety is concerned.
16:39So, this is all Google, right?
16:41It's all a Google tablet.
16:42We're not going to say the words because then everyone's Google systems in the house.
16:46Google and, hey, reverse the order.
16:48Yeah.
16:49You say that phrase.
16:50So, if you say subgooglele, if you put your destination in, it shows you how much battery you're going to have when you get there.
16:55When you arrive.
16:56Yeah.
16:57Yes.
16:58It's also really simple and intuitive to use.
17:00I like Google Maps, personally, a lot more than most other map things.
17:05Yeah, so it defaults to Google Maps.
17:07It has Spotify.
17:08It's right there.
17:09It's very, very easy.
17:10It's really nice.
17:11We need to talk about this.
17:12So, this is where it falls down, maybe.
17:15Like, things that we suggested were rugged and cool in, like, a RAV4 at the 40 grand level, it starts to not get away with when you get to the 77 grand.
17:24Here's the problem is that this material is kind of cool, and I'm sure it's, like, eco-friendly.
17:28It's all vegan.
17:29It's all eco-friendly.
17:30Right.
17:31But the problem is that it's already, like, any amount of powdery dust will get stuck in the fibers, and it looks dirty.
17:36And it doesn't feel that expensive.
17:37It doesn't feel that expensive.
17:39When you say that number out loud like that, it just really hurts.
17:47You get leather.
17:48I do like the massive sunroof, though.
17:50Headroom is great.
17:51Like, really great.
17:52Lots and lots of headroom.
17:53Yeah, the panoramic sunroof, as standard, is a massive thing.
17:57This is honestly a really nice cabin, but it does have its flaws.
18:01Actually, interestingly, one of those flaws is not the back seat.
18:04No.
18:05Go look.
18:07Sit behind yourself.
18:08Send me to the back.
18:09I've sent you to the back.
18:11This is your driving position.
18:12My driving position?
18:13Yep.
18:14Oh, yeah, that's good.
18:15Right?
18:16You've got headroom.
18:17Plenty of knee room.
18:18And because of this…
18:19I have one inch of headroom.
18:20That's a decent amount.
18:21So if you're 5'11", you'd be snug.
18:22Yeah.
18:23I thought you were 6'.
18:26Yeah.
18:27Yeah.
18:28But, yeah, no, the panoramic roof makes it feel like there is no roof.
18:30Right.
18:31And from here, I can see Polestar's signature logo reflecting.
18:34The little reflecty logo thing.
18:35I say it's a signature because it's the second time we've been in a Polestar,
18:37and now they've done it twice.
18:38Well, there is only two of them.
18:39So there you go.
18:40And they've labeled them one and two.
18:43Oh, no, this is wrong.
18:44Someone forgot to install the interior in my car.
18:46Oh, wow.
18:48Boom!
18:49No, actually, I know it's a departure from the norm, but I do like how minimalist this is.
18:53Yes, but after being in that, this is really minimalist because that just feels like a normal EV car.
19:01But this also has a very easy-to-get-on-with screen.
19:03No, the screen is fine.
19:04You see, that's it.
19:05That's all there is to talk about, though.
19:07Everything is in the screen.
19:08Everything is in the screen.
19:09No looking to the right.
19:10Yeah, no, I have no problem with the screen.
19:11It's very quick to respond.
19:12I've never disliked this.
19:13It's easy to read.
19:14It's easy to use.
19:15Also an egregious amount of piano black, but you can wrap it day one.
19:18We've seen some really…
19:19Everybody wraps it.
19:20Everybody wraps it.
19:21I don't think I've…
19:22This is one of the only Model 3 Performance I think I've ever seen that has it.
19:24Tesla, can you listen to the audience?
19:26They obviously don't want piano black.
19:28It's so simple.
19:29Actually, turns out, since we filmed this, Tesla did listen, and they've changed the center console.
19:34I do like the white up here, though.
19:35I prefer the wood, personally, on the interior.
19:38And this doesn't have a continuous panoramic roof, right?
19:41It doesn't make it all the way.
19:42No.
19:43The Model Y does.
19:44But on the way back there, that feels really future.
19:46I like that.
19:47It's all the way.
19:48It goes really far back.
19:49I like this interior.
19:50And this leather, while vegan, I still think it's vegan, right?
19:54Probably.
19:55It feels more on market than the fabric in that.
19:57Oh, definitely.
19:58Without question.
19:59Actually, all the materials in this car feel more upmarket.
20:02I like the steering wheel, too.
20:03You've never liked the steering wheel on this?
20:05I think it's fine.
20:06It's nice and chunky.
20:07It's a good size.
20:08It's quite small.
20:09It's fine, yeah.
20:10I like it.
20:11But we have to remind ourselves, this interior is available in the more affordable Teslas as well.
20:16Yes.
20:17And then the Polestar is also going to have a more affordable option.
20:20So I know I critiqued it for having a $77,000 interior, but that interior will still be available.
20:24It's probably still the same, yeah.
20:25They're not going to make the fabric any worse.
20:27So that wasn't fair.
20:28I apologize.
20:29This is my YouTube apology video.
20:31This is your YouTube apology video?
20:33Yes.
20:34Similar amounts of storage.
20:35These are comfortable.
20:36These are comfortable on both of these, actually.
20:38Nothing offensive about the seats.
20:40We'll say that the Polestar 1 gets the crazy awesome Volvo seats.
20:44This doesn't.
20:45For $120,000 more.
20:47More.
20:48And a 2-liter 4-cylinder.
20:49And a 2-liter 4-cylinder.
20:50Yeah.
20:51I love the car, though.
20:52Go sit in the back seat.
20:53I'm sending you.
20:54Go.
20:55To test.
20:57Just as good.
20:58Very similar.
20:59Just as good.
21:00Nothing wrong with that.
21:01Very similar.
21:02In fact, maybe...
21:03No, similar.
21:04Yeah.
21:05The same.
21:06No.
21:07When it comes to livability, both of these cars are very...
21:10They're different flavors.
21:11Well, you raise an interesting point, and...
21:13He's coming back to the front.
21:19Oh, there you are.
21:20Because...
21:21Because...
21:22Even though they aren't as livable on the inside,
21:24this still has the advantage of the supercharger network.
21:26A massive advantage.
21:27It's got more range.
21:28Yes.
21:29It's quicker, which isn't that important.
21:31But yeah.
21:32Yeah.
21:33So these two represent different but good buying options.
21:40And that's really the core of it.
21:42We are more than happy to have two fun-to-drive performance EVs to choose from.
21:47I think the Polestar 2 is an excellent choice.
21:50I just can't help thinking that a regular long-range Model 3,
21:54with its cheaper price, longer range, bigger frunk,
21:58and access to all the same charging stations as the Polestar,
22:01in addition to the entire Tesla supercharger network,
22:05would be my choice.
22:07At the end of the day, I personally found myself strongly leaning towards the Polestar 2.
22:12I liked how fun it was to drive with the performance pack.
22:15I thought the chassis was better controlled,
22:17and I really liked the interior design.
22:19So even though the Model 3 is still a brilliant option,
22:22right now, today, this new Polestar is my pick.
