00:00Which phone has the best camera?
00:02Pixel 7 Pro or the iPhone 14 Pro?
00:05I'm actually using a Pro Max here,
00:06but they have the same camera.
00:07Throughout this video, I want you to tell me
00:09which you think comes out on top in the comments.
00:11I'm actually shooting this right now on both
00:13with the new cinematic modes.
00:15Well, it's not you on the iPhone,
00:16but we're gonna go through photos, videos,
00:18night mode, selfies, all that good stuff,
00:20and let me know which you think comes out on top.
00:22Okay, here they are.
00:23Two of the very best camera phones you can buy.
00:25Both have triple lens cameras
00:27with an ultra wide domain and a telephoto.
00:29In terms of design, I think maybe the Pixel
00:31stands out a little bit more for me
00:32with this new metal visor,
00:34this Geordie LaForge visor around the cameras,
00:36whereas we've had this design on the iPhone
00:37for quite a few years now, but who cares really?
00:40Let's jump into the camera app.
00:41This is why we're here.
00:42This is the important stuff.
00:43And so let me share a few things I like
00:45and dislike about each phone.
00:47If we jump through the different lenses,
00:49we've got the ultra wide, both on a 0.5 times,
00:52which is now wider on the Pixel than before.
00:54We've got the one times.
00:55Then we've got the two times,
00:57both of which use a 12 megapixel crop
00:59of the main camera sensor.
01:01Then we have the telephoto zoom,
01:03which is a three times, still a three times on the iPhone,
01:06but now a slightly longer five times on the Pixel.
01:08That's up from four times before.
01:10Zooming into 10 times,
01:11you can see quite a big difference in the image quality.
01:14Just look at the noise on the iPhone 14 shot.
01:17The iPhone actually tops out at 15 times
01:19versus 30 times on the Pixel,
01:21but I cropped in on the iPhone to match it here.
01:23And you can see at long zooms,
01:25the Pixel is the clear winner.
01:27One thing I have noticed is that
01:30in the photo mode of the camera app,
01:32it does appear to switch lenses
01:34a little bit smoother on the iPhone.
01:36Not that much different,
01:38but you can see it's a bit smoother on the iPhone.
01:39Very nice.
01:40Doesn't really matter outside of video recording though.
01:43And actually, if we zoom in,
01:44we can see that the Pixel is a little bit smoother
01:47on the iPhone than on the Pixel.
01:48So that's a big difference.
01:50And then we have the ultra wide,
01:51which is a three times,
01:52which is a three times on the Pixel.
01:54On video recording though,
01:55and actually, if we do jump over to video,
01:58both in 4K.
01:59So one times,
02:010.5 times,
02:04one times,
02:05two times,
02:06three and five times respectively,
02:08back to ultra wide,
02:10back to zoom.
02:12The iPhone is still smoother.
02:13Also you notice with the one times main lens,
02:15we do have a wider field of view.
02:17There's a little bit more in the frame on the iPhone.
02:21But look at this,
02:22maybe the real selling point of the Pixel.
02:25You can pause the recording.
02:26Why can't we do that on the iPhone?
02:28It doesn't make any sense.
02:29Now in terms of photos,
02:30obviously we have RAW up here.
02:32You can shoot in ProRAW.
02:33You can also shoot in ProRes.
02:35That's exclusive to the Pro models.
02:37It does use a lot more storage
02:39and you are limited to 4K 30 for now.
02:41But if you want the super highest quality,
02:43big files that you can work and edit with later
02:46for both your photos and your videos,
02:48ProRAW, ProRes, very nice to have.
02:50Cinematic mode I think is the best on any phone.
02:53I know Samsung's had it forever with portrait video
02:55and now we have cinematic lens blur video with the Pixel,
02:59but I really do think the quality is the best on the iPhone,
03:01especially now we can shoot in 4K.
03:03I've actually shot a couple of videos
03:05entirely on cinematic mode
03:06and I'll link above if you want to check those out.
03:08What I would recommend doing though
03:09is changing the aperture to maybe F3.5 or F4
03:13because the default 2A is a little bit shallow.
03:15You can sometimes look like a cardboard cutout.
03:17So you can play around with that before or after you shoot,
03:20which I think is very cool.
03:22Switching back to regular video
03:23and one of the new features of the 14 series
03:25is this little guy up here, action mode,
03:28which basically gives you much more stable video.
03:30It does limit the resolution to 2.8K at 60 FPS.
03:34The Pixel does also have stabilized video modes,
03:36but realistically I don't use them that much.
03:38I prefer shooting at full 4K where possible.
