00:00Hey guys, I'm Tom from TechJab, and I've got 10 of the latest and greatest flagship
00:04phones with me here, and I want to find out which one has the best battery.
00:09So I'm going to try and make this as realistic as possible, but within the confines of my
00:13studio.
00:14So everything is set to 150 nits, we have Wi-Fi on, also auto brightness turned off,
00:18which you actually have to find in the accessibility settings on the iPhone, and all the phones
00:22are set to their default settings.
00:23So some of them have higher QHD resolutions, but by default are at 1080p, left them there.
00:28So we have 5 different chips between the 10 phones, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1,
00:32also the 8 Plus Gen 1, also the Apple A15, A16, and the Google Tensor Core 2 chip in
00:37the Pixel.
00:38And you can see from these results, they're all fairly similar, although the iPhone takes
00:41the win, and the Pixel is in last place.
00:44Now obviously there's loads more phones I'd love to have included, but I actually don't
00:47have like the Sony Xperia Mark IV for one example, but I think 10 is still a pretty
00:51good amount for one battery test.
00:53And it is really important to say that your mileage may vary, it all depends on how you
00:57use your phone.
00:58Screen on time, for example, isn't like the most useful metric, because it all depends
01:01what you're watching or playing.
01:03But at the one hour mark, the OnePlus, somehow, is still on 100%.
01:07Surprisingly the ROG phone, which actually has the biggest battery, is down to 95, that's
01:11got a 6000 mAh battery, although of course we did run that benchmark, and then it jumps
01:15into the X mode.
01:16I've left it on dynamic so it should adjust, but being more powerful it's going to use
01:19up more battery when you're gaming or running intensive tasks.
01:23Now obviously all these phones don't come out at the same time, and some of them are
01:25due a refresh soon.
01:26So for example, we've got the Vivo X80 Pro, and we should see the X90 series come out
01:30around December time, and then late January we'll probably have refreshed Samsung Galaxy
01:34S23s and the new Oppo Find X6 Pro.
01:37So you're never going to get a time when they're all sort of in the same launch window.
01:41But right now as I'm filming this in November, these are the latest phones.
01:44Actually that's not quite true, there is a slightly newer ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, which
01:48I don't have, but very similar specs.
01:51Also while the Xiaomi 12T Pro is technically their newest release, the 12S Ultra is actually
01:56their flagship.
01:57But sadly I don't have one with me to test.
02:00Two hours in and the OnePlus is still winning at 90% left.
02:04Everything else is in the 80s.
02:05And I think what I'm really keen to see is how well the Pixel performs.
02:08Because obviously with the 6 Pro before, and well most Pixels in the past, they never really
02:12kept up.
02:13So I'm curious if this is going to come last.
02:15So actually place your bets right now, maybe let me know in the comments below which you
02:18think is going to win.
02:19Is it going to be the one with the biggest battery, or is it going to be a surprise?
02:23What do you think?
02:24Speaking of the Galaxy, I actually do have the Snapdragon version here.
02:26Of course there is an Exynos one as well.
02:28Although this year the battery is pretty similar between them, but hopefully going forward
02:32with the S23 series they'll all be Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.
02:35So this can just be a lot easier.
02:36I'm also curious to see how much of a difference the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 has to battery
02:41life over the regular Snapdragon 8.
02:42I think it's going to be quite significant.
02:45Okay so four hours in and it's pretty close.
02:48We've got three phones on 66%.
02:50The Magic 4 Pro from Honor is currently in last place with 64, and in the lead it seems
02:55to be between the OnePlus 10T and also the Xiaomi 12T Pro.
02:59In terms of battery size, the iPhones have the smallest batteries, but consistently we
03:03know how well optimized they are, so I'm not expecting them to come last.
03:06In terms of the Android phones, the Honor has the smallest battery at 4600mAh versus
03:11the ROG phone at 6000mAh, so that is quite a big difference.
