00:00Hi, I'm digital reporter Amy Seddon. One of Lancashire's most famous faces, actress Julie
00:07Hesmond-Hull, has teamed up with fellow film and TV stars to fund a major new modern slavery
00:12campaign. Julie is joined by celebrities including Andy Oliver and Kerry Godleman to support
00:19Causeway's new campaign, Stander of Survivors. Watch the video featuring all the stars next.
00:27It is estimated that over 100,000 people in the UK are trapped in modern day slavery
00:33and exploitation. Globally, estimates put this figure as over 50 million. If somebody
00:39finds themselves in a position of vulnerability or crisis, they can be particularly at risk.
00:45Modern slavery takes many different forms. Labour exploitation, sexual exploitation and
00:52criminal exploitation are some of the most common. But it's important we know that modern
00:57slavery is out there and there are people experiencing it right now. Modern slavery
01:03does not always mean someone is being physically deprived of their freedom, although this does
01:08happen. It's more likely to involve emotional coercion through fear and manipulation. Threats
01:15of violence or abuse against them or their families can be used to control somebody.
01:19Whilst it may look like somebody is able to move around freely, in reality they may be
01:24being controlled by others. Often traffickers and exploiters go to great lengths to hide
01:29what is happening. It can be hidden in plain sight and is happening in towns and cities
01:35across the UK. Signs of modern slavery can be nuanced and hard to spot. Are they in physical
01:41distress or showing physical injuries or displaying poor physical appearance? Do they appear to
01:48be controlled by others? Isolated from their connections or lacking ID or possessions?
01:55Have they been deprived of basic necessities or afraid to speak? Maybe they're experiencing
02:03communication difficulties. Are they living in poor conditions, working excessive hours
02:10or appearing to be made to work unwillingly? If you think someone may be experiencing modern
02:15slavery, please visit Causeway's website or call the UK Modern Slavery Helpline. Causeway
02:22is one of the largest providers of modern slavery support in the UK. They exist to support,
02:28empower and create change for survivors. Causeway help modern slavery survivors recover from
02:35trauma and develop safe and fulfilling futures. As they believe, everybody should be free
02:41to live. Due to the nature of exploitation and misunderstandings around the issue, modern
02:46slavery can be one of the most isolating crimes in our communities. Today, we are asking you
02:52to stand with survivors. Stand with the survivors. Stand with survivors. Causeway can't do their
03:00work alone. They rely on the support, care and generosity of people like you. So please
03:08visit Causeway's website and find them on social media. And please stand with survivors.