03:40So let's see how the regular video mode
03:42compares in terms of stabilization.
03:44Hey Sarah, should we test out the stabilization?
03:48I don't think I have a choice.
03:49That's right, you don't.
03:50Let's go.
04:07Both phones do give you a macro option.
04:09Essentially the ultra wide lens doubles as the macro lens.
04:12And as you can see, you can get a lot closer with the iPhone.
04:14It's got a shorter focal length.
04:17But what about the Pixel?
04:18Does this have any new camera tricks?
04:20Well, yeah, actually it does.
04:21Switching over to motion,
04:23this was introduced last year with the 6 series.
04:25We have long exposure.
04:26This adds a bit of motion blur
04:27to the subjects in your scenes.
04:29I never found it worked that well,
04:31but you can play around with it.
04:32And also we have action pan,
04:34which focuses on a moving subject
04:35and then adds a blur to the background.
04:37So your subject looks in focus like a car,
04:40but the background's moving.
04:41So it looks like it's going fast.
04:45Moving over to Night Sight,
04:46and on the face of it, nothing's really changed here,
04:48but I can tell you right now,
04:50having tested this versus the 6 Pro,
04:52the processing of the Night Sight
04:54is significantly faster now.
04:56I'd say it's like two to three times quicker,
04:58which means you're less likely to get blurry photos
05:00if your subjects are moving while it's processing.
05:02So big upgrade to the processing speed of Night Sight.
05:05Then there's the new cinematic mode,
05:06very much like the iPhone,
05:08although this is limited to 1080p, unfortunately,
05:10whereas we get 4K on the iPhone.
05:12And then in modes,
05:13you've got panorama, photosphere,
05:15if you wanna make it like you're on top of the world,
05:17and Google Lens for scanning objects
05:19and seeing what they are.
05:21There you go, look at that.
05:22One of my favorite features though,
05:23and it doesn't get shown off enough these days,
05:25is astrophotography.
05:27This has been around for a few years,
05:28but with the improvements of the camera qualities
05:30over the years, I think it's got better as well.
05:32You do need a tripod or to lean it against something.
05:34It needs to be completely still.
05:36You can't do this handheld.
05:37And then it will do a long exposure.
05:39Well, actually multiple long exposures,
05:41adding up to about four minutes.
05:42And then you'll get a very cool picture at the end of it,
05:44as well as a couple of second time-lapse,
05:47which shows these two shooting stars as I was recording,
05:50which is pretty incredible, actually.
05:52You can zoom in on that.
05:53But what I would suggest doing is going into edit,
05:55clicking on astro,
05:56shows a bit more of the detail in the sky,
05:58although personality thrown into the light room
05:59and play around with the dehaze and the contrast a bit more,
06:02but that's a nice single press to fix the image.
06:07But wait, let me show you the best bit.
06:09This is a photo of me when I was about four years old.
06:13My nephew actually still has this jumper.
06:15Very old photo.
06:16I actually scanned this in with my printer.
06:18Jumping into edit, check this out.
06:20The new unblur feature.
06:22This is exclusive for now, at least,
06:24to the new seven series pixels.
06:26This is with the unblur, original.

06:31Isn't that amazing?
06:33So any photo you have on your phone
06:35doesn't have to have been taken on a pixel.
06:37You can potentially unblur.
06:39Here's a very nice picture of me from my wedding after.
06:43A little bit more subtle that time,
06:44but definitely you can see it's adding more detail,
06:47more information.
06:47And then finally, while this isn't new to the seven series,
06:50it is still a pixel exclusive,
06:52unless you want to jump into Photoshop, that is,
06:53but we have magic eraser.
06:55So you can see here, suggesting which people to remove.
06:59Let's give that a go.
07:00It's not perfect and sometimes the shadows are left behind.
07:03So in terms of pure camera features,
07:05I'm having a bit more fun with the pixel, I have to say,
07:09but let's talk about image quality,
07:10which takes a better picture.
07:12And the answer is, well, it's up to you, really.
07:14It's all very subjective.
07:15I am not a professional photographer.
07:17I will admit that now.
07:18Between these two, you can see quite a big difference
07:20in the color temperature.
07:22The iPhone has a wider field of view.
07:24And also if you look at the background,
07:25the pixels done a much better job
07:26handling the dynamic range
07:28between the bright foreground and the dark background.
07:31But then in other shots,
07:32there's really very little between them.
07:34One pattern I have been seeing though with the iPhone
07:36since I've been using it
07:37is that there's a tendency to over-sharpen images,
07:40which seems to be new for the 14 series.
07:42I hadn't seen it as much on the 13s and I don't love it.