03:14So it would be fair enough if the Honor loses out to the ROG.
03:17So we're seven hours in now and it's way past my bedtime, plus I want to do a bit of
03:20a standby battery life test as well.
03:22So let's leave these overnight and see how much they drop.
03:32Interesting.
03:33So they've all lost between 2 and 7% overnight, and actually the iPhones have come out worse
03:37there, both dropping 7%.
03:40By the way, as you'll appreciate by the end of this video, these take a long time to make
03:43and are also extremely boring.
03:45If you do enjoy this video and find it useful, a like and subscribe would be very much appreciated.
03:49Now I know what you're thinking.
03:50Tom, this isn't fair.
03:51Delete the video off YouTube right now because the iPhone 14 Plus only has 60Hz and everything
03:55else is higher.
03:56And in fact, the ROG phone goes up to 165Hz.
03:59And that's fair, but there is an advantage actually to the LTPO, the dynamic refresh
04:03rates on some of the higher end phones compared to the iPhone, because they can even go lower
04:07than 60.
04:08They can go down to 1Hz in most cases actually.
04:10So I didn't want to just restrict them all to 60.
04:12I think that would be unfair.
04:13Also, that's not how you use these phones, and hopefully this will be the last time we
04:17have to include an iPhone that only has a 60Hz refresh rate.
04:20But hey, whichever phone you're using, you want to keep it safe, right?
04:23Which is why I've teamed up with the lovely guys over at RhinoShield and they sent me
04:26a couple of cases.
04:29So I've got the full iPhone 14 family here.
04:32Let's get these guys protected.
04:33I also love the fact that all the packaging is recyclable and they also don't use any
04:36harmful chemicals in the making of their cases.
04:40So this particular case supports MagSafe and also using RhinoShield's unique shock spread
04:44material and also their high quality product design gives us extreme impact protection.
04:51RhinoShield offer a whole range of different cases.
04:53There are some modular options with interchangeable components, so you can change the colour and
04:57style of the buttons, the rims, the back cover.
04:59You can have so much fun with the customisation.
05:02But don't forget the screen.
05:03This is just as important.
05:04So I've got one of their 3D impact screen protectors here, which is a combination of
05:08glass and plastic.
05:09It's a polymeric material, so it actually looks and feels like glass, but it's incredibly
05:13durable.
05:15So now we're fully protected, let's put it to the test.
05:183, 2, 1 and look at that, not a scratch.
05:24So if you want to keep your phone and devices safe, then head on over to RhinoShield and
05:27I've put a link in the description below.
05:29But during November and their Black Friday sales, you can get up to 60% off across their
05:34range and if you use my promo code, TheTechChap, you can get an extra 10% off.
05:39Not too shabby.
05:40So click the link below and get started with RhinoShield.
05:44And we have our first casualty.
05:46It is the Honor Magic 4 Pro at 8 hours 48, a good innings, but somewhere behind the rest
05:51of the pack.
05:52And actually it's a good hour and a half until the next phone, the Pixel 7 Pro, kicks the
05:56bucket at 10 hours 19 and actually pretty much within the same minute as the Galaxy
06:01S22 Ultra.
06:02I did not expect the Pixel 7 Pro and the S22 Ultra to have basically the same battery life.
06:07So that is a big win for the Pixel, I think, considering how far behind they were in the
06:11past.
06:12And we see the Oppo Find X5 Pro running out of battery.
06:14So pretty close to the S22.
06:16But considering what the rest of the pack are on, I think they're going to start dropping
06:19like flies pretty quickly now.
06:21And so just past the 10 and a half hour mark, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and that is a little
06:26bit disappointing.
06:27I thought that would do better.
06:28Obviously, we know it doesn't quite hit last year's 13 Pro Max's battery, but still very,
06:33very good.
06:38And then it's the Vivo, the X80 Pro, at 10 hours 55.
06:42But then just a few seconds later, the OnePlus 10T drops out.