07:45And looking at the lady in red
07:46and the cloth around the table,
07:48it looks a tad over-sharpened on the iPhone.
07:50But this photo of a bouquet of flowers my wife made,
07:53she's actually a wedding florist
07:55and her company's called The Way to Bloom on Instagram,
07:57if anyone's looking for a wedding florist in the UK.
07:59But what I love about this
08:01is it completely contradicts that first picture
08:03where the iPhone was warmer.
08:05So this is where you have to be careful
08:06when you're comparing shots.
08:08But I would say the Pixel both times
08:09actually is giving us a more natural,
08:11more realistic white balance and color
08:13because this was the evening sun, it's golden hour.
08:15I would say the iPhone also leans
08:17towards being a bit more saturated than the Pixel.
08:19My red Tesla here, you can see is a lot more vivid,
08:22which you might prefer,
08:23especially if you're posting it straight to Instagram.
08:25I want it to be as vibrant as possible,
08:27but I think the Pixel is just a bit more realistic.
08:30Now switching over to portrait mode
08:32and I had to show you this screenshot
08:33because just look at the difference in the field of view.
08:35This is with the one times lens for both
08:38and there is so much more in the frame on the iPhone.
08:41And so holding the phones side by side
08:43and taking a portrait with the regular main one times lens,
08:46just look at the difference.
08:47Now on the one hand, you can get more in on the iPhone shot,
08:50but then I quite like the focal length actually
08:53of the one time zoom on the Pixel 7.
08:55Again, just look at the difference.
08:57Although I must admit my favorite focal length
08:59is the iPhone's three times lens,
09:01which of course is an optical zoom,
09:03whereas you have to go to five times
09:04for the optical zoom on the Pixel,
09:06which I find actually a little bit too close.
09:22Now in really tricky lighting like this shot,
09:24I think the iPhone is doing better
09:26if you look at the detail on my arm and the controller.
09:29And in fact, if we zoom into two times,
09:31look at all that noise on the Pixel.
09:33It's kind of horrible actually.
09:35The iPhone's done a much better job here.
09:37Now I must admit this does look a bit creepy,
09:38but it's gonna be a good test of all the different lenses.
09:41And as I go through the ultra wide, the main,
09:43zoom into two times and then up to their telephotos,
09:46the five and three times respectively,
09:47what I'm seeing is when the Pixel hits
09:49that five times telephoto,
09:51when it can kick in that zoom lens,
09:53it's much better than the iPhone.
09:54But at two, three and four times,
09:56particularly in low light,
09:57the iPhone seems to do a better job.
10:03Okay, switching around to the front cameras.
10:09And this is a really tricky shot
10:10because we are both fully backlit by the sun.
10:12As is the pattern we're seeing,
10:13the iPhone has a wider field of view,
10:15although they can both punch out as well,
10:17which I'll come to in a second.
10:18What's interesting is that in a kind of role reversal
10:21from the rear cameras,
10:22where the iPhone was always brighter and over sharpened,
10:25now that seems to be the case for the Pixel.
10:27What I do appreciate though,
10:33is that both phones let you pull out a little bit.
10:35You've got two levels of zoom options
10:37with the selfie cameras.
10:47But what about video?
10:48Well, this has been shot at 4K 30 on both.
10:51I'm also using the internal mics on both.
10:53So as I switch between them,
10:55tell me which you think sounds better.
10:57I'm very backlit right now.
10:58So let's see how the lighting is and the quality.
11:00And if we go around this way, change the lighting,
11:04let's see how that deals with that super bright sunlight.
11:08And then a bit of a focus test.
11:09If I leave the frame, jump back in,
11:13leave the frame, jump back in.
11:15My neighbors probably think I'm a complete idiot right now.
11:18What do you think?
11:19But what about in tricky lighting?
11:21This is shot with the rear cameras in 4K
11:24and straight away you can see some difference
11:25in the colors of the fire.
11:27Let's pull out to the 1.5
11:29and then punch into the two times,
11:31back to the one regular.
11:32And they both do a pretty good job.
11:34Now let's move into my studio.
11:36This is a little behind the scenes tour if you like.
11:38And what I'm seeing is the Pixel is noisier.
11:40And especially when we pull out to the ultra wide.
11:43In this lower lighting conditions,
11:44the iPhone is doing much better with video.
11:47With the regular lens, it's a lot closer.
11:49I would also say the iPhone did a better job
11:51with stabilization.
11:52It's a little bit smoother.
11:53Again, Pixel's doing okay.
11:55But overall for low light video,
11:57I think I have to give the win to the iPhone.
12:00But the Pixel's not far behind.