06:46So that's basically a draw, although technically the OnePlus lasted a tiny bit longer.
06:51Very, very close.
06:52And then quickly followed by the Xiaomi 12T Pro, which puts it in third place.
06:56And then we have just two left.
06:58Is it going to be the iPhone 14 Plus or the ROG Phone 6?
07:01Oh, it's going to be close.
07:03But look at that.
07:04There we go.
07:05The OnePlus is out, leaving the ROG Phone 6 on 1% and making it the winner, which is
07:10pretty crazy and also perhaps not surprising given it has by far the biggest battery.
07:18So in last place, the Honor Magic 4 Pro, a little bit disappointing, but then it does
07:21have a smaller battery and it uses the slightly older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip.
07:25Then the Pixel, second to last, but I still think this should get the award for most improved
07:30battery life, especially coming from the Pixel 6 Pro last year.
07:33But then again, considering the Tensor chip is the slowest in terms of raw graphical performance,
07:38maybe it's not that impressive.
07:39I don't know.
07:40I still love the Pixel.
07:41I think it's done really well to keep up with the rest of the pack.
07:43Then we have the S22.
07:44New models are expected soon, likely with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.
07:49So hopefully that'll make a big difference because this is coming to the end of its life.
07:52Well, in terms of being a flagship latest smartphone.
07:55Then we have the Oppo Find X5 Pro, which I think is a bit of an underrated phone.
07:58I know not everyone loves the design of this, but it did pretty well in this test and also
08:02would do a refresh in the next couple of months.
08:04I had expected the iPhone 14 Pro Max to maybe be in the top two phones, maybe top three,
08:09but not quite.
08:10Still very, very impressive performance, but just not quite up to what the 14 Plus can
08:14do or even its older brother, the 13 Pro Max from last year.
08:17I'm genuinely amazed how well the Vivo did considering it has one of the smaller batteries,
08:224700 mAh, also not the newest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, which also makes a big difference.
08:27But then considering the OnePlus 10T also died within the same minute at 10 hours 55,
08:32it's pretty much a draw between the Vivo and the 10T.
08:34Not everyone loves the 10T and in many ways the 10 Pro is a better option, but we get
08:38the newer processor, the 8 Plus Gen 1, and I think that also goes a long way to make
08:42the battery better as well.
08:43And then in third place, the Xiaomi 12T Pro.
08:46This has done really, really well.
08:48The 8 Plus Gen 1 obviously helps, we've got a big 5000 mAh battery.
08:51And I'm also excited to see what they do with the new 13 series, which isn't that far away.
08:55This is like the mid-year refresh.
08:56But yeah, if you want a good battery life and you want a Xiaomi, then go for the 12T
09:00Pro.
09:02Coming second by just one percentage point, the iPhone 14 Plus.
09:05We expected this to do well, I mean, it's using last year's A15 chip, which is still
09:09very powerful, but slightly older.
09:11And also it's limited to the 60 hertz refresh rate, which may have given it an advantage
09:15or it actually may have been a disadvantage.
09:16I don't know because of the LTPO dynamic refresh of the other phones.
09:20Either way, as Apple claim this is the longest lasting iPhone, I think they're right.
09:25Which means the ROG Phone 6 with its whopping great 6000 mAh battery wins this battery test.
09:31Which is perhaps not massively surprising.
09:32So my takeaway is, they're all pretty great actually, you can't go wrong with any of them.
09:36I am excited to see what we get with the new Samsung, new Oppo and new Vivos very soon
09:40as well.
09:41And I am pleased to see the Pixel keeping up with the rest, even if it did come second
09:44to last.
09:45As always, there are loads more phones I'd love to have included and if you let me know
09:47in the comments below which one you'd like me to add for my next battery test in a few
09:51months because I need a break after making this video, do let me know in the comments
09:54below.
09:55Thanks for watching guys.
09:56I'll see you next time right here on The Tech Chat.
